My sister & brother-in-law had their wedding brunch reception catered by Food Hedz. Their first right move was a brunch menu which they were able to customize to their tastes and preferences. Result?! The best wedding meal I've ever had!! The quality and flavor of each dish was stellar!! Pricing was very reasonable considering the area. Denver would be more expensive and likely not as flexible. All around - two thumbs up!! My plate: Green beans and cherry tomatoes with an olive vinaigrette, fresh fruit salad, mini bagels with cream cheese, lox and capers (my all-time brunch fav), a beef and sweet potato hash, roasted potatoes, organic veggie quiche (my second fav dish...awesome flavor!). I didn't try the beef with the hash but heard awesome things about it. They also catered a cinnamon roll cake that was perfect for the couples taste. Located in a shopping plaza only labeled "Cafe"... This restaurant is one of our favorite places to eat in CO. Right of I-70, it's a quick place to stop for wine/beer, great food and outstanding service. My hubs had a salmon entree with udon and tempura veggies, and I had a shrimp, scallop, crab pasta in this AMAZING spicy marinara. I wanted to bathe in it. Top it with fruit beignets with brittle icecream and caramel, it was a meal to beat. I highly recommend if you're in Frisco or on your way on I-70. read more

Very difficult to find this place. Hint--it's in a strip mall, and the big sign says "Cafe". You really have to be staring straight at the front door to see it...but worth the search! Great food. This place is good. I mean, this place is, like, Gordon Ramsay good. They source everything they possibly can locally (Gordon nods in approval) and they make it all from scratch. The many awards on the wall stand as a testament to their culinary prowess. For the Reuben my partner got, we were told the chef corns his own beef (is that the right term? I've been pescatarian for five years and am not really familiar with the corning of meats) and uses his German grandmother's sauerkraut recipe. It was donned the best Reuben my partner said he had ever had. I had an open-face tuna melt that had a truly interesting, unique flavor. OH. And the icing on the cake--I asked the absolutely adorable server (who is wife of the chef) if she could make a peppermint mocha so that I didn't have to go to Starsucks to get my fix. She didn't have peppermint, but she did make me a mocha latte. A few moments later, she was able to scrounge up a mini candy cane, so I used it to stir the latte and I got my peppermint! Man. That's service. The place is entirely unassuming, located next to a Wells Fargo in a parking lot shared with a Walmart. The sign just says "Cafe" and if it weren't for its raving Yelp reviews, I never would have given it a glance. This place never fails and never disappoints. I went a few days ago and ordered a salmon dish with a rice paper veggie roll and some other amazing tasty treats like watermelon balls and a diced salad with mango and jalapeno. I feel like I'm a relatively experienced diner and food lover. I used to live in Chicago and traveled around the country and Europe and I find this food holds up to some of the best I have had. Anyone who says the food is bad maybe had a cold, had a bad day, have disabled taste buds, or are just plain grumpy complaining people. This place is really a hidden gem of Frisco. Normally, mountain food is boring, unimaginative, and blah - or too expensive to be really enjoyable. So how about a place located in a strip mall (right between a Walmart and Safeway) that delivers superior taste and service? My wife and I split two entrees - the special of the day - a red chile tempura fish taco with garden coleslaw and red chile sauce. The "tacos" came on flat fried tortillas, stacked up - tortilla, garden slaw, then lumps of tempura battered fish, then repeat. Red and black tortillas didn't save the taste of the tortilla, but the chili sauce, garden slaw and fish were exceptional. We also got a regular item - a pork loin sandwich, which was served on a brioche roll, with tempura fried onions and sweet potato and another slaw - this one spicy. I could have done with a dipping sauce for the fried veg, but other than that, a very tasty dish. Another bonus, they do french pressed coffee - which is a rarity these days, and to be enjoyed. It's much less bitter than regular drip coffee, but you have to wait a little for it - I won't drink coffee prepared any other way. Top that off with excellent service, and you have a major find. read more

After reading reviews, we were excited so to try this place. How sad that feeling wore off quickly...I ordered the ham and white bean soup--it was bland. My husband ordered a salad...I love oil and vinegar as a dressing, but whatever was in the dressing was super-acidic, he would not eat any of it after a bite or two. I ordered the duck, which also came out with a steak knife...for good reason--it was too tough to cut with a normal knife. It also tasted like turkey. I've had fabulous duck before, this really missed the mark. My husband ordered the pork chop--it was very dry!! :-( We were hoping the beignets would save the day--they did not. The berries in the minuscule 3 donuts were exceedingly tart. I'm from So Cal and have been to very fine restaurants so I'm not sure if I have higher expectations than other ppl who frequent here, but I would not recommend this restaurant and it was embarrassing that our friends visiting us also had to endure similar findings and pay through the nose for mediocre food. Had dinner from Foodhedz again last night - one of my favorite restaurants in Summit County. Chef David's specials (often some sort of fish or seafood) are amazing, and the menu changes seasonally. Everything is fresh and made to order - so if something needs to be tweaked (for example, because of a food allergy) - it is generally not a problem. And with a little advance notice, Chef David can sometimes accommodate special requests. Chef David's wife, Patti, holds down the front of the house - and is always pleasant and helpful - whether offering tastings of their soups, or recommending a wine pairing for dinner. Dinner entrees run ~$20-$30, and lunch runs around $10. Some folks say it's a little pricey... but this is not your average "strip mall" restaurant. Frankly, I usually spend a lot more when venturing out for meals in "major" cities - and the food is rarely as fresh or as tasty. And a lot of that goes back to using the best raw ingredients Chef David can get his hands on - and that can't be cheap... especially in the mountains. Foodhedz desserts are not to be missed - for winter 09/10, be sure to try the beignets of fresh berries with homemade toffee crunch ice cream! read more

I've eaten at Foodhedz before and have been very satisfied, however something seems to have changed. I went in yesterday for lunch with my Mother and two of my brothers for lunch. I had never tried the Paella until yesterday. I am sorry to report that it was flavorless. The rice had the taste of a boxed converted yellow rice such as an Uncle Ben's. The chicken had the stale flavor that comes from having been cooked well in advance and the seafood items while fresh and properly cooked, had been prepared separately from the chicken and the Andouille Sausage. Paella is a rice dish in which all of the ingredients are cooked together so all the flavors can meld and the herbs and spices serve to unify the dish. none of this was true yesterday and I would advise bypassing it all together. The good news is my mother and brothers were satisfied with their meals but all tasted mine and agreed it was not good. I'm giving Foodhedz 3 stars because everything else was good, the staff friendly and the atmosphere relaxing. read more

I have been enjoying Foodhedz for years and the dishes have always been fresh, varied and consistently delicious. Lunch is a bargain compared to their dinner prices, but you won't leave hungry. Each meal includes fresh baked bread and there are usually two homemade soups. Menus change with the seasons and are a superb example of 'farm-to-table' cuisine. Chef David and his team highlight on the quality of each ingredient. Don't be turned off by the strip-mall exterior nor the simple Café sign out front. The food and service speaks volumes about the passion of this husband and wife operation. I trusted the yelpers who reviewed this place and was really disappointed. 1) After spending loads at Sweet Basil, which was rated one of the best places to eat in America we wanted to not blow so much dough on a meal so we trusted the yelp's 2 $$ rating on Foodhedz cafe. Except the prices were pretty much comparable. And this restaurant is in a strip mall, with counter service, and really if it's going to have an ordering menu of that noodles and company, then I was expecting some damn good food. 2) The ambiance just fails. Even then I didn't care because I thought it had to be about the food. 3)Enter the lobster risotto. Our host raved about the dish and how simply delicious it was - and I reckon it would have been if I loved my food immersed floating in butter. We got the fresh florida mahi mahi with lobster risotto and broccoli. I'll admit the fish was indeed beautifully cooked. But the lobster risotto had cheese in it, and I mean it was mostly cheese than risotto. As for the lobster, it was pretty much rubbery. And I still can't stop talking about that damn risotto, because any cook knows that to get the creamy taste of risotto, you stir and stir it's a labour of love. And this wasn't. 4) The plating, seriously? this if child's play seriously. I realize this is a mom and pop joint, but where the hell do they get the balls to name such prices for such sub-par service, ambiance and food. I was forgiving on the ambiance, the service but the food - just. forget about it. You're better off eating McDee's. read more

I really hated my food here, and that's pretty much what it comes down to. The atmosphere was pleasant and the service was acceptable, if a bit understaffed. The waitress was friendly when she was able to come to our table. If my lunch hadn't been awful, I'd consider coming back. Unfortunately, it was. I had white bean and ham soup that was pretty much flavorless. After a few spoonfuls I added an unhealthy amount of salt and pepper so it would taste like something. I followed it up with a pasta that I thought sounded really interesting on the menu. It had garganelli mixed with gold beets, goat cheese, spinach, arugala, and toasted pecans. I love all those things, but somehow in this dish they came together into a gross mess. I managed to eat maybe 1/5 of it before I had to give up. They tried using goat cheese as the only sauce, but neither it nor the other ingredients were well mixed into the pasta. So most bites either tasted like dry blandness or overpowering goat cheese, which it turns out makes a pretty terrible pasta sauce. They basically took what would have been a nice beet dish or nice pasta dish and merged them into an inedible mess. I passed the dish around the table, but I received back minus a few minimal tastes. No one wanted it. I tried the schnitzel with "natural juices" but the sauce was just lemon on lemon. Foodhedz ended up being an expensive, unpleasant appetizer. I had to go to Wendy's afterwards to actually find something I wanted to eat. read more

I've eaten here a couple of times now, most recently yesterday. It was my first time for lunch and I was amazed at how fast the service was. Normally for dinner you have to go expecting a wait (or send your parents ahead of time and have them wait for you!) We put in our orders immediately and we probably waited 7 minutes total for our lunches to come out of the kitchen. I had the daily special, a tandoor chicken served over cherry-curry rice. The dish was a tad sweet for me, I was expecting a sour cherry, but it was well designed and worked well. My date had the chile relleno and it was spectacular. It was served with over posole with both green and red chilies. I definitely wished I had ordered it. The chef ran the Ranch at Keystone for a while before deciding to go it alone, now he and his wife run Foodhedz. Their menu is changing constantly, and the dishes are very local and very seasonal. I definitely recommend this place to anyone up in the mountains. We have never been disappointed here. Lunch ran $10 a plate, and dinner is around $20. Very nice wine selection and reasonable prices on the bottles. Definitely a good date place, although remember, you will wait for dinner. read more

Man, I miss Food Hedz. I moved out of the county recently, but when I come up to visit, I must always eat lunch here. I hear the chef is former resort chef that opened up this place - and it shows! His food is really lovely, with a seasonal, changing menu that is short and sweet. Guaranteed, everything you could order is going to be the best thing you ate in a long time. Last time I was there (fall 2011) I had the reuben sandwich, stacked super high with savory meat, on marbled rye, with a fried pickle on the side and sauerkraut. Yum-my. We haven't been to Foodhedz in a few years - and I can't imagine why! Everything here is incredible! Foodhedz isn't easy to find, if you are not a local. As you get off I-70 at the Firsco/Breckinridge exit, there is a large shopping center on your right with a Safeway at one end, and a WalMart at the other. Right about in the middle there is a nondescript sign that simply says "Cafe". This is Foodhedz. Every item of food prepared here is a labor of love - this place is run by chef's for foodies. Every item is prepared fresh, to order, except for the three soups made daily. We had the beef and barley soup - definitely not Campbell's! Rich and meaty, with plenty of red wine in the broth, we got the bowl, which is small tureen size. The cup is what I would call a bowl, but with food this good, go for the tureen! Then we split the special of the day, a Cuban sandwich. This was simply the best Cuban sandwich I have ever had. The ham was sightly carmalized, and the pork was incredibly tender - like pork should be, but seldom is. And the size - I don't see how anyone could eat it by themselves! Huge portions seem to be part of the deal here. The little girl at the table next to us has the mac and cheese (not your mother's mac and cheese, but something much richer and rewarding) and it came in a bowl so huge that it barely fit on the table. Even with her mother's help, they were going to take a ton of it home. If you can find this place - definitely check it out - if you like incredible food in ample servings. read more

I can echo the fantastic reviews! I had the Reuben sandwich (not big on cheese and sauerkraut, so even though a nice sweet/sour twist I pulled most of it off the huge sandwich). It came with super, interesting (in a good and creamy way) potato salad, deep fried pickle spear, and a couple of chips (maybe taro)? Truly excellent. Husband got the chicken in a sort of Mexican sauce with large corn kernels and black beans which tasted fresh and light. However, the giant corn kernels are kinda hard. I don't think we'd get it again, mainly because everything else on the menu looked so good to try instead. The dessert was a-maze-zing. We got a chocolate cake with homemade gelato. As a former employee of Food Hedz I can say that although the food is mostly tasty and well made the chef (David Welch) and his wife Patti are very mean and unprofessional towards their employees. The chef "accidentally" put a meat sauce on my vegetarian dinner and failed to tell me. I only found out when one of my co-workers told me about how they were laughing about it after they realized what they'd done but the chef never told me sorry or that he even realized what he'd done. Needless to say as a life-long vegetarian I got sick. Also one family reported that thee out of the four of them got horrible food poisoning from a steak they shared at Food Hedz, when the health department came in to talk to David they explicitly said that it was because of the steak, and that it was under-done and/or bad. Once the health inspector left David blamed the front of the house staff for the food poisoning saying that it was somehow our fault when he was the one who cooked the steak. FOOD HEDZ DOES NOT TIP THEIR STAFF! I could not believe this when I first started working there. They take all tips and put them back into the restaurant, NONE of the money left as a tip by the customers goes into the pockets of the wait staff or the cooks. I wrote this review in hopes that those of you who continue to eat at food hedz don't waist extra money on their already over priced meals tipping the helpful servers who do not receive your hard earned money. read more

Just walk next door to Walmart and buy some some lamps, and a shade for the blinding light from the kitchen, so it doesn't feel like a Chinese all-you-can eat buffet restaurant.
