I don't have a problem with paying less for groceries but, let's be clear, if you're shopping at a place called Food for Less there's a reason for it. Keep in mind that not everything is Ralph's or Trader Joe's fresh. It's a step above what you get at the 99 cent store so keep that in mind. Every worker here has an attitude except for like 2 cashiers, no one wants to help you. The butcher department especially is full of it. They see a line of people and just walk right to the back, and you can see them laughing and playing around as soon as that door flaps open. read more

I went there today with my class of nine children. I spoke to manager saying who we were and that we would only be ten minutes. I wanted the kids to have the experience of shopping in a grocery store, checking prices and viewing new products. The manager said " Next time go thru corporate office. No smile, no welcome like all the other businesses in the plaza, what a jerk. The other businesses gave business cards, calendars, book markers, note pads, took them around their offices. I did not ask for anything from the manager except to go in and walk around. Next time, and oh yes we will go back, I will not bother to go to the manager. The other employees in the store were very nice, smiling at the kids ( nine year olds ), and even the shoppers were nice. Again the manager was a jerk. We walked around, bought pumpkins for all the children, and walked out. For being a neighborhood store that all the children in this community go to, the manager should be more polite and welcoming to people. These are future shoppers. Their families go there to shop paying with hard earned cash. Fortunately, the children didn't even know what the manager said. But I did and my assistant did. Just because the store is in a poor neighborhood does not mean they do not deserve respect. How shameful to have no manners. read more

I came here yesterday to purchase something from the meat section. Like always I grab a number and wait till its called. One of the workers was helping random people instead of calling out numerically. A lady walked up and told her it goes by number and that she was next. She responded with "Oh well, I'm new here so I dont know." My turn came up and again the female worker helped a random person. I kindly told her "It was my turn and that I always shop here and normally it goes by number." She rudely said "Well I'm going to help her first." Really? I wasn't even rude to her and she didn't care about the fact that I was waiting in line for a long time to be helped. I asked her for her name and that I wanted to speak to her meat manager. She said her name was Ana. When she came back from calling her manager she came out with a big smile. Basically saying she doesn't care I was about to report her. When the manager walked out he also had a grin on his face. The whole time I was explaining the situation he kept looking behind the stand where the workers are and he had that grin on his face. Honestly because of the way he handled the situation I don't even know how he's a manager. He just didn't have the characteristics of one. His name is Jose and I'm pretty sure he didn't care one bit about the bad customer service I received. Also, the girl Ana had her long hair in a ponytail and every time she would reach to grab something her hair would fall forward. This is unsanitary and Food 4 Less shouldn't allow employees who are handling food wear their hair like this. I love food 4 less. My family and I have been shopping there for the last 10 years. However, last visit at the store, the cashier ZANDRA totally ruined my experience. She was rude and giving me her negative attitudes at the check-out. She accused me of saying something which I did not say in front of other customers and made me feel extremely uncomfortable. ZANDRA has poor customer services skills and never smiled at customers during the entire check-out process. Food 4 Less needs to hire more friendly staffs to enhance customer experiences! read more

Came to this store with my Aunt, I do not shop at these store. And today's visit here reminds me why I do not. Store has alot of traffic and not well kept. Produce and meat departments do not have a very good selection and not quality. So sad that shoppers think they are getting great deals on products, but truthfully prices are the same as a Vons and Albertsons, where I shop. This food 4 less is not too shabby. They have a surprisingly good selection of wine here, and a good chunk of them were on sale. I purchased a good bottle of merlot last night for just $5.99! This branch is fairly clean and has cheap groceries. The parking lot is spacious but still packed - they might want to consider having more cashiers during their busy hours. I been here since they first open and been a regular since then. Great price and you always seem to find what's needed. My sister and I stop by to pick up some last minute item for our BBQ and on our way out the door was approached by the security for a handbag search! Seriously... we walked in grab veggie and meat and was in line within 5 minutes. We are well dressed adults, so why would he have any suspicion that we pocketed some petty item. I come here alot noticed they had some nice umbrellas on top of the isles for sale but no price was shown the Manager named Richard was called he came over told me the price and where they were on the floor. I didn't see the one I wanted that was on display asked Richard if he would get down the display for me, he did but was bothered by it. It didn't have the bottom pole thats ALWAYS in the box never do you get it without. Richard tells me that just how it is. I showed him the sign that showed 9ft. tall umbrellas he says that means the width. After he walked away I pulled a pole out of one of the other boxes and bought it. I had the worst experience at this place. I was trying to purchase taco shells. When i got to the registe the cashier maria had to get a price check on both boxes of taco shells. So i wait then she said i should pay for the rest and i did. It turns out the taco shells had no tag. So i wait like 10 minutes for the lady in charge of that. The lady peggy gets there finally only to tell maria they couldnt sale them to me. She didnt even bother to come and explain to me. If anything she just looked over the shoulder. What no Hummus? Aww man. That's my main snack of choice. Other than that, great prices. Decent variety of food and it's within walking distance of my place. It's also located in a shopping center with good food all around. It's convenient to pick up essentials but I am going to have to make a trip to a farther store to get my hummus fix. As for customer service, not too friendly, not overly rude. A few treat being there like most people would, it's a job. So they do it. For WIC recipients, like myself. Keep and eye on the label tags. Sometimes food that is labeled as WIC approved is inaccurate. You may have to get out of line to replace jars of baby food. The reason for this is because today My parents and me were at the food 4 less and when we got to the cashier with our kart the power when off and all the cashiers started running to the main doors to close and one of them started telling the others to close and not let anybody go out while another one of them was telling all the customers to start walking to the entrance. I often shop in El Monte's food4less, I have no problem with the service nor their products. However I've been noticing how bad they treat their employees. The first time I notice this was when a young girl was helping me and a really fat man looks like it was the boss his name tag said SAM started yelling at the poor girl to hurry up and finish the go backs. I found this so rude and unprofessional because this man didn't care that the poor girl was helping me. In another occasion I saw this man yelling at another employee and telling him that he was too slow, again this was infront of customers. What is this, I ask my self? Why does he embarrased them in this way and when they are working. I have seen that they only have one employee doing everything in the morning, like they are missing people or something. Then a girl is always pushing carts out in the sun, like come one guys should be helping her. And this Sam guy he should treat them right, motivate them not take advantage of these kids because all of the employees look like they just got out of highschool. This store is good. The prices are better than other grocery stores, the employees are helpful and nice. I would've given it a 5, but this store is not safe. They need to hire some type of security or they have to do something to have the customer's vehicles safe. Recently I went to this store and when I came out of the store my car wasn't there anymore. While I was there walking around several people asked if I had left my keys inside or something, to which I replied that my car was not where I had parked. One person then said that a week before they had stolen her vehicle from that same parking lot too.
