10/19/22 Strolled into this local supermarket to see if I can find some postcards to send a Yelp friend, Klaus. To my dismay, nothing worth sending because the selection was super limited. My husband said it's best I go into a boutique type of shop for the kind of postcard I'd want to send to Klaus, something special, not ordinary. But of course I'm nosey & took a stroll in some aisles to see what they have to offer. For me, it appears that it's a convenience store, but bigger, a bit outdated. Think of it as a 7-11 but with more aisles. It'll do in a pinch if you're looking for some items during your stay in the island.

The Surrounding beauty!

The selection of food and other necessities was good and quite diverse. It was helpful being able to get smaller selections of stuff since we weren't staying in the island for a month. The people working there were very helpful. My wife and I found everything we needed and something's we didn't know we needed. The shopping center this store was at was charming and the surrounding was breathtaking.

It is a reasonable place to shop for food, drinks in this area. They have everything from fresh fruits, veggies, soaps, daily needs, etc. Price are compatible to regular market. If you are visiting Princeville and do not want to spend arm and leg at resorts' market or restaurants, this is a good place to stock up your hotel's fridge. The service is friendly and fast.

INSIDE is your smaller type market but I have to say they had everything our big group needed. Even a sharpie marker! Nice selection of ice cream on the far left wall. Red Bull vending machine outside. They have generic brand name items for the lowest priced. Definitely some big sales to help you save big at Big Save. Aisles are kind of small. I saw them polishing the floors at night so you know they take care if the place.

It is a grocery store with more in a majornshpoeing center in Princeville. And I mean major as in big Kauai. They carry all your needs from fresh veggies and fruit to everyday groceries and toiletries, gifts, beverages, and more. There is a deli and poke bar inside as well.

It's a grocery store + drug store + hardware store. It had DayQuil for when I got sick after some d-bag on the plane hacked up his lungs all over me from Baltimore to Phoenix. It had shrimp chips to soothe the sting of being sick in paradise. It had adorable barefoot keiki running around giggling and spraying each other with water guns. I approve.

Not a huge store, but a convenient place to get the essential you may need. They have fresh fruit, meats, and other staples as well as bakery goods and a small Cafe. Don't expect any great deals though, but that's pretty standard for anything on the island.

We picked up local items like ice cream bananas and ube mochi which were excellent. Not many poke items which I was disappointed with.

Typical "super"market for Kauai, however what sets them apart is they have a Subway inside the store.

So during our trip to the…read morenorth shore of Kauai, we stopped into this location to explicitly get a variety for our lunch on the beach. It turned out great. Foodland is a Hawaiian original, founded in Honolulu on 1948 as Hawaii's first modern supermarket, and continues to be owned by the founder's family. It has 31 locations across the islands, but only one is still open in Kauai (the Lihue location closed during Covid). It's kinda hidden, so would need to explicitly look for it. It's a medium size supermarket. The poke station and hot deli are located together with the same associates manning both. It was busy and crowded around that area, so important to pull a number and wait. Once my number was called, got seven different items and the associate was patient. My wife doesn't like poke, so made herself a hot lunchbox for a good price (one Korean chicken drumstick at $2.50 each; cheddar cheese tots $2.79 for 0.31 lbs; one corn cob $1.29) while I made a deconstructed poke bowl ($3.38 for 2 scoops of white rice; chili garlic crunch ahi $4.80 for 0.30 lbs; Poke fresh ahi hawaiian style $11.56 for 0.34 lbs; california style ahi $4.80 for 0.30 lbs). My favorite was the California style, with the avocado. It reminds me of the taste of a California roll. Hate to admit it, but paying for almost triple the price for fresh ahi tuna isn't worth it...the from frozen was still great as a poke.

The poke was delicious and super affordable at less than $10 for a bowl. I think the key is that…read moreyou need to ask for a sample to find your favorite poke flavor. We found that the spicy tuna was softer and more delicious than the salmon pokes. I can see how people would rate the poke less than 5 stars if you purchase a flavor that you end up not being a fan of. We also loved the crispy chicken thighs from the hot food section. Surprisingly the poke and crispy chicken from Foodland ended up being one of my favorite meals in Kauai!!

This location offered a wide variety of food options, including ready-made meals, hot foods, deli selections, and more, making it a convenient stop for quick bites or grocery shopping. What stood out most was the handcrafted sushi selection from Zenshi. There was an impressive variety of rolls to choose from, including California Rolls, Spicy California Rolls, Crunchy Rolls, Rainbow Rolls, Crunchy Shrimp Tempura Rolls, and Seaside Combos. They also offered additional items like Summer Rolls, Big Wave Poke Bowls, Spam Norimaki, and Calamari Salad, which added to the overall selection. I decided to try two Rainbow Rolls. The quality of the sushi was decent; not bad, but not particularly outstanding either. The taste was tolerable enough, especially considering the fairly reasonable price point. Overall, Safeway provides standard food offerings for customers and gets the job done. Clean grocery store and well-stocked along with plenty of parking and friendly associates.

So decided to go to Costco to see if their optical department could tighten my Costco glasses before heading back to the mainland. The optical department closes earlier than the store itself, so we ended up wandering around. We intentionally went there on the last day after our luggage had been packed, thinking it would prevent us from buying things to bring back. But there were two things that we don't see on the mainland, that were of good price: 1.5 Coffee beans from Molokai Estate Coffee (100% from Molokai, and which my wife confirmed later was very good) and a Ube cream Liquor from the Philippines, that went great with the said coffee. Both fit in our checked bags and made it home safe. It wasn't too crowded because it was close to closing and was of large size, including self checkout lanes. Another good visit to Costco.

We arrived late in the day, so we missed out on the fresh poke and other seafood goodies. At least were able to grab some bottled water, Taro Brand Salmon Lomi, and chips. Those items alone were worth grabbing, and lasted us the entire week. My admiration for this location is because it wasn't as crowded as the Honolulu locations. Or maybe we just arrived at a good time late in the day on a Monday. Here, we were able to navigate through easily and select various treats for gifting. Like Mauna Loa chocolate macadamia nuts, a variety of Hawaiian Host items, and I tripped out seeing these bell pepper crisp and a ramen crunch snacks. We bought two bags of furikake and shoyu flavored rice crackers, or arare. In the bakery, I died and really wanted to try this fresh baked Mayorca Suprema sweet roll. Check out my pic, you'll be droolin'! And you can't leave the store without buying a bag of Island Princess Macadamia Popcorn Crunch or their honey roasted macadamia nuts. We did see cheap, but made of decent quality rain jackets if you need one ($19). As well as some bargain deals on casual shoes and sandals. No problem upon check out, service was cordial. And oh yeah, their outside food court is the standard. Hot dog and a drink $1.50, chicken bake, and a slice of pizza. Sadly, nothing different. No issues finding parking either. In short, this Costco location has a wide variety of items not found on the mainland. Great gift items as well as supplies you'll need for your resort stay. I mean, you can go to the Island Market or ABC Store, but that's where it can start to get pricey. Just my thoughts and my words. To each his own!

With the beautiful weather and easy parking, the setting was perfect for a great time. But found out that it wasn't worth the 50 minute drive by itself, though there are plenty of places to visit on the north shore around that area...still worth the trip. We arrived a bit earlier than the 09:00 start time, so parked near the Hanalei Pier, and walked across the sand of the beach to enjoy the morning before arriving at the market. The market was fairly hopping by 09:30, with 30 different stalls selling their wares. My goal was to find two things to munch on first, as we walked the market: some sliced white pineapple and malasadas. It's clear that for food items, the market does an effective job of making sure a type of a food item is sold by only one vendor at the market...it really inflates the price. White pineapple is a lot less hardier for transport, thus hard to find on the mainland...but definitely a far superior pineapple in terms of sweetness and juiciness. The vendor that sold it here, presented it in slivers inside the typical cored pineapple container. I saw it right away, but noticed that there was no price....it ended up being $20 (I was committed at that point), which is pretty steep for maybe 1/4 of a pineapple. I found the malasada vendor, making it fresh on-site. We only wanted to taste, so got one for $3 non-filled...and it was disappointing...just OK. Should have tasted a lot better considering where we were. We circled the market multiple times, and ended up staying for about an hour. It's a market geared towards tourists like me, not locals: you are not going to find a local restauranteur looking for produce for his/her dinner menu here. Speaking of being a tourist: did end up buying a nice print of nearby Anini beach that we will frame at our home to remind us of Kauai...the artist was super grateful. The picture itself gave me a mission to find that view at Anini (as we were heading there next).
