We picked up local items like ice cream bananas and ube mochi which were excellent. Not many poke items which I was disappointed with.

This store is functional, but ridiculously overpriced. Product availability is decent. Staff are reasonably friendly. Put the store definitely takes advantage of the opportunity to charge much more than necessary. read more

10/19/22 Strolled into this local supermarket to see if I can find some postcards to send a Yelp friend, Klaus. To my dismay, nothing worth sending because the selection was super limited. My husband said it's best I go into a boutique type of shop for the kind of postcard I'd want to send to Klaus, something special, not ordinary. But of course I'm nosey & took a stroll in some aisles to see what they have to offer. For me, it appears that it's a convenience store, but bigger, a bit outdated. Think of it as a 7-11 but with more aisles. It'll do in a pinch if you're looking for some items during your stay in the island. read more

The selection of food and other necessities was good and quite diverse. It was helpful being able to get smaller selections of stuff since we weren't staying in the island for a month. The people working there were very helpful. My wife and I found everything we needed and something's we didn't know we needed. A small little grocery with a small produce section and deli. Kombucha on tap is closed for Covid, FYI. Like everywhere on the island, produce is a little pricey by mainland standards, but it is what it is here. I gave them an extra star, however, for carrying a fav of mine: bubble tea in a can! At $1.19 ea, sometimes on sale for 0.79, it's a great deal compared to the bubble tea cafes and soooo delicious! Our favorite flavor is the matcha. It's not strongly organic-tasting like most matcha stuff. We buy a dozen at a time to have it for a hiking/beach treat. Yes, it's sugary but sooo yummy! They sometimes have a clearance basket up front too. This time they had Valentine's candy for super cheap.-kids were thrilled. Woohoo! read more

Price is reasonable unlike the other grocery markets. You can bet it's cheaper than Costco too. For example pineapple at Costco was $2.99 each, Save market was about a $1 and some change. I would suggest going to Costco for steak and shrimps. Come here for fresh produce and snacks. read more

Here's why - 1) smaller but it has everything you need; 2) less chaotic / crowded; 3) friendly and helpful staff; 3) fair prices (hey, everything is more expensive vs continental US!); 4) shorter / quicker lines than Foodland. I also found that coming here during the days allows you to make the most of all the interesting smaller shops (vs Princeville Center lacks this). read more

Then there was the young guy, who had Aloha, all over him. He made us feel, like they wanted our business. Next time we came in, we did not feel welcome. Small little market with limited selection. $4 for green onion!!! ($0.33 in LA). Someone tag a picture of poke deli but they don't have the poke selection pictured. SS saimin is not fresh and they have no Portuguese sausage. They basically sold tourist food. You definitely have a better selection at Foodland in Princeville. read more

I am a resident of Princeville and have always had good experiences over the years at the other Big Saves on the island. But the employees - at least the 2 checkout ladies that are normally there are really, really, rude and unfriendly. It's ironic that people retire in in Hawaii, given that the sticker shock of everyday items would send many to the grave that much faster - $4.75/gallon of gas, $22.00 for a small bottle of olive oil. That's why there's a Big Save. 'You Save (though not so big)' in comparison with some other places in northern Kauai, but in comparison to other groceries outside of Hawaii, Big Save i probably en par with a local drugstore or convenience grocery, or is a little higher. There's everything you could ever want here - healthy and fresh looking garlic, coffee filters and flip flops. Ahi Poke made fresh in the deli section, local baked goods. Big Save's centrally located among the tourist area and is smartly stocked with things that visiting tourists would want (read : lots of booze and sunscreen products). Very convenient among a mecca of coconut sunscreen, neon shorts, shaved ice, ove-rsweetened Mai Tais and mediocre restaurants. read more

It's a grocery store people. Things that you must buy: 1. Hawaiian Poke from the deli. I'm not kidding you, it's beyond delicious. Better than most restaurants. Perfect blend of furikake, sea weed, ahi, sesame, green onion, etc. Watch out, it's ADDICTING!! Grab some and hit the beach or enjoy while drinking beer from the lanai. 2. Kauai Kookies from the cookie aisle. They're made on Kauai and I swear they put some Hawaiian crack in there, because in one week we went through nearly 4 boxes. My personal favorite flavor is the Chocolate Macadamia nut. My husband actually crushed some up and poured milk on them. We're gluttons. 3. Drinks - Koloa local rum (it's sort of pricey $32 a bottle, but it's local deliciousness), POG, Wimea Lilikoi Wheat Ale. Save yourself some $ by cooking in a few nights if you're visiting. For being in a remote part of a remote island, this supermarket is very well stocked and their prices are surprisingly reasonable. They have everything you would need from a Safeway with about the same quality and cost. Don't let the convenience or size of it fool you if you're in need in Hanalei, this is a legitimate business. Big Save Market isn't exactly big, nor does it save you a ton of money. It does, however, save you time in having to hunt down all the things that you need. Reasonable prices and stocked with most of your basic needs. Think of it like an edited supermarket. We needed bacon, champagne, and water shoes. Found them all as well as a bunch of other stuff we meant to pick up elsewhere but got it here since we were here. A great find. They have a deli counter inside that'll make you a big sandwich for $5.99, which is a steal in Hawaii. Plus, you can pick up a package of cookies for after your sandwich. I had an interesting experience here.... bad energy from staff - aloha spirit from management! I came in with a backpack on after having been camping the night before... I was just getting coffee and there was another guy with a backpack in line. The other guy apparently forgot his wallet and worked in town... so the manager came over and gave the unknown guy a few bucks to buy his stuff and pay him back at a later date. I was super impressed with the Aloha Spirit of this manager as he clearly didn't know the guy, When I got up to the cashier she was super rude, and dismissive with her body language, I asked for $5 cash back in single dollar bills and she handed me a $5 bill. When I asked for singles again she got super pissed and almost threw the money at me. Not sure what I did to her.... but when I walked outside to see the amazing waterfall flowing out of the mountains I completely forgot about it. read more
