Foodmax is a 5 minute walk from my house so I always shop here when I'm back home from school. Any further, and I wouldnt go. If Trader Joes, Safeway, Albertsons, or any other grocery store were closer I would go there instead. Foodmax is the epitome of average. - You bag your own groceries - Their cash registers are set up really weird. You're on the same side as the cashier and you have to go around them? - Produce is rarely fresh and constantly surrounded by flies - staff isn't the best - Lines get incredibly long I have been coming here ever since it was food 4 less only due to its convenience and sheer laziness. I've noticed more so that FoodMaxx is starting to become expensive. I didn't realize that almost all goods are at least 10% higher. Peanut butter jams coffee and Meat and Fish is through the roof sometimes they have some good deals on vegetables and fruits. But relatively ok. read more

I drop by at the FoodMaxx about once a week. They have a big parking lot, I never had to park far away, even during weekends. The store is like a mini Costco minus the traffic, crowd and pressure to buy large volume to get a good price. It is far less fancy than a grocery store, and the low overhead reflects in prices, Some produce items are 30-40% off Safeway prices and in general I save at least 8-10% over Safeway. The lines are slow sometimes, but you do get a variety of ethnic food that are not available in regular grocery stores. read more

In the Newark/Fremont area, this is my favorite FoodMaxx. The parking lot is huge with lots of stops and it is a lot less busy compared to the FoodMax near Fremont Blvd. I am a fan. Maybe they have more stuff at the other location, but i am a-ok with the selection i had going for me. Prices were cheap and nearly comparable to the inexpensive snacks i could find at the winco in the tri-valley. It makes me that much happier that i moved out here away from the Altamont. Though like others have mentioned the produce does not seem to last as long as i would hope. So do not let them sit around once you've purchased them. read more

I was around the corner (getting a pedicure) when I remembered that I had to get a couple items to feed my family. Therefore, I went in to browse around. This location has a wide range of selection and prices seem decent. Parking is never a problem but customer service seems lacking. There's never anyone around to help you. Whenever I come here, there's only 2 cashiers and the line seems never-ending. What I hate the most is when I pay for my stuff, my groceries is stuck at the beginning of the check out "belt" and the cashier doesn't even bother making it move or even push my stuff down the "belt" so it'll be easier for me to bag my stuff. read more

Just purchased a six pack of Shock Top beer. 3 bottles were almost empty. The tops still on them. Didn't notice until I got home. Called the store the manager stated there is a state law we can not retype gets refund on our purchase. Lesson learned check before purchase. Will not be going back to this store. read more

Absolute surprise. It's similar to Pack and Save which I used to go to back in the day in Daly City. Prices are good, produce is decent...some of the patrons put me on red alert, but it's ok. I like living dangerously. I was able to get all I needed to make dinner for way under the price it would've cost me at Safeway. Two thumbs up! EDIT (7/30/14): I've been coming to this particular Food Maxx for about five years and I will continue to do so for as long as I live in this area out of convenience (I mean, who has a favorite grocery store, really?) BUT, they recently changed out all the aisles of the store and have not made an effort to label where any of the items are. It wastes my time when I have to walk around looking for the new location of a product or flag someone down to help me find it. They also need to hire a couple of more workers for every shift or have more cashiers open because it does not matter what time of day I go to the store, there's ALWAYS a long line. (05/14/13): I'm really appreciative of the store manager who was working on Tuesday (May 14 around 2pm) who was patient in teaching a new disabled employee on how to work the register. I like shopping at this branch better the 1 in Fremont. I shopped there on Wednesday morning because their is a lot of variety of products, clean, more organized and service is better. I really like this store. It is a warehouse/ grocery no-frills store where you bag your own groceries. Their personnel might not be the friendliest people, but I'm not shopping there to make friends. I'm shopping there to save some money. The store is clean, bright, their produce is good, and they have a relatively large selection of products to choose from. In addition to that, they are open 24 hours a day. I would recommend this place to anyone who is interested in saving some money at the register. read more

This store is fairly clean and organized. The cashier (as of my last visit) is nice and fast. But the other staff's customer service need some improvement. I couldn't find the item I needed and asked one of their staffs around the check out area, she pointed a direction and said "should be around there" then get back to her... work? This place opens 24 hours. Depending on the time you shop, the line to check out may be pretty long or no wait at all. For the past recent years, I've noticed this place usually open 2 or 3 checkout lines at most. Other than this, the price of their grocery items are pretty competitive if not one of the cheapest around. I like the days when lines are not long and the new cashiers come fast to help you with new lines. One blond cashier with glasses always closes the line when I go there, and I have decided it's because she has something personally against me. The strawberries suck lately. "Nature ripe"? Funny after taste and filled with huge strawberries with pesticides. I like the mangoes, and apples, and do not mess those up now. FoodMaxx is a part of our weekly grocery shopping ritual. We always stop by this place after the Newark Farmers Market, since it's close by. Prices are excellent for the produce and grocery items. It's always great to see "Ad Beater" signs, especially for the produce. In addition, the produce is fresh and good quality. Our weekly necessities are: + Avocado - We buy the pre-packaged avocado bags (5 for $4) + Fuji Apples + Bananas (usually $.59/lb) + Bread + Milk + Yogurt + Lunch meat The lines for the checkout stands can be long. I have been going here for a while and they always deliver quality. i have had some issues (returns) in the past but these guys took care of it. No biggie. This store has absolutely turned itself around over the past year and a half. Not only is it super clean and organized, the staff is excellent! I have seen such dedication amongst them to help me find everything I need and always with a friendly smile. Every department is well stocked and provides awesome customer service. Even during the Pandemic that hit in 2020. Whoever the store daytime manager is, should be highly recommended. This is the usual grocery shopping spot. It's not always the cleanest -- especially the parking lot. They don't always keep their disinfectant towelette things stocked at the front, so I usually bring my own to wipe down the shopping cart handles. Also, I wish they would stock more boneless, skinless chicken breasts. It's as if they're gone when the sun goes down. Other than that, like everyone else has said, fresh produce (unless they're out -- but that's because the prices are so good, people take everything), great deals on everything in general, and check-out service is quick. read more

I went here to shop last Dec. 9,2019 7:15pm so I asked if they accept Apple Pay and the cashier said yes! then I used my apple apparently the cashier charged me twice and I went back with her to get my money back. She called Michelle to do return transaction then the lady cashier asked me to go to her station cashier, I forgot which station cashier but then I went there and Michelle asked me with the rude tone "can u help you or something" and I said they told me to come here. She replied "if your going to return something you should get back in the line" she embarrassed me in front of everyone and argued with me then I replied I'm not returning anything the lady cashier charged me twice and I want my money back she argued with me and kept telling me I should get back in line and she keep talking and yelling at me and the guy came over small light skin with beard Latino/ Spanish not sure. He started talking to her and he looked at me I couldn't hear what they saying but I know they're talking about me and I literally went back in line. The guy just looked at me and dint help me out at all. I don't understand why they have to be rude when they're the one who messed up and made a mistake, just because it's a return that doesn't mean they have to be rude with every customer who does a return. I simply want my money back, why would I have to go back in line and wait again so after I waited in line she asked if I was charged with these transactions so I showed my bank account and she return my money back with no apology at all. I was embarrassed with your customer service and how you guys treated the customers. No one help me out and they even made me look like I'm returning something. CUSTOMER SERVICE TRAINING NEEDED ASAP I went into food maxx last week and I was walking down the freezer section when I saw two store employees, one I think is a manager. I recognized one of them, tall, long brown hair, very pretty. The other, I hadn't. She was also tall, African American. I didn't really see her face because it was glued to her phone. I was minding my own business walking slow as I was looking side to side at the freezer. When I stopped, all I heard was "you don't need to walk up on me like that ". I jerked my head but she wasn't looking at me and since I was the only one in Isle, she must-have been talking to me? Really? When I got to the register, these 2 employees were at a closed register and the rude one on her phone. I mentioned (not so quietly) that she was very rude. Her response was "I wasn't talking about you". I hadn't said why I thought she was rude, but she knew what I meant. Hmm. First of all...IF she wasn't speaking about me, she should have apologized immediately. But she just continued to be defensive. An apology for misunderstanding goes a long way. Second...IF she were referring to another customer in the store, how dare her voice her complaint out loud where someone could hear her. I've been going to this store since 1989 and customer service has really fallen short (the produce guys are still amazing) I was very disappointed in the other lady's response too. Please check expiration dates on any item that is printed by manufacturer, especially if they are on sale. I noticed that first 3years ago, mentioned to manager and it got corrected after I threatened to notify it. I noticed that again two days ago. Progresso soup were expired few months back, %70 Chocolate bar were expired and some expiring in May of this year, ready to eat Indian food (MTR) also expired. The only other FoodMaxx that I have frequented is the one in San Jose and that location is terrible! The meats and produce is no bueno. The only thing I have ever gotten there was beer, because it's cheap and open 24 hours. You can imagine how surprised I was when I came to this FoodMaxx. I was actually only stopping by to grab a package of hair ties, but I got a glimpse of their produce and I was very impressed. I plan to come back to pick up some fruit for lunch some day. read more

There is a lot to like about FoodMaxx. Forget about a captive Starbucks, sushi bar, a wine section that goes on for several isles, pharmacy or a gaggle of butchers. This is pretty much what your grocery store looked like before "super stores" emerged. But don't get me wrong; this isn't just staples and nothing else. There is a very good selection of groceries, packaged meats, bath accessories, home care items, frozen goods, etc. Their fresh food is excellent and very reasonably priced; this, alone, is worth visiting Foodmaxx. I will confess to two things that delighted me recently at Foodmaxx: 1. Alpha Bits! I grew up back east (as did Mrs. George) and we have this latent addiction to Alpha Bits. I say "latent" because, unlike serious drugs, we can live without them. But we always crave them. When we moved here 20+ years ago, you could buy Alpha Bits easily. Then they went away. We would ship them to our house when we visited "back east"; that's how pathetic we really can be. Now, for who-knows-how-long, Foodmaxx has them. 2. Coffee. I start the day by grinding beans and making espresso. Have you seen the cost of beans lately at your average store? How about $9 or more a pound. Yikes! You can get 2 pounds of coffee at Foodmaxx for $9. That's $4.50 a pound. Is it any good? Of course! Beans is beans, so why pay double for them elsewhere? On the downside: the lines can be long. They do have the "self bag" situation, but that's not why lines are long. Lines are long because there are few checkout stations, the folks who buy here usually buy a lot of stuff and there is no "express" checkout. When I hit the place after work during the week, it's usually not so bad; I've seen it worse at Safeway (see my review). Weekends are challenging. But it's worth it. The staff and clientele are good people; shop here and save yourself a few bucks. read more
