We loved this place. We were down for the 2017 eclipse and tried several places in the area and the food at the Foolish Frog was the most fresh of any place we ate. Sitting outside on a hot August night was no issue... it felt right. You can also sit inside, which is shabby chic, but outside is the place to be. We tried the spinach salad that was generous and delicious, Mahi tacos which were delicious, the crab cakes were all lump crab and delicious and a fried shrimp platter that was ample, fresh and expertly cooked. The staff and service were great, albeit it you will wait a bit, but the wait is worth it because the drink specials are excellent and everything seems made to order and why it is so fresh. So chill out and try your hand at getting the ring on the hook or take in the views. My suggestions for the owners would be to get on top of the inventory. They were out of a few things we really wanted to try, and that seems to be some of the negative reviews. For to-go order! Upon pick-up, the door was opened for us, and the host was very accommodating showing us where to go to pick up. This place is much nicer on the inside than it is the outside! We got the food that was nice and hot, and was still hot when we got it home (about 10 minutes). My husband and I both got the Shrimp 'n' Grits, and split the Fried Pickles. The Shrimp 'n' Grits had a nice creamy sauce to it with loads of flavor, and super plump shrimp cooked to perfection. I had to run out to Fripp Island for a work call and my co-worker was heading that way from Charleston. We decided to meet somewhere in the middle and chose the Foolish Frog. Its an ideal southeast coastal setting, resting right on a marsh type are with plenty of live oak trees adorned with Spanish moss. One could easily see a movie set placed here due to its natural beauty. The parking lot is narrow and small and my long truck took up a lot of room, so if you have a large vehicle, you might want to head toward to back of the lot to allow passage of other vehicles. Inside the place is what one would think it looks like. A little old and moldy and Hemingway-like, but nothing too malodorous or repugnant. I had to wait for my buddy to walk in but was approached immediately to order. After he decided to saunter in, we ordered. I got the fried flounder and he got the fried platter. It was the best fried flounder I have ever had! The breading was so good. It was ultra crispy and not greasy at all. It was almost like a panko crust but not quite. I hear the secret to a good fried crust is adding baking soda (or is it baking powder?) to the flour? Whatever they did, it was perfect. I got a double batch of fries because that was the only other option to satisfy my hatred of cole slaw. It was a lot of fries but they too were good. Why the four stars instead of five? Went to lunch here twice on our visit to Beaufort this week. It's soft shell crab season so lunch #1 had to be the soft shell crab yum yum ya ya. This northerner is not really a grits person so when I devoured the crab and the fried grits cake under it, I said, "That was grits?!" It's given me confidence to give other grits preparations a try. It was also my first time eating soft shell. There is just a hint of breading so all you taste is the crab- which is how it should be . Also had Chef Will's key lime pie for dessert. The best in the area! Lunch # 2 was the Reuben sandwich with a side salad. Full disclosure: I try Reubens whenever I see them on menus; I'm judgey when it comes to them. So trust me when I say this sandwich won't disappoint. The brisket is cured in house as is the kraut. It's the kraut and the legit seeded rye that makes the sandwich imo. They put the kraut on the grill first and so it is caramelized yet retains that great tang. I LOVED it! Bread was thin and grilled nicely which I liked because there is nothing worse than thick overly buttered Reubens. You can taste every component in this one. The Frog's Reuben is in my top 3. My bf had the mahi tacos(2). A good healthy piece of fish with a dusting of breading and house-made slaw. They put the tortilla on the grill for additional flavor and texture. Just had a fantastic dinner at Foolish Frog! It was the best Tuna I've ever had and it was 1 of 2 specials for the evening. The other special was Mahi Mahi and was ordered by my FIL and he said it was very good. I ate one of BBQ shrimp( appetizers) and I think I will order it next time I go there. I had 3 pints of the Fat Tire draft which explains how I teleported home and I am now typing a review on Yelp! I also ordered the peanut butter pie which was very good. Not too heavy and very smooth. I like the portions here. Not too big and I was able to finish my meal--some dishes aren't good to take home and reheat. Hopefully, I'll be able to add some pics to this review. Great dinner with family on the back porch facing the marsh. The fried okra is the best I've had (with a great sauce) and the fried pickles and fried green tomatoes were also good to start with. Those three starters were plenty for a group of 7 of us. I also had the Cajun crawdads which were fun. I'm used to crawdads coming with a bit more liquid in them, but it's probably just a different preparation. The only thing that didn't live up to my anticipation was the fish tacos appetizer--it was good but not very warm when we got it and not mind blowing... We visited the restaurant on vacation in May 2021. We had a large group (7adults,2kids) and called in a reservation. Didn't have to wait at all to be seated. However, due to being understaffed (seems to be everywhere), difficult getting supplies, and their fryer & steamer not working it was a strange experience. We all 100% agreed that everyone that was working was busting their tail to keep things going- I don't think I've ever seen so much hussle from a waiter (ours was Zach). We did have to wait a very long time (1.5hrs) for our food, I do wish we would have been provided with some type of food to help compensate for the wait (all appetizers were not available to be cooked) or free dessert or something. I gave the 4 stars because only one out of our 7 adults would not have come back due to her food being very over cooked but she didn't say anything because she was not willing to wait any additional amount of time; everyone else's food was really good. It would have been nice to visit this restaurant pre-Covid or maybe when society gets back to "normal"- lots of issues outside of the restaurants control and we can empathize which is why I didn't give a lower review. This place was okay. Nothing to write home about (NY). I ordered the Frogmar Pot. It was loaded with shrimp, onions, potatoes and sausage, and visually looked great. Unfortunately it was a snooze fest. I salted my pot voraciously and poured melted butter on top with hopes to shake things up. If only the plentiful shrimp had more flavor, I could forgive the blockhead chunks of potatoes doing nothing for this dish but taking up space.
