Cannot say enough about this place and going to it was equivalent to a child going to Disneyland. I only wear barefoot/minimalist shoes and most come from Europe, where they make you pay for shipping for returns if they don't fit. The shipping sometimes costs more than the shoe! I live in San Diego, and no store like this exists anywhere near me. Just to be able to walk into a physical barefoot shoe store and try them on was amazing. I have been dreaming of a place like this for many years. I got into the barefoot movement long ago and there were so few shoes available. Now it's possible to walk into a place where you can try out all of these different brands and approaches for yourself. That would've been amazing. But the staff are also so helpful and knowledgeable, and every time I've been in there I've also had great conversations with the other people shopping. The selection here is not bad. I'm vegan and try my best to stick to vegan options. The first time I went into Pie, per the suggestions of my husband and our good friend (both into minimalist footwear), I was helpfully guided through the shoe selection process. I can't remember her name but I remember her mentioning that her partner tried on a specific pair of shoes and that her partner was a "she". Anyway, she was absolutely lovely. The second time we went, it was two different femme presenting people. The place was a little crowded and we came as a group so we wanted to be mindful but we were all allowed in. That's fine. The two salespeople (one turned out to be the owner) were stoic and pretty much just at the cashier, standing there. I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they didn't want to hover over people and wanted to be neutral so that people could approach them if they wanted. That's fine but also awkward. I do wish they had a bigger selection of vegan shoes. Out of desperation, I bought black Lems today because they didn't have green. I normally don't wear black but I came here because I had to try on the shoes (I can't just get them online if I don't want a headache). And I can be a jerk and just try on the shoes and peace out and buy it online (which is probably what a lot of people do) but I do think it's important to support local businesses. So I'll probably buy another pair (a green one) but won't be getting it from them since, well, I can't! Would be nice if they had a children's section. The owner mentioned she didn't have kids so it makes sense that's not her market. Too bad though because I would've spent more $$$$. I got to give props to this place! The only retail store I have seen on the west coast that carries my favorite shoe brand Terra Plana! I was very happy to finally make it down from Seattle to check out the shop. They also carry other eco-friendly, minimalist type shoes like vibram five fingers, Tom's shoes, Earth shoes etc. The prices are actually not very far off from what you find on-line. They are really friendly and helfpul with selections and upcoming products. If I lived in Portland I would be here more often! read more

I visited the store once and my initial impression about shoe selections was great. I came as an initial customer, hoping to establish a long term relationship with a local brick and mortar store as I like to support local businesses - and especially when their values are similar to mine (in this case the brand of footwear they carry). However, when I discovered their prices were marked up above the suggested retail prices (at least in the case of Lems Shoes), I was immediately put off. Surely the store must have a wholesale account with the manufacturer and gouging the prices above suggested retail does not seem conducive to fair customer relationships. Therefore, I walked out and thought to myself - 'geez the store owner just missed out on several hundred dollars of sales and a long term customer relationship..' Why do merchants have to gouge their customers? When I inquired with the person in the store, I was told I would be paying shipping if I order directly from the manufacturer anyway. I just don't buy that as a justification for selling merchandise above MSRP. Too bad, I will shop elsewhere - and go online if I have to - while warning friends to watch the pricing at Pie Footwear. read more

I'm not quite sure how the name came about, but the company believes in providing footwear that abides by their "sustainable ingredients standards" (provided that items comply with the product level, corporate level and social benefits). I came in window shopping with my cousin who happened to snag a pair of Tom's. This cute little shoe store offers a bunch of eco-conscious footwear and accessories. This little shoe boutique is also "vegan-friendly" as well. Brands that you may find here: Tom's, Vibrams, Chaco, Dr. Martens, Earth, El Naturalista, Ethletic, Keen, Merrel, Jambu, Novacas, PUR, Patagonia, Teva, Simple Shoes, Timberland, VivoBareFoot, Palladium (and several more!) Prices seem reasonable for what you would see at your regular departments store. The employees are very friendly and helpful! I enjoy shopping about as much as I enjoyed getting my wisdom teeth extracted. Alas until I find a magical gnome to take care of all of my shopping for me, I periodically have to muster up enough nerve to get the job done myself. Such was the case of finding a pair of comfortable work shoes to combat the tile/cement floor I stand on daily. After procrastinating on this mission for nearly 8 months, I had no more excuses left in me (shocking I know) and had to cave. Determined to avoid the evilness known as the Mall, I went the boutique route instead and decided to give Pie Footwear a chance. I totally would be lying if I didn't admit I chose this particular shop over others because of it's brightly colored exterior...gotta get those endorphins going somehow! Right off the bat I appreciated that the selection was big enough to have options, but small enough not to be overwhelming. I discovered lots of new brands, most of which were very Portland savvy (i.e. Toms, Earth, Terra Plana, Barefoot, etc.). I instantly found a few pairs that I deemed ok to try on and would have called it good there, but then came along one of the very informative and super friendly employees. I am 95% sure he was able to sense my discomfort levels, because when he came over he started shooting the breeze. Before I knew it he had me up and walking around the store, making sure to hit the textured mats and a hallway of wood and concrete to get a better sense of each shoe by walking on different surfaces. Like always, common sense won and that move totally helped narrow down my choices. I ended up getting a pair of work shoes as planned as well as a tennis shoe I liked (woohoo another future shopping extravaganza avoided). I was pretty stoked that I walked away with two pairs of vegan/super comfy shoes. I have been wearing them non-stop since I bought them, they totally were worth the time it took to find them. I did find it slightly funny that one of the shoes I purchased came with a half inch book/guide. In my twenty some years of shoe wearing I have always assumed the process of shoe wearing was as follows: Step One: Put shoe on foot Step Two: Pending on the shoe...buckle, lace, snap or, velcro Step Three: Walk Have I been doing it wrong all this time?!?! Perhaps I will have to read and find out! While my shopping quota has been reached for a while, I would totally go back to Pie Footwear in a heartbeat. This store has a really good selection of minimalist footwear. I felt inclined to write a review after reading some of the others posted on Yelp. I have been in a few times and have also bought some shoes from this store. The "shop girl" (I believe she is the owner) does stay behind the counter, and really only comes out if you ask for shoes. That said, she always greets with a nice "hello" and is very helpful and knowledgeable if you ask her questions. She spent considerable time helping me find the right pair, and answered a slew of questions I threw at her. She knows her product line very well. To me this is quite refreshing, and far superior to a pushy salesperson who comes out, harasses you, and yet doesn't know a thing about what they are selling. As far as the ugly selection of shoes, most are quite fashionable. If you're going for the minimalist, eco-conscious stuff, Pie is the most fashionable store I've found in Portland. This is doubly true when it comes to my preferred brand, Vivobarefoot, as Pie has a large selection of their line. read more

Such a great store! Selling amix of minimal and traditional foodwear and acessories. My wife and I came in and the owner was very attentive without hovering, she helped us find a pair of sandals we both ended up loving so much we both walked out wearing them! But before deciding to buy the sandals she answered all if our many questions and help show us how to adjust the fit just right. Alright, I must start this review with an admission. I have a more than mild obsession with shoes, always have. I own more than 60 pairs. Who better than a self proclaimed shoe addict to review a shoe store? Pie was recommended to me by a good friend as a great place to show my art (more on that later.) When I walked in the shop the first thing my eyes were drawn to was not the walls, it was the wonderful collection of shoes. I found a pair almost instantly that could replace my over-the-hill favorite pair of shoes. More pairs quickly added themselves to my collection. I kept thinking that I had found all the pairs I "needed." This is where Pie stands above the crowd. They have a knack for ordering new styles and designs so regularly that every visit will reveal a new gem, without it ever seeming like anything has been removed. Beyond shoes, the folks at Pie supports the arts, their neighbors, their costumers and the planet. Their art shows are as good as any gallery in the area. I am now the proud owner of 11 pairs of shoes from Pie and haven't worn anything not from their in over a year. I love PIE! read more

Yesterday I went to Pie looking for some vegan boots and was disappointed. I was expecting a selection of vegan shoes, not just a sampling. Maybe they don't put boots out till it gets cooler? Their Website says they carry "a wide range of footwear from everyday casual to evening wear and professional styles." That's a bit of an oversell, based on what I saw. This is an outstanding little shop with a great selection of several of my favorite brands of shoes (Vivo, Topo, Altra, etc.), some of which can be hard to find. The owners and staff are kind, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful. Their regular prices are quite good, and their sale prices are great. I really appreciate being able to support local businesses without having to break the bank to do it. This is my shop. I FINALLY have one shop I can go to when it's time to buy shoes. Phew. The lady who was working was very pleasant. Soft spoken, but truly knows her products and footwear in general. The store is small, but clean and spacious inside. Access to a bathroom, which is nice. She helped my friend (male) with his choice. She explained throughly what would the pros and the cons of two similar, but different brands of shoes. She was helpful without being too pushy. Stacy helped me find the perfect pair and was able to give me very valuable advice. Wow! Pie footwear, you are the best! Not only do they have a great selection of minimal footwear, but they also have fantastic customer service. I came here in October last year to get a pair of VivoBarefoot Scott boots. Unfortunately, (through no fault of Pie's) I got a defective pair - the glue was coming off the right boot completely, the laces frayed almost immediately on the left, and both had a weird discoloration. I attempted to contact Vivo about these problems and start the warranty process. Man, am I glad I bought these from Pie Town; Vivo completely ignored my emails and phone calls, so I went back to Pie and asked them to contact Vivo on my behalf. Sarah got in touch with Vivo just a day or two after I came in and within a couple more days had a response that I was eligible for a warranty claim. The catch was that Vivo was completely sold out of the Scott, so Sarah offered to replace it with another model they had in stock, which worked out fine for me. I came in, got sized by Amy for the other model, and because there was a price difference in the two models, walked out with two pairs of insoles and a pair of socks along with brand new vivos (these ones are sewn, not glued!). I came in and was the only customer in the shop, and the shop girl stayed behind the counter the whole time, except when I specifically asked her to grab shoes for me. WHat a disappointment!! They offered us leather shoes, stating they just sold the last pair of vegan dress shoes. although we came to Portland from DC for more than this store...for vegans who need professional style shoes...this store is not worth the trip. read more
