Best shoe store in town! I have been coming here for over 20 years for both work boots and my everyday shoes. Most shoe stores stop at a size 12. I am a size 15 so this creates a problem for me. I was very impressed by the variety of inserts at Al's. Both my wife and I have found that the right over-the-counter inserts (not custom made) can provide a surprising amount of additional comfort to whatever footwear you choose. Al's, as the name states, carries an impressive array of work and recreational shoes and boots. The employees are very knowledgeable, and in the case of my wife's specific needs, willing to direct customers to another store if there is something that is not carried in-house. I went In today to get a pair of work boots for a job I just started. The company I work for gave me a 150 voucher. The sales rep who is short and bald was a complete dick once I mentioned using a voucher. I was able to ignore his negativity up until he offered me a free AL's calendar I got a ride there so I asked if I could grab 2 and that must of set him off more he looked at me and said they are pretty popular and go fast lol so no. A smile and a yes go a long way it was a 50 cent calendar. Do better read more

I wear a size 15, extra wide. Fortuitously, I've lived for decades 1/2 a mile from Al's. If you have large feet, this is the place to go in Portland. Can't speak for dress shoes but any athletic or hiking shoe or boot, work shoes, boots with several animals hides to choose from. I know where to go when I'm there and the staff lets me be. A long time new balance wearer, they have a fine selection, and got my keen hiking boots (actually work boots but they're great for hiking.) Be careful you don't get steel toed if you don't want them. And they have a selection of regular sized shoes, sandals, slippers. read more

We have bought several pairs of work shoes from Al's for our family. Being located right on 82nd Ave between Woodstock and Foster makes it very easy to find. The parking lot is a wee bit small, but there is street side parking right around the corner of the store. This store has a wide selection of steel toe/ work shoes to pick from. They have a good variety of different brands (e.g. Wolverine, Keen, Dr. Martens, Caterpillar, etc.). The price is a little bit more than you would find online, but it's a local store and we like supporting our local businesses. Furthermore, with work shoes it's sometimes best to come try them on to see how they feel before making the purchase. We had to place an order for a pair since they were out of the size that we needed. The employee assured us that the shoes would be arriving in about a week. After not hearing anything back from them in over a week I decided to give them a call. The person I talked with advised me that they haven't received the shoes yet and to check back after a few more days. After the 2 week mark I still hadn't heard anything back so I gave them another call and was again advised that the shoes had not yet came in. This went on for several more weeks and finally into the 5th week mark when I again called and was told the shoes were not in yet. We decided to asked them for a refund since this is now over the 1-month mark. He told me to come into the store and they would refund me. A few hours later we received a call from one of their employees indicating that he had checked further into our order and that these shoes were actually backordered but he expected them to be delivered within the next week or so. Since we had already walked over 4 weeks we opted to just wait it out. We had called the store about 5-6 times previously to check on the status of our shoe order and were NOT informed that the shoes were on backorder nor did they do any additional follow up on the delay. It wasn't until we asked for a refund that somebody finally contacted the manufacturer and provided some concrete information as to why the shoes took so long to get to us. While the shoes we purchased was a good quality product at a good price, we will probably not be coming back here due to the bad service and lack of communication/ follow-up. Had we known initially that the shoe was backordered we could have chosen a different pair/ brand instead of waiting. Their lack of communication and follow-up was frustrating to say the least. read more

I hit this place up with a few of my co-workers to pick up some new safety (steel or composite) toe shoes. Their men's selection of such shoes was quite extensive, featuring Wolverine, Doc Martens and other well-known brands. I haven't done a lot of comparison shopping, so it's hard to comment on prices. For what it's worth, they show the retail price and their (lower) price for every shoe. The women's selection was fairly limited, but I'm not sure who has much more. The staff is what I would call "old school." You can tell they know their footwear. They are also very willing to help you find a the right shoe or size. When I paid for my shoes, the man at the counter looked very hard at the signature I had made on the receipt, touching it with his pen at various points to signify that it matched the signature on the back of my card. I had never seen that. Like I said, old school. We stayed in the safety toes section the whole time, so I can't really comment on the remainder of their selection. I can say that I noticed some pretty hardcore boots (metatarsal covers, super tough material). I also glanced at some pretty sweet hats and sandles. I'm glad to know that there's a place like Al's filled with good quality products and people who know 'bout footwear. read more

My family used to come here all the time for boots. Unfortunately after the experience and rude service that we had today we will no longer be shopping here. I understand that with COVID everything is difficult but when you have someone who for their health can not wear a mask and you are extremely rude to them while they are tying their hardest to be respectful and fallow the rules that's not okay. The negative reviews on this place are more people airing their personal issues with themselves than with the store. They have a wide variety of styles and prices on boots/shoes. I've bought my work boots here for the last 5 years and have never had a negative experience here. I would avoid belts, socks and other accessories from this place because the prices are a bit high. Overall though, if you have a horrible attitude you will have a horrible experience. No matter the store. I would recommend this store to others. read more

I've been going to Al's for over ten years. I wear a 14/15 so most of the time shoe shopping is finding a box with a 14 on it then deciding if I can live with the look of the shoe. Al's gives me a chance to actually pick a shoe or boot that I like first! On average Al's has 15 shoe and 15 boot selections for me in the 14 or 15 sizes. But that's not all; Al's carries sizes below 14 as well! It's all there waiting for you. read more

We have driven by Al's for over 30 years. Today we decided to stop in and see what they had. We were pleased to see a wide variety of shoes and boots and helpful but not oppressive sales staff. This place is old school, still hand writing the sale on a spreadsheet, owner and grandchildren still working the sales floor, even on a weekend. We found 2 pairs of shoes, one for work and one for everything else, both good prices we felt. I will return to Al's and encourage everyone to support this local business. read more

I've been going to A'ls for years and will never recommend them to any one. They have the worst warranty and customer service anywere.There boots are cheaper but beware.I bought a pair of boots 3 weeks ago and the toe ripped . They wouldn't even give me credit or another pair of boots. With that kind of service they won't be in business very long. They are straight up cold if you need to return them. My husband gets an annual boot allowance for his work boots and Al's is the only place to go. They carry a mind boggling array of boots and shoes for every kind of job. They can get you whatever your size is in whatever boot you need, so walking away "without your size" is not a problem. The service cannot be compared to any other shoe/boot retailer in town. They know their brands, they know what you need and they have your size. They also have boot accessories weird size laces you cannot find elsewhere. We will not go anywhere else. I live 30 minutes away from the store 60 minute drive round-trip. I called the store and they assured me they had size 11 and 11 1/2 in an engineers boot! Guess what! All that ways and they had a 10, 10 1/2, 12,,,, nothing in the 11 range. I would think long and hard before I would step 1 foot on Al's shoes and boots property. With arthritis, ankle replacement, knee replacement, fallen arches, and numbness in his poor, sad feet, my husband went to Al's Shoes & Boots looking for relief. He explained what he wanted to the sales person and was presented with several choices. In short order he was fitted with 2 pairs of shoes that he finds "perfect", plus miracle of miracles, one pair's even made in the USA! I've shopped here for years but that has come to an end. The first time I have ever had an issue with one of their products occurred last week. The sole was coming loose from a pair of shoes worn for less two months. They informed me they could only send it back to the manufacturer for repair if I could provide the purchase receipt. I couldn't and I find it hard to believe that the manufacturer would require MY receipt in order for Al's to return a product for repair. Why would I do business with them in the future when I can buy the same thing with the same customer no-service from an online retailer for 20% cheaper? I try to shop locally because customer service is important to me but Al's has poor customer service so I'll take the cheaper online prices in the future. BTW, the first online retailer I checked was 20% cheaper and offered free shipping/free return shipping. read more

DON'T SHOP HERE! I went in on 1-9-15 to buy a pair of boots was the only person in the store and got no help which was fine. Bought a $150 pair of Wolverines from Al's 5 years ago this is the 2nd pair loved the first. Wore them Monday And Tuesday and they killed my shins and toes. Note; exact same pair as before. Took them in following Friday to exchange or return, the same clerk said that they and Wolverine wouldn't accept them back. After explaining to her how bad my legs were hurting she had the gull to state that my weight is probably the problem! I left! I "STRONGLY" encourage people to shop elsewhere. I immediately called the Wolverine company and explained to them what happened and she stated that Al's was wrong on the return policy of Wolverine boots. Went to Al's today looking for a pair of woman's insulated goulashes. As I opened the door, I noticed a female facing me with a serious look on her face while looking me up and down. Not much to my surprise, she is one of their associates. Upon asking me what I was looking for, she stated that they did not carry women's goulashes (only men's) however, she went to find out for certain. She headed towards the men's boots and looked around. We followed shortly afterward, then after she found out they did not have any, came back towards us, checked us out once again and I then asked her a question. I made mention about going onto their website and researching the various brands they carry as well as looking into each of their websites because I desperately need a pair of boots... Well before I could even finish my question, she cut me off. I was wondering if they could order a pair of boots for me if I found a desirable pair on their website. Needless to say, with customer service like this, we will not be back. I understand you do not carry woman's goulashes, that isn't the main problem. The problem I have is with this associate's customer service skills or lack there of. I have never been treated like this before now and I'm wondering if this is how she treats all of the customers. Don't bother to try and look around... There was only one other customer there who came in seconds before us and he went over and sat in a chair while waiting to be helped.
