I was really disappointed with the service I received from foothill recently. I've taken my bike here before and there were no issues except that it was a bit pricy for my student budget. Nonetheless, I came back with my Schwinn road bike to get the front wheel replaced, new tires and tubes, and a new derailer to tune it up for the school year. I made it super clear that I needed the bike asap because it's my only way to class and to work. They told me it'd be done by Saturday but by Tuesday I still hadn't gotten a call. When I called to ask how it was going they had no idea who I was or which bike was mine. Turns out they lost my slip and did no work on my bike, it was just sitting there. I was really upset and have decided to take it somewhere else because $160 to work on a bike isn't worth it after waiting for nothing. I did appreciate that they pumped my tires and offered to do the derailer same day, but after all that I would've expected a discount or something more than "sorry, this happens when we get a lot of bikes in" Thanks anyways foothill. read more

My wife and I purchased a Yuba Mundo cargo bike through these guys a few years back. We've loved it up until we had too many kids for my weak legs to pedal anymore. The guys are Foothill walked me through what electric add-on to buy down to the last detail. They did an amazing job on the install. Possibly worst place in SLO to buy a bike. Showed up with girlfriend and waited 20 minutes, then the person "helping" us said that we could not see a bike because we were, 10 minutes late, still 25 minutes before closing, AFTER we had waited in line! When he walked to the back and I looked more cla bike next to the front he then yelled at me to "get back behind the shield." Horrible experience every time I have been to this shop. Sad! Thanks to Hunter, Tim and Colin for an amazing ride. My 11 yo who is not a great biker was able to feel confident and said it was his best bike experience. We rode the Bob Jones City to the Sea Bike Trail to Avila Beach and it was a beautiful ride. Went for lunch and explored Avila then did the return trip. The service is exceptional. They have been understandably swamped with business during the COVID-19 pandemic, but they were able to fix my bike a week sooner than the 10 days that predicted. My bike came back running like new at a cost that was surprisingly lower than I imagined. And the employees were courteous and attentive on the phone and in person. I really needed a bike helmet right in the middle of Covid virus therefore unable to really go around and shop. Did some research online, got ideas of what I wanted and then called Foothill Cyclery to see about a purchase. On the phone they were polite, courteous, friendly and gave me very good information. They instructed me to come to the shop, that they were prepared to serve customers during this time. The store was set up to protect customers and the employees were attired properly. They were so courteous, so kind, so professional and so knowledgeable, all during difficult circumstances. Customer service was really really great and on top of it all they will deliver my helmet! I live in San Luis Obispo, and I'm very familiar with all of the bike shops in town. They are all fantastic places to get bikes, and each has their own approach. Josh has a great shop at Foothill Cyclery, and here are a couple reasons. 1) He is the only Trek, Gary Fisher, Bontrager dealer in SLO. If you love those products, then they are your store. 2) They have a friendly staff that know bikes. They race for the local collegiate team, and ride with the local clubs. It's great to have your questions answered by experienced widers. 3) They do a great bike fit, with no hassles. 4) Sales people are not pushy, and help guide you to the right products that fit your needs. 5) A wide variety of bikes for all types of riders. As I've said in my other reviews of SLO bike shops... they are all great places to shop. Each shop has a unique product line, and unique way of doing business. First of all, this is 3 stars for the RENTAL portion of the business, not necessarily the rest of the business. I rented a Trek Rail 5 for a 2 day camping trip up the coast. When I arrived I asked jokingly if I could get their best Trek 5 rental. They said, "We have two but one's already out so this is all we have." OK. No problem. But then the employee grabbed a bike off the rack that was pretty dirty, so I asked if they wiped them down after each rental. They said, "We can't really clean them after each rental." Uh... not sure why, but OK. No problem. Then he wiped it down a bit. I was concerned at that point so I said, "Do you check these out after each rental and set it up for my weight and height?" He said yes, and I had given them my info online when I rented it, and I could see that the chain had been lubed, so I took him at his word. When I got to my campsite I noticed that the seat was low for someone my height and that the handle bar was off center. Also, the dropper post got stuck in the up position unless you put a lot of weight on it. I fixed the handlebars and seat height, and the next day went on a log uphill ride. The derailleur kept switching gears on its own in the middle gears, indicating it hadn't been tuned up lately. Also, they said the battery would last approx 15 miles in turbo mode, but after 7 miles it was 80% gone, which is an indication of an old battery. When I returned the bike I told them the derailleur needed tuning and the battery wasn't holding a full charge, and they kind of didn't acknowledge what I said and just put the bike back on the rack and sent me on my way. Now, they were very busy both times I was there, and they were courteous and knowledgeable, and I can see they get good ratings here, so I think they're a good store with good employees. I just don't think they care that much about their rental business, and I think that maintenance of rentals, which is an expense with no specific income benefit, especially when people are waiting to pay for maintenance, is simply not their highest priority. Also, this is the first time I've rented a mountain ebike, so this may be the pinnacle of experience out there. But, bottom line, there is a loss of income here because I won't be renting from this store again as I don't trust what I'll be getting for my money. read more

I am currently in the process of building a bike for a class project and they have been so helpful in making my bike look beautiful and getting it done on time. Every time I needed a service done, it was done the same day and for a great price. Every part I needed for my bike was available to me with a good range of prices to choose from. That said you're not shopping here to get a smoking deal, try ebay if that's what you're looking for. I needed a bike quickly for my freshman daughter at Cal Poly, I sent an email request and received a quick response regarding available bikes. After reviewing their recommendation, I contacted the store directly and spoke with Ryan in Sales. He could not have been more helpful. He endured my endless phones and finally came up with a fully loaded bike for my daughter. I ordered on a Thursday and received a call on Saturday afternoon informing me my daughter's bike was in. There was a slight hiccup with my order and delivery but Grant and Colin were able to straighten it quickly. For me, its how they dealt with my hiccup that makes them first rate. read more

Been here twice. First time, I was in need of some fenders and second time I wanted to purchase a mountain bike. Accessories are outrageously priced, but that's not what gave them this star rating. No, one far more despicable in my book; being shunned after getting sized up. I used to work at a bicycle shop and every shop I walk into is starkly different. It's not about the customer here. I came in at noon, in need of a mountain bike. I walk in, not even greeted by the redheaded/ginger girl at the front desk who should have been taught to at least welcome a customer first thing even if you can't help them right away. After standing at the entrance looking for someone to help me and kind of just awkwardly standing by the desk, she finally said "I'll help you as soon as I'm done with this gentleman, sir." Okay, I'm not cut about that. So I wait. A guy comes by who works at the store, decked out in his skin suit and his boys are bulging about as he helps a customer who just came in (after me) and went to the $2k bikes. Meanwhile the girl at the front desk who said she would help me decides to tend to this lady who just came out of nowhere. I understand college kids might be a dime a dozen, but I needed a mountain bike that day. My budget was $700 and I was ready to pay in cash because I needed a bike asap. Pissed off, I just left and got a bad taste in my mouth. I feel like the crew is elitist and stuck up. But it doesn't surprise me, because there's one shop full of people like that in every town. I just wish it wasn't the closest one to campus. Do yourself a favor, check out that bike shop that's near the corner of California and Monterey. 2nd closest to campus and the crew. Though well seasoned roadies, they are modest and there to help. Funny thing is, that guy that was checking out the $2k bike, left without so much as a handshake. The lady bought a spare tube. Meanwhile, the college kid who was about to lay down $700 cash on a quality bike, leaves and spreads his experience to many out there. Really pleased with the staff and service at Foothill Cyclery. We are new to the area and felt welcomed and were treated well as we purchased some tires and a rear light for one of our bikes. After having trouble putting the new tires on I brought them in and was promptly helped and had the tires on my bike in just a short time. Josh and his employees are courteous and very knowledgeable.
