Crispy Shredded Beef. $25. Too much breading, even for this dish
    Glenn C.

I went to this Chinese place a while back with a group, having previously been to the Szechuan spot that used to be in this location, So Do Fun. Compared to there, the menu is pretty different, including dim sum and some classic American-Chinese dishes, with less emphasis on spicier fish dishes like Suan Cai Yu. Negatively, they used to give these rather delicious pickled vegetables to begin with, but now it's peanuts. They have a few interesting drinks, and I had something made with matcha and a few other things for around $6, which was decent. In general, the prices were pretty reasonable for the quality, with a couple of pretty good things, and a couple of dishes I disliked. For the food, we had a handful of dim sum/appetizers and some main dishes. Of the dim sum, the Dan Dan Noodles at $9 were decent but needed more chew and spice. The Shredded Tofu Skin With Scallion Oil, also $9, was good, with crunchy tofu skin and solid umami flavor. My least favorite was the XLB/Pork Soup Dumplings, which were $8 for 4. Though pretty well-flavored, they lacked soup, and the skin was too thick. For main dishes, I liked the $25 Cumin Beef. It was moderately tender, and there was enough cumin flavor. Also solid was the Twice Cooked Pork for $18, with there not being too much douchi/fermented black bean for it to be too salty. The $20 Dry Pot With Chicken was alright. There was a good amount of meat, but it lacked much mala, so it lacked flavor. If the spices were there, this would have been very tasty. The King Pao Chicken for $16 was OK, too. It was more American-style, being a tad too sweet for my liking, but thankfully, the breading wasn't too thick. Speaking of sweet, I disliked the $25 Crispy Shredded Beef. This felt like one of the few overpriced things, with the batter being too thick as well. For veggies, the The $16 Dry Sauteed String Beans were solid/standard, with the beans being properly charred. Better was the Eggplant In Garlic Sauce for $16, with plenty of flavor. My least favorite dish by a mile was the $20 Stir-Fried Asparagus With Rice Cakes. Outside of it being extremely bland, the rice cakes lacked texture. The food here was alright. It ranged from good to OK to alright to bad, depending on the dish. I might go back and try the Pagoda Pork Belly, as the only other spot I know of selling this has stopped, but I am hesitant due to the general quality. The prices are reasonable, but there's better Chinese, and I definitely preferred the old place in the same location a lot more.

For U is one of my favorite hidden gems in the city, and a place I find myself returning to again and again. It's special to me because I order their work lunch deals all the time -- you can get a generous portion of meat with rice for under $15, which is almost unheard of in NYC. The value is incredible, and the food is consistently delicious. Dining in is just as enjoyable. The restaurant is always spacious and clean, which makes the experience super comfortable whether I'm grabbing a quick lunch or sitting down for dinner with friends. My absolute favorites are the spicy chili boiled fish and the double cooked pork -- both so flavorful, comforting, and perfectly seasoned. These are the dishes I crave, and they never miss. I've brought multiple friends here and they've all really loved it too. The staff were attentive and understanding. If you're looking for reliable, delicious Chinese comfort food at a great price point, For U is the spot. Truly a neighborhood gem that deserves way more hype.

So satisfied. The boiled beef with chili sauce and string beans are so good. The bean noodles and chicken in chili sauce are average; not impressed. Ordered for the second time in a week the boiled beef - super generous portions of beef and vegetables that can fill two people completely for less than $30. Broth is tasty. Better than many other more famous Szechuan places in the city.

One word...FLAVORFUL!!!! Great Chinese food in a nice setting for the price! Our waiter was attentive and helpful! Seems like lots of locals judging by the waiters knowing the clientele coming into the restaurant. I started off w/ their seaweed tofu soup which I enjoyed. There could have been some bigger pieces of seaweed but I am used to the Korean version of seaweed soup which has bigger pieces. Maybe in this version it's supposed to be this way? Not sure. It was good either way. I could easily have this w/ some rice on a cold night. I tried one of my husband's vegetable dumplings. I used to make these w/ my Mom. These tasted homemade. Tony loved his fish dish and I loved my shredded chicken. Both very flavorful. The price point is fantastic. Note: Better to pay in cash and forgo some of the additional charges unless you don't care. We want to try their lunch special which also looks like a deal. We will be back!

So good that I dined here in person and then ordered takeout the next day! Every dish was so tasty. Some standouts were the dan dan noodles, the pea shoots, and the dry pot! I loved the tofu skins and the wood ear. The shredded beef was a bit hard to chew/more breading than meat. Service was good and speedy and it was very spacious inside! Will definitely go again!

Found this place by accident as it was near our son's pediatrician. We were looking for parking one day and happened to find a metered spot across the street from this location. The first time we tried food from here was a basic take out order. We ordered their lunch special and I also ordered their soup dumplings. The food was delicious so my husband and I both knew that we wanted to return. We dined in a little more recently, at the end of February 2024 and had a wonderful experience as well. The space inside was a dark colored interior of red and black but it felt spacious and open. There were plenty of tables and booth options. We chose to sit towards the back because we had our baby in his stroller so it was more spacious and quiet. We ordered their lunch specials. I had chicken with broccoli with white rice, came with a side of soup and I chose a spring roll. My husband ordered chicken with garlic sauce and we each placed an order for pork soup dumplings. Each soup dumplings order comes with 4. Our food was delicious. Soup dumplings were fresh and flavorful. We were adventurous and also ordered the spicy beef noodle soup. It was hot and spicy, warm and comforting. Noodles were firm and the beef was so very tender. The broth was fresh, hot and had a depth of flavor from the smoky spice used, and the hints of beef that infused with the broth. It was delightful. We took that one home because we couldn't finish it after eating our large lunch specials. The lunch specials offer a good sizable portion of white rice, some pickled cucumbers, spring roll and your choice of meat in a very big bento box. Overall, we enjoyed our dine in experience and will be returning again. They have high ratings and seem to be locally popular amongst a varied group of people from nearby workers to tourists and regulars. Highly recommend checking them out! Their lunch specials are the highlight of this place. With great affordable portion sizes, you can't beat that.

My coworkers and I ate lunch here on a weekday. It was about 1pm and the tables were not busy; it seemed like their to go was busier. They have a great lunch deal! I ordered the beef broccoli and it came with the appetizer (spring roll) and a soup of your choice. We enjoyed our lunch here as it was spacious and they did not rush us at all! We paid about $18PP including tip.

Good spot for lunch and dinner. They offer lunch specials M-F 11-230. Put an online order for pick up and it's ready in 15mins. Quick service. I like the shrimp with asparagus and eggplant with garlic sauce. Vegetable fried rice is too salty for me. I like their mahjong decorations. It's fun for me but I don't know if everyone will get it.

I have a taste of a shrimp fried rice.So I came over to For U when I hopped off the bus. The staff was friendly and patient. It seems like a lot of folks either are locals and/or regulars. It took a while to get my order, about 30 min. The rice was okay, a little bland. I had to add a generous amout of hot oil and soy sauce. Maybe the other dishes have more flare. If im feeling adventurous, id give ot another go. Be sure to arrive early. Evenings are when they fill up quickly.

So glad to have this spot right across the street. It's so authentic, delicious and affordable. I've tried almost all of their dishes and none was a disappointment. Both dine-in and takeout are great. I always order the fish in pickled cabbage dish and it's phenomenal. Can't wait to visit again!

The lunch special was a great deal! For about $16 it came with a soup and an entree. I got the hot and sour soup with the chicken and broccoli special -- both were pretty good! The soup was more impressive, but at less than $20 for a hearty meal, I'm not complaining! Good service as well -- I can see myself dropping by here again when I'm in the area.

The hot and sour soup was perfect.

Was curious about the lunch special, picked the hot sour soup, sauteed green beans with brown rice. The table water was excellent, came with lemon in a filtered carafe. The food in the boxes didn't all come at the same time but who really cares when you're eating? Bonus for the waiter already knowing what I thought was a hair in the tray was a crack in the plastic.

The food was fresh and delicious. Although we chose take out, the restaurant was clean and inviting. It would be nice to have a lunch or dinner there. Service was good!

There was a wait list to get seated when we arrived but the process was simple and moved quickly, and service was prompt and food came out quickly. We ordered both the standard pork XLB and my faves, the pork and crab ones, as well as pan fried pork dumplings which I was surprised to discover were also full of soup, chicken corn dumplings, and two noodle dishes: rice cake with pork & mustard greens, and pan fried noodles with beef. Servers were conscientious about allergies and very specific about letting us know which items were which, but other than that were largely appropriately hands off. They did ask us, mid-meal, if it would be ok if a service dog were at the next table to ours, which I thought was courteous. (The service dog was adorable and well behaved.) All the food was fab, which we expected. It's nice to come in a group and be able to order more items for a greater variety. The rookies executed well (and thanked us for the instructions on how to eat XLB to avoid getting soup everywhere) and were pleasantly surprised by my longtime favorite, the rice cake and mustard greens. I'll need to remember that the pan fried pork dumplings also have soup, because I really liked the texture of them. Such good food, and as always, better shared with friends.

I also wish they had rice noodle rolls, which I didnt see on the menu. Really what pushed it to 5 stars to me was the service. We came as a huge group of 20, with a baby and stroller in tow, and they handled everything without so much as a grimace, just an outpouring of helpfulness. They sat half our group at a round table and the other half at a rectangular long table and also helped us navigate dietary restrictions, asking specifically who in the group had those restrictions. The menu is labeled too, so you know which items are vegetarian or gluten free. At one point our helpful server noticed we hadn't really touched that awkwardly plated noodle dish and offered to replace it with another. We didn't take him up on that as I'd find that wasteful but I thought that was so attentive and earned them a generous tip. The space is nice looking, and the food came out very quickly. We also didn't break the bank, even with plenty of drink orders. Dao's is an easy recommendation, especially when you factor in how seamlessly they handled our chaos.

I enjoyed the cucumber salad and tofu as well, but have had better. Seasoning and prep were good though -- although the tofu was cooked so tender (or maybe was silken tofu to begin with) that the whole table was struggling with carrying it from plate to mouth -- heh.
