Out of all of the yarn stores I have been to in California, Oregon and Washington, sadly this beautiful shop has the most inconsistent customer service! I wanted to buy some yarn for a shawl pattern that I am making. I mentioned that I was excited about making the shawl, but I have never knitted with lace weight yarn. The associate was so helpful and excited for me. So I returned the following day and asked if I could exchange the yarn I bought for a fingering weight. "There are no exchanges." It was pretty obvious that I had barely tried to knit with the yarn. Then I asked if they had classes in knitting with lace weight yarn. Again with the same treatment, but this time associate said, "Well it's time that you learned." At this point I was stunned and I reluctantly bought a skein of yarn, after I had paid for it and it was wound for me. Sure there is a phenomenal selection of yarn, but serious attitude of some of the employees which is why I am not going to return. There are much better stores in Portland and the Portland area. read more

The 2 times I've purchased yarn (once online, once in person) they have had hard to find colors or bases in my favorite yarns. However, I felt exceptionally put off by the staff. They were quite unfriendly and unhelpful. And I was the only person in the store with 2 staff. I won't be going back. read more

I went to For Yarn's Sake to purchase an interchangeable needle set. I was still a beginner knitter and did not know very much about needles. I asked a couple of the ladies at the counter what the difference was between wood and metal needles (thought they would have the expertise to help educate me about needles)--they looked at me and then laughed at the question. I also don't like their no-return policy. read more

Ok so I've been in here a handful of times and i have to say they have allot of variety but the owner is always brisk and rude. When she isn't there the staff is way more cheerful as well. My hubby went in for Christmas gifts and they sold him 4 skeins if worsted 210 yards @ $15 each and told him that it would only make a hat and scarf barely. B.S.then we went I'm today and spent $100 and still the owner was barely helpful. Guess she makes enough money to snub people. read more

Lovely large yarn shop with plenty of free parking. They carry one of the largest selections of yarns in the Portland area. The staff are generally helpful, although not all are as knowledgeable as you may find at other local yarn stores, some of them are also not as forthcoming with yarn suggestions as I generally find in other stores. I like going to this store when I am in the area because they carry a really great selection of some of my favorite yarns and two or three of the staff are great. The reason they don't get 5 stars: ---- Attitude ---- They have a seating area in the front as well as a table for classes near the back of the store. There is a small sign in the front area that indicates that you should only sit there if you are perusing the pattern books or working on a project that you have purchased from their store. I find this is a perfect reflection of the stores general attitude. One day a friend and I chose to ignore the sign and we ended up spending quite a long time in the shop, very few other people were in the shop, between us we spent at least $150 - $200 on yarn purchases before we finally left. I did not feel bad that we were both working on projects that made of yarn from other shops. If we had not spent the time sitting and knitting, we would have missed meeting the staff person who eventually showed up wearing a great cowl that we both wanted to make. She was kind enough to spend about 15 minutes with us so that we could select the yarns to make our own. You decide what matters to you. In my opinion they don't have to change to please me, I will still go in when I am in the area and I will most likely spend my dollars on their yummy yarns regardless of the sign in the seating area. This is not my favorite yarn store in the metro area. I have a hard time finding the yarn I want in a color that I find palatable. I've never had a pleasant experience with an employee here and I have to wonder if that isn't at least partially because I'm under 35 and heavily tattooed. The last time I did purchase yarn here the lady did such a terrible job winding the skein that I had to stop every few rows to untangle knots. Next time I'm looking to feed my stash I'll be driving into Portland proper and save myself the judgment. read more

I had a great experience at this store. I was looking for a specific type and weight of yarn and the lady who was working was very helpful and friendly. I was sad to see the reviews of unfriendly staff because I know the feeling of shopping in a snooty yarn store and won't return to one once I've had that experience. At least one of the employees at this store is great! Also, I liked that they had a large selection and it ranged from more economical to very fancy/expensive. I tend to buy in the lower to mid range and there was a lot to choose from for me. read more

I really want to love this place. Although it's a little out of the way for me this store is huge and the selection they offer is truly amazing. The prices seem fair and they have a lot of selections for knitting extras such as bags and storage. I so with their customer service matched the lovely store. When I first walked in I was greeted by am extremely friendly woman who took one look at my pattern and said she knew exactly where that yarn was. Sadly she wasn't working that say and passed me to a sales associate who seemed less then enthused to help. One she showed me a few yarns she and another girl went back to reorganizing the store. I was ignored as they talked about boys and friends and everything else rather loudly. I'm all for having a good time at work, but the way they were talking just struck me as extremely unprofessional. I wondered around the store for another twenty minutes or so looking to add to my stash. I wasn't asked if they could help me find something else, I wasn't acknowledged at all. I did buy the first yarn I selected but I didn't buy anything else. Hopefully it was just an off day because the shop is awesome, but I will probably think twice before I come back. read more

Wonderful selection of yarn but service from staff is greatly lacking. I asked to have a skein of yarn wound and was told by the sales person that she couldn't do so as she was getting ready to close shop. Another customer in the store actually offered to do it for me! This is by far the best yarn store in the State of OR, biggest selection of yarn and vibrant colors

I used to love this store before they moved. Now there's more yarn and more space, but more space leads to employees completely ignoring the counter. This is the second time -in a row- I have been completely ignored standing at the counter, completely visible from all sides. The people who work there must not realize that they are in fact working, and should therefore maybe possibly check if someone is ready to check out. I suppose it is ever so much more important to coo over someone's project (not five feet away from the counter, BOTH employees working at the time did not deign to turn away from whatever obviously-fascinating piece of knitting they had their faces shoved in), or have their backs turned to the counter for minutes at a time chit-chatting away with someone. One time when I was being ignored, another customer finally told an employee that someone was waiting. This time I was just completely ignored, so I dropped my yarn on the counter and walked out. I think their little conversation might have slowed a little as they realized what happened, but I doubt it. Oh, also, during football season they will close during normal business hours with no announcement (not on Ravelry, Facebook, or their email newsletter), so don't expect to find it open when it's supposed to be. Unfortunately I still have gift cards to use at this establishment, so I'll have to go back at least one time so I do not waste money spent on me. I'll be taking my business to the multitude of other yarn stores who treat their place of employment as a job and not a social function. read more

I had a very good experience here. I was greeted warmly and shown how the store was set up by yarn weights. I showed the young lady working there a photograph of my pattern and she helped me pick out just what I needed. She even wound them into balls for me. This is a cute shop with good selection. The only problem with the shop is the older woman who works there. I think she may be the owner of the shop -- very curt and rude. I love knitting and going to the yarn shop is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. That is not my experience with this woman. The younger employees there are totally different. This is my yarn store in Beaverton. They have a large selection of natural fiber yarns and a wide range of colors and types. It's not cheap, so I try not too go to often. I feel lucky to have a store this nice within walking distance of home. read more

Suddenly I have a new favorite yarn store! I came through here during the Rose City Yarn Crawl, and was so excited to see such a big selection. They had a lot of fantastic brands, including some I'd never heard of. Everyone was very friendly and helpful, and they had a surprisingly awesome selection of project bags. read more

This store has a decent selection of yarn but pretty poor customer service. I brought some yarn in to select a coordinating color in Tosh light. Their computer indicated that they had the color I was interested in stock. The only woman on duty, when I finally pulled her away from chatting and knitting, literally said, "If I dig through this and find it are you for sure buying it?" Well, you know I came there to see the color with my yarn! But I said yes, and she found it (lots of yarn, pretty disorganized). Then I asked if she would wind it. "After you pay for it." was her response. There were four other skeins of yarn at $26.00 each that I was considering, but no way with that attitude. Also, there had been two women on duty when I arrived who clocked out. Before they left the woman who finally managed to wait on me, was discussing how a bunch of things had gone missing. I love to knit, but not when I'm supposed to be working and customers need help. They get 2 stars for yarn selection, but their service was less than one. I won't go back. read more

I submit very few reviews, but I would hate for anyone reading all of the negative reviews to avoid this fabulous store. I have purchased yarn here many times over the past six years since I started knitting. They have the largest selection in Portland, and the store is beautifully organized and staged. I usually check out their website before I come in, so I already know what I want and am able to help myself. If I am ever unable to find a particular item, the staff have always been friendly and helpful. I also took a class there on switching from English to Continental knitting, which was great. I worry when I think about all of the wonderful yarn stores around Portland that have closed (I already miss you, Happy Knits!), because nothing will replace being able to see the colors in person and touch the yarn. This shop has recently expanded and has beautiful yarns but the owner is not very friendly. Our Junior League group purchased yarn from her shop to knit leg warmers for babies at Emanuel. She asked us to pay for time to sit and knit even though we purchased her yarn. An acquaintance purchased some yarn and went in to knit and was pulled aside by the owner and told that she could not stay more than an hour to knit, Most yarn shops enjoy having patrons come in and knit, particularly if they purchase your yarn! Maybe the all mighty dollar is worth more to her than kindness... for my money, I will go elsewhere. Portland is loaded with yarn shops where the proprietors are hospitable and friendly! read more

There are lot's of yarn stores in Portland and this one has just dropped off of my list due to poor customer service. Not having enough yarn for the project I wanted to make with the skein I had purchased 4 days earlier, I went in wanting to exchange a skein of sock yarn for a different color, same brand, different color, and also purchase a skein of the new color and was told by the manager's daughter that they had a strict "no return policy on sale yarn". I didn't want any money back, just an exchange and a purchase of the additional skein. I teach knitting and have sent many a student here because of the selection, but no more. I hope your poor customer service was worth the loss of my business. read more

I agree with Jessica R. I have been in this store numerous times and it doesn't matter who is in charge. They are brisk and rude, do not help find yarn and are not excited about their product. Last time I asked for some assistance to calculate yardage (not 1 other customer in the store but 2 working there) and I was handed a calculator. There are wonderful, helpful, innovative yarn stores all over the Portland metro area and unfortunately this is not one of them. Last time visiting there. Too bad. read more

I know how great it is to not have to drive in to Portland to get yarn, but after visiting this store several times I save it for emergencies only. The staff is friendly enough so maybe it is the store policies I don't like. I have been in on several occasions to buy yarns for a specific project, and you know how expensive that can be when you are doing a sweater, or the Doctor Who scarf I am doing right now. What gets me is they are only willing to wind one scein of yarn. Now I could understand that if they were busy but most times I am the only person in the store. My other problem is their "fix it" policy. They charge you to ask them for help on a project. From my perspective if I drop on average $75-100 each time I visit I would think they could spare a few minutes to help. read more

High end yarn, but like others have expressed, there is a snooty feel from the shop owner, especially when spending less than $20.

Very unhappy with return policy - yes I was past the 90 day limit - however, I had the clerk calculate the quantity of yarn I needed for my project and she sold me double the amount required. I was wanting to exchange the 4 skeins @ $14.50 each for sock yarn - I was not even offered a restocking fee - just a flat no - and not even an "I'm sorry about the miss calculation. I am not happy and will not be back to this store since there are much better yarn stores in our area. I recommend the Knitting Bee at Cedar Hills and Barns Rd. Very nice selection of yarn and far more professional and helpful. read more

I was very excited when this store opened, but my excitement has decreased exponentially each time I have had to interact with the owner. Aside from just not being friendly, she has been downright rude to me and two of my friends whom I sent to her store. Among the issues I have witnessed/endured: 1. A skein of yarn that was so badly wound (knots, frays, cut yarn) that I was unable to use the yarn. 2. The owner pulled an instructor who was finishing a private lesson over to the side and told her, loudly, that the lesson had gone over the hour mark and had to stop. It was THREE minutes past the hour, the customer, was finishing the last row, and the instructor just wanted to show her how to finish the row correctly. The poor instructor was almost in tears after the exchange. 3. I purchased a knitting bag, and when I got it home, I found an inch-long hole in the seam. When I went to exchange the defective bag the same afternoon, the owner suggested that I had done something to the bag myself and she didn't want to refund my money. She finally agreed to exchange the bag for a different bag. 4. A metal knitting needle I was using for a project kept bending, so I took my project to the store for help picking out new needles. When I got the new needles home, they were the wrong size, even though the owner had helped me select the needles. She refused to exchange the needles or refund my money citing the store's NO Refund policy. I am NEVER going back to this store, and I'm actively telling all of my friends who knit to avoid the store. Interestingly, I keep running into other knitters who have had bad experiences at the store, all of which involve the owner. As much as I strive to support local businesess, this is one business that just isn't worth my support. I'd much rather drive 20 minutes to my favorite store, have a pleasant experience, and leave happy than walk 5 minutes to this store and deal with the owner. read more
