Run by a certified Toyota Master mechanic, the story goes that he finally started his own business after repeatedly being fired from every Toyo dealership in town for being too honest, telling customers they didn't need additional or unnecessary repairs, etc. How often does that happen? Gotta love it!!! His lovely wife runs the front office, which has some great art on the walls by her son, a very talented San Antonio artist and friend. These good folks have been taking fine care of my 4 wheeled baby for several years now and I'll be a customer for the life of my vehicle! Totally worth the drive to Schertz but watch out, the area is still a speed trap for us leadfoots coming from the city. Further up the road is a place that sells home-grown produce, eggs, jams and jellies. Sorry I can't recall the name but when they're open for biz a sign will be out that says "Eggs for Sale" or some such. read more

I took my first car, a 1984 Toyota pickup, to foreign affair at their previous location in 1994. I needed my carburetor rebuilt and every shop I called in the yellow pages (a phone-book, which no longer exists...) estimated more than I had to spend. I made the long drive with my dad and was pleasantly surprised with the service, friendliness, and expertise. And it was HALF the cost compared to other estimates. Over the last TWENTY years I have taken my Mitsubishi eclipse (which I had for 125,000 miles), and now my Lexus is250 there religiously. My dad takes his Hondas there. We are always pleased with Bob and Olga's professionalism, knowledge and candor. Sure- if you want fancy leather recliners, stale coffee, or donuts in a waiting room with a 50" flat-screen tv, go to the dealer and pay a lot more and leave wondering if you got taken advantage of. My radiator exploded in a Kia Spectra while driving on 35 into San Antonio. I looked on yelp for auto options in the area and saw all of the five star review here. I limped my car over to the shop and everything worked out great! The guy in front of me asked if I had been there before. He spent five minutes explaining why this was his favorite mechanic ever. I understand why. He listed about two paragraphs worth of AC and battery issues with his minivan. The owner listened to him for a minute and asked a couple questions. He pulled out a simple part (Fuse or similar) and had the guy back on the road in five minutes. I had a great experience. I was back on the road in no time. I found Foreign affair using Google search, and after talking with Mr. Bob Mackie and hearing about his experience in fixing foreign cars (plus reading the reviews) I decided to have my 1986 Alfa Romeo towed to his shop. After it arrived we had a brief conversation over the phone where I told him my desire was to get the car running in preparation for sale. After a week of not hearing from him I called and he explained to me that my vehicle was not a priority and he was working on it during his down periods. Approximately a week later I was informed by him my vehicle was ready, however as I attempted to drive away, it stalled prior to exiting the parking lot. He put it on the lift and concluded the fuel line was crimped and all would be fine once I changed the hose (he didn't have any in the shop). After changing the hose the car still didn't run properly, I called Mr. Mackie back and he said "the fuel tank is probably dirty". I cleaned it, the vehicle still would not run for more than 15 minutes. I called Mr. Mackie again and this time he advised me to conduct some additional troubleshooting on the injector system. At this point I reminded him he was paid to repair the car, and his "repairs" were clearly not effective. He responded "my job was to make the car run" to which I responded "it does not run reliably" to which he responded (and I direct quote) "YOU DID NOT SPECIFY YOU WANTED IT TO RUN RELIABLY". After a few minutes of useless conversation he offered to try to fix it again or refund my money; I took the second option. I believe his unprovoked offer of repayment came from the realization of the negative impact his statement would have had if taken to court (which was my next move). Bottom line; DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR TO FOREIGN AFFAIR. read more

Great people! We have been there multiple times. It all started a few years ago when we took our van there after the transmission went out not once... or twice...but for the third time! Two other shops said they fixed it. They gave us a much lower cost and a much longer guarantee. We thought it over and felt it was better just to start over. Foreign Affairs said that was fine and put it all back together. There was no charge! We know they put lots of time into the diagnosis so we were grateful. My MINI Cooper needed the driver's side door repaired. The dealer wanted $500+ to repair but Foreign Affair would be about $300+ to repair. Savings of about $200 so I agreed to take my car in. Also, since the car was going in I decided to have some other maintenance done as well. One other thing, this shop is not convenient for me but since $200 is $200 I decided to take the car in. So I left the car Sunday night so they could have it all day Monday for the repairs. Olga called me Monday afternoon to tell me my car was ready. Not just once but twice to make sure I got the message. Nice. I went to pick up my car and found that they did NOT make the driver door repairs because it was too much work and wouldn't be covered by the standard shop rates (in other words, they'd lose money on this particular job)!! I told the guy that's why I brought the car to him instead of doing the work myself - because the job looked like a pain in the butt and I would rather pay a pro to do this than deal with the frustration of doing it myself. So, not only did they NOT do what they were supposed to but they didn't tell me until I picked up my car. Had we discussed this on the phone I probably would have left the car for another day and agreed to pay an extra cost (as long as it was still less expensive than the dealer). I'm supremely irritated because of the way they handled this whole incident. Once they discovered the situation with the door repair they should have called me and we could have either worked out a deal for them to fix the car or I could have picked my car up and moved on. Instead, they painted me into a corner with no options. One other thing that ticked me off: they clearly did not want to do the work because they offered to give me the name of another repair shop that could do the work. No thank you. I'll pay thru the nose and have the dealer take care of it. AND they have a shuttle so I don't have to arrange for rides to take me across town. read more

Been using their services since moving to Schertz in November, this being my 2nd review. They have worked on both my 2001 Audi A6 and my 2003 VW Passat. They are by far the most honest people/mechanics I have met over the years. I just had the clutch replaced on the VW and paid considerably less than I was expecting and have paid for on other vehicles. I left the car there while on vacation for 7 days and knew that I would NOT be getting the standard "hey we found this and it will cost $500 more" phone call. Took my car in and thought there was a major problem after reviewing on the internet. The mechanic came out and we talked about what i thought was the problem and he put the car on the lift. This wasn't the typical dude with an ASE prefab dealership stitched shirts A few minutes later he asked me back and we checked out the car and he and another tech pin pointed the problems i was having. After review of all the issues, the drive shaft needed replacement and I agreed on the replacement. I got a call later in the day about parts and cost and gave the go ahead. Mac and Olga are the owners of the best foreign car repair shop in this area. I have a Citroen 2CV, a rare car in the US and even rarer in Texas. When it arrived from Europe, it had several mechanical issues. Mac took in my car, the manual and fixed them all. I went from a very expensive paperweight to a fun car in a couple of days. He is straight-up honest. I take my Pontiac Vibe in for service because it is just a costumed toyota. I was sold on his talents when I saw him working of a couple of ancient MGs. After reading the first review and seeing how the person working there was a certified Toyota Master tech, I decided to give them a try. When I took my FJ Cruiser to have the rear coils/struts installed, Bob informed me I was missing some parts. However, he was able to find replacement parts and was able to get the items installed. Everything turned out great, and he was honest with me upfront without charging me an arm and a leg for a good install.
