It took me a couple times visiting Forest to figure out why none of our experiences stuck out as exceptional...and I think I finally pinpointed it. While there is nothing glaringly wrong, they miss on the fine print. Food is good, although the menu descriptions are annoyingly vague and the servers try to do their best to help, but we found them running off before we could finish our order (on several different visits so it appears they could benefit from more staff). There was a long wait for drinks, but the busser was trying to clear plates before we were finished. Onion soup has good flavor, but is missing a cheesy crouton. No complaints about the duck confit. The black rice sounded like it should have been some sort of sushi roll from the menu, but was surprisingly a nice rice cake topped with three slices of raw cobia. The short rib is definitely more meat than pasta. The flavors are well balanced. The salmon had a nice char, but was cooked to perfection. read more

Went there for Mother's Day Brunch. It was a fixed menu with 3 courses and 4 choices for the first two. All very good with excellent service. My 8 y/o did not like the french toast, although I loved it, and they quickly brought a replacement of buttered noodles. All happy and will come back for Dinner for two next time. read more

How have I not written a review for this restaurant yet! This place gets 5 stars. Who would think such a wonderful place is located right here in Michigan and so close to me. This place is comparable to big city fine dining. Went here last night. I have been here about 4 times now, and of course am never disappointed. Last night was especially good. I started off with the BABY HEIRLOOM BEET SALAD. Great appetizer salad and if you ever need modifications the chefs will work with you. But, the best part of my meal was the main course. I ordered CONFIT OF LAMB SHOULDER with Tomato Petals, Cippolini Onions, Olive Tapenade, Merguez Sausage. Oh my word, I seriously can not get this dish off my mind and is really why I have drawn inspiration to write this review. There are no words to describe how well the pairing of this dish was. The most interesting flavors that came together like nothing I can explain. The lamb was the best I have ever had, seriously. So far out of all the dishes I have tried here this is my favorite. The sasuage was so different which in and of it self had a taste all of its own that was fabulous! For dessert I had the HUMMINGBIRD CAKE with Mascarpone Ice Cream, Carmelized Bananas and Salted Caramel Sauce. I enjoyed the dessert. It seemed light and I could still finish it all. My only complaint was the cappuccino. I ordered a decaffeinated Cappuccino because I am pregnant and the espresso tasted burnt and not high quality at all. This might be because I ordered decaf and they just used regular beans or something but I would think a restaurant like this would have a quality bean here. I drink very good coffee on a daily basis so I am a snob on this one. It still does not sway my decision from the 5 star rating. Other things I like about this place..... I love the ambiance here. I always feel very comfortable and something about it gives way to great conversation. The surrounding area is nice and you can go on a walk in a charming area afterwards, which I usually love to do. We went there with fairly high expectations and it pretty much met them. One thing we didn't expect was the pricey menu. I have to say it was overpriced for the food they're serving. I did love the atmosphere. Very open, but still felt like we had privacy at our table. The clientele is a bit on the older side, hence the pricey menu. We didn't hit the bar, which looked a little small, but very inviting. We decided to split everything, which tends to annoy a few servers, but our server seemed to be okay with it after a while. We had the Duck Confit which my boyfriend loved. I'm not a big fan of duck and it was pretty darn good. The beet salad and the spring mix salad were both very yummy and we also had the crab cake which was delicious. If the prices weren't so high we would definitely become regulars. read more

Went to dinner last night. Have mixed reviews. My husband and I were ordering drinks at the bar and a server came over as we were talking to the bartender and interupted our conversation and kind of demanded the bartender to give these 2 woman sitting next to us menus. Never once did he stop to see if the bartender was busy, bless the bartender, she never lost focus of what she was doing first and formost, I comend her for her ability to ignore the rude server. Food, I enjoyed what I had, the Paella...loved it! My husband got the steak...not so much. It did not look or taste like the rest of the food at the Forrest Grill. Maybe they should stick to the more complicated dishes and leave the steaks to the Steak Houses. read more

Wow this experience was so great. Probably the best meal I had in metro Detroit since I moved here. We share a few plates for appetizer. Duck confit, feta Brussel sprouts salade and squid ink cappelini. It was to die for. The for the meal we had the chef special. Suckling pork rack. So tender. I had dinner here on Friday with a friend. We had heard good things and figured we would give it a try. We were delighted to hear that the restaurant offers a tasting menu and after hearing all the options, decided we had to do the tasting. The food was amazing. Everything was extremely fresh, flavorful and presented perfectly. I am from New York City and felt like I was at a 5-star restaurant back home. The chef, servers and sommelier were all attentive, knowledgeable and kind. We had a zucchini dish for our first course and I was impressed by how much flavor the chef was able to coax out of the vegetables. The next course was a delicious peach gazpacho. I expected this to be sweet but it was a perfect balance of sweet and savory. The third dish was a cauliflower ravioli that was DIVINE. I wished I had more of that dish. The fourth course was a taste of the steak offered on the menu and was also extremely good. Lastly, we had a beautiful coconut dish. I normally only like chocolate desserts but really loved all the flavors of the dessert offered. The tasting menu is absolutely worth trying - the chef said they change it daily. My only slight drawback is that I thought the portions were a bit small, even for a tasting menu. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a spectacular meal and to celebrate a special occasion. I will absolutely be going back. read more

I was so excited to visit Forest Grill as part of Birmingham's "Restaurant Week", because of its many accolades, including Hour Magazine's "2010 Restaurant of the Year.' The decor is chicly streamlined and the service excellent. But after dining, I departed thoroughly disappointed. Even with its $15 daily lunch deal, I found Forest Grill to be overhyped and overpriced. The opener, Tomato Bisque En Croute was the shining star. The soup had a nice smokey flavor along with the tomato and the pastry was buttery and delightful. But it was downhill from then on. I had the Vegetarian Parisian Gnocchi, a poor version of what you can get at any locally-owned Italian restaurant. You want pillowy puffs of this potato pasta. FG's was mushy. The portion was small. But with its unappealing flavor, I could barely eat what they served me. My lunch companion found her Chicken Paillard to be better, but uneventful. For desert, I had the bread pudding, which surprisingly gets raves by some reviewers. They obviously have never eaten in the South, where nearly any restaurant serves a tastier and more multi-flavored recipe. The whole experience had me mourning the passing of "Five Lakes Grill" and "Tribute". Now those were restaurants worthy of the price. And the final notch on this negative review. Went to Forest Grill for my wife's birthday after hearing so much about it. We ordered the charcuterie and loved it. By far the best part of the meal. Wine list was extensive and exciting, although the server brought my wife the wrong wine initially. The risotto's flavor was excellent, but arrived lukewarm and a bit crunchy for my taste. My wife had the scallops and pork belly - very good, but nothing inspiring. I ordered the veal cheek and thought the harvesty flavors of cinnamon/cardamom were a little overpowering for a 94 degree summer day. Could barely taste the veal. More surprised it was on the summer menu than anything. Overall, I categorize this restaurant as a great place for a drink, appetizer, and dessert. I didn't think the restaurant lived up to its reputation nor provide anywhere near the value for the price they charged. It was delicious and interesting- everything I expected. On our plate we enjoyed some cured pork belly, some pork loin, a terrine, a tuna tartar, a beet salad, a celery root tarragon salad and some arugula. Well, the pork was tremendous. Interesting and delicious. The terrine dominated the plate in terms of flavor. It was a soft, sweet, garlic flavor reminiscent of a kielbasi but far more delicate.The beets were great. The tarragon celery salad was just fine, but mostly served as a pallet cleanser and the arugula was peppery and delicious. The tuna tartar was not spectacular. It was a tartar with flat leaf parsley, olive oil and some lemon. It was balanced very nicely, but it was not spectacular. But frankly- we didn't come for the tuna. After the charcuterie plate, we ordered some wine and then the prosciutto pizza. The pizza was basically a flat bread covered after baking with arugula, large asiago shavings, truffle oil and some thin sliced mild prosciutto. It was ok. The truffle oil dominated the flavor and we ended up breaking the pizza down to its components to enjoy it. This is not strong indictment- it was enjoyable. I look forward to going back when my wallet is heavier and I can enjoy more of the menu. The wait staff was top drawer. We started with an excellent hostess who directed us to a fabulous bar at which a very good bartender made some fantastic martinis. After being seated at a table, our waitress Lindsey was knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. It is always a pleasure to have a server who is an expert and can guide you towards good decisions. As someone who rarely takes the time to write a Yelp review, I felt that I owed it to the Forest Grill to take a few minutes to reflect on my wonderful experience there. Meals at the Forest Grill are an unforgettable trifecta of remarkable food, service and ambiance, which is why my husband and I were thrilled when the Forest Grill offered their restaurant--with unparalleled warmth and hospitality, no less--for our wedding luncheon last fall. The food was delicious, and nearly every guest at the reception told me that it was one of the best meals he/she had ever had. Chef David is a rock star: he was recently nominated for a James Beard award, and has extensive training in some of the best restaurants in France--and it shows. Monica, his wife and manager, was a pleasure to work with in planning our event. She was extremely patient and attentive to our every need. The Forest Grill has helped us to celebrate many special, and not-so-special occasions, and I look forward to many more in the future! Wine selection was pretty expansive which I liked and sampled. ;) However, we had a nagging fruit fly by our table and our steak knive were not sharp. Our octopus app (both meat and the fennel) was very much blackened to the point where it tasted more like the inside of my grill and less like octopus... my husband's fish (Bronzino) had some serious char too. The redeemer was the short rib entree. Tender and wrapped in pasta/butternut squash puree. The duck egg app was pretty good too...however some of the other apps looked like pretty odd flavor profiles. This place was lack luster for me. The menu is an underwhelming mix of mushy grains, pork, and cold cuts. Our hostess asked us 3 times if we were a party of two. Our server was slow, disinterested, and not engaged. We had to ask her the specials which were simply a collage of menu items. (How unoriginal) the exposed kitchen is a bit like the food court at the mall. On a positive note, the low lit ambiance and jazz music was nice. Just OK. We had a reservation for my wife's birthday (6:30) and we got there at 6:15. Our table wasn't ready so we sat at the bar for a drink. 7:00 rolled around and the table still wasn't ready. We were starving so decided to eat at the bar. Everyone was very apologetic and the manager bought us an appetizer and some drinks which was nice. The food was pretty underwelming to be honest. I ordered a medium rare steak and it came out medium well and really dry....I didn't finish it. My wife got the branzino and it was pretty bland...like SUPER bland....nothing special. The farm egg was delicious and creamy, and the three pasta dishes we shared were all excellent. If you had to just pick one, go for the potato gnocchi with charred octopus. Let me start by saying that myself and the party I was with are in no way afraid to spend money for quality. Each of us has recently spent over $100 per person out for dinner, without issue. However, as I think most people would agree, with that price tag comes an expectation of quality of food, presentation, and of course excellent service. With that said, my business partner and I wanted to treat our staff to a very nice evening out for the holiday. We wanted to have fun, dress up a bit, and just relax with some great food. We researched a lot of options before choosing to give Forest Grill a try. The reviews had been good since the re-opening, so all in all it looked like a great choice for us. We made reservations for 7pm on a Wednesday evening, with plans to arrive around 6:30 for a few cocktails before hand. Upon arriving, we were pleased to see that our area was already prepared and ready for us, so we decided to skip the bar area and sit down and enjoy drinks from there. The decor is very trendy and modern, and everyone seemed to like how it all was put together. After sitting down, we all ordered drinks. There was an initial delay, but we were early, so we didnt give it much thought. Unfortunately, this was not a blip in service, this was reflective of our entire night. Our waitress, from the very beginning, appeared to have an attitude with us. Upon asking us if we were ready to order - we asked her about any specials. She seemed annoyed that we would ask, and responded with an annoyed tone that "everything on the menu is special".. OK THEN. No biggie in itself, but her service continued to be poor, despite the restaurant not being overly busy. Everyone ordered their food, beginning with a few appetizers. I will get to the food in a moment, but over the course of three plus hours, we had to ask for, and wave down our waitress multiple times to get additional drinks. This got to be annoying after awhile as multiple people found themselves waiting extended periods of time without drinks. Onto the food. The appetizers in general were very good. Everyone seemed pleased, and as others have mentioned in reviews, the Farm Egg was especially unique and delicious. Scallops were prepared properly and the brussel sprouts, while prepared in an interesting way, were also very tasty. The main courses I would say were a step down from the appetizers. Not to say anything was bad, because it wasn't. The duck was prepared very well, steaks cooked nicely, lamb shank and fish were good, but nothing was amazing. And not just to me, but to everyone in our group. All of us were excited to try Forest Grill. And while everything was good, to have very poor service combined with the food being very good in some cases, and just ok in others, along with an expensive price tag, it is hard to recommend them or to want to go back. As with anything, maybe we just got the perfect storm of a bad night for them, but when you average around $150 per person - you expect to never have a bad night or service. Having not gone out to dinner in a long time I was pleased to Brian Polcyn had opened Forest Grill. I'm a big fan of his cooking from Pike Street, to Chiamyo, Arcadia, to wine tastings at Five Lakes Grill. My wife and I got there early in anticipation great meal only to be disappointed. Were informed at the bar that they were out belvedere vodka, also Stoli as we enjoyed a crab appetizer at the bar that was very good. We were seated on time for our reservation and ordered wine and dinner. The tomato bisque was fantastic but was warm at best. My wife ordered Cote Du Boeuf with a wild mushroom ragout with crispy brussels sprouts the beef was very plain and good luck finding a scant mushroom in the ragout. I had the Indiana Duck that was warm like it had been sitting under the heat lamps. In closing the only thing that saved the evening was Katie she was fantastic. read more

Last night we had the pleasure of dining at the Forest, I had the Lamb Shank and my guest ordered the Short Rib pasta, both meals were delicious, the favor was outstanding. We also enjoyed a Caesar salad that had just the right amount of a great dressing with torn leaves. This was topped off with Baked Alaska, delicious!!!!! Our waitress was Katrina, a kind gentle sophicated women that always seems to know what we wanted or needed without asking. The new decor was elegant with a clean soft comfort level. Had my first experience with Forest Grill on NYE. Have been wanting to try it out since it opened and I was not disappointed. A very great meal was had by my wife and me! One thing though: Are there always so many blatantly and flagrantly rude people dinning here? I understand the locale and the price point may bring in some houty touty people but these people were straight up hustling the chef! Sitting somewhat close to each of these situations I could not believe it! You know damn well what you are going to get at this restaurant, don't ask for chicken stir fry. And yes you may have to sit near a door. Don't ask "to make it better" from the executive chef that you just stupidly asked if he was "part of the kitchen staff". How embarrassing!!! The food was amazing. I highly recommend the charcuterie platter. An exceptional value for two people. The boulibasse was great and my trout was cooked perfectly! The server at the beginning of the meal after asking us if it was our first time dinning did go into a lengthy explanation of the menu and went on for quite a bit on a special menu they had for the night that per person was what I was expecting to pay for two people...a little out of our price range but looked wonderful! read more

This is one of the most beautiful modern restaurants i have ever been in. Lots of windows--an attractive place. The menu is large, with incredible choices. I had the risotto appetizer which was incredible. Even if you don't think you like sweetbreads, try this. My duck entree was also incredible, however the sausage that accompanied it was slightly cold in the middle. The duck more than made up for that though. Dessert for me was dull: a chocolate torte, that I am sad to say tasted quite ordinary. My guest was also generally pleased with his meal. He had the yellow fin tuna appetizer--spectacular work of art--and the Dover sole entree. His main gripe was the piece of sole was smallish. But it was beautiful to look at. His dessert was also spectacular, a trio of custards, each in its own egg shell. It was perhaps slightly over the top, but still delightful to see. The service was impeccable, as you would expect for these prices. And lets be frank about the prices. First off: I am not cheap when it comes to fine dining. So going in I knew I was going to be shelling out some dough. Further, I did not find the entree prices outrageous, ranging from about $22 to $35. However, I did think the prices for the more exciting appetizers ($17-$20) was steep. I know this is the trend in appetizers and perhaps recognizes that some people order them for entrees. My bigger bitch relates to a martini, that I didn't even drink. My guest asked for a martini with Valentine vodka. However, as they do not serve Valentine (boo), he asked for the house vodka. This turned out to be Ketel one and $17 a drink. One, I think that is too much money for a house vodka and second its too much money for Ketel. Here is another small, petty, catty point. I detest it when the chef comes out to go around to the tables and he isn't democratic in his small talk. The chef came into the dining room twice to talk to people. I was close enough to hear that he didn't know the people at least at one of these tables. Did he stop at anyone else's table? No. Did he even nod to us? No. Let me add that the joint was not crowded at the time--maybe 5 full tables. Did I want to talk to him? No, what the hell am I going to say? But no one likes to be ignored. read more

We came to Forest for dinner on a trip to visit colleges around the Detroit area. The restaurant was very modern and fresh feeling with an active bar area. My son and I ate in the bar area, and enjoyed the setting. Our waitress was nice, and the service was good. They offer craft cocktails, but I ordered a cosmo, which was excellent. My son had a filet mignon with steak fries. The steak was perfect. The fries were enormous, and although tasty, they were so filled with oil that we both felt a little sock after eating one. I had a brussel sprouts salad with dates and goat cheese. it was very good, but again, on the rich side--and would have been better with more brussel and less of the other things in it. I was told they are known for their whole fish branzino, so I had that for my main course, it was okay, but not the best I've ever had. I also had the baked Alaska for dessert. The merengue looked perfect, but was too eggie and loose under the browned top. Overall, I still like this restaurant a lot, and would definitely come back--I would just order some different things. read more

One of the greatest, if not the best restaurant in MetroDetroit. They have always something that will surprise you. From the starters to desserts all the food has tones of flavors and is delicate and perfectly cooked. We started this time with the scallop with fave beans that were outstanding (as always perfectly cooked). Black rice and the goat cheese rotolo where the second dishes we had and we loved it both of them with different textures and great flavor. Finally we shared the branzino and we just loved. Again, with dessert and final expresso a great experience and service. I want to mention that the Spicy Margarita drink was also one of the kings of the night. read more

The self proclaimed Sausage King of Detroit, Brian Polcyn, settles in as executive chef, bringing with him an adoration of charcuterie in a fine dining setting. With a sausage grinder as the main star of the show, and a small open kitchen with a clay oven, the exquisitely plated dishes arrive full of tastes, textures and tantalizing touches, such as the spinach paste painted on the beet salad plate, framing the goat cheese and field greens, delicately dressed. As it was a cold rainy day, the French onion soup was absolutely a must. With it's cognac notes, this crock of love stands out as a must order. Last but not least, the Boudin Blanc, a soft pork sausage with frisee salad and caramelized onions was, for a non - sausage lover, just okay. With the merguez 86'd for the day, it was the only other charcuterie option available. We had 6:15 reservations and are still waiting for food at 8:00 PM. We were offered 'sorbet' as a palate cleanser and apology for the wait.
