Best thing about road trips is discovering new eating spots. That was the case of Fork and Spoon. As we were heading back home, we decided on a last stop to dine before leaving and found this great place. I don't know if this place is a chain or not, but I'd never heard of it and was pretty impressed with the huge menu. I also liked that they offered both breakfast, as well as, lunch and dinner. Prices were very affordable and food was tasty. I ordered the Oma's plate, which consists of two eggs done to taste, country fried potatoes and a crepe. Honestly, that crepe was the selling point for me. I mean, how many places serve crepes as a meal side. It was the perfect meal with savory and sweet. My mom ordered the German Hotdog - a bratwurst on a hoagie with sauerkraut, and also, ordered some of their Bavarian potato salad. She didn't like the salad, but I thought was pretty good. All in all, it was an excellent food experience and we decided that we were certainly going back. read more

My mom and I tried this place the other day for a late breakfast. I could tell when we walked in that this place was going to be good because it was PACKED. It was small and fairly intimate, but still somehow managed to offer a good amount of seating and is decorated with rustic, southern flair. Mom had the pan crepes and a hot vanilla latte, both of which she said were very good. I tried the French toast and an iced lavender latte, and I was very pleasantly surprised by how good the coffee was. The French toast was good, but maybe not "the best in Texas" as advertised. They have an extensive breakfast/brunch/lunch menu, so there are plenty of other options to try out in the future. The staff were all very friendly and our server was very sweet and attentive. Prices were about what I would expect from a place like this, sort of moderate-high, but for the amount of food we received and the fact that it was all very good, combined with the ambiance, I think it was worth it. Looking through my Yelp! reviews, it came as a surprise to me that I have not posted anything about Fork and Spoon. This comes as a surprise to me, as Fork and Spoon is truly a treasure to New Braunfels. If you do not believe me, just roll into town, find a New Braunfels resident and ask them where to go for breakfast. I guarantee you any one of us will mention Fork and Spoon in our list of recommendations. I would bet a paycheck on this. Also worth mentioning, if you want to pick a New Braunfelan out of a crowd, you can ask the same question, and if they do not mention Fork and Spoon, you have found yourself a tourist. This place is mainly known for breakfast, but they do offer lunch. Their lunch menu does have German dishes on it, but full disclosure, I have never been here for lunch. I would venture to guess if they rock lunch like they rock their breakfast, I am sure lunch is great. I have had a few of their breakfast items on many visits. Opa's plate, the Monte Cristo Toast, and their French Toast. This place has the best French toast in town. Fork and Spoon uses a homemade Challah bread, topped with powdered sugar and honey pecan butter. If you like French toast, I highly encourage you to order it. I am convinced if heaven has French toast when I get there, that it will taste exactly like this French toast. The Challah bread is excellent, and the pecan butter puts it over the top. I will say if you are a lightweight, or are not very hungry, get the half order, as the full order is a lot. The Monte Cristo Toast also is very good. Their twist on the classic Monte Cristo is excellent, as they use a French toast approach. It is a sweet and savory dish with the savory taste of ham and Swiss cheese, combined with the sweetness of French toast. I highly recommend Fork and Spoon. Strong suggestion though - try to get there early. It fills up fast, and wait times can easily approach 30 minutes and easily encroach into the hour mark. Enjoy. read more

Pros: - The food was good. The french toast was perfectly moist and had a melt-in-your-mouth flavoring. The eggs were fluffy and the bacon was crisp on the edges, while being soft towards the center without the edges being burnt. - They use nice/premium to-go containers, which are plastic vs. styrofoam and arguably more sustainable due to their ability to be re-used. - Food wait times were much more accurate than seating wait times. It seems like they over-quote seating wait times, which I guess it's better to over-estimate than under, but see point #1 under cons. Cons: - This place has obviously overgrown this location and it's leading to a pretty bad customer experience because they stay on a wait (minimum wait time I heard quoted was 30 minutes, extending up to 60 -- we were quoted 45-60 minutes initially). When you have available space in the shopping center, the owners should be considering moving to an appropriately-sized space as you can't truly measure how much business you're losing walking people who can't/don't want to wait. For reference, we were attending a movie nearby and couldn't wait but decided to eat our meal in the lobby/waiting area. It was colder this day, so the inside waiting space was overly packed and the people who chose to wait but couldn't find seating indoors, unfortunately had to wait outdoors. Even the bar only had a single seat. - There's no combo with a french toast, eggs and bacon. That seems like a pretty basic breakfast combo. Yet there IS one for pancakes (the Fork and Spoon Plate for $12.49). That mean's you'll spend $14.49 to make the Oma Plate (1/2 french toast, eggs and potatoes) similar to this basic combo. Because of this, I did a 1/2 order of french toast, bacon and eggs (see next point). - Everything is charged A LA CARTE. So that $14.49 for the Oma plate just referenced is before a $1.00 surcharge ($0.50 per egg) and before adding $1.50 per slice bacon (subtotal $18.49). Because of the way the menu is laid out and the fact that I didn't want potatoes, everything al a carte was $1.50 per slice of bacon (x2 slices), $2.50 per egg (x2 eggs) and $6.39 for 1/2 french toast, which is one slice. Subtotal $14.39. - Employees don't know the menu. Asking about substitutions, etc. the employee was unsure about a lot. She essentially had to try to ring it up to tell us if combinations were possible and/or the cost which reveals that this a la carte setup is just as counter-intuitive for employees as it is customers. When the tap-to-pay wasn't working, the employee was also unaware that the handheld pay terminal had a slot for chip-based pay. - The employee helping us also didn't mention the rewards program, which has a 10 point bonus + your tab subtotal (1 point per $1) just for signing up. The rewards program scale is also severely slanted. You have to spend $100 to get $5 off, which is not that rewarding TBH. read more

This breakfast & lunch place is one of New Braunfels treasures and one of my top favorites. It has a generic American name but with German featured dishes and influences. I can rarely say this about any restaurant but everything I've tried has been delicious!: Their Mediterranean Skillet or bowl, the quiche of the day with a delicious spinach salad topped with their homemade poppy seed dressing, their most-delicious pancakes, French toast made with their in-house baked bread topped with creamy butter, sausage grits, side of broccoli with its perfect tenderness and flavor, their home fried potatoes -mmmmm, outstandingly grilled salmon (not fishy tasting) salad but I prefer the poppy seed dressing over their pesto (tastes like wheat grass to me) and feta over the parmesan. My only disappointment is that they close at 3:00 everyday. So I can only dine here on Saturdays and maybe a Sunday after church. I can always go the takeout route for lunch during the week if I needed to, but don't care for styrofoam containers. I've never had an issue with the service except over-the-phone. Their food is not overpriced. It is very reasonably priced with quality ingredients. This place gets crazy crowded during the Saturday breakfast rush so there is often an hour wait. I have been going here mostly for breakfast for 15 years, French toast is to die for, it is out of this world great. Big chunks of fresh made special German bread, made in there kitchen. I was back at Fork and Spoon after being there earlier this week. Today I had the Salmon Salad with Pesto Dressing. I love this salad. Fresh, crispy lettuce, green beans (Al dente), potatoes (asked for them to not be fried because of ww), grape tomatoes, hard boiled egg, salmon and pesto on the side. The pesto is amazing!! I am/was a regular and very good tipping customer. I was meeting a friend for brunch. I was 10 minutes early. They have a policy and don't seat incomplete parties. This is a scratch kitchen priding itself on their breakfast offerings; everything is made fresh and farm-to-table. The prices are extremely reasonable and the portion sizes are good. Single location (read: not a chain) so you'll have to go here to experience it... AND for this reason it's generally pretty packed on the weekend, having been here two weekends in a row. Not to mention, all of the aforementioned, the food is simply incredible. From their house bbq sauce to their biscuits and gravy, I also sampled the chicken and waffles. Again, great portion size and the breading they used was equal parts crispy, crunchy, flaky and the chicken itself was tender and delicious. First and probably last time going here. The food was ok but the service was what was not great. After a 25 minute wait (which was expected), 4 of us ordered breakfast food. My daughter and I ordered coffee and water, my son ordered a soda, my bf ordered an orange juice and water. Only 1 water came. Not a big deal, but we attempted to flag people down at least 4 times and the staff walked completely and directly by us without even acknowledging the polite hand up and the "excuse me". You shouldn't have to repeatedly try to flag somebody down to get something you ordered in the first place. We also wanted a soda refill and waited til we were almost done to get that, because our server did not check back or have his eye on our drinks at all. We were never offered warm ups on our coffee, which I've thought is kind of standard for a breakfast place. Our breakfast was $100 for 4 of us. I'm highly disappointed in the service received at this New Braunfels restaurant. It's been there for a long time, but the hostess and another staff member could use a class in politeness and customer service. I was meeting a family member and I arrived first. I walked in to 2 people waiting to seat people and a lot of empty tables. When asked how many in my party, I said 2 to which the woman replied "we will need to wait for the other guest to arrive" Then I said I would just take a table for one, and she openly huffed at me. She grabbed a single menu, a single set of silverware and took me to a table. I understand policy when it's bust, or there are people waiting, but this was not the case at this time. My family and I had read the reviews and we were we definitely need to go check this place out. I will say when we arrived it was very unassuming but people were waiting outside to get sat so we were like it must be good. We went in to put our place down and we had a party of 6. I will say the hostess looked annoyed we had that many people and she advised us it could be longer than usual because they wouldn't be able to give us an estimate of how long it will be for such a large party. I seemed it was a bit strange but I got her begrudgingly say 20 minutes. The entire waitlist seemed a bit overwhelming for her and I was now praying that this was not an indication of the food. It took us about 25 minutes after I offered to sit in a booth since I had a 6 yr old and a toddler who would need a high chair they seemed more accommodating to find us something. Once we finally got sat I will say our server was the best. She was very attentive and suggested some meals due to it being our first time there. I will say the food was worth the wait. I always choose the chicken fried steak breakfast and it was delicious and the biscuits were beyond fluffy. My daughter had chocolate chip pancakes and the wife a spinach omelette and they were both delicious. The food was worth the wait. I don't know if it was worth the frustration of getting sat. I will recommend this spot due to the food and the friendly service. I just hope they have gotten a better way to do a waitlist or at least someone who doesn't overwhelm so easily. read more

I have to comment that the service by the waitress was formidable, but I must mention that the gentleman who was walking the tables and restocking the salt and pepper jars, showed a total lack of pleasure, with a sharp look of another evil work day, but luckily it was not my waiter.
