We each had the strawberry champagne margarita and it was so delicious, not over sweet, a packed a punch! We intended to have 2 each but had to stick with one in order to function afterwards. I had the CFC Biscuit Benedict and you can customize it with spicy chicken or hot honey. I got the hot honey and it was perfect! It was so delicious I don't leave a morsel behind. My friend and I shared the salted caramel brownie for my birthday, and that was also delicious. I can't wait to come back here and this says a lot since I'm not big of fried chicken. I have been to this restaurant several times before and it has always been one of my favorites. The drinks were amazing and the food was consistently great. Last night I finally brought my husband to try it after hyping it up for so long, and unfortunately it was a huge disappointment. Things have definitely changed. I was really looking forward to the chicken fried chicken, only to find out they were completely out of mashed potatoes. For a place known for chicken, that was surprising. So I ended up just sharing some of my husband's meal and our appetizer. The cornbread has always been something I rave about, especially with their hot honey. This time it came out dry, and the hot honey had no heat at all. It just was not the same. My husband's fried chicken was honestly the worst part. It was burnt, with a layer of black under the breading, and tasted like it had been overcooked to the point of being charred. There is no way the kitchen did not see how dark it was before serving it. That said, his sides were still great, so at least part of the meal was enjoyable. Our friend's chicken sandwich was not terrible, but it did not taste fresh like it used to. It felt more like something frozen and heavily breaded instead of the quality we had experienced before. One positive was the service. Our server was wonderful, and the rest of the staff was kind and attentive as well. I accidentally spilled my drink right after it arrived, and they were quick and gracious to replace it even though it was completely my fault. That was very much appreciated. The other issue that really took away from the experience was the atmosphere. Halfway through our meal, a large group of adults sat in the courtyard and had their children sit separately at a table right next to us, while their parents remained in another section of the patio. The kids were clearly having fun and playing games, which is great, but they were also very loud and screaming just a foot away from our table while their parents enjoyed quiet drinks elsewhere. There were completely open sections of the patio farther away where they could have sat, so it was frustrating that they were placed right next to the only other table of adults trying to enjoy a night out. It ended up being very disruptive and took away from what we had hoped would be a relaxing evening. Overall, I was really disappointed. This used to be a place I highly recommended, but after this visit it feels like the quality and attention to detail have slipped. The new manager Chris has really done so well since coming on board. He brings so much energy back into the restaurant, he's friendly, and makes you feel like family. We are obviously regulars at this restaurant. There is a lady named Michelle, she is a server now, but used to be a manager. She is terrible! She is condescending, and basically says,"F*** you with a smile. One thing that we aren't big fans of is the way they charge $1.50 extra for sauce. We spend almost $100 every time we come to birdhouse, and to be charge $1.50 per sauce seems a little over the top. Especially, if you are asking for no sauce on the sandwich. I haven't been there more than once but will probably stop back by. The hostess seemed busy and there was no greeting or warmth upon arriving. However, once inside. Everyone was super warm and nice. First impressions though are always of the first person you encounter. Parking was a bit of a beast which I never love at restaurants. Now to the food. I am not a fan of any of their salad dressings but I did love their hot honey and their cornbread was some of the best I ever had. The chicken was great. No complaints there. The biscuits were okay, I think they could have been softer but not sure when they were made. I also don't love deviled eggs but I really liked theirs. Again, some of the best I have had. We made reservations here for Mother's Day about a week in advance (over the phone, they do have it online as well) which I was so grateful for because Gruene doesn't have many restaurants and they don't all accept reservations. Major points to birdhouse ! We were seated right away - and even early! Our waitress was quick and attentive with our large party (I only wish I knew her name!) We had a few appetizers- *queso fries : unfortunately, very little to no queso on these so we had to ask for a side of queso to put on top. The queso was amazing. the fries really needed more of it and they were delish. *poblano corn fritters : omg, the hot honey that comes with this for dipping I REPEAT do not skip this! In fact go ahead and drizzle it alllll over them fritters!!! No need for the ranch. They were hot and delicious. Our waitress, Val, went above and beyond for us. We sat outside under the shade of the tree. I ordered a blueberry mint julep. It took a little longer than I expected to come out, but it was made to perfection. We started off with the fried pickles (frickles). They were so tasty. You didn't even need to dip them in ranch or their birdhouse sauce. We had an option of breakfast, sandwiches or salads. I was going to be good and get a salad, but the potatoes from the table next to me called my name. I ended up getting the breakfast sandwich with their breakfast potatoes. The breakfast sandwich was a croissant with egg cheese and bacon. The breakfast potatoes were seasoned and delicious. So worth me getting the breakfast sandwich. The breakfast sandwich was a pretty big portion. It will fill you up. The restaurant is an about one block away from the main Gruene area. It is a perfect location. It's right by the river as well. Visited here weeks ago and LOvED it. When I was asked where do I want to eat, on Sunday, I said Birdhouse, even though it's a bit of a drive. After waiting an hour for a table, we ordered drinks and an app., as soon as it was delivered, a bee or two were hanging around. Not too much long later we ordered lunch, knowing they cook it fresh, we'd have a ~20 minute wait. Well, our waiter came, said sorry for the 45 minute wait. Yup. 45! We were patiently waiting and I apologized to my husband for picking this place. We all know how that goes! He's a good man and stayed quiet. Then I got cold mashed potatoes under my Gringo chicken, that was so fried it had space between the fry and meat. Not to mention my husband's food was cold. He asked to switch his fries for pasta during the order. When it arrive, no pasta, but fries, he mentioned it to the waiter and he went back inside. Finally it arrives as we were "trying" to eat. There were so many a staff issues, we didn't complain as we were trying to "enjoy" my choice and there were bigger issues. BEE! TONS of bees, like a hive of bees on everything. On everyone's food. We had our dog and could not go inside but other families took their food to go and others just left. Te staff were still seating people as the tables were covered, even a family with a baby! Cold food I understand. Bee's coming for honey, I get it, but you should have "smoke" or a plan, something to fix this issue. Like maybe close the outside and offer refund or gift card to those of us who could sit and eat. Literally my dog was attaching them from there being so many. I actually loved this. I've been to a lot places to eat and this in my opinion in Gruene is the best place to eat. I think you're gonna not like this place if you get normal fried chicken. Yes their normal fried chicken is bland. I'd only eat the leg piece if you go normal fried chicken as the breast pieces is way too dry and bland. The main event and why I call it the best is their Nashville hot chicken. In LA I went to a place called Howlin Rays. That's the best in the US. But for Texas I give it to this place. That Nashville hot chicken sandwich was a 1,000,000/10. It was amaaazing. Also the fries are really good here too. Ambiance is cozy and nice with easy parking considering. Also, service was very very good too. Highly recommend we will definitely be back. Oh it is kinda pricey but not bad. Sandwich and most entrees are 16+ bucks. So be prepared for that. read more

I'm gonna need someone to explain the hype, or what went wrong here today, because this was not a good experience whatsoever. First up, the hostess has the personality of a wet blanket, also, who charges $4 for a "cup" of coke with no refills and then proceeds to tell you they are cans after the fact??... next, half the fried chicken at the table was undercooked to the point of salmonella, no one checked in on us the entire time, so my water was empty the entire hour+ we were there. The mash potatoes had maybe a quarter teaspoon worth of gravy, it was actually comical. It's kinda weird they don't have sweet tea or real lemonade tbh. The chicken tastes no better than chicken express (not a compliment) but the cornbread and cream corn were pretty good so I added a star and after the check was dropped off they took 1 of the raw chicken meals off so that's something I guess. read more

She asked to make sure the fries were hot, they were cold. So they remade them, they came out nice and hot. I chose the Gruene Eggs & Bacon Benedict which was applewood smoked bacon, poached egg, jalapeño hollandaise on fried Gruene tomatoes, and roasted breakfast potatoes. When the server place my plate in front of me, his thumb was deeply submerged into the hollandaise sauce up to his knuckle. When our waitress asked me how our food was and I told her about my food, she said oh he's new. Then on top of it, my eggs, and potatoes were ice cold. That experience was awful. Would I return probably not, my food should've been hot and the idea of someone's thumb being in my food was pretty gross. Oh wait, the table next to ours, the man decided to clear his throat and spit it over the rail not once, but twice. read more

While visiting New Braunfels I stopped into the Birdhouse for some dinner after a long road trip. I sat at the bar relatively early...about 6pm. There were a few people in the restaurant and a couple at the bar. I got service quickly...friendly and polite. If I'm being honest...after a little chat and a couple drinks...I was a little disappointed that the bartender seemed slightly inexperienced. He was absolutely great as far as service and he got my few drinks right....but there were a couple minor misses...combined with the chat, it seemed like he was rather newish to the game. Was really looking forward to trying this restaurant out for Sunday brunch, being as it is one of the few places in Gruene that serves a brunch. Upon arrival, the hostess sat us outside, it appeared there were three waitresses outside, and we were sat in a section with just one other table with guests, the rest of the tables were empty. After about 15 minutes, we watched the waitress bring drinks and take the order of the table next to us, without acknowledging that we were there. My husband went up to the hostess and asked if we could please have a server, so we waited another 5 minutes and ended up leaving with not so much as waters being brought to our table. If this is how the service is on a slow Sunday, I'd hate to experience this restaurant at a busy time. I doubt we will return to try again. read more

There are several friendly felines around here as well. I gave a couple a bite and they went and got their friends. So be careful with that.
