Yummy Tomato Sandwich w/Cheese, Meat & Lettuce.

All aboard!! Imagine it is 1950s New Braunfels, before the time of arugula, before dijon mustard, even well before someone added bacon to burgers (A&W 1963). This is that burger. A 1950s burger is a 3 star burger, but that's all an Average Joe ever needed. What gives this another star is Union Station Diners dedication to the American Veteran. The Dude Abides.

We came here in s a arch of a club sandwich. I will say the place is surprisingly small, but we were seated quickly and got our oder in. I went dot midas and my girls desire for a club had us driving all over and ended up here. We were both happy with the food and the service.

This is a great spot that gets busy quickly. There is some parking, but can be difficult to find parking on site with how busy they are. The service is awesome. The staff are so nice and attentive. They really add a warm, friendly atmosphere to the whole experience. The omelettes are huge and delicious. The cinnamon roll is also easily shareable, so soft, and covered in so much good icing! This will definitely be our new go-to spot for breakfast!

The food was good, both my husband and I got ol reliable options. The biscuits were honestly my favorite part of the meal. The coffee really wasn't to my taste, it was really strong despite creamer and sugar being added so I didn't actually drink all of even half of it sadly. Our server was very nice and bubbly, the restaurant itself is small but charming. I've seen it multiple times when I've come to town to float the river so I had really high hopes. Next time I'll forgo coffee and maybe try something more adventurous on the menu.

    Smiling kids pancake

My daughter and I started our "mommy daughter" day here before some shopping and heading to the hair salon. We came at 9:30 on Tuesday and there was a small wait, about 15 min. Everyone was so friendly and kind - from the patrons to the servers. I had the biscuits and sausage gravy with 2 scrambled eggs and my 4 year old had the smiling pancake with bacon. Everything was perfect. It was so cozy and comfortable. I wish we lived closer - we would be here all the time. Low prices too!

Migas with a side of crinkle cut french fries.

I had to wait for a seat. This is a popular place, and with good reason. The food is fantastic! I had migas with a side of french fries to dip into my refied beans. Coffee and service were great. It's a little cramped, but otherwise very nice inside. They hadn't opened the patio yet, but that looked nice as well.

    Tuna melt & fries

There are so few places where you can find a good tuna melt - and this is the best I've had in a long time. It's made with rye bread and plenty of melty cheese. The crinkle fries that come with it are crispy and always hot. My husband had the Hungry Texan - 2 eggs, 3 types of meat, hash browns, a biscuit and 2 pancakes. Both of our lunches were so generous we did not need dinner tonight. Service is good and staff is friendly.

No food leftover for my "leftover art" MP.

Enjoyed our breakfast in this cozy dinner. Best Gluten free pancake and +50 omelettes to choose from. Friendly and fast serving! And my left over art...attached Maria.

I really liked the lamb. Dish. That one wasn't too salty and had a nice flavor. I never was a tenderloin/filet mignon type person. Yeah, it's tender, but lacks the nice beefy flavor, so that might be one of the dishes they could add more salt to or have a strong sauce to go with it. Everyone's tastes differ, but that's based on my personal tastes.

I was a little nervous about making it a luncheon location for my fellow retirees, but one of our group members lives in New Braunfels and said it was a nice place for lunch. She also said it wasn't all that expensive, which had been my main concern since the online menu doesn't list any prices. Anyway, I made a reservation for 12 of us for the last Tuesday in April. Just a few days before, they called to cancel my reservation because they were painting the restaurant. I scrambled and located a new venue for that luncheon, but told my people we would still be going to The Gruene Door, only now it would be for our May luncheon. The restaurant is very nice. The entire place is painted in rich colors. We were at a large table in the middle of a room that had wonderful windows on three sides. The other tables were empty, so it was practically private dining. There were a lot of menu items sampled between our group members. I uncharacteristically took a chance on the meatloaf. Y'all know that I think my wife's is the absolute best version of my meatloaf- my favorite food. Most restaurants disappoint me, even when the meatloaf is pretty good. I will say that the meatloaf served here was very good. I liked the sweet and tangy tomato topping. But, it was nowhere near as good as my wife's. I also must have misread the menu because I was expecting mashed potatoes. The fingerling potatoes were a definite disappointment. There was nothing wrong with them. I just prefer mashed potatoes with meatloaf. The item that stole the show for me was the delicious cheese soup made with boch beer. It was so flavorful and creamy. It didn't have that floury consistency so many cheese soups get. To top it off, our server brought us a plate of complementary focaccia bread that was to die for. I dipped it into my soup like a peasant. It was one of the best textural and flavorful pairings I have ever enjoyed. The deserts all sounded delicious. I was really tempted by the creme brule. But, since I only late half of my lunch thanks to my $#@%&*@ diabetic meds, I didn't let myself order it. It isn't something I am supposed to eat, anyway. There were ten of us seated around the table. I did not hear one single complaint about the food. Every comment I heard was positive. By consensus, we will be back next year.

Because of that I don't really go out and eat, especially, to places in highly tourist areas, 9 times out of 10 you can expect, almost without exception for the food to taste generic despite at ambiance and visual appeal of the place. Tack on to that, I hate over paying for anything I can do better at home. And I'm pretty good in a kitchen. So with great reluctance I agreed to dinner at the Gruene River Grill. Like many places in a tourist trap the ambiance was good, nailed It. But I expected it. The service was good, as it often is. Unfortunately in a touristy area I don't give restaurants credit for those two pieces. I ordered the pork chaps and my wife ordered the pork medallions. They arrived at the table and immediately I began to realize my negative expectations were being challenged. The food was hot, not warm, hot. The plate visual was beautiful. Portion size, easily for two, at least the pork chops. I was sure this is where the positive experience would end. Then I took a bite. Negative expectations defied! I make a damn good smoked bone in pork chop, but this made mine seem like second hand at best. This was THE BEST pork chop I had ever had. I don't think I talked for the rest of the meal. Delicious! Beautiful. Handled with care. Did I say delicious. Did I say it was better than any other pork chop I had ever had? In case you missed it. It was the BEST pork chop I'd ever had and I just wanted to say, "thank you" to the GRG for such a welcomed and unexpected surprise! (My wife felt the same about her order)

Title: Definitely Not Their Best Night…read more I've eaten here at least four or five times and have always been impressed with the food. It's a casual, family-style environment, including the bar area, which is essentially one large communal table where anyone can grab an open seat. Unfortunately, today was completely different. The moment I opened the front door, I noticed a strong gas-like odor that became more noticeable farther inside. I mentioned it to the staff and was told a manager attributed the smell to being near sewage. That explanation didn't make much sense to me considering I've eaten here several times, they haven't relocated, and I've never smelled anything like it before. I stayed, but then my soup arrived cold and my made-to-order tacos were also cold. I eventually took my food to go. The waitress herself was pleasant, and I still tipped her 30% because these issues weren't necessarily hers to control. I've had enough good experiences here that I wouldn't write the restaurant off based on one bad visit, but between the unusual odor and cold food, this was definitely not the experience I've come to expect.
