This was our first time checking out this location after being regulars at the Old Town spot (so sad it closed!). Happy to say this one totally lives up to it. Shared a delicious artichoke and eggplant pizza and it was the perfect size to share with fine "pickupableness" with Neapolitan texture and flavor. An extra treat was that they have bottles of spicy oil on the tables, so I was able to enjoy the crusts by slathering them with the tasty oil as though they were breadsticks. On the way out, after mentioning to the bartender how good the oil was, I was gifted a couple of condiment cuplets to-go, which was a thoughtful and nice touch and sort of made up for the server who wasn't particularly warm or informative as I had to ask about the specials and whether or not all the pasta is freshly made, etc. Heck, if you have a great selling point like homemade pasta, talk it up and get us to drooling! There is a variety of seating available, including outside and at the bar--bar has an inside section as well as outside which is a nice design for the lovely weather days. However, it's unfortunate that the outdoor seating is on such a busy traffic corner, so it's not the little retreat it would otherwise be. The lunchtime music was more like happy hour music, not conducive to conversation--maybe for the cellphones-at-the -table crowd it's okay, but being near the Phoenix Art Museum and Arizona Opera, why not add to the cultural experience of the area by celebrating its Italian origins with some Italian music? Even if just added as interludes during every few pieces, it would enhance the ambiance. We had to raise our voices to carry on our conversation, but it was manageable. However, when I came back the next week with a friend with a hearing impairment, it became more problematic. She tried adjusting her hearing aids, but the thumping rhythm kept taking precedence as we tried to find a quieter corner, but it wasn't possible as it is a small space and speakers were close to each table. I felt so bad that she couldn't enjoy a meal there--we both were so looking forward to having a fresh pasta dish, but just couldn't stay. Upon leaving, I felt I should let management know why so I waited to speak to him, offering constructive criticism about the sound level but he was not the least apologetic nor said he would take it under advisement, but was completely dismissive and harrumphy as though we were annoying problems and not potential regulars with suggestions worthy of consideration. How hard would it be to have a quieter area or make a speaker accessible with volume control? My friend and I dined here last night after seeing a show at the Hershberger Theatre. We had such a great dinner. The wait staff are phenomenal. They are very friendly, attentive, amd personable. They make you feel at home. The restaurant has a fun and inviting vibe with both indoor and outdoor seating. I love that they have appetizer specials as well as main entree specials. Our waiter explained the specials very well and made good food recommendations. We shared the appetizer special which was a cheese trio. It was delicious but only came with two small pieces of bread. The staff were happy to bring us more. My pesto gnoccchi was fresh and well seasoned. The portion was huge in my opinion. The drinks were good and we received generous hours of our wine and free limoncello shots after dinner which was a very nice touch. I will definitely be back. It's worth making a trip downtown for. I have been to Forno 301 Phoenix two times, both for dinner on weekdays before performances at the Phoenix Theatre Company. While they don't have a parking lot, I was told I could park at Muse Apartments for free. The signage at the apartment complex says that you have to pay, so I wasn't willing to roll the dice. Instead, I've parked for free on a side street a few minutes away by foot both times. Ambiance (3/5): There's good and bad here. It's a charming Italian restaurant with a nice patio as well as bar seating, high tops, and tables inside. The bar seating has bar stools without back support which is always a detriment for someone with an old man back by me. It's a relatively small restaurant, too. My most recent visit was on a Wednesday evening, and they were almost at capacity. The acoustics are quite bad, so it's one of those experiences where you have to scream to hear your dining partner. Service (3/5): A tale of two cities. The first time around, the service was solid. The second time around, almost non-existent. Our waiter never came around to check on us and we had to track him down to get a refill and also for the bill. They were busy, but you expect better. Drinks (N/A): I've had Arnold Palmers both times, so not much to comment on. With that being said, they do have a full bar. Food (4.5/5): On my first visit, I had their margherita pizza. Simple, but a classic. On my second visit, I had their salame calzone, which is essentially a meat lover's calzone. Their menu consists of appetizers, salads, pizzas, calzones, and pastas. It's a simple menu, without meat-centric entrees. Which is a little different, but what they do, they do well. The pizza here is authentic Italian pizza. I've been to Italy four times and I've had pizza there too many times to count. You can also tell the quality of their ingredients from the quality tomato sauce to the mozzarella used. My only complaint? The calzone was spicy, and this wasn't indicated on the menu. As someone who can't handle too much spice, this took away from the dish for me despite the quality of the ingredients. Next time around, I need to try one of their pasta dishes. She didn't even serve the first glass of water--a small but telling moment. It felt like she wasn't there to create an experience, just to take an order. One of my favorite restaurants in the valley, I've been going since they were at their previous location! The quality of food here is on point. You can't go wrong with basically anything on the menu, but I especially like the Acciughe Pizza and Carbonara. The salty anchovies impart their flavor across the whole pizza and the crust has that beautiful wood fired taste. If I have even been to a restaurant that deserves a Michelin star, it's this one! Truly one of the best places I have ever eaten in the United States. Everything, from the espresso, to the homemade pasta, to the creme brulee was incredible; I felt like I was eating in Europe! Even the water here was good. I seriously can't get over how DELICIOUS the food here was. Everything was homemade, fresh, seasoned and cooked to perfection. The service was excellent - we arrived shortly after 8pm and there was no wait. It was surprisingly easy for us to find parking in the lot next door, which thankfully had marked parking spots for the restaurant - also nearly impossible to find when eating downtown anywhere. Perfect spot for a romantic date, and the pasta is a MUST try! It's a pretty big serving as well, I had enough fettuccine to share with my husband and still bring some home. It took a few minutes to get menus and we had to ask for them but after that, everything was amazing. Bartender was great--let my friend try a couple of wines before committing. We split a pizza and a salad. The margarita was great. Could have been a tiny bit crisper, but I was really happy with it. The dressing on the mista salad was amazing. There's something so simple and effective by Forno 301. It doesn't attempt to appear more than it is. It's unmistakably European not only in ambiance but in service as well. If that bothers you, and you need the overbearing American quick service, this isn't the place for you. The owners and staff are Italian and it shows. The pizza is like something you would find in a small restaurant somewhere in a corner in Rome. Every element of the pizza is tasty, but most especially they have the best pizza sauce in city. There's no frills, nothing is attempting to lure in social media posts or instagram foodies. It's just simple good pizza at a good price. Hot take but it was better than Bianco on a recent outing there (never been the same since Chris stopped making pies and instead became a restaurateur, it's now a true shell of its former self). First of all i couldn't stop talking with my index and middle fingers pressed against my thumb like i was a soprano. Walk into an open floor plan with absolute local vibe, i can tell a lot of the customer lived in building or near by. That's not a bad thing sometimes your neighborhood has beautiful people that like to talk not kick ya out haha. We had the pasta of the day and it blew us away perfect amount of olive oil to pasta, the sausage was chopped in big chunks and the broccoli cooked to perfection hard to do in a pasta in my experience it always come hard and cooks thru during your sitting, thru a little spicy oil over the top and didn't have to bother with the salt... and trust i have a salted pallet good stuff chef! Daughter got the panini and i couldn't help but to take a bite of her sandwich flavors are great cheesy forward with the prosciutto coming in with the tomato right behind, bread was nice and crispy but not a danger to the top of your mouth :). This is one of our favorite places ! Roberto , the lunch time bartender is top notch, and the blonde female evening bartender makes excellent drinks. These two will make sure you enjoy your visit. I enjoyed my Rucola (arugula) salad very much, and everyone in our party enjoyed the food: the Eggplant and Caprese appetizers were a big hit, and as you might expect the wood fired pizza was fantastic. As others have noted, gluten free options are limited to salad (FYI). With all these glowing statements you may wonder: why only 4 stars? Unfortunately the service was a bit off. We never had the chance to try to wood fired bread, and once we placed our order, never saw the server again. Forno was quite empty this afternoon, so it was puzzling. We had high hopes for this place. It's in a great city corner area, access to reach so many new people. Unfortunately the service was terrible and the food was mediocre. Our server sat us and took our orders and literally never came back. Two additional waitstaff gave us our food and drinks and also never returned. Food was bland, calzone was super runny, pizza was not hot, and overall it all added up to a bust. We even had to find someone so we could pay our bill and ask for a box- which we didn't even want but felt badly leaving so much. The table next to us was complaining of the same issue. The waiter inside, albeit nice, indicated there was a party on the other side of the restaurant that was taking the attention of the waitstaff. While that can be understandable, perhaps communicate that ahead of time or simply don't seat tables if you can't provide adequate service. This is a good spot to try within walking distance of the PHX Art museum or the theatre. It seems always busy with a dinner crowd. Service is quick and they have a nice indoor/outdoor bar for cooler days. Yummy wine and beer offerings. Pizza was just ok.
