Family locally owned, women owned amazing place in Boston. They cater and attended a baby shower at the restaurant. The food is fresh and delicious. The service was fantastic. The owner is attentive and was present throughout the event. If you want to celebrate an event there is no place better. The options were plentiful. There was lasagna, rice, beans, chicken pasta, roasted pork, jerk chicken and the most delicious drinks. Reasonably priced so you can host your shower, rehearsal dinner, retirement, and birthday. Delicious food in a homey setting with an even more charming owner. My friends and I stopped by last night for a casual meal after work, only to be greeted by a Roxbury staple, Norvia. The heart and soul of the restaurant, she's been keeping the neighborhood fed and warm for over twenty years! What made this place special was the way she sought to make it feel like you were a guest at her home - always accommodating, willing to bend over backward, and making sure you had a positive experience. Avoid for Sunday brunch if you actually want to eat. Kitchen staff was slow. Our waitress was MIA (late for work) to the point that one of the bartenders had to help out. That bartender, whatever his name was, was amazing. The drinks were on point. But the food service was a disaster. Also do not offer the regular lunch menu to your customers and claim they are going to serve it if they aren't going to do that. I understand there was another event to prep for, but TELL your guest right away that the chef decided not to do that. Communication is key and is something that this place lacks. read more

Last night, tried to enjoy a meal in the neighborhood and clearly things have changed. All the things pictured on this site is outdated. When we went there they only had chicken tenders/fries and fried beef. It look like the waiter pulled the menu out the trash. I asked for a hamburger and asked for lettuce and tomato - the waiter had the audacity to be like "I don't know if we can accommodate that, I need to ask the chef" and on a Friday night they didn't even have lettuce or tomato. The owner is usually there when I go but she wad missing that day. They didn't even have their classic chicken wings as well. This establishment has taken an extreme downturn - I regret going there last night. read more

9/25/2017 This was my second time at Fort Hill Bar&Grill and it was very disappointing. Note: this review is solely about the service and the way the place operates. We did not eat a meal. We attended what was billed as their Grand Opening this past Sunday from 3-6 pm. Upon entering shortly after 4pm I there was a nice crowd in the establishment eating and chatting, buoying my hopes for a successful dining experience. Unfortunately for the 60 plus minutes that we were there not only did we not get to order but, by the time I was able to get someone's attention I was curtly told that the kitchen was closed. I found this to be confusing because when we were initially seated (limited brunch menus were on the table) and gave our drink order, the waitress returned with our drinks asked if we wanted to order then never returned to our table until we were ready to leave, frustrated by the news of the kitchen closing delivered by another waitress. Our original waitress told us that the reason we didn't get to order was our fault since we weren't ready when she asked. An untrue statement because when the waitress started to take our order she turned to me first. Since I was the last to arrive to table (only on street parking!) I nudged my daughter and told her to go first. I guess the waitress interpreted that as not being ready because she walked away from the table (I'm not even sure if she promised to come back) and we didn't see her again for another 40 minutes or so. I was able to get the attention of another waitress who told us that kitchen was closed. When I explained our dilemma, she stared at me blankly stating she would let someone know. An older gentleman in a suit came over to our table with a large tray of empanadas. He offered them to us as I guess a peace offering. But even this gesture was sloppy because didn't have place settings or bread plates. When I pointed this out to him he told us to use the cocktail napkins on the table. Oh yeah cause if the kitchen is closed then there's no clean dishes! We hungrily accepted the cold empanadas waiting to see if further nourishment would be offered to make up for the gross oversight. I then decided to get up and let the owner know what had happened. Once again she told me the kitchen was closed but, would be reopening in 30 minutes. She said our dinner order would go to the top of the list. I declined. Not because I didn't think my meal wouldn't be good. I'd eaten there about a month ago and the food was tasty. I declined, because the service was so poor that at one point my daughter got up to refill my water glass. The waitstaff on one of the most important days was so focused on serving the VIPs (Mayor Walsh) and taking photos, that they ignored the local, paying customers. This isn't a good way to gain community support for your business. Mayor Walsh won't be the one coming to Roxbury weekly for a Friday evening meal. Poor service without comping your customers can seriously hurt a restaurant's reputation. As we were leaving the assistant manager (there wasn't a shortage of staff just good service) approached us to say that our original waitress wanted us to know that she thought we weren't ready to order. Huh? Why are you wasting us time making excuses for an employee who clearly is not ready to work in a restaurant? This was a bad move on his part. It made it crystal clear why the place doesn't function as well as the local Friday's in South Bay. Stop making excuses and hire some quality staff so diners will want to eat there! read more

It truly pains me to give this establishment a one star review. I came here with a friend last night and it was absolute chaos in terms of service. We waited thirty minutes for a drink and ended up leaving because they had one clearly overwhelmed bartender trying to take orders. There was a group of women next to us who were waiting for dinner service and no one even acknowledged them. I've come here a few times prior and the service has been lacking but it has never been as bad as it was last night. The owner was running around frantically trying to establish order. She had a very loud conversation with the security at the door to ask him why he hadn't been collecting money from people for the cover. I thought this was very unprofessional. It's sad because this place has tremendous potential but there are too many staffing/customer service issues for me to ever come back again. read more

The menu is quite varied with reasonable prices...Friday and Saturday nights there is usually a DJ and there is space for dancing! There are two separate bar and dining areas with wide screen TV's. Me and my friends decided to do our 6 month check in last Saturday and we decided to go to Fort Hill Bar and Grill. Now this is my third time coming to this place. This particular time they were having an event going on and so the only table space they had was downstairs which was not that much. It was 4 of us, so we were able to sit anywhere downstairs in that area. They did not seemed to have many waitress working. There were some things on the menu that were not available which is not a good thing since your menu is already limited. They had a substitute chef back there so that was not good either. I ordered the shrimp cocktail and it was cold, which i guess looking at the description I would not assume it was. Overall, this would not be my go to place but a last resort. read more

I often walk to/from Downtown Boston to/from our home in South Newton via Washington St. and the Arboretum (10 miles in total). It's a very interesting walk, but the three miles between Mass Ave. and Forest Hills are now and always have been a culinary desert. I'd been intrigued by the Fort Hill Bar & Grill since it opened this summer - it stands out as a clean, modern restaurant in a neighborhood that has very few dining choices (particularly between Egleston and Dudley, where there are maybe one or two other commercial establishments - a liquor store and a convenience store). Today I finally checked out the Fort Hill menu and, having missed my normal lunch, decided to give it a try. The haddock imperial with crabmeat sounded good and it did not disappoint. I'm a haddock expert (we usually make fortnightly trips to Maine so I can get my fill) and this plate went above and beyond - a fresh and flaky filet, generously sized, with a delicious lemon-butter sauce that had a fresh pico de gallo folded in. The sauce wasn't too heavy and it had a perfect kick to it. Very balanced and well-prepared. I've been trying for the last 20 years to find a go-to haddock spot in Boston, and now I've finally found one. If you like fresh seafood, order the haddock imperial and you won't be disappointed. To drink I had a homemade guava-tamarind smoothie which was also very delicious. I only wish they had more vegetarian options - I spoke with the owner and she said that they did have a homemade veggie burger for a while but there wasn't much demand for it, and since they make everything fresh the chef decided they couldn't keep it on the menu. She did say that the Sunday brunch always has a vegetarian menu which varies based on the chef's choice. I hope the Fort Hill Bar & Grill will be successful because it's a real asset to the community and sorely needed. There's nothing like it in a two- or three-mile radius. The owner said that she had owned the bar that had been on the same site a couple of years before - I was happy to hear this, as I'd presumed from the very modern appearance of the place that it was opened by some wealthy outside investors. Also, the owner mentioned that she would be carrying on her tradition of offering up a free Thanksgiving meal to the community on Wednesday. Well done. So, it's definitely worth the trip. For out-of-towners, that area of Roxbury (Washington Street and points west) is perfectly safe, and Fort Hill has some amazing history and architecture including the Victorian water tower and its surrounding square of townhouses on Fort Ave., with great views of the city and some unique outcroppings of Roxbury puddingstone. I would recommend that you park directly on Washington Street, which has plenty of free parking. read more

What was upsetting was that the only way for the waiters to know what table they were talking about was to point directly at them, which cause a lot of uncomfortable eye contact. Nice neighborhood spot to grab some good Dominican inspired food. I had a chicken taco and side order of rice and beans, both very good - like someone's abuela was cooking in the back. They have other non-hispanic food but that's the owners background so I knew it would be good. The bar is more cocktail than beer, so note that there's not a single tap just bottles. Had a business lunch on Thursday with a good friend and my lovely wife. I did what my greedy self normally does - ordered LOTS of food. I had the huge House Salad built for two, Spicy Chicken Wings and the Spicy Mussels with Rice. This is a very nice place for the community and I hope the people support it so it stays. The beer was skunked, the decor was nice, but the service wasn't very good, and he beer selection was not good. At least they had Sam Adams. To top it off, they have a $10 minimum on credit, but it appears nowhere on the bill. I wanted to grab a quick drink on my way home but had to spend $6 more in items I didn't want. Not very good. If you don't mind slow service, waiting a long time for your bill and arbitrary credit minimums, then go for it. I know there aren't many places in the neighborhood. Maybe if I came for food it would have been a better experience, but it fails as a local bar. read more

Worst customer service ever!!! This was my very first time visiting this place. I was told by my co-workers how the food and drinks were good. I decided to sit at the bar and have some drinks. The owner of the bar came up to me and asked me to move from the bar so her "regulars" can take my spot at the bar. She was so wrong for asking me to move. Very unprofessional. Avoid this place at all cost. We got two margaritas ($10 on the menu). When my friend asked for the check, the server took his card, went into the kitchen, and came back with the card reader. It is only when he was about to sign that my friend realized he had been charged $38. The manager came at us, asking very rudely, "is there a problem?" and claimed there was a $5 cover. We had to NEGOTIATE in order to pay the price written on the menu. I will never set foot there again. read more

The even bigger disappointment is that when we jumped and screamed the owner acted as if it may have just been a snake when we clearly saw it was a rat. Waiter was terrible but he was new...literally first day on job...not blaming him but the owner. She actually sat and watched her waiter struggle, provide me and my party with incorrect information and literally have to wait over an hour for food and as to say screw you even more sat at the end of our table. I blame her and not him....this is your business! Never once said a word apologized anything. The owner is the cook, she appears to hire sub pare individuals that have no restaurant experience. Tonight I had the pleasure of dinning at the awesome Roxbury eatery!. I LOVE the ambiance. So super chic and cute! NOTHING like it in the neighborhood. The staff was friendly and constantly checked on us. And it was mind blowing to me that OWNER took a seat and conversed with us. She was very welcoming to us in her establishment. The place is super cute! The music was good. We came for the Reggae Brunch. But the service and the food was mediocre. They only had three things from the menu. The home fries came out ice cold. They sent us a "fresh batch" still ice cold. Omelet came but the ingredients onion, broccoli, etc came in large chunks. Like the entire head of the broccoli. The manager apologized but didn't take anything off the bill. I may come again. But just for music and a drink. read more
