During this same time, the Masons realized most of their membership was dying off, so they decided to have a group recruitment, kind of like a Moonie mass wedding. Each person recruited would automatically be bounced up three degrees in status by merely observing the rituals rather than participating (and, no, I'm not spilling beans, but only because I've forgotten nearly all of the secret stuff). So my friend asked me and a couple of others to join, thinking his status within the organization would be enhanced by his zealous recruitment. I really just wanted to see the interior of the enormous and grim building, which is tucked directly behind City Hall, and found myself standing in the lobby of the temple with a guy from Brazil and a long-haired kid, all of us in suits, milling with a few hundred other guys, the vast majority of them older, chummy businessmen glad-handing each other like George Babbitt. All of the 'public' rooms were large, high ceilinged, dusty and kind of dowdy, and barer than I'd expected. A billiard room, a very large and sort of institutional dining room, and lots of side rooms hung with portraits and photos of old members and fantastic old representations of masonic cosmology. The space was beautiful in a quietly noble-despairing kind of way and I finally got to see it, but of course, now I am a Mason.

I didn't stay at the hotel because it is pretty pricey, but I visited their Lounge after getting dinner in town. Didn't have a reservation so getting into the restaurant bar was impossible but they told us we could walk around the corner to their lounge. Upon entering the lounge, we were greeted immediately and told that there was no available seating due to full reservations yet half the bar and a few of the lounge tables were empty. The guy said he would take our names and that it could be up to an hour wait so we did that and stood there. After nearly 45 minutes and those empty bar seats + lounge yankee still not being filled, he offered us a half of a couch next to another couple. We would've sat next to them sooner if only he let us! Aside from that, service was fast and drinks were good. The menu included signature cocktails that paired with the Maker's signature fragrances. I tried the Rebel which was pretty good. We ordered some bites -- the beef tartare with onion rings and a side of fries. I love a beef tartare which is so rare to find as many places offer Tuna. It really hit the spot. Moral of the story: Make a reservation!

Picture super high ceilings and a dark but cozy space. I also loved my drink (the Dream cocktail) which was a perfect drink for autumn. My friend got the Naked cocktail which I personally didn't like (I'm not a fan of gin), but wow was the presentation of the cocktail incredible. Our server was friendly as well and gave us some nice suggestions for the drinks. We also walked through the hotel to its main entrance so that was nice seeing the way it was decorated.

I called down for room service that I planned on picking up myself. Because I couldn't get a direct line from the room I had to call the front desk. I was informed by the front desk that they no longer take room service. I explained that I would be picking it up but the guy said no. I walked down to the restaurant bar to order my salad. The bartender who took my order said that she has a direct line. I informed her that they would not let me call it directly. When the bartender brought me my salad, she was more embarrassed than I was that I was paying $30 for this pathetic meal. They cut the salmon to a very small portion. It was very cold and tasted super fishy. This hotel has gone downhill over the last year. They also brought me the wrong side, and put the wrong cheese on my coworker's burger. The fire alarm was also going off for about 20 minutes but no one seemed alarmed or told anyone to exit. It was loud and the waitstaff was unfriendly. If you're staying at the hotel, skip this place and walk around a bit. There's some cool local places nearby with way better food at fairer prices. On top of that, they charge $23 per person for a very basic and standard continental breakfast. Go to one of the cafes up the road and buy a breakfast sandwich instead.

The property features spacious gardens, lush foliage, many areas to sit and reflect and nature to walk and explore. The Ram Dass Library is very nice. You cannot borrow books but enjoy in the AC comfort. The main hall is spacious for events. The dining hall features enough indoor, porch and lawn seating. Lines are never too long. The food is healthy, featuring plant protein, One day they served an unappetizing shredded chicken dish. Gluten free options were available but basic and not too inspiring. They have a lovely assortment of teas. There is a lot of veggies and a strong hand with garlic and spices and onions. if that's your fancy. The salad bar was basic but plentiful. There are dorms, cabins and campsites. My semi private cabin was comfortable and clean and pretty modern but, due to wooden frames and the door latches, movement from dorm and cabin mates can impact your sleep hygiene. I shared a cabin with a short person who weighed about 150# and I swear an elephant was in their room. I tip toed in mine and still made noise. We sorted out the door latch to be courteous. The arrival system is flawless. There is plenty of parking as well. The cafe has a nice assortment of beverages but limited food. I did not see the desserts ever that were advertised on the video. Their locally made kombucha is divine. This is a lovely space to relax in the AC and on the deck. The bookstore is chock full spiritual treasures. Their prices are very good as well. They also have a personal care area where I scored my beloved Skin Trip lotion, Overall, I found my experience to be wonderful due to my chosen event. The food was ok but in truth, I ate just enough for sustenance. It was not the highlight for me. I spent around 1200.00 for 5 nights with food and an additional for the event. I was surprised to learn the recordings are extra. The staff made the experience quite pleasant and the surroundings, lovely. The overall vibe is an adult summer camp for those seeking some zen. Good for me and a lovely respite from the chaos of the world.
