I did question myself if I was better off ordering from a neighborhood Chinese place than ordering an authentic meal. Menu wise this is the most traditional Chinese food you're going to find in the area. BY FAR. I wish I ordered more of the traditional dishes but I just wanted dumplings and lo mein. I will 10000% be returning for more dishes and will definitely be sitting down. When I went inside it was way nicer than what I was expecting for dining wise. I've been coming to fortune cookies with my family for the last 8 years. I have never once been disappointed in the food here. It is very authentic Schezuan cuisine with very fast service. Leo is the owner and a very nice man always willing to chat. My favorite dishes here are the cumin beef or lamb, the sauteed green beans, the hot and sour chicken hunan style and the ginger flounder. The food is very flavorful and I've brought several of my friends here who continue to rave about our experience. Definitely doesn't look appealing from the outside and the interior is very unassuming however my gosh their food is very authentic Hunan and exceptional! The menu I will admit is a bit intimidating for one unfamiliar with such authentic Chinese cuisine and quite extensive. If I went on my own I'd be at a loss what to order but fortunate for me I was in company with a group that knew. If there's a place in NJ I can eat everyday for the rest of my life, I'd pick Fortune Cookies without a blink of the eye. It's a foolproof option for my Chinese taste bud. It's AUTHENTIC, spicy, flavorful and fresh. Crispy pork ribs, omg, deep fired with deep flavor. Every rib is seasoned to the bone. The first bite, you HEAR crispy, and then the second bite the pleasure of fat and protein echos in your mouth with the simple seasoning of salt and pepper. It's a wonderful day to be a omnivore. And then there's the endless options of fish. From the fish head to the whole fish, every single one of them delights me. The fish soup superb, the fish meat silky. I think what's even more impressive of the place is that they experiment with new dishes every now and then despite already having a menu as thick as a cookbook. The photos and reviews led me to believe this was an authentic Chinese restaurant, perhaps it is, but my dish was a complete miss. Very disappointed by the quality of my meal. I decided to try something new and ordered "Chinese herb and frog in hot pot". It's not something exotic that disappointed me. It's the fact that I didn't get what I paid for. For 25 dollars all I got was a flavorless, frog boned, bell peppers and yams plate. No frog meat just frog bones and I didn't see an herbs at all. So essentially the plate is a mix of bell peppers and plenty of yams. I could barely get through 1/4 of it. Word of advice, order something else. read more

Unlike some restaurants that pass off dishes with the same spicy sauce, every dish has its own unique flavors. The scallion pancake is never a wrong choice as an appetizer. It was served hot and crispy, so was a good appetite opener. The whole fish was a decently sized fish for the value. The sauce was sweet and savory, and despite being immersed in sauce, the surface of the fish was still crispy. The Mala pot was also very authentic in its taste; would recommend if you are going for a hodgepodge of different kind of meats, tofu, and veggies. The presentation side of me do wish they can serve it in a more authentic and aesthetically pleasing container compared to the regular white bowl it came in. Hidden Gem Alert. My wife and I just tried this place for first time and must say we were very pleasantly surprised. The name of this place suggests your generic Americanized Chinese restaurant but the taste reminds us of food we had back in China - very authentic. Come on, how hard is it to seal all the boxes tightly or double bag them to avoid leaking in the car? I ordered 5 dishes and they included only 2 chopsticks and 2 pieces of napkins, when I specifically asked them "are there chopsticks and napkins" before leaving the restaurant. When you drive by, Fortune Cookies is rather easy to miss and not exactly inviting from the outside. However, it's a very solid spot for authentic Hunan style food. The menu is very expansive. Like the name of the restaurant, the English translations don't really translate well to the actual name of the dish so I suggest trying to find pictures if available. I went with the ox tongue/tripe in spicy pepper sauce, beef stew in casserole, chicken in hot chili oil, and sautéed pork kidney. Everything was good, as were the portion sizes. We went on the last night of Chinese new year, it was very busy. They couldn't possibly be prepared on that Saturday night for the crowd that was coming. It was a little bit understaffed, but the people that own the place, and who cooked and served the food we're very pleasant. We did have to wait a while to place our order, that was really based upon the night that we went. Knowing this, we were very patient. the food was very good, and the price was very good for the value. Been here twice so far and have loved it both times! There were only two of us so we couldn't try as many things as we would have liked. There was a lightly spicy noodle soup that was so good! Fortune Cookies (or Lao HuNan or 老湖南) is a cute little Chinese restaurant located off of route 206. It's conveniently placed near a lot of largely Asian towns, meaning that the place does get busy at night and on weekends. There's tons of parking in the back, but make sure you don't accidentally drive by. I recommend arriving before 6 on weekends, because it really does get crowded and larger parties (5+) will take some time to be seated. My family and I have came here multiple times over the years. The quality of the food really depends on the chef who is making the food that day. Luckily, they seem to have hired a new chef recently who makes the food quite well - spicy and not too salty. They also recently redid their menus to include a bunch of new dishes - still, make sure to ask for the daily specials. We tried a variety of dishes - lamb, pork, chicken, and beef. The fuji feipian (small dish starter) is great here, but a little oily. Their ShuiZhu Niu (Spicy Beef Stew) is by far the best dish here. We always get it! We tried the other dishes, which were all good but not too outstanding. It's definitely worth just picking a meat or veggie, and then asking the servers for suggestions. Service wise, the people work quickly which can be nice when you're hungry but can also come off a bit rude. Really depends on context. Overall, the restaurant is clean and it is BYOB if you want to bring beverages. I definitely recommend this place for people looking for a more authentic Chinese experience. What's a tea house? Never mind the sign, the food at Old Hunan (oddly translated as Fortune Cookies) is excellent especially the cumin lamb, braised pork shoulder and three-spice chicken. Ignore the last page of the menu ("American Chinese food"). And don't eat too many of the free boiled peanuts (chopstick practice!) while you wait. I was spoiled by visiting with a native but she ordered straight from the menu. The pickle appetizer is a big plate of lightly cured cucumbers, not spicy just yummy. Ask if snow pea shoots are in season, stir fried they're excellent. The cumin lamb arrives as little pieces with toothpick skewers you'll build up a big pile of little sticks on your plate lol. Finally the pumpkin pancake is a lightly sweet treat. Many big tables with the obligatory lazy susan turntable in the middle, bring a crowd and order many different dishes. We used to go here a lot before we had kids. Tonight we gave it another try after a long hiatus. I think this place has gone downhill in a major way. We had a very disappointing takeout experience tonight. 1. We ordered using their website. One thing we ordered was #137 which in English was written "Salted Egg w Shredded Potato". But instead we discovered when we got home that it was salted egg and garlic with steamed eggplants, not at all what we were expecting, and (quite frankly) not very yummy at all. Only afterwards did I realize that the Chinese indeed said steamed eggplant (I am ABC and can read a little Chinese with effort). This is a major mistake in the menu that must be corrected!!!! 2. We ordered the hot and spicy pig ears appetizer (#1), but instead of crunchy, the pig ears were soggy and mushy. Gross!! 3. We ordered the wood ear in special vinegar sauce (#4) but some ingredient smelled and tasted very off (the garlic? the vinegar?) and we had to throw out the entire dish. There goes $7.95 down the drain! 4. We ordered the steamed spare rib with taro (#44) and it looked and tasted disgusting. The color was unappetizing (the meat and taro were both pale gray), the meat was chewy and not at all tender, and the dish was way too oily. Needless to say, I doubt I'll be going back here any time soon. It's so sad when a restaurant that used to be amazing declines so much. read more

As an occasional visitor of this establishment I must admit that the quality of the food has changed since the change in management. The prices are very reasonable, but I really think that the quality of some of the dishes could use some work. The appetizer of the husband wife combo was very thickly cut compared to other times I had it at different restaurants. See picture below The mala pot I had was well worth the price but was basically mala with the kitchen sink. Nothing too wrong with that but it was a shocker when it arrived on the table. There is no dish that tastes like Americanized Chinese food where everything is just sweet and sour. The decorations are sparse and the location is next to a small gas station. Hunan Style Pork Shoulder - The pork shoulder was really tender and had large pieces of delicious fatty skin. Instead of spicy, the sauce was more sweet and sour, which was a first for me. Never had sweet and sour pork shoulder before. Spicy Fish Belly - This dish really confused my family. We expected the dish to be spicy steamed belly of a fish, but it turned out to be this spicy stir-fried dish of something that tasted like conch. I think it was fish maw, but not too sure. It was good either way. Steamed Spareribs with Taro - Taro was delicious because it soaked up all the meat juices. Spareribs was alright. It was really surprising at how many Chinese families were there for New Year's. I thought ours would be the only one, but the place was packed. This place is as authentic Chinese as can be. My favorite Mapao Tofu was just as I had it back in Beijing. As we got in, we were served green tea and peanuts, nostalgia flowed back in further when I looked at the menu and saw all the popular dishes from China. I would highly recommend this place as an authentic cuisine try-out if you are looking to have Chinese food. If not, like my husband did, you can go for an American version of the Chinese dishes that you like. Definitely a must try!! The fish fillet completely absorbed all the hot chili oil and it was tender. The frog casserole--personally I'm not a big fan of frog. I didn't really eat much of it. Sweet & Sour spare ribs was really good. I didn't expect it to be that delicious, but it was really good. I wish I had more rice to mix the sauce with it. Fried Shrimp tofu balls with vegetables & mushroom was good. The shrimp tofu balls were huge. Good mix of taste and flavor. Candy taro was a disappointment. I believe they only use regular sugar to make the dish instead of using rock candy sugar. Decent dinner service, but my only question is why didn't I get a fortune cookie at the end. I've gone each few months for the last 2+ years it's been open ever since a Cantonese friend's parents raved about it. I've been hooked ever since, it's been awesome. I can't say enough about their delicious food. The spiciness is the infamous and true Hunan cooking (do not think anywhere else for Hunan cooking, this place has legit Hunan) with the peppercorn that numbs your mouth slowly making everything even better. My favorite dishes are the white fillet fish in chili oil soup and spiced lamb over onions. My goodness, too good. There isn't really any good authentic Chinese cuisine in the area (prove me wrong), but this place is authentic and delicious. If you have an appetite for the spice, look no further. An older Chinese woman with a forearm tattoo and a young college aged man weren't very friendly when attending to me. The other server was ok. My wife had read about this place on a Chinese website touting for its spicy food and authentic dishes. The menu boasted many "authentic" dishes, so we tried a few: Mao's Braised Pork, chili pepper fish head, "fly eyes," which was a vegetable (ong choy) dish, chili lamb, a clam and winter melon soup, and sliced pig ears in chili sauce. Hunan food is supposed to have a dry heat to it; use of a lot of dry chilis as opposed to Sichuan food, which uses chilis and the sichuan peppercorns to give it a numbing or "ma" sensation. Of the dishes that were supposed to be spicy, they were not. I even had to ask for a dish of chili sauce, and that was not spicy. Time to kick it up a notch fellas!
