The last time we dined here was before Covid. My previous review is still very accurate for THAT Fortune House. It closed and reopened for pick up and delivery only. I was so sad. It's under new ownership now. When I had called to see if POSSIBLY they were open for dine in, I was elated when they said YES! But then was so disappointed. They no longer serve my most fave dishes. The Jajangmyun, Jambong and the Beef with Bamboo. And the service? Our most favorite server, the one we loved, is no longer there. The food is just regular Chinese food now. Which is fine. The service? Well. It could be better... I suppose it could be worse as well. I think they just need better attention and then to SLOW down when they do provide that attention. Also... they charge 3.5% service charge for credit cards which is actually illegal. They can, by law, only charge 3%. Regardless... I'm slightly sad. They do have a lot for parking. read more

I've been coming back to Fortune House regularly lately and the change under the new ownership is definitely noticeable and a huge improvement. The kitchen is clearly prioritizing authentic flavors now--the dishes have that specific, savory heat you'd expect from Hunan-style cooking, which is a huge upgrade for the Munster area. The prices are very fair and reasonable, which I really appreciate. While I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more protein in the portions, the actual cook and seasoning of the food are excellent. It's a reliable, high-quality spot for a great meal without a massive bill. They say your food will be ready at a certain time and it isn't. Then they give attitude when you ask about it. Walk in, call in, delivery driver, it doesn't matter. I've ordered several times from this establishment and wanted to take a moment to share my experience. For delivery I ordered the chicken chop suey lunch special with choice of vegetable fried rice and veggie egg roll. I added a side of crab rangoon. My food was delivered piping hot, fresh and delicious. I'm not a big eater so I'll have lunch for 3 days. The fried rice was loaded with fresh veggies. Beautiful presentation and packed to the top !! I added the sweet sauce packet and a little soy sauce for more flavor. Same with the chicken chop suey which had huge chunks of chicken breast meat in it. The crab rangoon was savory and had plenty of crispy crunch to the bite and generous tasty filling. Egg roll was equally delish. I often purchase a small hot and sour soup and add a few spoonfuls to my food for an extra zing of flavor. Get ready to clear your sinuses with that soup. A wonderful soup which says a lot as I don't care for spicy food. Give this place a try and hope that you get Omarr as your DoorDash driver. Many locals recommended this place after the sudden closing of our regular spot of 20+ years so we gave it a try. No thank you. I placed the order online and was given a pick up time of about 25 minutes. When I went in to pick up my order, the whole place was very dark and it was super cold in there (like was the heat even on kind of cold). I was informed by a very polite man at the counter that there was a delay in the orders due to staffing issues. After another 30 minutes sitting in their lobby with several other annoyed customers, my order was finally ready. We decided to try our usual entrees and a couple of apps ($67 total). Both the Hong Sui and lobster sauce were soooo dark & that should've been our first clue that this was going to be an issue. Holy soy sauce Batman! The beef satay was an order of 4 skewers, cold, gristle, salty. The chicken wings were plain fried chicken - not bad but nothing notable. The shrimp and lobster sauce was full of a ton of shrimp and meat which was nice, but the amount of salt/soy made it difficult to eat. The Hong Sui chicken had large, beautiful chunks of breaded and fried chicken breast and fresh vegetables so I was excited but again the amount of sodium made it impossible to enjoy. After one piece of chicken, I was done. The shining star was the order of stir-fried green beans, which again were doused in soy sauce but a little more balanced due to the addition of some white rice. Today, the first time in many years, I went to pick up my order and I was appalled at how cluttered and dim this once great Chinese restaurant now appeared before my eyes. The lights were down low and the dining room looked like a creepy storage area. You guys really want your customers to see such darkness? The front desk and window was so cluttered and junked up, it was a mess. I could only imagine what a cesspool the back kitchen looked like which was out of view. They expect Munster people to feel confident and secure eating here? Sanitation! Do you know what that means? I ordered beef chop suey. If a Chinese place can screw up chop suey, there is no hope ordering anything else. My $11. order was skimpy and blah. There was barely any beef in my order. Disgusting. The plastic container with the lid probably cost more than the meager amount of food they put inside. I'm not coming there to buy a plastic container and lid, I'm coming for Chinese food. I looked up Yelp to find this place on my way back from Indy to home. I was very disappointed when I got home and tried my takeout selections. The Noodle Platter had barely any seafood, meat and vegetables. There was one huge green mussel with a piece of broken shell mixed in the noodle. Solid American Chinese food. A good go-to spot that's been around a long time, run by a Chinese family. Essentially, Fortune House could be anywhere in any suburban city in America. But somehow that's what makes it comforting. Prices are reasonable, portions are big. It's a large menu, so there are hits & misses. The Singapore Noodles aren't that great. Tje General Tso's checken is good. The egg rolls are my favorite. They're kinda fat and stubby. Loaded with good stuff. They aren't filled with strange meaty flavors or weird things like you sometimes get. The food was terrible. The Egg Foo Yong was not seasoned well. The fried rice was not good and may have been spoiled. The egg rolls were just okay. Overall, we had to throw the food out just to be safe because it smelled rancid. (We live far away, so we couldn't take it back). When at the restaurant placing our order, they only had 2 people working and there should have been 8 per one of the workers. The outside of the building looked nice, but the garbage out side smelled horrible. Inside the Dine-in section was closed and hasn't been open since 2020. I have never seen this dish look like another dish. I told the waitress it doesn't look like Szechwan chicken and she ignored the comment. It's ok because i never order from here again. This place is excellent. Great food for cheap and top notch service even when busy. Lunch specials are about $6 for a full plate of food that comes with soup too and an almond cookie afterwards (as well as obligatory fortune cookie). It's a great crunchy neutral flavor to finish off with. If you're ordering off their normal menu, get the pan fried noodles with something. It's worth the trade in for the rice and I LOVE my rice, though they're very friendly and might give you rice anyway if you ask for it. Got family and kids aren't yet open to newer choices? They've got American food too. This way, you could slowly edge the picky ones into more choices. I say this is recommended for kids 'cuz if you're an adult and aren't open to eating Chinese food by now, there's something seriously wrong with you. Looking for something more authentic? The Chinese Menu is also great and quite expansive. I highly recommend the crispy duck - it seriously kicks ass and is usually perfectly cooked with a serious crisp on the skin and tender meat. One of their more popular dishes (especially with the Asian crowd I've noticed) was their House Tofu. It comes in a giant black stone bowl and continues to cook a bit when it's at your table, serves multiple people so be prepared to share it. Best tofu in NWI! No exceptions. Yeah, I'm into this. First of all, I am really picky with Chinese food. I had really positive experiences with Chinese while living on the Northshore and on the Pacific coast..so I have to set the bar very low in the region. But even with low expectations, I was very happy with the food here! What struck me the most is that the food tasted CLEAN. Something that is very uncommon in the region. Typically, my impression of NWI Chinese food is "salty mush and mystery meat bits." But oh my, the veggies tasted crispy and fresh! The sauces didn't leave strange, lingering aftertastes. I didn't suddenly get a headache! I tend to gravitate towards veggie options, but I did try the Kung fu beef and it was enjoyable. The veggie fried rice and tofu was on point! Eh. It was hot, and edible, and everyone who worked here seemed very nice. Their takeout business is robust - people coming in and out the entire time we were eating. But the food didn't have much flavor, the sweet and sour sauce (I *think* that's what it was) was completely watered down, and the women's restroom was kind of gross and smelled overwhelmingly like heavy-duty bug spray. We were hungry and this was an easy off from the highway in the middle of a four-hour drive, so we stopped. Also a little cranky my food came out when my companions were half done with their own. Cannot tell from reviews how this ended up as four stars. I generally prefer local, small business-type restaurants, but I'll tell you that Panera, Five Guys and all sorts of other solid chains are nearby - next time we'll stick to those.
