This place was the perfect dinner spot for more of a laid back meal. I can't remember the waiter's name, but we connected over his family being from IL and CO. He recommended some of his top choices and had a very upbeat welcoming attitude. We also got a discount because we were staying at the Hilton Resort down the street. The food was pretty good. I particularly enjoyed the crab cakes. However, we ordered takeout and waited to arrive until our food should have been ready. When I got there, I gave the name and then waited. I saw them packing an order and then continued waiting 45 minutes while that order sat there. The host checked on me again and said he would try to see if he could hurry it along. Turns out my order was the one ready the whole time and even though I said my name and they checked on me twice, it took 45 minutes for me to get it. I came here because folks recommended it as being gluten-free friendly. That it was -- the menu is clearly labeled with "gluten sensitive" options that are made without gluten-containing ingredients. The food itself was underseasoned / bland, and the service wasn't great. Charitably, I'm going to assume they were a bit understaffed at peak lunchtime (noon), rather than that my server was straight up unpleasant. I had low expectations based on the reviews but we tried it because we didn't need a reservation and the menu seemed very reasonable. We sat outside which was nice but some of the seats did have bird poop on them. We changed out some chairs with an empty table and got seated. Service was super friendly. Our waiter was great. He kept the refills coming and he was really just a nice guy. We kept it basic. Burger - my daughter loved it. She also got salad as a side which she devoured. Chicken Sandwich - my wife and daughter both got the sandwiches. The sourdough bread was really good and the chicken was cooked perfectly. I got ribs. They were above average. I couldn't finish them and I took them back for lunch the next day. This was the most reasonable meal we ate in our two weeks in Hawaii. I wasn't expecting to find a Southern restaurant in Hawaii, but I'm glad we did. They don't take reservations, and the check in system using Yelp wasn't working when we tried to use it, but the wait wasn't too bad and the bartender made us a round of drinks while we were waiting. We started with drinks - the lychee martini was not too sweet, but not too sharp tasting and I really liked it. Everything on the menu looked really good and we had a hard time deciding! For appetizers, we had the fried green tomatoes, and even my Georgia friend rated them highly! They came out very crunchy with a sprinkle of salt, tomato, and had a good remoulade for dipping. But I like anything with a remoulade. Everyone was in the mood for seafood, so I had the Seafood Trio as my entree. The fish and shrimp were delicious, grilled with some blackening seasoning! The crab cake was a little soft for my taste, but still nice. The vegetable medly was a mixture of roasted and sauteed, and went well with the mashed potatoes. The food was great-- my kids had a delicious Mac and Cheese off the kids menu that was creamy and flavorful. My husband and I had the gumbo soup and the fish and chips. After trying every other restaurant in queen's and king's landing - and being informed the earliest we could be sat was 9:30 pm- 2 + hrs later, I went back to Foster's and implored the manager to seat us, because we couldn't send my sister on a 12 hour flight without anything to eat. I am glad they sat us and the service was hospitable and warm, the food pretty good, but that experience left a bad taste in our mouths for sure. - our server's pos system told her you were out of fish tacos. When we left just before 10 pm - we saw two freshly made orders sitting under the heat lamp. I was so excited to bring my friends to Foster's Kitchen! We live on Oahu and have been to the location in Kona many times, so was pleased to find out that there was also one in Waikoloa. We arrived on the late side, a bit before 8:30pm and were seated on the back patio in Omar's section. We weren't greeted for about 15 minutes and instead got to listen to Omar moan and complain about how he didn't want to take us. To put it lightly, he threw a tantrum. For all of us to watch and hear. I wouldn't typically call out a specific name, but the behavior was extremely unprofessional and needs to be addressed. This could be a nice little reminder that the restaurant is designed with clear windows & open doors which give a great viewing arena for guests. Although our experience did NOT start off on the right food, the other staff members redeemed our visit. The hostess was sweet and checked on us during the debacle. We could see her embarrassment that we had not yet been helped. I wish I caught her name. Then our server, Amber stepped up and took our table, which we are grateful for because she was awesome. She provided great service & was very apologetic. She was efficient and just friendly and welcoming enough, without being overbearing. We hope to visit her again before our trip is over. I am rating this review on her service and our overall experience, since we can tell that this is how Fosters Kitchen is typically run. Let's talk food. Everything was good. Some was great. The crab cakes for example, were absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, they didn't come with a free refill (joke) but would next time order this as my meal with a salad. Super meaty and flavorful. We also started with the fried green tomatoes, but they were just okay. A bit plain for our liking. Entrees; The blackened shrimp cobb salad was really good! We came for dinner and saw a good selection, so we decided to try. As with all restaurants here, they're only allowed 50% capacity so there's a wait for seating. They're pretty efficient and gives you time to walk around the shops in the center. The nice hostess sat us down and our friendly server explained the menu and specials. She explained that they make most of the sauce in-house instead of buying them. We opted for the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and fries. The bun was airy and flattened when I picked up the sandwich. The chicken was breaded but didn't have much of a crunch. It came with sliced onion, lettuce, tomato, and bacon---and a spear of pickle on the side. Tasted like a normal chicken sandwich. Not bad, but nothing special. The fries were made from fresh potatoes (like In-N-Out), so they're on the softer side. I'll be honest and say that the Stuffed Chicken looked weird. It had a large goop of gravy covering it. There was a circle of green sauce around the plate. We couldn't figure out what it was. It was a bit bland and had a taste of raw flour. The staff needs a serious attitude check. Our waitress yelled at another team member right in front of us as soon as we sat down about not wanting to take another table and going home. We asked if she wanted us to leave at that point and she basically said no but that she wouldn't take another table making the other people and us feel bad. We got there at 8 and they close at 10. Everyone around us was on edge, and the food was just okay. Had to send the country fried chicken back because it was so dry. The food also came out in less then 10 min. The ambiance was also weird and quiet given that across the street there was music playing at another restaurant and what had occurred here. So sorry, but I wasn't a big fan. I'm glad I tried it but I won't be back. I went to the Waikoloa location and maybe this was the mistake since the original is in Kona. You get to choose between indoor and outdoor seating which is nice. It's an interesting mix of a menu.. there are asian inspirations, American, southern.. it's a bit confusing but interesting. We ordered Goat Cheese Bruschetta, crab cakes, seafood pesto puff pastry, Chardonnay garlic calamari, candied bacon chicken club, and blackened shrimp and grits. I feel so bad saying this but I couldn't even eat what I ordered.. the shrimp and grits.. it was so salty. I am not one to normally say that but everyone at my table tried my food and agreed it was bad.. inedible bad. The shrimp was also over cooked so very rubbery. My friend said the chicken bacon club and the crab cakes tasted average, nothing special. The calamari was pretty good and was very tender. The pesto seafood puff pasty was delicious although very oily. At times I was wondering if it was fully cooked on the bottom but didn't bother me too much... it was pretty chewy though especially for puff pastry. Stopped in for lunch on a Sunday. The fish tacos were really some of the best fish tacos I have had in a long time, be sure to ask for some of the local hot sauces to go with the tacos. (1.5 hours pass trying to entertain a toddler while we wait outside the restaurant) We sit down (20 min go by) We order after flagging somebody down because said toddler is restless AF and by this point needs to go to bed. There's not enough Paw Patrol in the world. The man takes 9 people's dinner and drink orders WITHOUT WRITING IT DOWN (red flag). We joke about how the likelihood of him getting this right would be nearly impossible or he has the most impressive memory. 4 of 9 drinks arrive (20 minutes pass) I flag him down again. He says the system is wonky. Delivers remaining drinks (1hours passes) Our waiter tells us that all of our food WAS NOT INPUT INTO THE SYSTEM so has not been made. He says he will rush toddler's food and we ask for it to go. Food arrives 20 min later. They comped desserts but we didn't get one because we had to leave. Sigh. And SURPRISE. The food was delicious!
