I love this sun-filled coffee shop. They are one of only a few coffee shops in the city that offer French pour-over coffee. And that makes them awesome. I also enjoy a bowl of granola and some quality work time in this little shop. The wifi is free and fairly reliable, the people are friendly, and the service is great. Oh, it pains me to give a 1 star to anything in my neighborhood, but it must be done. I have visited Foundry several times and each time was equally frustrating. My first visit I ordered a tea and bagel and cream cheese. No joke, I waited 25 minutes for this simple order to come to me. On another visit I was the third person in line and all I was ordering was a Nicey Treat (http://www.niceytreat.com/... the avacado is fantastic!) and it took 20 minutes to get to the front of the line. My nice treat was melting by then. I'm a chai latte fan and ordering one here was a waste of money. Did they put a ton of water in there and nothing else?!?! It kills me that food and caffeine are only a block away yet I can't go there because the service absolutely sucks like a Dyson. The one saving grace for this place is that I had their dill tomato soup once (which took forever to get) and it was the bomb. My suggestion to Foundry: Hire more staff. You need one person on the register and another filing orders. You have a neighborhood of folks that love coffee and probably dislike commercialized Starbucks over on Capital. Trust me you have no competition from Thirsty Scholar... the service, quality of product are equally as bad as yours. Your advantage is an actual kitchen which TS doesn't have. I love this place. Its fairly close to home and has become my favorite shop to get work done. They have old fashioned booths you can sit in and some outdoor seating. The coffee is typically from Tinker so you KNOW its good. Truthfully, I don't eat here often, but when I have it has been decent. I was out doing domestic things (buying flowers and garden supplies) with my boyfriend and his little sister and we decided to swing by on our way home for a quick lunch. It was around 1pm when we stopped in. There were a few people working on their computers and a couple of families sitting at the (adorable) tables enjoying some lunch and coffee. We placed our orders at the walk up counter (pretty standard for a coffee shop), Doug and Carrie made their merry way to the outdoor seating, and I hung around to grab our Panini style sandwiches. Boy, did I wait. About 10 minutes after ordering, when my iced green tea was finally ready, I decided to go outside to join Carrie and Doug. 10 more minutes go by. Tick. Tock. 5 more minutes. At this point I can feel our plants that are waiting in the car breathing their final little plant breaths and I go inside to investigate the situation. "Almost ready". They hand me one sandwich and about 5min later the other two are ready. Maybe I just wasn't prepared for the long wait for warmed sammies, or maybe I was just a little impatient that day, but waiting 35 min for three $8 sandwiches (one that was basically a grilled cheese) seemed a bit excessive. Wait bitterness aside, the sandwiches tasted fantastic (four stars for the food, one for the service). So, this might be a good place to check out if you have some time to kill, but it's not ideal for a quick bite to eat. I might try back in a couple of months to see if they have the timing kinks worked out. read more

I really like the place: it has terrific south facing windows, large tables, good booths and a relatively spacious patio. There is a mix of business folks ranging from the creative startup folks to the standard wheelers and dealers, moms, hs kids, and other folks. There is a little of the hipster vibe behind the counter but it is tolerable. So why the points deduction? The coffee is so-so, sometimes it is a bit bitter. The major deduction, however, is for selling the worst almond croissant in the history of humankind. Nothing light and flaky about this little brick of gluttony and cholesterol, and nothing much tasty either. It was an oily mess, strangely cold in places even after being heated on the panini press. The place is consistently busy so they may not address these issues. They should though. The next new thing is always right around the corner and loyalty is built over time and not some location purchased birthright. I am eager to see them succeed and will be back but I would be happier if the coffee was a little less bitter and if they addressed the croissant debacle! read more

I really enjoy Foundry and the fact that they are within walking distance to my place. This is the perfect spot to grab a bagel and coffee in the morning (I recommend the everything bagel with spinach and artichoke cream cheese) or even a light sandwich at lunch (their vegetarian options are great!). The inside feels like a classic artsy coffee house and is perfect for sitting around and reading a book while enjoying great cup. The patio is amazing and definitely worth sitting at if it is warm outside. read more

This is a sweet new spot in a city sorely lacking in local coffee places. The coffee is awesome. I have had both an iced coffee and a regular cup. There is good music overhead, and a good selection of pastries and sandwiches. My only gripes? I paid almost $4.00 for a to-go cup of regular coffee. Granted, it was great coffee, but seemed a little steep for 16 oz of regular drip coffee. Perhaps this was an error? Seems inconsistent with the rest of the menu pricing. I like that they are trying the iPad method of a cash register, but the baristas are a little confused about it, and it seriously slows down their efficiency up front. Overall this place has a great thing going and I hope they continue to do well. read more

I haven't had any of the sandwiches yet but they all look really good. They carry all sorts of local goods from all over the city, including Long's Donuts and Nicey Treat. Went there on 23 June 19. It is the worst coffee I have ever had. I ordered an Americano with an extra shot. After waiting twenty-five minutes on the coffee, it was served cold at room temperature. I had to throw the coffee away. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. read more

Sorry but this joint is just too cute. A friend and I stopped in for lunch today and neither one of us was impressed. They offer 5 different pressed sandwiches all with historic Hoosier names. We sampled the Harrison featuring Goose City ham, and some other stuff. The only truly distinctive flavor, more so than the ham even, was the hot romaine pressed in the sandwich. Not a big fan of toasted lettuce. The bread had a nice crunch but the "innards" needed some pop. My friend had a Tarkington. That is a turkey and provolone sandwich. He was as un- thrilled as I was. The only thing keeping me from giving this place 5 stars are the prices... $10 is a bit steep for a breakfast sandwich and a coffee. That being said, said breakfast sandwich is super yummy (I've had both the bacon & egg with sriracha and the banana & Nutella) and the house coffee is bottomless while dining in. They also serve Long's donuts, saving a drive for us on Sundays. Oh, and they're walking distance to those of us in Herron Morton. The patio is a great place to have a cold drink and relax when the weather is warm, and the new, giant chalk wall outside is a nice touch for the kiddos. We've been to Foundry during numerous previous INDY visits and returned this past Saturday around 9am. The place was not busy or crowded. As usual, food was great, but service was really lacking. Ordered oatmeal, took a while and when we checked in, told they ran out and it would be another 10 minutes to make some more. Ten minutes later, told us it would be at least another 10 minutes (and that they never would have told us only 10 minutes in the first place). How can you not have enough oatmeal at 9am on Saturday? This followed our Friday am visit, where 5 minutes after we ordered and sat down to wait, they came back to tell us, "Sorry, we're out of oatmeal [that you ordered 5 minutes ago]," and "out of the Breakfast Press [that you also ordered 5 minutes ago]." We'll go back because the food is great and it's a neat place, but hoping that they can get their act together a bit more (or that the B team isn't working). read more

My partner lives in Herron Morton and he took me here for the first time the other day! I like how you can order the lunch presses as salads if you so desire. I also like that Foundry serves local custom-roasted coffee at reasonable prices. The iced coffee I ordered and the Morton press I ordered were both great--I highly recommend both! Meh. Foundry was fine, but not good enough to bring me back when there are other, better, shops closer to home. I had a pour over. I know it was Tinker's coffee, but they only seemed to have one roast because they didn't ask me which one I wanted. It was well brewed, but it took forever for the order to come up. Wifi was a bit slow, but workable. The thing that will keep me from coming back is the Herron high school kids that infested the place. They were loud and rambunctious. I was so distracted from my work when they showed up that I just left. I felt like I was in a high school cafeteria with kids running and telling all over the place. So glad that this part of downtown is getting little businesses like this. What a cute little coffee shop! Parking can be a little bit of a pain, but that's downtown for ya! (although there is parking directly in front on 16th during most normal business hours). Good thing it's close enuf to walk to for me, if I wanna go on a decent walk. Although 16th is usually a busy road, the patio doesn't feel like it's up against the cars. Those umbrellas are a must since it can get scorchingly hot under the sun there. LOVE their sandwiches (especially the Morton!), open late, and local offerings.I can't leave this place without a Circle City Sweets croissant. Sometimes coffee and food can take a while, so hopefully people aren't swinging by for a quick pick up but rather settling in for a leisurely stop.
