There are several tap rooms and brewery locations in Renton. But one in particular holds the hearts and imagination of Renton's local brew scene - that's the Four Generals. Located on Wells Avenue in the block of Renton that once housed Renton City Hall over 100 years ago, the founders of Four Generals have made this small place their own with their own creationss (try their seasonal Oktoberfest) as well as some guest brews such as Schilling Hard Ciders. We came in at 7:00 PM on Saturday night. Four Generals is in easy walking distance of anywhere downtown! It was easy to get to. It is small and laid back-there is plenty of seating indoors and outdoors, and they have a free library. It was very chill. I had never been here so I ordered a flight to get to know them. I chose three and had the person working there choose one for me. My new favorite beer is the Rauches Helles-this is a unique beer! It was light and smoky-I am definitely getting a growler of this in the future. I loved everything on my flight, even though I had a clear favorite. The moon berries was not too sweet, and I enjoyed the red ale and kolsch. Their beers are solid. I had a ball here-this is a comfortable spot to have a quick brew or stay for an hour or two. I had some extra time before an event in Renton last week so, of course, it seemed like the perfect time to check out this new-to-me brewery. It was a rare, semi-warm afternoon so I grabbed a seat on their cute outdoor patio and headed to the bar to order my beer. They had a Mexican Lager on tap and it was delicious. Clear, light, and with just the right combo of hoppy maltiness... it was perfectly brewed. This is a small spot, so I wouldn't go here with a big group, but what a fun place to hang out on your own or with a date. The dude at the bar was super friendly too! read more

This is the spot for us! They had Winter bock beer, I had already peeped this place out, it was on our list to go to while we were there. And it didn't disappoint us. It's a very small brewery, I don't think 25 people will fit in here. The bartender was cool, she said, that they only keep a couple of the IPA's on tap, but that's only to keep the IPA drinkers happy. The crowd that was there was cool, someone in the group made a bunch of cookies, and shared it with us. And the Winter Bock was on point! I wasn't totally in the conversation with her and my husband, but I think she also talked about Maibock! She was talking our language! We will ALWAYS come here when we go to Seattle. read more

Four Generals Brewing is another fine example of my theory that downtown Renton is really up and coming. They're slowly but surely getting some really cool spots to hang out! Four Generals is suuuuper chill (like most breweries). It's rather small but it's perfect for coming by for a few beers, or a flight! Another bonus - they're kid friendly and dog friendly. There weren't any kids while we were there, but there were several big dogs which we thought was awesome. They've got board games as well, so if you've got time to kill, that's an option! Both my boyfriend and I ended up getting a flight, which was at a great price - $8 for four 4 oz pours. I don't remember all of the beers I tried, but they were all really good. I'm super glad we stopped by here on our date night and am looking forward to coming back in the future! read more

Love how downtown Renton has improved and continues to be ahead of the curve ( city slogan, had to!) Highly recommend stopping in for a beer or two! We first enjoyed a flight of beer then settled on a red ale and their coffee beer (local Boon Boona coffee). Sorry I don't remember their beer tastic official names. There wasn't anything we tried that we didn't like. Vibe was laid back, friendly service and best thing is if your on the outskirts of the restaurant there are built in warmers in the ceiling. Very cute little spot in downtown Renton with great beer. The bartender, who I also assume is the owner was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about their beer. We ordered a flight of 4 of their brews and the bartender gave us pretzels to cleanse our palates. The West Coast Style IPA did the trick for me. Four Generals is pretty okay, I guess. Overall a great atmosphere; open floor plan with some downright beautiful tables. Stop by the bathroom - there's an original jail cell door back there! You'll also get to walk past where all the brew action happens. They don't serve food, but you're more than welcome to bring something in from one of the many places that Renton has to offer. They also allow children, so if you enjoy partaking in adult beverages with the wee ones this is the place for you. If you like to keep the "adult" in your 21+ only beverages I'd go elsewhere. I love that the have Schilling Ciders on tap! I don't make it down to their taproom in Fremont often enough, it's nice to have a local place that has several different options. As for the beer? I'm kinda thinking that it's not for me, but I've only tried 2 so far. I tried the hefeweizen and the pale ale. The Hefe had a very unpleasant after taste and I'd definitely never drink it again. The pale ale was a lot better, but it's not something I'm rushing out to get again. One of those things that if my choices were water or pale ale I just might go with the pale ale, but I'm not seeking it out, either. These guys are already knocking it out of the park in one of the busier corners of downtown Renton (hustle and bustle are in short supply around here sometimes). They've opened up a nice little place that will do very well as a bar (and as a brewery) whether they ever sell many kegs elsewhere or not. It's clear they will quickly build a loyal local following. They have a little chair rail on the sidewalk so people can sit outside, and they roll up the doors to let the air in. Inside there are a few tables, and then a few stools at the bar. There are flat screens, probably tuned to the game, and behind this there's a tidy little brand-new brewhouse. There's a single unisex bathroom farther in the back. They're making a wide variety of ales and sours at this point already, though just a few beers overall--they're just widely separated in style categories, hence the variety. The people are super nice and the vibe is great. Beers are interesting enough, and prices are fair. Renton is already glad to have these guys. read more

I had to come up to Seattle last month for a wedding and baby shower w/my fiancee. Who would've knew my fiancee was ready to swindle me into helping set up the baby shower. She did. The baby shower was on 3rd Street in Renton. In a pissed off frenzy, I exploded out the baby shower yelling all types of curse words at my woman. I smoked a fat ass fatty in the back alley, and suddenly I'm not as mad anymore, because I'm sitting in this brewery called Four Generals. I ordered the 1st pint I seen. A Renton River IPA. And damn that beer was so good! The pint was so tasty! It was so good, I immediately ordered another one 20 minutes later. It had a nice, smooth, kind of citrus tint to it. While watching the game, a lady next to me recommended I try the West Coast IPA. So now lets pour pint number THREE with the West Coast IPA! That pint was a hearty, filling pint. I noticed the nice, stout flavor. I tasted the grains of the West Coast IPA and remembered how I wanted to order another pint because it was a completely different from the Renton River IPA, yet just as tasty. Sunndenly, my fiancee is grabbing me, notifying me the baby shower was about to get under way. As much as I wanted to order a FOURTH pint, I had to leave Four Generals to go to a baby shower. This joint has been tempting me for a couple of years since the first time I took my parents to Renton to antique. Old people sure like looking at old shit. I guess it's comforting while dealing with their mortality, knowing old things can endure on, and maybe they will too (shoulder shrug). Regardless, I spotted Four Generals from the second floor of the antique shop, and thought about ducking out on my parents, and grabbing a brew or two. Obviously, from the intro, I didn't, and its haunted me until recently. While in Renton this past weekend looking for El Burrito Loco (Spanish for The Crazy Burrito), I happened to park right across the street from the brewery. This was dumb luck cause the map on my phone fucked the fuck up the directions to the restaurant. Thanks Apple. After a quick look up to thank the big man upstairs for my fortuitous parking situation, I giddily floated across the street to peruse what Four Generals had to offer. The brewery is small. There's a bar, a few tables, and bar height seating along the right wall, and street. They have boardgames, and trivia night on Tuesdays. Its cozy, and was bustling this Saturday night. The menu is pretty small as well. They had six beers on tap that they brew, and another six from various outside breweries. With such a small menu I opted for a flight of all four of their normal beers, a Saison, Pilsner, Blonde, and Altbeer. Now, normally I'm a ride or die IPA guy, so I wasn't expecting much. The Saison, Pilsner, and Blonde have changed what I think of the three. They were beyond anything I've tasted in their respective styles. All three are a perfect summer beer on a hot day, light, and flavorful. Even better are the growler prices. Most were only $12, so be assured I'm going to be on my deck in the sun sipping one of the three aforementioned. They also have half pours which i appreciate when you want to sample everything...or get one more in you when can't finish another pint. You're welcome millennials. The other two beers they had on tap were sours, and both were excellent. One was dark, and the other "normal." You can buy those by the ounce. Which I thought was odd, but then again you only want a little of a sour, am I right? What do I know. I'm just a guy on Yelp exposing his unethical love of booze. If you're antiquing with the ex-roommates, and need a break, stop in. I can't say how surprising, and good this little brewery is. I dont know if I found this place searching yelp one day or I found it another way, but either way some how I heard about this place and I have had plans to visit for a while. While planning a hike I knew I wanted to visit a brewery, but didnt know which one. We settled on four generals as it was more or less on the way home and we didnt want to drive to seattle at 2p on a saturday. The location is near a barcade we had visited before... 8bit I believe, but that area has really seemed to grow up. On every corner around four generals I noticed something that looked like I should visit. A cupcake place, a toy store, a second hand store, some nerdy looking thing... we will have to visit on a day we are not wore out from a hike. We grabbed a flight a beer as is custom when visiting a new brewery. On our flight we had a pilsner, an altbier (german red), a hazy ipa, and the milk stout. All 4 beers were delicious. I would say my favorite was the milk stout. It had crazy good flavor and was so smooth. Our second favorite would probably be the altbier. It was described to us as a german red and it was absolutely amazing. Super rich flavor. In addition to the beer they gave us a small plate of pretzels and for some reason these were the best hard pretzels I have ever had. They had just enough flavor to make them delicious and stand out. Overall this was a solid craftbeer brewery in the heart of renton and we will definitely visit again. read more

Outstanding. A Renton gem. Beers true to style, and excellent variety! Make sure you ask which new beers are in the pipeline, and also read their beer menu for technical information. They have board games galore, so definitely a great place to get together with friends and family. Friendly, homestyle service from a small local family brewery; you won't be disappointed! They brew American and German style beers, true to their origin. The family actually lived in and spent time in Germany to get a great feel on how to reproduce some of the best beers in the world. My opinions of the selections I tried during my initial visit: The Hefe is impressive and distinctly German, with lots of authentic, bold clove (mid-range) and bubblegum (finish) flavors; The Schwartzbier has replaced Kostritzer as my go-to black lager (and it's cheaper than the import alternative) with a statisfyingly dry, dark roasted malt flavor profile; Northwest IPA is a standout winner amongst all the similar-tasting IPA's flooding the market. The English bitter has a glorious, smooth, nutty malt taste with a light hop profile that takes Newcastle and stands head and shoulders above it. They also serve Schilling Cider on tap and had two varieties available; pineapple passionfruit and blackberry pear. I did not get a chance to try either, but Schilling makes some of the best ciders in Western WA and are based out of Auburn, which I did not realize! I also learned that Four Generals and Schilling are good friends with each other which is a big reason why 4G offers their taps amongst their own beers. Their goal is to create their own beer-niche amongst the flood of breweries around the area, to which i say, mission accomplished! Also, I can't forget to mention other important facts: - The beers are extremely clean with high quality ingredients. Some of the purest-tasting beer I've had in some time. - The building is housed in Renton's old city hall and jail. The bathroom used to be the women's holding cell. They had to move the original iron door 90 degrees over for ADA compliance purposes, but it's still there. A piece of history! - They allow outside food, which is rare for a pub. Bring in a pizza or other favorite meal with you while you enjoy a few pints and some games! - It's a smaller venue, but there's still plenty of seating for most crowds. - Children under 21 are allowed inside. They have Sprite, root beer, pretzels and potato chips for snack purposes. - Animals are allowed, if I remember right; bring Fido in for a visit! read more
