Four Star was recommended to us by the kind folks at Stax (Museum of American Soul). It was a nice little walk from the museum on a Sunday afternoon, and exactly what we wanted. Part of me want's to give this less than 5-stars to make sure it doesn't become a victim of it's success-you know like when a great 'local' place gets so much business-you can't even get a table, or maybe even just starts rushing and ruins what made it special to begin with. That said, they deserve the 5 stars and it's definitely the best place I have eaten since Mrs. Wilkes in Savannah. God bless this amazing comfort (soul) food. SLAP YO' MOMMA GOOD! If you're looking for authentic soul food that your grandma would approve of, this place is a must stop! Don't be fooled by the exterior, the place may be small, but the flavor is far from it. You can't go wrong ordering anything off their menu. Every single thing is EXCELLENT! The fried chicken was juicy and flavorful, the catfish well-seasoned and fresh. Every item was fried fresh and served HOT. The side dishes were absolutely to die for. We opted for the turnip greens, macaroni and cheese, and yams... all the sides were phenomenal... even down to the cornbread. Not only was the food great, but the southern hospitality was even better. All staff made us feel like family. It was evident from the moment we walked through the front door, that this place was full of history and a staple in the Memphis community. All of the accolades it's received are very much deserved. I had the turkey and stuffing dinner with corn and yams, everything was good except for my corn. It tasted like it was cooked with the greens or in pickle juice, it was disgusting. Nothing about the corn was sweet or buttery. It was tasted like turnip greens corn. My husband had the country fried steak, and it was really good. I'd recommend that steak over the turkey dinner! Mash potatoes were good as well. That corn though you guys, it was so disgusting . Please please please keep closer eye on cross contaminating your sides with utensils or whatever. read more

I was fortunate enough recently to dine with a respected Memphis food critic /writer who made mention that most restaurant reviews are influenced more by the service than the actual quality of the food. I've taken that into account since that lunch, but, folks this one's based 100% on service, or a lack thereof. As I entered, I saw no signs to seat yourself, wait, etc. The 4 guys in front of me went and found a table, so I did also. A waitress - Michelle? came over and asked who seated me. I said nobody. She then explained why I should have waited to be seated... OK, perhaps I should have asked her why she didn't say that to the other group? So I ordered, sweat tea, turkey & dressing, turnip greens and black eyed peas. 4 Way is a meat & 2 place. They have the food already cooked at lunch. It only took 20 minutes to get my lunch because the waitress was inept. She disappeared for a long time, finally resurfaced, scooted back to the pickup area, where my plate had been waiting for... long enough for the food to get very cold. I took 2 bites, then got her to get me a to go plate. She didn't ask why, was my food good, bad, hot, cold. She knew. I paid and left. I'm looking forward to reheating this and having a HOT DINNER tonight as my COLD LUNCH sucked. Strange how terrible service can ruin a good restaurant. read more

When I got home, I had one small piece of liver with zero onions and zero gravy, my broccoli was raw and extra crispy with a dot of cheese, my cornbread was hard and crumbly and my disappointment was great. $14.00 for that? We were looking to experience and compare Tennessee home cooking to Louisiana and Texas. The service was Great! The greens(turnip and cabbage) were tasty and the smoothed pork chops are note worthy. The fried pork chop and chicken were fried a little too fast/hard. I did not get to taste the fried catfish but it looked really good. We do prefer our food with a little more flavor and some kick but the food was good. My trip to Memphis this spring was basically a food marathon -- as a former southerner with frequent barbeque and soul food cravings, I was seriously in heaven. But there's nothing better than to-die-for home cooking with an owner who will tell you some incredible stories about his childhood in Memphis, about the virtues of community, and about why his restaurant means the world to him. Despite the fact that our waiter (who was super nice, btw) gave us all the recommendations we asked for, our large group ended up ordering just about everything on the menu that day (the menu rotates daily) -- fried catfish, fried chicken, baked chicken, collard greens, northern beans, yams, you name it. All amazing. But I was definitely partial to the fried chicken -- juicy, tender, but with a fantastically satisfying crunch. YES. And don't you dare leave without having the peach cobbler...it would be a crime against your sweet tooth to deprive it of such a glorious southern comfort! read more

I was a tourist from Philadelphia. I had read an article in the NY Times that recommended this restaurant. I went for Sunday lunch. I was under-dressed. All the regulars had their best clothes on, apparently coming from church. My turkey and dressing platter was very good. Friendly staff. The owner chatted with me. This is my second visit at four way. The fist seemed to be much more enjoyable. I will chalk it up to the busy Sunday crowd. Let's start with the service. It left much to desired. I was greeted at the door, but told they would be back with me momentarily. After a 10 min wait and several others who came in after me being serviced, I was finally seated. Took another 7 min for waitress to arrive. I ordered the fried chicken, yams, and black-eyed peas. It came with a piece of soggy corn bread. From these reviews I was expecting better food. My macaroni and cheese looked like it came out of a Kraft box. I agree with the other reviewer that these chitlins are not the place to start. Deep fried hot dogs were also pretty "blah" and the okra was mushy and unappetizing. On the other hand, the service was good and the sweet tea was excellent. read more
