Came here with some friends on a Sunday morning and waited in line for 15-20 minutes to grab a couple pastries. Would recommend you come early since they tend to sell out in the afternoon. There is always a line but it moves fairly quickly. We tried the ham and manchego croissant, almond croissant, and lemon curd cake. Everything was delicious! Croissant layers were buttery and the flavors are everything you want in a pastry, whether it is sweet or savory. I was very excited to try Fournée Bakery after receiving several recommendations, as well as the smells wafting through the door and the line down the sidewalk. With that being said, the pastries somewhat missed the mark. The chocolate almond croissant was fine - I've definitely had flakier, more flavorful croissants. The chocolate was good quality but not evenly distributed, and the almond-ness was a bit lacking. The gougère was pretty much what you'd expect and didn't taste very fresh. The star of the show was a half loaf of spelt and sesame bread. Wow! Crusty exterior, great chew, plenty of black sesame seeds, and real substance (it's a hearty loaf!). Maybe it was an off day for them, and perhaps my expectations were a bit lofty, but I do plan to return and try more breads and pastries. read more

I don't know why the croissant here doesn't get more publicity. I just had maybe the best croissant I've ever had in the US. It was better than the one I had at Arsicault in SF which won Best of in SF. Also it was at least as good if not better than Rotha. Maybe croissants at any place are highly variable and sometimes you get an excellent one and sometimes you don't. But this one was fantastic read more

This is usually my favorite bakery but as of lately quality has gone down hill. There's always lines here which is fine and usually worth it (pro tip: call a day ahead and place your order) but lately it hasn't been hitting the mark. Come here maybe 3 times now and Ive gotten burnt croissants, and burnt bread. See attached photos for reference. I'm usually happy to pay their steep prices and wait in the long lines and circle the block constantly searching for parking to get their delish pastries, but I don't think I can come back if their quality control is this poor. This is a very late review, but I did want to write it because of the guava tart, which is not something I've seen at most other bakeries. I really liked the strongly sweet guava filling on the inside. The outside which is more of a crumbly pie crust with powdered sugar was good too, though less memorable than the guava itself. This bakery is a great spot if you're into classic French style pastries. The croissants are really flaky and buttery, and you can tell they're made with good ingredients. I also tried a tart and it was nicely balanced, not too sweet. The place is small and mostly for takeout, so seating is limited. There was a line when I went, but it moved fairly quickly. Great place. Parking isn't great but worth visiting. Ordering ahead is nice if you know what you like. Staff is helpful with ordering new items via phone. Quick Summary: - Loaves are tough crusts - Items sell out way before the store hours, so visit early - Seasonal pastries - Focused on bakery, coffee is not a high priority - There are some benches, tables and chairs along the building and some leading to the back. This bakery was in my highly anticipated places to go for the longest time, and this year was finally the time. I looked around the street, and on the entrance side there is a sidewalk parking, and on the other side of the building, there was a space -- although I'm not sure if it was available space. (The reason I say this is because the area is empty). We arrived somewhat early in the morning but 2 hours after their doors have opened. I recognized it immediately by the line out of the door. This bakery is located by the foot of a palace like hotel towering from the hill. The building is cozily squished between a Peet's coffee. It is hard to tell baked goods are sold from the line, so the choosing began once we were near the entrance. One one corner of the display case had seasonal pastries, and the other side had different croissants. Large loaves were placed behind the counter. At this time of hour, before noon if I recall, most of the pastries were sold out. It is a matter of luck and a race to get the favorite ones it seems. We seized a loaf, croissants, and a carrot cake. I don't remember clearly, but there was a sign near the cashier, that they only offer one type of coffee, drip. Coffee is not their highest priority, which can easily be redeemed by walking to the Peet's next door. The croissant is delicious. I like how airy the interior was along with its flaky layers. My other favorite, that we ordered on a whim, was the carrot cake. It was moist but not-so-dense. The cream cheese squeezed between the center and on the cake surface had the perfect level of sweet and slightly tart. Overall, a subtly sweet, pleasant cake. The loaf we might pass on the next visit however. I am on a search for the bread loaves with a crispy crust, but this one was the tough crust. A fan of many, but this one is not for us. read more

I've been coming to Fournée for the pastries (LOVE their canelé!), but this year, I decided to get the 6 inch Chocolate Toffee Crunch Cake for my husband's birthday. I couldn't find any pictures of it but after reading the description on the website, I decided that I need to eat this cake- no, wait, I meant that my husband needs this cake for his birthday. Lol Called to place the order easy and picking up went super smoothly as well. The cake had a very simple but elegant look. The outside of the cake was wrapped in acetate and the photo that I have here is what it looked like after taking it off. The cake was super moist, the creameux was delicious and we loved the crunchy toffee & pretzel pieces in the layers. What can't Fournée do? Not a damn thing. Will be back or more for sure. Maybe more like 4.5. Very delicious French pastry. I had a Paris Brest and almond chocolate croissant with friends. Both were very good. I'm interested to try their bread. Parking is decidedly bad and there aren't great coffee options. The croissants don't beat Rotha in Albany but probably the best in the nearby vicinity. read more

The Paris brest used to be an excellent pastry, and we had eaten it multiple times over the years. However, the same pastry was not anywhere near what we tasted previously when we were there last week; the cream was not smooth (tasted like cream cheese in a bagel instead of pastry cream) and it was way way too sweet! Just realized I forgot to finish this review from last year. The best panettone! And it was unique as well with the mix of fingered citron in it. The panettone was airy soft with good texture, and with the mix of fingered citron, golden raisins, candied oranges, and chocolate, it was delicious! Solid bakery with great sweet and savory options in the Oakland/ Berkeley Area. Stopped by here with my girlfriend this in the middle of last month while house sitting for a friend in Oakland. When we arrived there was a bit of a line but we were able to get inside within 10-15 minutes. We had quite a large order (we were picking up things for friends and family) and the staff at the bakery quickly and efficiently got everything together. For our order we had (long list coming): 2x Ham and Manchego Croissant 1x Egg and Ham Croissant 1x Seasonal Veggie Croissant 1x Paris Brest 1x Fougasse 1x Baguette 1x Cannelé The items I tried were fantastic. The Paris Brest was a great blend of textures (creamy, crispy) and the Ham and Egg croissant was quite good. Parts of the ham got extra crispy which gave a nice crunch - a little bit of sriracha on top brought it all together. The Fougasse was the standout for me - the bread had just had a perfect happy medium crunchiness to chewiness and the flavors of herbs, olives and duck fat combining together was incredible. By itself, or with a soup, this bread is definitely one for the books. All in all, Fournée is a great pastry/ bakery option in Oakland. I'd visit back here in a heartbeat if I lived closer and I'd even go out of my way to come out here more frequently from San Francisco. 5/5 read more

A cute little bakery in Berkeley with a variety of yummy and fresh pastries! I recommend coming here earlier in the day to get their popular pastries. We ordered the paris brest, which had crispy layers and covered flakes. The flavored cream had subtle taste of lemon. It had caramel and hazelnut in the cream, so overall was very sweet. We also ordered the pain au chocolat. This was my favorite out of the 2. It was soft to bite into with multiple thin, crispy layers on top. There was dark chocolate inside was not as creamy as ive hoped, but maybe wouldve been better if I ate it immediately after buying it. We also ordered the lorraine quiche. It had a good balance with the sweet pastries, containing vegetables and ham mixed inside. Overall, it tasted like butter and egg. The crust was soft and crunchy! read more

Terrible breads! Costco croissants! Yuck!!! I thought I was buying something truly special with the $9 duck fat fougasse but the baker was so heavy handed with the salt that it was inedible. I had to throw it away. The croissant was also very disappointing. They tasted like Costco croissants. They do sell out toward the end of the day. Pretty much everything here is heavenly-- the baguette, the sourdough bread, the ham & manchego croissant, the pain au chocolat, ham & egg croissant, the seasonal veggie croissant, and the seasonal scone. However, I'm not a big fan of the sandwiches (which they have on weekdays) or the cheese rolls which I know is a hot take. The staff is very nice. We decided to try a few other items instead since they have a variety of baked goods, pastries, sandwiches, etc. Chocolate Almond Croissant ($4.75): The croissant wasn't as flaky as I liked and there was barely any chocolate filling in it. It was still decent, but I think there are better croissants in the Bay Area. Cheese Roll ($3.50): This was a dough with gruyere, manchego, and cubeb pepper. The bread was light and not dry at all, but I didn't get too much of the cheese flavor other than the crust on the outside. Lorraine Quiche ($5.25): The slice of quiche was cold! I wish they had warmed it up because it tasted like it was taken straight out of the fridge. The flavor and texture seemed okay, but the cold temperature of it made it hard to eat. Overall, I wasn't too impressed with the items so far, but I might come back again to try their well known ham and egg croissant! read more

You like perfectly baked pastries....I mean perfectly baked...pastries in Berkeley? If you do, this is it...not even close. There is a 15 minute wait if you get there when it opens but don't let that dissuade you...this place is well worth the wait. As soon as you walk in you are hit with the smell. This is like a Philly cheesesteak...know what you want and don't browse..while ordering. As for the food...the fougasse is incredible. Might be my favorite anywhere in the world. The cheese bread, croissants (ham and cheese or plain) are incredible. The desserts look incredible too but did not try them...but they were clearly flying. Run...don't walk to this place and go early...it's easily the best in Berkeley and maybe Northern California. read more

I really enjoy this bakery. It's situated right next to the Clermont Hotel and features a cute outdoor area shared with several other small businesses. They don't offer indoor seating, but the outdoor is so pleasant even on sunny winter day. My favorites are their plain and almond croissants. This weekend, I tried their scones for the first time, but they were disappointingly dry and lacked exciting flavor. I also had a plain croissant, which was unexpectedly dry. This place makes the absolute BEST Fougasse! It is olive-y the duck fat it's made with makes it, crisp, light, and perfectly moist. The crusty outside is lightly salted to perfection. Their pastries are also exquisite, I haven't had anything I didn't like, but I ALWAYS come for the Fougasse! Fournee often has a very long line, but some random weekend mornings, there's no line...and you should definitely jump on the opportunity! The line can be quite long, around the corner which can be quite a wait. My favorites are the cheese bread, croissant, chocolate croissant and ham and cheese croissant....but there are also tons of other delicious goodies there; I just have to stop myself from ordering everything. They also have a bunch of really delicious desserts in the front case which I haven't had a chance to try. read more
