Last week I visited the resteraunt for my daughter's birthday. Although we went to another restaurant earlier that evening for happy hour, my daughter was so excited to try Fraîche because of the recent TikTok buzz. Although I wasn't hungry, I still decided to try something on the menu because the food on the restaurant's website looked AMAZING! Unfortunately, I was disappointed. I ordered the gumbo and it didn't even have the fried okra in it as described on the menu! When I asked the waitress (who was wonderful) about it, she talked to the chef, then brought fried okra on the side instead of remaking the dish!! When I expressed my dissatisfaction and asked to be accommodated, I was told it wasn't possible. In addition, my daughter complained of her drinks being watered-down, although aesthetically pleasing. Simply put a restaurant that cares! I made a special trip and went opening night due to following Matt on social media for a few years. From a distance he has always been personable, helpful, and fostered community. I've obtained all his products from cookbooks, kitchenware, seasonings, cooking classes, etc. The one thing that I haven't tried yet was his actual cooking so I went to give it a shot. What I got was far more than I bargained for. Fraiche is bigger than the chef. The restaurant is ran by community. The hostess was welcoming, my waitress was very personable, what surprised me the most is I was CONSTANTLY checked on by multiple members of the wait staff and not in a negative or annoying way. You do NOT feel ignored! Many places can provide good food, not many places provide elite service, let alone in a new restaurant. The synchronous culture they've curated out the gate is to be applauded. Moving to the food... BRUH! I am as picky as it gets when it comes to food and there hasn't been one place I've been where I've liked everything I've had. That streak ended yesterday! EVERY SINGLE DISH WAS A HIT! NO EXAGGERATION! I ordered: Chicken wings - seasoned and fried to perfection. Crispy, hot, juicy, flavorful. I had them dry and you can add buffalo or mumbo sauce and it adds another element. The chicken as a stand alone is a star, the sauce is a bonus. Honey butter cornbread- this was the one dish I thought wasn't going to like because the first bite didn't resonate with me. It had delayed flavor lol. Oh buddy it when it hits, it's comes THROUGH! It is made with real corn and has a semi firm/spongy texture that absorbs the honey butter into its nooks and crannies and that's where the flavor resides! That cornbread is made with love! Mac and Cheese - this was my 1/2 of my litmus test. Mac n Cheese can either make or break a dining experience for me. I don't like overly creamy/saucy Mac n cheese... I need grandma's thanksgiving style where the noodles are held together by a thick cheese. It presented well as it had a nice crust on top. When I broke the seal I was a little skeptical because it looked a tad runny, that first bite shut me right on up! I immediately said oh, they ain't come to play! So much flavor in each spoonful, a delight in every bite! Steak Frites - a prime NY Strip with Truffle fries. This was the second half of my litmus test as my initial follow came from Matt's ability to make steaks. They've always looked so good and as a result over the past 5 years I've cultivated my ability to make a damn good steak and am very critical of steaks when I eat out and I do... A LOT! It presents pre sliced with a compound butter, a beautiful charred crust which is VERY important for me and a coarse salt dusting which cannot be understated how much it elevates the meat. Beautifully cooked medium per request and the fries were fried well. They had a crispy exterior and soft interior with a drizzle of truffle on top. The steak was tender and you tasted the char in every bite! I stopped talking after my first bite and I'm not sure I breathed at all until I finished it lol. At this point I was satisfied with my dining experience however I traveled from Dallas to DC to try the restaurant so I attacked the menu some more lol. I then ordered... Fried Snapper- this was where I felt I might have done too much lol. The portion is huge! Lmao. It's served over red beans and rice. The best thing about this dish is the preparation of it. They fillet the fish and serve it to you in nugget form so you don't have to fight with the bones which is so helpful however they deep fry the entire body of the fish and stuff for the lack of a better term the nuggets into the body. It is drizzled in mumbo sauce which adds a nice balance to the breading as it's light salted and the sauce gives it a savory component. It's served with red, green, and yellow peppers as a garnish. Lamb Chops - 4 perfectly seared medium cooked chops seasoned to perfection over a bed of the most liveliest garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus you will taste. Every bite makes u involuntarily close your eyes. I was sold! I didn't get to try the Cornish hen, garlic noodles, or oxtail meatballs but they are the next on my list as I will be returning in the near future to finish what I started! I came to support Matt but I cannot and will not diminish how the staff from top to bottom! The kitchen cooks, the wait staff, management, owners, hostess. SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT I've been following this guy on social media for a while admiring his food and recipes. I was so excited when the restaurant opened. I honestly got a bad vibe when I entered the building. There was a guy complaining because he had multiple items missing from his pickup order. I had family in from out to town and had really talked this place up. This is what we ordered Oxtail Meatballs.... came out warm to cold and hard. No one liked them Deviled Eggs minus caviar... no seasoning and whatever was on top I wouldn't call chicken. It was so small it felt like a crumb Mumbo Chicken Wings.... cooked fast and barely done. The sauce had no flavor Lamb Chops not flavorful and dry Steak.... decent but came out well done and we asked for medium Gumbo.... I was excited because I've seen you make it via IG multiple times and omg it was horrible. No creole/Cajun seasoning, no gumbo file, no bay leaf flavor. It tasted like a seafood in an unseasoned dark gravy The Rockfish was actually good. Fried to perfection and seasoned well. This was my first time visiting this restaurant, and unfortunately, it will be my last. My family and I waited over 15 minutes with only one menu for four people. After some time, we were finally given water glasses, but there was still no real attention from our server. Our server seemed more interested in socializing with coworkers than taking our orders or checking on us. After waiting and feeling overlooked, we eventually decided to walk out. So let me start this review by stating that I follow the owner's food channel, so when I saw he was opening a restaurant, I had to check it out. I am so glad I did. The atmosphere was good, but because it was a soft opening, things were still being handled, but it didn't distract from the overall experience. The service: 10/10 From the time my party and I walked in, we were greeted and sat immediately (we did have a reservation). The waitress was awesome, and the co owner of the restaurant was awesome. The food: 10/10 While I did not expect anything less from a restaurant by Mr. Make it Happen, it's another thing to experience it firsthand. My dinner companions and I were thoroughly impressed by each dish, starting with the appetizers and ending with dessert. The price: For amazing food, it was worth the price tag. I was really looking forward to this experience and it didn't quite match my expectations unfortunately. A spur of the moment date night sparked the long awaited Fraiche visit. Space like a lot of Dc restaurants was very small but on this day wasn't packed. The food wasn't really as great as I expected oxtail meat balls was okay crust was kinda hard, the crab chowder on the other hand had good flavor my only quarrel was with the fact that it was luke by the time they server finally brought it out. The sticky ribs were sweet and taste something I can recommend that can't miss if ordered. The gumbo was rich and filled with crab and shrimp I won't complain. The cornbread was a twister for me but it really was a nice blend to sweet and savory. All in all not the best experience and a little on the pricey side. I've seen mixed reviews on Fraîche. Like the drinks were premixed which had me confused because why would a restaurant with a full bar be serving patrons only premixed drinks?! However that wasn't the case, at least not when me and my friends went to celebrate a friend's birthday. We sat at the bar for happy hour until our reservations and ordered a couple drinks. They were not premixed and were good. One of the chefs, Mr. Make It Happen on IG actually came up and he greeted us and smiled for my picture lol! Finally we headed to the table for dinner. Great appetizers enjoyed the sticky ribs and the unique spin on their Caesar salad. Any opportunity to get a caesar I'll always get it. Definitely one of my favs! The salmon risotto, garlic noodles with shrimp were A+++. The steak & frites were also good but pretty standard! The Mac and cheese honestly looked better than it tasted. Creamy and cheesy but lacking some flavor and umph. Service was great, our waitress' name was Blue and she was awesome. Next time I'll try the lamb chops and some more drinks. read more

I recently visited Fraîche with four friends to celebrate a promotion. Upon arrival, the hostess asked if we were celebrating anything, and I mentioned the promotion. However, when I pointed out that our table had noticeable sticky spills and requested it be cleaned, she rolled her eyes before asking the waitress to wipe it down again. Thankfully, the waitress approached with a positive attitude and quickly took care of it. Shortly after, one friend arrived and asked the hostess if there was a Happy Hour menu--especially since signage outside advertised Happy Hour and 15% off cocktails. She abruptly told him it was only available at the bar, dismissing him without explanation. I went to the bar myself and ordered the Mumbo wings and a dozen oysters. After paying my tab--including the 20% service charge--the bartender kindly let me know she'd bring the food to our table, which I appreciated. At no point was there any indication that this would be an issue. Unfortunately, the experience took a sharp turn when the manager approached our table while I was mid-meal. Without any introduction or basic courtesy, he abruptly said, "Y'all can't do that," scolding us for ordering Happy Hour items at the bar and bringing them to our reserved table. He claimed we were "taking money away from the server," which was both confusing and accusatory. I calmly explained that the bartender had asked if the food was for "here or to-go" and offered to bring it over herself. My friend also chimed in to point out that the policy hadn't been made clear to us at any point. The manager snapped back that "it's all over the menus"--the same menus we were never given. We had a full reservation, and everyone in our party intended to order entrées and drinks. If there is a specific policy in place, it should be communicated clearly and respectfully--not through a confrontational tone and vague accusations. The manager's behavior was unnecessarily abrasive and unprofessional. To make matters worse, he remarked that he would "allow the price to remain the same," as though he had the authority to retroactively alter charges on my card. To add to the discomfort, while another friend was at the bar ordering drinks for herself and another guest. As she returned to the table, the manager loudly whispered to the bartender and commented, "Look, she's walking off with the drink." She had to clarify that she had just paid for those drinks. The bartender appeared visibly embarrassed by the manager's behavior. The entire interaction left a sour impression and completely overshadowed what was meant to be a celebratory evening. Our Food Ratings: Mumbo Wings - Over-fried (not requested), hard. Honestly, better wings at local pool halls. Gumbo - Flavorful broth, but only four shrimp left it underwhelming. Just rice, broth and four shrimp. I suggest Miss Toya's or Jasper's instead. Oysters - Small but decent. Lamb Chops - Good flavor, cooked well. Steak Frites - Seasoned and cooked properly. Butter bought out 20min after the entree. Brussels Sprouts - Perfect Five-Cheese Macaroni - Grainy, lacked flavor or cohesion. We sent it back. Cornbread - Tasted stale despite being soaked in honey. Salmon & Garlic Noodles - Delicious and well-prepared. In summary, while the bartender and waitress offered decent service. I suggest the waitress start writing orders down, she rang in the wrong food twice. The manager's conduct was deeply unprofessional. He was visibly agitated, wearing a flannel shirt in 90-degree weather, and we even observed him arguing with other patrons during our visit. As longtime fans of Mr. Make It Happen, this experience did not reflect the quality, hospitality, or professionalism associated with his brand. We were excited to support this establishment, but unfortunately, the service and inconsistency in food quality left us disappointed. We won't be back. read more

We went to the restaurant on November 29, @ 6pm. I took a while to let the experience sink in so I can be honest and not reflexive. My bestie found Mr Make It Happen on YouTube and did some research on him. He loved the food he was preparing so much that he bought a book for me and him. We even used his collard greens and yams recipe for Thanksgiving. They came out delicious, so we said," Let's try the restaurant." We make reservations and were really excited. Upon arrival we were underwhelmed with the design, which wasn't a big deal since we came for the food. Two of our group of 4 arrived early and was seated and given 2 menus for a table of 4. Once the other two arrived and completed our party, we must have sat there at least 10 minutes before the waiter made a visit. He took our drink order. They had NO BEER options and the drinks took another 10-15mins to get. The waiter never came back with two more menus. So, finally the waiter comes over and take our food order, he stated that their POS was down. That should have been a problem, just go old school and write it down. That's what they did. My bestie asked for a Cesar salad. It came out in about 3 minutes. It had no flavor and weak dressing. I ordered the snapper, which was delicious except the beans and rice and as not hot. The other two dishes were perfect (hen and branzino). Still no check in by waiter. Once a lady with a phone earpiece walked by, asking if everything things was ok. I shit you not, she didn't slow down for a response. If she would have went any faster I would have gotten whiplash. There is no parking so you have to find parking or use the supermarket parking lot about a block away( no biggie) except they don't validate. No parking and no validation, this will greatly affect the business growth. We were so let down, especially since we drove an hour (Ashburn) to have a great experience. Mr. Make It Happen... what happened? I visited the restaurant for my two-year anniversary, and while there were definitely some highlights, a few things fell short of the expectations I had especially as someone who cooks many of your recipes at home and is a big fan. The host greeted us warmly and seated us right away. The vibe inside was beautiful, and our server, Noor, was wonderful. We could tell the restaurant had another event going on, so the wait for our food was a bit longer than expected understandable for a newer establishment. We ordered the wings with dry rub and Mumbo sauce on the side. The wings themselves were cooked perfectly, though the Mumbo sauce leaned a bit too sweet for my taste. I chose the Steak Frites but substituted the fries with mac and cheese. The presentation was great, but the flavor could've used a touch more seasoning, which surprised me since I rarely add salt to my food. We also tried the lamb chops, which were okay, and the Honey Butter Cornbread, which could've used a little more honey or maybe a drizzle to tie it together. Since it was our anniversary, I thought we might receive a small complimentary dessert, but we didn't though that's not a major issue. It was an early Thursday evening and we basically had our pick of table. Our server Audemay (sp) was nice although he did seem either nervous or uncertain. For appetizers we ordered the oxtail meatballs, crispy chicken wings w/ mambo sauce, charbroiled and oysters on the half shell. For all the hype, I found the oxtail meatballs unimpressive. They could've been anything. The oxtail flavor was nonexistent. The crispy chicken wings were more like over cooked and there was no seasoning, no flavor or sauce to speak of, more like a glaze. The oysters on the half shell were just eh but the charbroiled oysters saved the day. They were delicious and very flavorful. The entrees were worth the trip. The garlic noodles and salmon was exceptional and all the flavor that was missing from the apps was made up in this dish. The lamb was tender, the mashed potatoes were creamy. I didn't try the gumbo but the others at my table liked it. The honey cornbread was also a disappointment to me. It was heavy with honey and lost the cornbread taste. The dessert was another high point, the cheesecake was tasty and the bread pudding either butterscotch sauce was fantastic. I loved it. The ambiance was nice, a little cold but it had nice lighting and music however the more the place filled up, the louder the music got. I felt like I was shouting. I LOVE YELP REVIEWERS!! It is only because of reading the reviews did I know exactly where the restaurant was. I sat in the car laughing at people walking by it several times and standing in front of H & R Block wondering where they went wrong :) I would suggest making a reservation; when I arrived at 4:45pm (45 minutes after they opened) there were already nine (9) different parties seated. They have a variety of seating options, all with their own limitations. The booths are up two (2) small stairs (keep this in mind if drinking, got new heels, wear a shoe size over 8 or if mobility is an issue), the floor tables are close together but have cushions on the seats (you will see why I mention this in a minute), but the tables are so close you may get bumped like I did (it was an accident so stay EASY!). There are also wall seats like at Chipotle that hard wood, no cushion, straight back type seat so pick your poison :( Yelp was also right about the hit and miss of the dishes. For appetizers I ordered the oxtail meatballs, they were delicious and perfect for 1 person don't be discouraged by the size YOU CAN DO IT!! The She Crab soup was so salty I took 2 sips (initial taste and the second "this can't be right" taste) put that to the side because I'm not going into salt shock for nobody. Since the soup was a complete fail I got the Charbroiled Oysters (based off yelp reviews and because the waiter said the Caesar Salad was for two (2) people). Now I am a seafood lover but Oysters are really not my jam but they were A+ like I might be a oyster person after those; well at least at Fraiche. Entrees were Lamb Chops and Golden Gate Noodles. The noodles were perfectly cooked and flavorful. I forgot to get the red pepper flakes taken off because I am not a spice person but you couldn't tell because they were elevating the dish and fit so perfectly that it came together without reaching for water; perfection. The lamb was tender and buttery soft without worrying about oil/juice getting on your clothes. There were some spots with too much salt but the dish was so good that you overlooked it, yes even for the price and spots with too much salt it was still that good. The Chef and unbeknownst to me internet personality (sorry i was born in the 1900's) came out of the kitchen and went to some of the booths to speak to people. Now I'm not sure if the booth occupants requested it or they had an issue or he just wanted to say Hi but that happened if you are interested :) 90's music will have you swaying and singing (but keep that singing in your head please). I'm going back. While it was not cheap or perfect; it was good enough to try again without hesitation and I already know what I'm ordering: Charbroiled Oysters, Golden Gate Noodles and Grilled Branzino. From the moment I called (I wish I remembered her name) she made sure to not only accommodate my family and but called back to let us know about the waitlist and seating availability. Everything was amazing and full of flavor. The ambiance and vibe is everything and not only is the foot bomb yall but the customer service is top notch ! The service is beyond amazing and we enjoyed our dinner throughly ! What an amazing experience ! From watching YouTube videos and copying the recipes to now being about to dine in the establishment by one of my fav YT Chef's ! We sat in a comfortable section of the restaurant near the window, and we were the first customers that afternoon, around 4pm. We started out with appetizers. The Cajun Mussels were excellent! It had an awesome mild-spicy broth with bits of andouille sausage and tomato. Wow - and it came with crunchy toast points to sop in that yummy broth. Superb! Next we tried the Oxtail Meatballs, which the three big ones were placed above a brown puree sauce almost like a bbq sauce, with grated Parmesan and chives. Another flavorful choice! Then we tried the Sticky Ribs -- delicious meaty ribs with a sweet smokey bbq sauce topped with crispy fried shallots. Excellent! We also ordered a side of grilled asparagus because we thought we should have a vegetable to balance. That was perfect! Our server was attentive and she kept our waters filled and brought us more toast points upon asking for that yummy mussel broth. For dessert we shared a crème brûlée and what a way to end this light dinner. The food was excellent and looking forward to coming back to try more on this menu! During our visit, they didn't serve any hot beverages as my friend wanted to order a coffee or tea to go with the dessert. But we were informed that the hot beverages would be served there soon. Establishment- 1. When you walk in where the receptionist desk is, there is a black curtain that looks very weird/unprofessional. The receptionist was not at the desk initially but came from behind the black curtain while on the phone. I assume she was talking to a customer. After seating, she proceeds to lean on the receptionist desk. I know there is something she could be doing other, like wiping down menus or sweeping up crumbs). 2. The restaurant is clean for the most part but could be better. The floor is black so you can see EVERYTHING. There were crumbs on multiple parts of the floor. 3. The menu was dirty. There was only 1 seated customer when I arrived, so there is no excuse for uncleanliness. 4. Music - nice selection of music. Volume was nice and you could actually hear the music and hear your conversations at the same time. 5. The utensils were very clean which is a pet peeve of mine and I don't normally eat with restaurant utensils because they are always dirty. 6. Server - KK was super nice and very knowledgeable of the menu. She was very patient as I really didn't know what I wanted. She checked on me numerous times to see if I needed anything. Food - 1. Oxtail meatballs - came very quickly (less than 5 minutes) so obviously not made to order and am wondering how long ago they were made. They were warm, not hot. Too much of the brown stew reduction sauce. It was a little too sweet. A drizzle on the top of the meatballs would have been better instead of drowning it in the sauce. There was a lot of oxtail meatballs though. Would not order again. 4/10 2. Golden Gate Noodles (garlic noodles) with lamb chops. Came very hot, unlike the oxtail meatballs. Noodles were sweet. Too sweet if I must say so. 6.5/10 3. Lamb chops had too much fat. More fat than meat. Lacks seasoning. The chops were cooked to my liking (medium well). 5/10 4. 5 cheese Mac - for it to be a side, the portion size is huge. It was extremely oily, so much so that you could taste the oily butter. Other than the oily butter/cheese, it had no other flavor. Definitely not a fan and would definitely not order or recommend. 1/10. 5. Butterscotch Bread Pudding - temperature was nice and warm. It must have sat a little too long before it was brought out to me because my ice cream had melted quite a bit. It had just the right amount of sweetness. 8.5/10 Price - 1. For the most part, I think it was overpriced. They also add a 20% service fee to all checks regardless of the number in your party. 10% is given to the service workers (I am thinking this includes bus boys/dishwashers because they did come around to fill drinks and remove plates) and 10% is used to help pay for staff costs such as base wages. You may choose to leave an extra tip. I paid this much to eat at Gordon Ramsey's Hell Kitchen in Las Vegas and that was a 5 star restaurant all around. Final thoughts - 1. Presentation was great for all dishes but I was expecting more in terms of better tasting food. 2. Would I visit again? No. Not only because I was not impressed with the taste of the food but I don't like how the 20% service fee is distributed. If the entire 20% when to the servers and bus boys, I wouldn't have a problem with that. read more

Fraîche is a new restaurant but the food is anything but! You have to order the oxtail meatballs, it's nothing like them and the flavor is chefs kiss. The service was a little slow but I did go at 8:30pm and every table was occupied. The food came out hot and fresh though. First time trying Fraîche, and it was absolutely AMAZING 10/10! From the wait time to customer service and food quality, everything was excellent. A great touch was the owner personally introducing himself. Our bartender and server, Mark, was phenomenal attentive, energetic, and provided top-notch service. I promised myself I would start to leave more restaurant reviews, especially great ones in my city. I had the pleasure of dining at Fraiche, and I can confidently say it was one of the most memorable meals I've had in a long time. From start to finish, everything about this experience was first-class. I started with an Old Fashioned, and it was exceptional, perfectly balanced, smooth, and clearly made with attention to detail, thanks to the bartender Rachel. But It set the tone for what was to come. So For dinner, I went with the whole snapper, and it was crisp and tender, and packed with flavor, with the added mumbo sauce. 10/10 will order again. It was presented beautifully with chunks of fish in the center of the plate. I also tried the steak frites, medium done ofcourse, which did not disappoint. The steak was juicy and well-seasoned. We also added the honey cornbread. It def was a standout, it was warm, sweet, and will melt in your mouth each bite. And dessert? Listen, the bread pudding was rich, decadent, and the perfect way to end the night. It had that homemade warmth, with a refined twist that took it to the next level. The atmosphere was elegant yet welcoming, and the service was top-tier, and attentive without being overbearing. Fraiche is the kind of place that leaves an impression. Came to Fraîche for my sister's birthday and left disappointed. I noted in the reservation that it was a celebration, we'd need a toddler seat, and an accessible table, as we celebrate my sisters birthday; none of that was acknowledged. Our server was kind, but entrées came out minutes apart, and my father's arrived when the rest of us were halfway through. He got a glass of champagne as an apology, but the gesture felt hollow. Our second round of drinks took 30+ minutes, arriving after plates were cleared. Management never addressed the delays, just a check with 20% gratuity. Most dishes (red snapper, lamb chops, oxtail meatballs, etc.) were good but not memorable. For the price and hype, the experience lacked care and coordination. Thanks, but no thanks. read more

The oxtail meatballs were something special!! I assumed it would be a little oxtail meat with filler -- I am so happy to report it's all oxtail meat and they are scrumptious! For dinner I got the garlic noodles with the most tender short ribs I have had in my life! My husband got the whole bird, the skin was crispy and the meat was moist, it came with a side of broccolini and Mac and cheese. Which was creamy with an amazing cheese pull but surprisingly light. I went for my partner's birthday and though the French onion soup and charbroiled oysters were absolute standouts we were a bit disappointed because we had to share a table with other diners which was not communicated prior to seating. It seemed a bit disjointed as we did note there were some parties of two alone at the same size booth we had to share. We were just surprised since it was a birthday dinner and expected a bit more intimacy. The steak was delicious and you could taste the truffle on the fries- be warned some can be salty but oh so good! The snapper was good but it's largely for presentation since they cut the meat off the bone (which some do prefer!) so the fish nuggets a bit dry but we still enjoyed. Overall we're happy we went but for us we think the apps are more standouts/more value than the main courses. It was also very hot in there but that may have been due to the changing temperature since it was surprisingly in the 50s here. read more
