    Steak frites

Went to Steak Frites for dinner with a friend and had an overall nice experience. The atmosphere strikes a great balance, intimate, yet fun and inviting. It was also pretty cool to see the food being prepared right there in front of us. We ordered a bottle of wine to share and went with the prix fixe menu. Everything was plated beautifully. The meal started with bread and a salad. I'm not usually a salad person, but it was fresh and surprisingly good. For the main course, we both ordered our steaks medium rare. My friend's came out perfectly, but mine leaned overcooked, likely because of the at-the-table open flame. The fries, however, were excellent, crispy and seasoned just right. I just wish I enjoyed my steak more because that's really the centerpiece of the meal. Personally, I don't think the open flame gimmick adds much, and I'd rather have my steak cooked precisely. On the plus side, the cocktails were delicious, and I liked that there's a full bar in the back room if you want to hang out longer. Service was fantastic, everyone was welcoming, attentive, and kind. All in all, a solid spot with great service and drinks, but the steak itself (ironically) didn't quite hit the mark for me.

The food is super delicious and a great value, especially considering how beef and dairy prices have shot up the past year or so. We had just had steak picanha at Cana last week and I much prefer the steak at Steak Frittes. I would have loved to order the dessert but we were so full! I will say it seems like the staff is stretched thin, my waiter was acting as a host and covering tables inside and outside on the patio. Luckily we were not in a rush and almost enjoyed the slower service. Perhaps a true European experience. I hope fondue comes back in the winter! We will for sure be back for that!

The steak is served over a burner, which melts the rich butter layer. Yum!

What a hidden gem! I had time to kill before an event, so I went for the Prix Fixe of bread, salad, and steak with shoestring fries. I enjoyed the fresh baguette and salad. The main course knocked my socks off! Tender and flavorful, with the right amount of course salt on top. The servers were friendly and prompt, and the vibe was relaxed and somewhat rustic. I would love to eat here again. The food is remarkable and beats out much pricier establishments.

This restaurant specializes in Steak Frites and was very good. The presentation was excellent and the food was excellent. The drinks were also very good. I went with my wife on a Friday night date night. Don't come without making a reservation. It was definitely worth it. You have to park down the street if you're lucky enough to find parking or you can pay for parking a block or 2 away and walk. I'd recommend it if you live steak frites, good drinks and trying new restaurants.

Came in for dinner with my husband on Friday night. The food was great they have a prefix menu which included bread & butter, salad, steak and fries. We also ordered the burrata appetizer which was also delicious. My husband ordered the lavender gin sour which he loved and I had the Provence non alcoholic drink that I really enjoyed. Service was ok,quick but not the most pleasant wait staff. It could have been better but I will definitely be back to bring friends to check it out.

Really great food and service especially during H street festival with about 150k people outside. I'm definitely looking forward to going back. I forgot, I love the private seating.

Please just go to Medium Rare! I was excited to try this new venture by the Stable folks and it is a massive fail on every level and the most disappointing meal/dining experience I've had in a long time. I was with two others who also felt this way. Let's begin with just the food. Even taking into account just food this establishment would not get above 3 stars being kind ( I usually lean kind, if you look at my other reviews). The steaks are under seasoned and while MIGHT come out at the temp you order they are put over an open flame on a ceramic plate slathered in soft butter. I am assuming the reason they don't season the steak is because the butter should melt and flavor it, but I assure you this did not happen. Also, if you have any common sense you have figured out that your steak continues to cook while on this flame and becomes well done very quickly. The cut of steak is mostly gristle and extremely poor quality cut, at least all of ours were. I did read an article in the Washingtonian (I believe) where the journalist flat out asked why people should pay 10 dollars more than going to Medium Rare and the response was cause they would be using better quality everything. This is not true at all. Everything was sub par ..... aside from the French fries. The French fries are why I am giving the one star. As for service. Server was fine, not very friendly or overly attentive. Here is where they lose another star. My steak placed on a ceramic plate over an open flame .... Remember that? Well it started boiling the butter burning me and then the plate completely burst and broke. Server came running in to turn off the flame. Now not sure if this was something she was meant to do before it broke and just forgot or they are total idiots and didn't get high enough heat resistant plates. Either way the manager or owner then comes in and apologizes and then has the friggin nerve to ask me if I wanted a replacement steak?!!!! You mean the steak that exploded with 80% still on the plate? Yes, I would like it. Then when the bill came and I saw that it wasn't comped or any sort of effort made to rectify a miserable time was just astounded. I have worked in the service industry before for years and there is a way to handle situations like this and this was not it at all. So like I said just go to Medium Rare. I've never had a bad meal there and it was 10 bucks less. Even if your service is great at Steak Frites, your meal still won't be anything special

Shoestring fries from the prix fixe menu (served with mayo & ketchup) and a double order of the steak

The prix fixe menu at Steak Frites is a new favorite for me. This place is the perfect spot for a date, a casual family dinner, or something a little fancier for out of town visitors. So few restaurants can manage that! The bread course is perfect (they bake it fresh!), and the salad is light and bright. I think the dressing could've used a bit more acid -- it just tasted like olive oil, so one star off for that course. The steak is served medium rare over a small flame in a bath of the most DELICIOUS herb butter. It comes with crispy, perfectly salted shoestring fries. They'll cook your steak at a different temperature if you want that, but you can also just keep it on the plate over the flame until it cooks to your preferred temp. The drink menu is pretty extensive, and there's a variety of mimosas available for brunch as well. Service is friendly and prompt -- we were never without a refill or wondering how to contact our waiter. The artwork is also a plus. Really interesting pieces all over the restaurant, all available for purchase. I'll definitely be back and might buy some art while I'm at it.

The server said their chicken liver pate was made with bell peppers after I told him my food allergies. Never heard of such and I've eaten pate in many places including France. I then asked about the smoked salmon "with traditional condiments." The server informed me that the "traditional condiments" consisted of, and I quote, "lemon and oil". Is this a french restaurant or not?!? Moving on . . the steak was just ok. It was swimming in some of kind butter that lent nothing to its flavor. The shoestring fries were the best thing on the table. My dinner partner said her burger was bland and no amount of mayo or mustard helped it. She asked for raw and grilled onions on it. It came out with no raw onions and the cooked onions were thin and battered like onion rings. If it hadn't been for the "people watching" on H Street during Pride ‍weekend, this place would have been a complete disappointment.

We enjoyed the ambiance and service. Bread and butter, salad, and fries were delicious. For a place that specializes in their steaks, I was disappointed in the cook, taste, and quality.

My date found this gem on TikTok and it became the second stop on my birthday celebration. We left Daru and a short drive later we were on the hunt. Hidden in an alley behind Henceforth we stopped to ask someone working at a nearby spot for directions. We found the alley, spotted the blue light, and rang the bell. The door opened and we were whisked inside. Up the stairs a hallway lined with smaller parlor style rooms set the tone before we even reached the bar. Velvet fabric draped the ceiling over a grand bar decked out with bottles and dim lighting. Bar seating up front and high top tables arranged along the wall. We had not even ordered yet and the atmosphere had already delivered. To our surprise our escort to our seats was also one of the bartenders. Around 10pm there was only one other gentleman at the bar. No drink menu so we went with a staple old fashioned. Watching the bartender chisel ice and lower it into the glass with with a bar spoon was a talent worth watching. It was so memorable it made me want to chisel ice myself. The old fashioned was great. The no photography rule was listed and we followed it without question. No one around us had their phones out taking pictures and my date and I were not about to be the ones to break the code. A party of women came in looking incredible, clearly there to celebrate something special. Black girl magic was fully in the building!! The couple seated at the high top to our right came in after us and we quickly became their guides. They lucked up on this place as first timers just like us and we balanced the experience together comparing drinks and sharing what we had learned. That kind of spontaneous connection is always the best part of a new space. And that is the honest note worth sharing. The bartender was clearly more in tune with the creation of drinks than creating an experience for guests. For a new visitor on a birthday celebration that gap was felt. We never even got to share what we were celebrating. It may have been an off night, but we can see how given the right inviting bartender those in the space would engage more, which feels like exactly the vibe they are going for. For a cocktail experience that elevates the night or a chance to extend it somewhere unexpected this place delivers. We would certainly go back with a group and a more inviting bartender to show us the ropes. Next time we may start at the Henceforth before coming over. The Unforgiving Minute is a gathering place worth coming back to.
