Had a haircut with a master stylist, who was one of the owners, and he was a delight. Gave me an awesome haircut that increased volume in my hair and was detailed about what I requested. He recommended various products for my hair concerns! The salon itself is minimal and comfortable - taking appropriate pandemic measures. It should be noted that they did cancel my reservation multiple times due to some issues going on with the salon (once, the night before my appointment). Fortunately I have a flexible schedule, but it was unprofessional to reschedule multiple times last minute. read more

Hello, I have been seeing Sharon for men's haircut X 20 years. She is technically excellent, style conscious and knows what looks good on you. Sharon is also quite meticulous and takes her work seriously! I do not have direct experience with their other offerings, only to say that they are always doing weddings. Extremely unprofessional and rude. I went in for a blow dry only to find out that it was with Sharon one of the stylist who had done my hair at least 5 months prior. I actually hesitated but figured maybe it was an "off" day for her the first time and thought I would just give her a second chance. Boy was I wrong! She's a nice lady but can't blow dry women's hair. I left there as though I had just got up out of bed. See attached pictures for reference. Anyway I went back in the salon the same day to see if I could speak with the owner/manager. He wasn't there and one of the other stylist asked me to leave my info and she would pass it on. She told me he would probably just text me. I found that to be odd because I would think he would call instead. Anyway, the next morning I received a text and was happy that he was reaching out to me. I proceeded to tell him what happened and sent him pics of what my hair looked like when I left the salon. I told him that I wanted to have a second blow dry but by someone else because of what happened with Sharon. He told me that I would have to have Sharon do it again but that I would have to pay full price again. Huh? Instead of apologizing for what happened, he started to hurl insults and berate me. I also called him while we were texting and he was screaming, swearing and yelling at the top of his lungs. I couldn't get a word in edgewise. He really is unprofessional, callous and not in control of his emotions. He is one of those childish and pathetic individuals who accuse others of being Trump supporters when you disagree with them. How very sad for them! He's just a lunatic! I have owned several businesses for 42 years and I wouldn't dream of ever speaking to my customers the way this infantile unhinged little man did to me. He accused me of being cheap, a racist and a Trump supporter because I wasn't satisfied with the horrible blow dry. For the record he is white. I actually feel sorry for him because he clearly needs intensive therapy to help control his emotions. I have reported this incident and his extremely unprofessional and poor behavior to the BBB and the AG's office. - EDIT - so I just want to edit this review as of today because I read the salon owner's response and I want everyone to know that is reading this review that he is such a liar! He completely lied about everything he posted. He never ever said he would not charge me! In fact he said if I wanted to have it done over I would have to pay for the service again! if he offered to have it done for free a second time I would've taken him up on his offer!! Terrible Cut. This review is more than a year overdue, but the worst haircut experience I don't want anyone to repeat. I got a groupon so should have known better. I was making a drastic change and cutting over a foot off to donate. Wanted a trendy angled bob and showed many pictures of the look I was going for. Needless to say, the cut was terrible and I looked like a little boy. The hair was longer in the back than the front which is the opposite of an angled bob and it was honestly just embarrassing. I even told her that I felt like it was too long in the back and the stylist (can't remember the name) said that it was fine. I thought maybe it was just such a big change I needed to get used to it, and maybe the blow dry was just too bad for me to actually see the cut. A week later, I couldn't do it, it was the most embarassing cut, and called and went back to the salon to have her fix it. It was simple, I just asked her to cut the back to at least make it the same length all around. again, she didn't listen, and it was still longer in the back. and again I asked for her to cut it in the back b/c it was too long, and AGAIN she said that it was good. She said it would look good once she blew dried it. took forever to dry it, and again I said it was too long in the back... sure enough she said it was good and that the "blow dry needed to set". The owner heard the whole conversation and could see my frustration and didn't even bother to step in. If it is someone new in training and a client comes back unhappy I would expect someone else to help. Groupon was a waste of money (with the tip it wasn't even that cheap) and a ton of time. Dee is amazing. I moved to Boston from Chicago a few months ago and left my amazing aesthetician. I was on the hunt for a new aesthetician when my husband surprised me and purchased a Groupon for for a facial for me! I was a bit nervous to try out a brand new place, but should have had no fear at all. The facial room is downstairs where it is very relaxing. Perfect lighting and temperature. Dee went over my skin with me and the products I used and really asked questions to understand my skin which I can really appreciate it! The facial was a full hour with extractions which is very much needed. She explained the products and told me if I ever feel irritated or uncomfortable to just let her know. I found Dee via Groupon over a year ago, and it was the BEST deal I've ever found. Not only does she do an amazing job on my VERY thick hair - cut, color, blow-out, but she's also a gem to chat with. I've gotten so many compliments on my cut and color, and always refer them back to her. The salon is extremely clean and everyone there is so polite and professional, I especially love that they have a separate room downstairs for all their color work, cause no one needs to see me sitting there with that many foils in my hair. Similar to Kat, I went in for a Shellac Mani and Pedi. Bought a deal on Groupon. DO NOT GO HERE FOR MANI/PEDI SERVICES. This was absolutely the worst manicure I've gotten, and feel foolish that I spent the $40 trying to save money on my bimonthly ritual gel. I'm extremely unsatisfied and fear coming back to even try to get my hair done here. Last Thursday I arrived, the receptionist had me sit down and offered me water or tea. after 5 minutes, I was sent to the back where they had sofa chairs in which you were able to sit and get a non-traditional pedicure. I didn't think too much of it, until i saw her struggle to file my nails and paint within my toenails. They were literally not the same shape, the nail polish was everywhere and I was mortified. At that point, I should have literally walked out, BUT somehow, I convinced myself that maybe just maybe nails were her forte. Absolutely not, I had to ask her to paint my whole fingernail and she kept going over the edge. I should have screamed, but adults don't behave that way, I let her finish and left knowing that I will never be coming back. I mean seriously, I think the girl needs glasses. This is the first poor review I've ever felt the need to write on Yelp. I didn't even make it here for my appointment, and I won't be going. A friend of mine won last minute tickets to see Hamilton in New York City tomorrow, and as soon as I found out, I called the salon to ask to reschedule my appointment. I called at about 2:30 pm today, and my appointment was supposed to be at 3:00 pm tomorrow. He first said that I was breaking their 24 hour cancellation policy, and when I pointed out that I actually wasn't, the response was (verbatim), "Are you kidding me? That is so rude." He also said that I would HAVE to come in tomorrow, and that there were absolutely no appointments available for me next week (he didn't really seem to take the time to actually check). I won't be coming here, ever. If their response was so rude over the phone, I can only imagine what their customer service would be like in person. read more

I was looking forward to a "Spa Day" but it didn't turn out so great! I bought a coupon on Travelzoo for a spa day for a mani, pedi, one hour facial and one hour massage, it was a great deal! The coupon was supposed to be used by 7/31/14 and I was a bit late in scheduling my appointment but they were able to "fit me in" if I only had a 1/2 hour facial and a 1/2 massage (apparently they are only able to do the massages and facials during the weekend.) I understand that I waiting until the last minute but I was immediately made to feel as if I was nuisance. I arrived for my appointment and was offered water, tea or coffee which was nice (we were off to a good start). Then I met with my nail technician for my mani/pedi. The pedi was okay but not as relaxing as others I have had. The manicure on the other hand was a complete disaster! The lady that did my nails forgot to push my cuticles in one hand and then forgot that she had only done one layer of color on one hand. She began applying the top coat after only having done one coat - when I asked her if she was going to do a second coat she said she had already done it and continued to apply the top coat, then 30 seconds later she says..."oops I think you're right" and proceeds to apply a second coat then another top coat. Now each nail has about 5 coats of nail polish. on top of it all she painted on my skin and missed a few edges on the sides. So this was by far the worst manicure EVER! (see pictures). The massage and facial were okay (nothing to write home about). Overall I was very dissatisfied with my experience. Friendly staff. Received such a warm welcome when I walked in. First impressions last! Staff is all about the clients. No pretense and just wanted me to feel refreshed with my facial and hair cut. Place is somewhat messy and outdated without an impression of what the "Branding" is but I'm a past marketing professional so I take note. Not a reason to not go here because I like the refreshing local feel (North End neighborhood spot). They also offer a "locked in" price after first visit to bring you back with us essentially a discount on future services when you come back. They have candy too! Went in to get a haircut from the Groupon (good deal considering how expensive salons are in Boston!). I was about 20 minutes late which was completely my fault but Richard was very accommodating and told me I could either come back another time or he could just cut my hair and not blow dry. I don't really care too much about a blow dry so I agreed, and the next customer ended up being late so I got a little bit of a blow dry in. I was super thankful that Richard was so accommodating and understanding as I felt pretty awful that I was so late. He gave me a coupon for another cut so I'll definitely go back! Today I got a message from the Salon Manager. I'd rather not receive an apology then get one if it's going to have the following backhanded comment in it, "unfortunatelty as I said before, I cannot glue you bangs back on, and there was clearly a mis communication between your vision and the stylists." Let me just reemphasize that there was no miscommunication (one word btw!) and that the only thing that is unfortunate (might want to check that word too!) is the fact that the vision of the stylist I had is something that resembles the image you'd see through a pair of drunk goggles from the DMV. To Danielle's credit, she did say that I could come back and get my bangs redone after they've grown out. Thanks for the offer, but I WOULD NOT GO BACK TO THIS SALON IF YOU PAID ME. I, too, came to this salon after purchasing a deal on CoupMe for a haircut, mani/pedi, and sugar foot scrub. I have found some really great places through deals like this on CoupMe, Groupon, and BuyWithMe, But FRJ was just not one of them. My complaints are not about the customer service--the staff was very friendly and fun. And they were very understanding when I showed up 20 minutes late because I had gotten lost in the maze of streets around TD Garden, which was something I felt so awful for. Alda did my cut and was a very good listener, but either I wasn't clear enough or she misinterpreted what I wanted. I went in with rather shapeless, long hair and wanted to restore all the layers that I previously had. However, she really only cut one layer and didn't add any movement or shape to my hair. I've never had a stylist give just one layer when I'd asked for many. Jenni was my nail technician, and was super nice and very funny. I have no complaints about her abilities as my nails come out looking great. However, I expect a salon charging the prices of FRJ to have at least one pedicure station with the chair/foot whirpool combo, and they did not. Instead Jenni had to fill a tub with water and sit me in a chair in the middle of the salon and wheel over her cart of tools. What kind of salon doesn't have a pedicure station? Even the cheap salons in Chinatown have them! I was very shocked by this set-up. After I left I realized that I never received the sugar foot scrub that was part of the CoupMe deal. I don't know if the salon management didn't tell Jenni or if she just plum forgot, but that scrub was part of what I paid for. I'm used to just getting regular mani/pedis, so I didn't think about it until I saw a copy of the CoupMe voucher I had lying around in my apartment. Overall, my feeling about FRJ was "meh." I do not know what happened to Frances Ray Jules. When I came across FRJ, the salon was on still on Canal Street. I was reverting back to my favorite shampoo, and as the luck gods had it, FRJ was the only salon in Boston that carried the brand. I loved the ambiance of the slightly tacky boutique, and having had no luck in my year bouncing around Newbury's finest salons, I booked an appointment. I returned a couple weeks later, and a epic union was made. Fives years later, the salon is now on Portland Street, and has no resemblance to the pink walls of their previous location. My days dreading Newbury stylists feels like ages ago, but the salon lost some character for me in the move. In my opinion, their two best stylists left last year....and my locks, pledging their allegiances to the stylist rather than the salon, went with them. I reduced my rating of this salon from the once 4-stars down to 2. The reason for this is because I would like to recommend people to this salon, but the experience varies so widely based upon who customers interact with at the salon, that I don't feel comfortable giving the 2-thumbs up of approval. Call me nostalgic, but I miss the intimate quirkiness that seemed lost in the 2-block move. If you're considering Frances Ray Jules, note they do not take tips on credit card. So bring cash or there are plenty of ATMs in the neighborhood. The products they stock are excellent. If you're hair could use a moisture boost, try a Juice Bar treatment when you book your appointment. There was some major confusion about the Groupon that I bought and I ended up paying for my haircut instead of using the Groupon that I purchased. Which is fine, whatever I should've just rescheduled. Not the issue here. When I paid, gratuity was cash only. So I told the receptionist that I would run next door to get some cash because I forgot to stop and get some on my way in. I thought it was more important to be on time for my appointment then stop to get cash when I knew I could do it right after. She said I could put the tip on the card, so I did. Then when I was leaving some other stylist just stood at the front desk and mad dogged me the whole time I was putting my coat on. Like I mean...standing there with his arms cross just glaring at me. And right as I was leaving he said some incredibly rude remark about needing to get cash for their tip. He didn't even cut my hair... and if he did.... FRJ Salon, are you serious? You allow your employees to act that way towards customers? It's unfortunate because the Groupon I bought is not actually refundable ( like I was told it was) , and I was planning on coming back in to redeem it. Plus the guy who cut my hair was super nice and really helpful. But, I will never come back here. I used a Groupon ($32 for shampoo, haircut, blowdry - worth $65). LOCATION: Really convenient - It is across the street from North Station (main) Causeway Street entrance. If you drive, there's plenty of government center garages nearby, too. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Everyone was very friendly. It was sort of annoying that the two times i called (during business hours), it went to voicemail. The calls were returned within a few hours hours, but I was surprised to see someone at the front desk when I came in... HAIRCUT & BLOWDRY: I gave Rich (co-owner) a bunch of pictures that were all vaguely similar, and he used them, asked me what else I wanted, and then repeated it before he started cutting, which was definitely appreciated. He basically cut a look that was similar and worked well with my frame. He styled it SO WELL with just a round brush and blowdryer. He gave me tips throughout the appointment about how I can style my hair. It's been a week since my haircut, and I really like it. I don't love it as much as it looked when he styled it - but certainly is still really great. PRICE: I really appreciated that the salon gave me a"Lock in Price" for the rest of the year - so if I return, I will only be paying my Groupon price. This review is only for manicure. I decided to try out this place last Friday because I was in the area and did not want to go too far. I have the equipment to do gel nails at home but wanted to relax and let the professionals handled my nails. When I walked in, the gentleman was very friendly and nice. I think he's also the hairstylist. I told him I want Shellac tips. He had Jordan to help me. While I waited, he offered me water or coffee. Up until this point, my experience was very pleasant. Then, Jordan came and took me to the back. I explained to her what I wanted and she said she could do a color french tips with Shellac. My doubt started when I noticed she did not have any professional tools. I had everything she had on the table minus one clipper. She was very nice but certainly not very detailed. I had to point out to her that there was a bubble under one of my nails and the tips did not come out very straight. There were holes in the top coat. I could have done a better job at home. Even worse, the shellac started to chip the NEXT day. Four of my nails either have chipped or peeled of partially by today. It's not even a week yet. And I realized I did not see a nail technician license issued by the Mass. State Board of Cosmetology displayed anywhere. Their pricing is not too bad. They offer a 20% first time discount and a 15% discount if you work or live in the neighborhood. However, I don't think I will ever go back for their nails service and would not recommend anyone to. read more

I, too, came in here with a LivingSocialDeal for $50 for a haircut, deep conditioning and manicure. Richard warmly greeted me upon arrival, had me fill out some forms, and was then on my way. I told him what I was looking for and trusted my head of locks in his hands. He listened to what I wanted and did a wonderful job on my new "do"! It's been like 2 weeks and I still get compliments on my new haircut! My only complaint was how "drippy" the deep conditioning was. As I was sitting under the heater, eventually it started dripping down my neck and past my smock. Not sure if there was any way of preventing this or not, but knowing this, I'd suggest the salon provide clients with an extra towel in case this happens to others. Also, in my opinion, I don't feel like the deep conditioning did much for my hair. Either my hair just doesn't want to take it in or it's already conditioned enough, as I didn't see much difference before or after this treatment. Michelle was my nail technician and she was a pleasure to chat with and she did an excellent job with my nails. Even after about a week, my manicure lasted. Manicures usually don't last more than a week for me and the fact that this did, I was amazed. I was even complimented several times while working at the rock gym by a couple of the parents, asking, "you don't climb with nails like that right?!" It was nice to have someone else notice my nails from afar. =D Anyway, I'm glad LivingSocial brought this salon to my attention. Mixed review...very torn about this place. I went in with a TravelZoo deal for a mani-pedi, which was a great price ($25). Had some difficulty getting an appointment - tried 3 or 4 times - but ultimately got in at the time I was looking for. Customer service was great, friendly staff & nice, clean salon. As previous Yelpers mentioned, if you purchase a deal through another site, they honor the deal price for 1 year which is a nice perk and a great way to encourage repeat business. That being said, the pedicure experience was quite nice! Comfy recliner, old-fashioned wooden barrel filled with warm suds and a lot of attention paid to the feet. Manicure experience was fine, pretty standard. My issue here is with the paint job. Now I have short nails - I'm not sure if that makes a mani more difficult? But I did not get a clean line at my cuticles and there was errant paint on my fingertips. I could probably live with that, if it weren't for the fact that the very next day, the polish on one thumb practically fell off in one sheet, as if it were a press-on nail. This was OPI polish by the way, not some cheap brand. The following day, two more nails followed suit and so on and so forth. I expect to get AT LEAST 5 days out of a regular manicure. One, two days is UNacceptable. And the cherry on top? Now my toe nail polish is coming off. It's been 5 days. Pedicures typically last me two weeks with minimal chips. Every now and then, I stray away from all the well-known salons along Newbury Street due to this lingering feeling that there may be "something more" out there if only I look a little further. This time around, following this feeling proved to be a good thing when I went up to the North End to visit Frances Ray Jules. I would have never given this place a try if it weren't for a stellar deal I found on CoupMe.com (one of the dozen group coupon sites out there.) I'm always a little nervous when I approach a business with one of these coupons because I feel like they'll treat me like a cheap-skate, but the staff at FRJ treated me no differently than any other client. Phew! I didn't have to wait very long, even though I was 20 minutes early to my appointment. I was greeted by Alda, who immediately smiled, introduced herself, and showed me to the washing area where another girl took care of me. I didn't catch the name of the girl who did the shampoo, but she was very friendly and considerate when it came to the temperature of the water, which I was quite relieved about since this was one of those awful, awful 8-degree days and the wrong temperature would send me shrieking. Afterwards, I was brought back to Alda, who let down my hair and asked what she could do for me. One thing that always makes me nervous is having my hair cut too short and not knowing it until the end, or having my ear piercings torn by a comb (they're difficult to take out, otherwise I would have removed them all. It's a scary risk, but most of the time a stylist notes their presence.) Alda had absolutely no problem avoiding the metal in my ears, she didn't even seem nervous as she worked around them. And since I didn't want to go too short, she made sure approve the cut with me before starting by turning me around and showing me in a mirror how far we'd go. I HIGHLY appreciate this, because oftentimes you aren't shown what's going on back there until the very end... which can sometimes end in tears. Overall, she was very friendly, engaging, and considerate of my requests. After the cut, she even offered tips and product I can use to prevent my hair from getting all fried out (I'm a hair iron princess, and boy does it show in the winter) . She also has a wonderful accent and will tell you many charming stories about Italy. :) Following my haircut, I was off to get my nails done with Jenni, who instantly wrapped my feet into a towel and got to work. With it being winter, I was extremely self-conscious about making someone work with my dry, cold-bitten feet... but she didn't seem to be phased. She was hilarious and super-fun to talk to, while remaining focused and detailed on the task at-hand. She even smiled when I smudged my thumb (twice because I'm a clumsy moron), with no sighs or dirty looks whatsoever. I've never had my nails done anywhere besides one of those downtown street corner nail salons, but I think my experience here has changed my mind about going to those places ever again. I walked out into the bitter wind feeling like gold, which is how I believe everyone should feel after going to a salon! I'd recommend this place if you're looking to get a sequence of services done without going to multiple locations, because the quality or care does not falter with the different tasks. They also offer waxing and massage services, although I would be a little hesitant with the massage because the place doesn't give off a serene "spa" environment. The decor is minimal and the salon is brightly-lit, which makes it slightly more challenging to feel as if you're in a relaxing environment. However, this is certainly not a complaint, and I do not see it as a problem if it means the staff here can perform as efficiently and attentively as they do. read more

I feel bad that there are some mixed reviews of this salon: I was a bit nervous going in after I purchased a Bloomspot a while back and reading them, but was so happy with the services this past weekend that I just wanted to come on and let everyone know. I got a signature facial from Stephanie, and she was great. I got the full services (massage, peel, etc.) - super relaxing, Stephanie was very knowledgeable, and my skin felt amazing afterwards. I also found the staff also was super friendly from my last-minute appointment booking (I realized my deal expired that morning - and they took me that afternoon) to walking in the door. I thought they were very attentive. My one recommendation would be that it would be nice to have soothing music playing during the facial - the door is near the salon, so I could hear everything going on outside, so it was tough initially to relax (but I did :) It's such a minor detail that I've seen at other salons, but I think could make a huge difference. I'll be honest, I never liked how I looked with short hair. When I was living in Boston, I used to get my hair cut here every three months or so, and though they always did a really good job, I never really was too happy, through no fault of their own. However, my last haircut was a revelation, sorry for the melodrama. Marta cut my hair a few times now, and each time she has done an amazing job. The last time she cut my hair changed my attitude towards getting my hair cut, and it's hard for me to go elsewhere. The staff is always really friendly and skilled, they even remember how you like your hair cut, even if you haven't been there for a while, walk-ins are quickly attended to, and though the price for a haircut may vary by experience, I feel like it's always worth it, but it thankfully is nowhere near Newbury Street prices. I've come in the past 3 years or so on previous Groupon deals for haircuts and highlights, but none have convinced me enough to stay until now. I saw Richard for the first time last May the day right before my college graduation, and he left me with beautiful multi-tonal full highlights and full, bouncy hair! The *great* thing about Frances Ray Jules is that they offer a lock-in price for any service you've received on a deal. I'm good to get full highlights, haircut, and blow-dry for $98 the whole year! He also offered me a lock-in price for a $99 Xpress Keratin Blowout, which he recommended as a restorative treatment for my heavily highlighted hair. The second time I most recently came in, I decided to get a full Balayage (free hand/painted) highlight, of which I was quoted $140 including wash, cut, and blow-dry, as well as the Xpress Keratin blowout/treatment. I got nothing but the best from Richard: he was prompt, had a great attitude all throughout, and it was nice also having some complementary tea and snacks during my services. The salon is incredibly easy to reach as well, being next to the orange and green line by North Station. They also seem to have great packages re: waxing, facials, and mani/pedis! Thought I would update my review, as I just went here for a color. Note: I've never before colored my hair. I have super thick, unmanageable hair. Dee took it all in stride. wow....David is the best. He moved here from another salon which closed, so I have known him for 20 years! He has great service, styles the hair perfectly. Love the fact you get your hair washed first. Will say, I see other comments which I think are bit crude. I have never found the clientele to be anything other than gracious, but there is always a lemon. They also have a new receptionist, AWESOME. She knows her stuff. Interestingly, a previous review was censored, and it was positive for the business, so makes me wonder about First Amendment. read more

I had a HomeRun coupon, which brought me in the door. I paid $50 for a haricut, deep conditioning treatment and a manicure that was really worth $100. So worth it. Haircut: 4 stars. The girl (Alex, I think) did exactly what I wanted and actually talked to me instead of around me, which was awesome. She told me about products that might help my hair and have me one awesome head massage while she was washing my hair. I asked her to blow my hair out curly, but she ended up blowing it straight. In the middle of it, I just asked her to "make it look good". And she did. Woo! Conditioning Treatment: 2 stars. Meh. My hair felt really soft right after it was done, but I don't feel a difference now. I probably wouldn't get this done again. Nails: 3.5 stars. I heart the nail girl (I forget her name, but she was awesome). I wish that she could have painted in the lines more, but I'm pretty happy with the results considering I can't do my nails myself. I'd probably stick with the cheap Asian ladies for the nails, but this place is definitely on my list for a good haircut in Boston. Next time I'll just ask the hairdresser to scrunch my wavy hair instead of blow it out. read more

I just went and had the Opti Thermal Process Straightening by Jesse done and it was amazing! It was my first visit to the salon and everyone was really nice and professional. Jesse is amazing. I was there for over 3 hours and it flew by. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my hair and will be going back again for a cut. My only complain would be that I wished the normal cuts were a little bit cheaper. read more

In a teeny tiny corner of the North End, just beyond the roars of TD Garden Bank North, in between a Subway sandwich shop and an office block there is a pastry-sized salon, specializing in haircare, whilst nurturing nail and body services too. In this pastry-sized salon, there is a darling Asian woman, called Nancy, who seems to understand 60% of what I say, and pretends to understand the rest, all while cajoling my man-feet into something less than hobbit-esque and rocking my world with Shellac manicures. I first came here on account of an Eversave.com voucher. I figured I would get mediocre service (as is so often the case with salons offering vouchers), but that my nails would look pretty at an affordable price. Lucky for me (and for Frances Ray Jules, considering my desire to share every experience with Yelp), the service was not mediocre. It wasn't simply noteworthy, either. It was great. Little Nancy dragged a huge old-fashioned wooden barrel, filled with steaming bubbles, to the centre of the salon floor, and sat me down in a giant armchair in front of it. My initial reaction (ruh roh, what the hell is this? Quack nailcare 101?!) quickly dissolved along with my callouses. When Nancy flipped the leg supports up, everything made sense. After a good soak, who of us likes the bit where you precariously balance your feet on the edge of a pedicure tub/manicurist's knee? I know I don't. The leg support changes everything. You can happily relax (or grade papers, as I did) while Nancy performs mini-miracles on ya footsies. The Shellac manicure isn't as mind-blowing (although the technology really is) -- however, Nancy did a great job on my fingers. She also does nail art, even with the Shellac varnish, and is truly gifted with her assortment of nail art brushes (furthermore, she can layer the Shellac varnishes in such a way that you get a hundred more colour options). The voucher price was awesome. The rebook price (for Shellac manicure and normal pedicure) is very reasonable - $48. They have a bunch of offers on at the moment ($40 facial? hello!) and I overheard the owner talking about how, when times are hard, he'd rather offer loyal customers a good deal, and take a minor financial hit himself, than deceitfully lure in new custom and then charge them more when they return. I always have a fantastic experience here. A Groupon deal brought me here in the first place a couple years back and I haven't gone anywhere else to get my haircut ever since! Alex is the only person that can cut my bangs and hair the way I like it. She always offers great advice on how to style and which products to use for my hair. The easy accessibility to the T is also very much appreciated. I even bought a bracelet here because usually nothing fits my tiny wrists. They have so many products to chose from, including makeup, jewelry, etc. All around, a very fun place to get your hair done where you leave feeling like a million bucks every time! :) read more

I went to 4 different salons all over Boston in one year before finally finding the perfect stylist at FRJ. I had the same stylist for 5 years before I moved to Boston, and it was tough trying to find a replacement....but I have to say.... KATHRYN is the best, I highly recommend making your appointment with her! I am pretty particular about my highlights and cut, and she got it right on, on the first shot. A lot of stylists act like they are listening to you and then just do whatever they want anyway. Kathryn really listens to what you want and knows how to make it look great on you. She is extremely professional and friendly, and always gives me great advice on keeping my hair healthy. Get on their mailing list, they occasionally mail out good deals.
