Visited to celebrate our anniversary. Our server Julie was great and the staff overall was wonderful. There is a small outdoor seating area which we took advantage of since we had a beautiful late-spring evening. We both got the cucumber soup which was unique and delicious. My wife got the lemon chicken and I got the crispy cod. Both were top-notch and they know how to cook fish. I had lemon cake for desert and my wife had almond pear tart. Both great. We returned again to celebrate a wedding anniversary. Michael was very anxious and I was surprised to see only one server. All the table were eventually occupied so she and her sole assistant were so busy. I think they are having staffing issues. Including kitchen staff. The service was still good, but harried. The food came out more slowly than usual and the caesar salad was awful. the dressing didn't seem like a caesar dressing and I couldn't spot any cheese. The steak frites was perfectly cooks but the fries were not the usual crispy outside. I sure hope they aren't skimping on paying their staff well to retain them. If they are skimping, they won't be around long. I'd rather pay more for my experience and good food and easy going dining experience than what we got. I'll give them one more shot before I go elsewhere. I feel so bad that I had to write this review. read more

My wife and I recently celebrated our 12 year anniversary at Frank & Betsie's- from start to finish our experience was a disaster. I made a reservation a couple weeks prior. However, when we entered the owner, I assume, didn't even ask for my name and insisted we sit in a four top directly adjacent to the women's restroom. I asked if we could have a different table, considering we had made a reservation, which again he did not acknowledge, but insisted that all the tables were reserved. To be clear, no one else came into the restaurant from the time we sat down to our 6:30 reservation. They close at 8:30 - I think it's saying something that no one was coming in after 6:30 pm on a Saturday. Strike one. He then asked if we wanted something to drink... I asked for an Aperol spritz... he "made one" but it clearly was made with flat prosecco. I let it go. The recommended bacon wrapped scallops were three tiny scallops for $18. They were okay, but from a bygone era, and not made well enough to justify the cost. We chose to "upgrade" to French onion soup... big mistake. It came out at a million degrees, was clearly made with mozzarella cheese and tasted like a salt bomb. I'm a big fat man, and I could barely eat it. Even as the mains came, it was still steaming on a summers day. Strike two. As for the main, I was already angry and soured by the experience. My wife and I don't go out much, as we have a baby, and it's all the more infuriating when you have such a terrible experience. The duck was okay, but the skin tasted of gas from the broiler. The "Florentine" potatoes were weird, and you couldn't choose any other preparation of potato... also weird when the entrees are $40+. Like, wtf, you can't make a mashed potato? It's clear they batch cook the "potato of the day (I've never heard of such a thing in my entire life)" and can't be bothered to cook to order. My wife's steak cut was full of gristle. When they bussed the table next to us, I overheard and saw the presumed owner and member of the waitstaff move "unused" wine glasses from a dirty table to a newly set up table. He literally said, they didn't use them. These people ate, coughed, etc with these "clean" glasses. Disgusting. Strike a million. Needless to say, we didn't get dessert. It is clear this is a "well loved" restaurant, especially by its patrons of an elderly age. As a result, I think the ownership simply does not care about new patrons. They are content to serve the same people who have been coming from the 80s. For the price point, it is unacceptable. Our server was okay. He didn't ask if we were celebrating anything, which I also thought was odd, but so be it. When he asked how we thought the food was, we said it was "eh." First off, this place is a little gem. The service is what this place is known for, among other things. Now let's go to the food: Soup of the day - mushroom soup was delicious. Highly recommend it. Turkado panini - turkey, cheese, tomato, avocado and wait for it.. crisp bacon! Delicious. I actually finished all my it before the person next to me finish half their salad. Chicken salad olivieh - so good, reminds me of my friends mom's dish! Desserts Carrot cake - delicious. Very moist. Bessie's cookies plain and with chocolate - my favorite The price for the cookies and cake are so reasonable that you don't see cookies for .50 cents . It's so delicious that you want to buy more! This is an extraordinary find!!! A cozy intimate restaurant in Glencoe with the best food you can imagine and a staff that caters to you like family. We have had the gazpacho and butternut squash soup, crisp fresh Caesar salad, delicious Amish duck and fabulous lamb shanks. Julie, Jennifer and Joe are such helpful and friendly servers and Michael the manager is so wonderful you feel like you've come home. My wife and I had dinner there mid week. It was our first visit to Frank and Betsy's and we weren't disappointed one bit. Service was exemplary and the food was fantastic. My wife had a cucumber soup, followed by schnitzel.. I had a Caesar salad, followed by baked cod that was cooked perfectly. All the desserts here home made by Betsy and are fantastic. We had strawberry cheesecake. Wonderful.! Decor is beautiful and what you would expect from a French bistro in the 50's. We will be back soon. read more

We were welcomed by our server and she was quite helpful with the menu and specials. Two persons had Soup and Salad and loved them! I had the Branzino with Shrimp, which was delicious!! The helping was just right, which included some delicious vegetables. I chose a Caesar salad as my side. I enjoyed a nice wine with my dinner. Lovely place in downtown Glencoe for lunch. We stopped by and ate at an outside table after kayaking in Skokie Lagoons. All service folks were very helpful. The sandwiches came with soup or salad and potato frites. We had the chicken salad sandwich, and crabcake sandwich. Both were delish. First indoor dining experience since COVID hit. What a wonderful find this was on a mid week lunch when husband decided to take a day off of work. Completely comfortable here as staff are all wearing masks. Masks are requires of guests upon entry. The owner is so friendly and accommodating. We ordered a bottle of Bordeaux for lunch which hit the spot. I had the french onion soup to start which was so flavorful. My husband ordered the pate (not my thing) but he said delish. For lunch I ordered the chicken salad on their homemade bread very good. And my husbands ordered the Nicoise salad which he said was delicious. My wife and I live in Winnetka and have probably dined at Frank & Betsie's not fewer than twenty times in the past three years. It's not only one of the best restaurants in the area, it would probably be best characterized as a 'hidden gem'. If you live in the area and haven't been there, for lunch or dinner, you should give it a try. You won't be disappointed. We last dined there last Friday, March 29. The dining room is small but attractive and cozy. I've got a pet peeve against fine-finer dining restaurants without table cloths. Frank & Betsie's has tablecloths. And the room is comparatively quiet making it a good place for a romantic dinner. Michael, the owner/host, is beyond charming, and the wait staff follows suit. Friendly to a fault. Anyone complaining about the service at Frank & Betsie's is simply being dishonest. If you're looking for Michelin Star, 'tweezer food', you will be disappointed. If you're looking for a very comprehensive, traditional, menu at reasonable prices given the quality, then this is your place. For a first course, the soups are always outstanding, the Caesar salad is first rate, as are the scallops wrapped in bacon. My 'go-to' entrée is the branzino. The lamb shank is excellent. I'm not much of an oenophile, but I never have a problem finding a good, reasonably priced, bottle to buy. By the time we've finished our entrée, we've never had room for dessert, but if you're a fan of tarts, cakes, and pies, Frank & Betsie's is a unique find among contemporary restaurants. Their pastry case is always stocked with upwards of a dozen, very appetizing looking choices. I've observed that certain regulars seemingly would come here just for the desserts. When looking to Yelp or Trip Advisor for restaurant reviews, I never leave the page without seeking out the bad reviews. Frank & Betsie's reviews are predominantly five stars. I feel confident that the few one star reviews attributed to Frank & Betsie's are either dishonest or written by individuals with personality disorders. Came here for dinner because we needed a restaurant in Glencoe that was open on a Monday night and they are. I have to say up front that hubby was more enamored with it than I was. He would have given it five stars and I only three so I settled on the four. Service was pretty good. It started off slow but when we told them that we needed to make a 7:30 show they picked it up and it was pretty much perfect from then onward. We started the meal with a couple of glasses of wine. I had a very nice split of sparkling wine. I liked it a lot! For our meals hubby started with the homemade chicken noodle soup. He loved it. I didn't taste it but it had really good color and lots of herby goodness. If you eat with your eyes first, it was a very rich stock with tons of flavor! I had the Cesar salad. This was opposite to the soup. My eyes said that it wasn't going to be very tasty but in fact it was delicious! The dressing was the perfect Cesar flavor and I gobbled it down. For our mains, hubby had the fish of the day which was a Branzino. He really like it. It came with shrimp atop and a lemon butter sauce. I had the lamb shank. It was braised perfectly and the meat fell off the bone. I did want more flavor out of the sauce though. It was rich in color but didn't really taste like anything. I was certainly disappointed. This lack of flavor punch was the theme for my whole plate and continued to the potatoes and the veggies. They have a case of the beautiful looking pastries so we had to get dessert. I chose the strawberry mousse cake and hubby the German Chocolate cake. Hubby did say he thought his German chocolate cake on the dry side. But I always think German chocolate cake is dry. I wasn't a fan of the strawberry mousse cake. I don't know if they use gelatin in it or not but that is mostly what it tasted like to me. Plus I thought the mousse lumpy. read more

We were warned that we might be the youngest customers in the place, and we were. We did not have reservations at 5:30 and were sat at the rear corner table. By the time we left the restaurant was almost full. The clientele base average age, just guessing, was in the mid 80's. All of them were regulars. We also got their least experienced server. There were some mis steps. The roasted potatoes came to us cold. Yes we sent them back. Not much contact with the server, and generally ignored compared to the amount of attention the regulars were receiving. Good thing my wife and I are self-sufficient. The good is that the food is really good. I had the signature pate and my special other the bacon wrapped scallops. For the main I had the steak au poivre, the server did not ask how I would like it prepared, and my other had the special fish. All in all it was a good fit for us. We would go back. read more

Y'all. Seriously. This place likely gets overlooked. It's right on the outskirts of Downtown Winnetka right before it becomes Glencoe in between a boutique gym and a vacant commercial lot (as of December 2020). This is real food. This is pandemic special review $100. You get a starter, 2 FULL entrees (with an additional choice of soup or salad), plus a dessert AND a bottle of wine. The food was outrageously delicious and well packed too - on my 20 minute drive home, it was still perfectly warm to eat when I got home. The dessert easily could be eaten by two people if you didn't want to stuff yourself. The wine paired perfectly with the food. The owner is extremely kind and made pick up (curbside too) very accommodating. Huge shout out for the Lamb Shank - I mean, this is the kind of dish you go to eat out at because when you try it at home it doesn't work out. My wife got the Alfredo combo and the scallops were divine. The brie was a bit of a let down, not because of the taste, but rather the expectation - I wish it were baked in Phyllo or something else and came with some honey, but a great value as a starter none the less. Portions are bigger than most other fine dining places, but having eaten everything, I was perfectly full without being stuffed. Find this place. Help them out and keep them open. Went in for lunch after spending the morning at the Chicago Botanic Society. Only a short drive from there on Green Bay road. It was a very cute French Bistro style (as I imagine, having never been there) restaurant. White tablecloths , very polite owner gracious service , etc. We took advantage of their lunch special: any two entrees and and two desserts for 35 bucks. We also received two soups, which were also included. First, the bread: house-made baguette. Delicate crust, very delicious. That's always a good sign! I just wish restaurants wouldn't slice it into skinny little rounds, but I guess that's just a personal preference. The minestrone was excellent with a lot of subtle spices you don't usually find. My onion soup was ok. Nothimg special. Our entrees were the broccoli cheese quiche and the Dijon chicken breast. Both were excellent. The chicken wasn't dried out and the Dijon sauce wasn't overpowering. The quiche was very light with a buttery, flaky crust. A hint of the dessert excellence to come.. I got a very nice glass of sauvignon blanc from New Zealand (not included in the 35 dollars but We'll worth it!) We made our selections from the dessert case which was enough to make a cake-a- holic swoon. I chose the strawberry mouse cake which was so light it wiggled. My wife chose a heartier cake, the German chocolate. We agreed it was one of the best we'd ever had. The bill was reasonable but somehow we managed to leave without taking home one of their delicious looking pastries - a mistake we won't make next time And next time we intend to come in for the dinner service, which has a lot more interesting and complex items on the menu. So yep If I lived in the area, I'd be going there on a regular basis and gaining a LOT of weight. Some foods are just worth it! Finally, good Covid precautions, but I expect those will be relaxed in another month or so by State regs anyway. read more

A great old school local spot. Regrettably I missed it for several years because I jokingly thought it was a hot dog joint! Great for lunch or dinner. We love too many items on the menu to recommend anyone one item. Insist that Michael takes care of you on your first visit, all the staff are great but he is too nice of a person to miss meeting.
