What a little surprise. This is one of the only restaurants in an overly industrial area. Walking in, I was immediately taken by the cozy diner atmosphere. Our favorite local breakfast spot. Service is always quick, food is always delicious - what more could you want! We love their breakfast generally, but lunch is great too. I have always wanted to stop here but I fly right past it until today. The staff is friendly and welcoming and this is an old school diner. I stopped by for breakfast and saw the pancakes and they looked amazing. I ordered a Philly mixed grill omelette. Comes with grilled peppers, onions, and mushrooms. Side of homefries and toast. All for$13.50. There were only three tables when I was there but the order took a little longer than I thought it should have been. But amazing so very good and filling. A must go. read more

The food is a 4 or 5 but the staff has been less helpful on multiple occasions. The website says they close at 4:00 on Sunday so I start calling at 3:15 for a take out order. I called 3 different times but the phone just rang and rang. Since no one answered, I drove there and arrived at 3:35. The waitress that didn't answer the phone was quick to tell me they're closed and quit taking take out orders at 3:30. We haven't eaten here in years, but were happy to find it open when we needed a quick lunch. The outside is not very inviting, but the inside is diner fashion and appeared very clean. They, like many establishments, are short on help. We didn't wait too long and they kindly brewed us a pot of decaf. The menu has lots of breakfast items, as well as sandwiches and entrees. There are also daily specials posted on the board. I was happy to see a hot Turkey sandwich as I had been craving one. We didn't wait long and our food was out and was hot. As soon as I saw it, I was disappointed. It wasn't real Turkey, but deli meat. The Turkey gravy was brown, not like Turkey/chicken gravy. I should have asked before I ordered. I am not a fan of deli meat. I muddled through it and enjoyed the mashed potatoes, but really wished I had gotten something else. Service was good throughout and prices are decent. read more

I dont know how anyone could review this place anything less than 4/5 stars. Sure it's busy & there's a wait sometimes but that's because good service & food take time & they are working with limited space & staff. I have never had a bad meal here. It's very homey feeling, welcoming & a nice step back from the modern reality of the ever changing food industry. Such a good price on everything and no matter what I get it's done in a timely manner & exactly how I like it. The over easy eggs are perfect, by far the best in the city out of all the breakfast places I've been, potatoes perfect, toast with butter perfect, staff is so nice even when extremely busy. If you haven't been here CHECK IT OUT, I'll drive a half hour & wait another 1/2 just to get my breakfast here. This is my favorite little diner in the South Hills area. I really love the calm atmosphere without the hustle and bustle of chain diners. They let you choose where you want to sit, are quick to take your order, and we have always gotten our food in less than 10 minutes. The staff is quite friendly and all of the prices are very reasonable (all breakfast dishes are less than $10). I have only been here each time for breakfast but they also serve lunch and dinner. There isn't anything bad to say about this diner. They are well known and respected within the community as well. The food was excellent for my son and I this past Saturday morning. It added a great touch to our day. Our waitress even offered my son some candy. I've driven past this place a million times and it always catches my eye, but I've never stopped. Well I finally did and I was not disappointed! This is an old diner and makes you feel like you've gone into a time warp. They even have a cigarette machine out front by the door. Anyways, the place was very clean and we were greeted and told to find a seat as soon as we walked in. It seemed like it was a one woman show there. The woman who greeted us was also our waitress, and seemed to be the only waitress there. Not that it was a bad thing because she was amazing and dealt with everything very well. The menu was pretty standard for a diner so I went with the hot turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. My boyfriend ordered the bacon cheese burger with fries. My meal was delicious. The gravy was very good and the turkey was nice and thick, not that lunch meat turkey some places serve. The mashed potatoes were made from scratch and not instant potatoes, yum! My boyfriend loved his burger and said everything was very fresh. He kept saying how good the fries were too. You can see from the picture how huge his burger was! He could barely fit it in his mouth, but somehow managed to eat every last bite. We absolutely loved this place and will definitely be back. If you get the chance give this place a try! read more

Boy has this place gone downhill since Frank and Shirley are no longer owners. I don't even know where to start. The service is horrible. The service is slow. The servers are grossly incompetent. The servers are lazy. The servers also have an uncanny ability to be clueless about how to efficiently work in a fast paced environment. Lastly, I asked to add peaches to my pancakes and the server stated that it would be an additional $8. She had to charge me for a full order of pancakes. Whatever. Did you know that this building was the first and original Eat'N Park that opened in June 5, 1949? Frank and Shirley's have good food, the service was great, sweet server. This was once a favorite spot for weekend brunch but will never be patronized by me or my family again following the horrible treatment two of our family friends received. Over an hour after being seated, only a few of the ordered items had been served and no explanation was given until our friend went to pay for the items received and to leave. Others had been seated. Others had been served. Others had paid and left. Our friends were the only people of color in the restaurant. Our friends were the only people who speak English as a second language. When the woman at the cashier was asked: "Why hasn't my food been brought to my table?" the only explanation given was that the kitchen is so busy. Unacceptable. Disgusting. Disheartening. Not surprising. I will not support any establishment that discriminated against anyone. Spread the Word. Frank & Shirley's does not deserve our patronage. read more

I was asked to join a friend here for lunch so both my husband and I went. The place was packed when we arrived but fortunately for us our friend was able to get us a booth. Seating area is small. You can barely fit 4 to a booth but doable. Like most diners you will find advertising written all over the table. We were given a menu. Prices are very reasonable and you can get either a good breakfast or lunch sandwich for under $10.00. They also have a kid's and senior menu combined for aged 55 and up if you aren't that hungry. WiFi is available here. Since I had eaten breakfast earlier I looked at the lunch sandwiches. I inquired about the chicken and learned that it is actually a patty and comes with French Fries. Along with the fish sandwich those are the only two items served with fries. The rest are served with potato chips. Our friend got his usual ham with two eggs over easy, breakfast potatoes and toast. My husband opted for a turkey club. While I love omelets I noticed that they didn't offer egg whites. Time did not permit me to ask about that because the omelets are made with 3 eggs along with breakfast potatoes and toast of your choice. The food came out piping hot and I was amazed at the size of my chicken patty. It was placed in a six inch hoagie roll. Needless to say it was very good and quite filling. The others told me they enjoyed their dishes as well. Our waitress tried her best to be attentive to our needs but with a packed house which I would imagine comes from the after church crowd it can get to be hectic. When it is time to pay the waitress will give you your check and then you go to the register to pay. I don't get to Overbrook that often but have passed by this restaurant a number of times while heading downtown. My dad loves Frank & Shirley's and he wanted to take me out to lunch so that's where we went. We both decided on breakfast for lunch. I got their fresh banana pancakes. They actually rolled the pancake around the banana and topped it with whipped cream. I was so hungry I forgot to take a picture. This was soooo good! Just writing this review I would like some more. I also wanted some home fries and they were also very good. Big portion for a side so I didn't finish them. This is a small diner and the employees take pride in their service. If you've ever been to Gab and Eat in Carnegie, the interior and atmosphere at Frank and Shirley's is similar. The food isn't quite as good or filling though. When we got there around 10:30 on a Sunday morning there was only one open table and they seemed pretty busy. But they keep the line moving incredibly quickly. We were seated, drinks delivered and order taken with five minutes. Our food came five minutes later, and we were out the door in about 20 minutes total. I ordered a ham and cheese omelet and my wife ordered poached eggs, extra hard. The omelet was OK; nothing special. It was actually on the small side and instead of freshly cut ham off the bone it was prepackaged ham cubes. My wife's eggs came out very runny, aka the opposite of how she asked for them. I gave it three stars though because while it wasn't the best, the eggs still had flavor and the whole process was very quick and efficient. But sometimes, at least at breakfast, we kind of like waiting and relaxing. read more

My job is right up the road from this restaurant and my co workers always rave about it, especially about their breakfast. I finally decided to give it a whirl. I tried calling in to place an order to go, but I was on hold forever. I hung up and tried again a few minutes later, and was on hold a long time again. Being that I was at work, and didn't have much time, I preferred to place an order ahead of time so that I could be in and out. Again, I tried and now the line was busy. I gave up on it and went there. When I got there, I saw the phone off the hook. I am not sure if they were overwhelmed, but it wasnt that busy in there. There were a lot of open tables. Anyways, I placed an order for takeout. I got the omelete and home fries. While waiting, there was a very sweet young lady who worked there that chatted with me. She even gave me a free soda while waiting. I made sure to tip her because she was so kind. The food didn't take long to come out....thank goodness! I got back to work and went to town on the food. It was a huge portion, and tasted amazing. I was very happy with my food and the amount of time it took. The only recommendation is to get better with taking to go orders over the phone. read more

I can't believe this place gets the stars it does. We've only gone here when our favorite diner we go to for breakfast is closed. The couple of times that we did go here there is only ONE WAITRESS. The LAST time, and I mean LAST because we will never be going again, there was a young girl who came over to us and offered us drinks. We got them from her. The ONE & ONLY WAITRESS is constantly taking orders from the people who come in the back door and are placing to go orders. We waited 20 minutes for someone to take our order. First time I have been there was on a Sunday for breakfast. One waitress who was not overly friendly I guess because she didn't know us. When breakfast finally came it was cold. She was too busy with a full restaurant packing takeouts. There was a takeout person so not sure why she took that a priority over all of the tables she should have been waiting on. Food was sitting in the window so I am sure that was all cold too once delivered. She never came back until she dropped off the check and I told her my breakfast was cold she said sorry and kept going. She didn't even care. Just like that was the norm. I will never go there again. Love a good diner. Went here for lunch today with my parents and 7 month old. There was just the right amount of noise for her. I ordered the ham and cheese omelet which did not disappoint. I grew up in Somerset and thought I'd never find something to hold a candle to my beloved Summit Diner, but Frank & Shirley's fills the void. The staff is always nice, service is quick, and you can get out the door for under $15. I've never dabbled in their lunch or dinner items, but maybe one of these days I'll give it a go. If you're looking for a classic diner without the frills, put aside your fear of driving on Route 51 (it's not that bad!!) and get here. I haven't been here in awhile, but I definitely miss it. They do hold slightly odd hours as it is a mom and pop joint and they are definitely more of a breakfast place than anything else. Their omelettes are to die for. I'm also a huge fan of their potatoes for breakfast and especially with their gravy. Yum! My boyfriend is more of a burger person but he loves their burgers and fries.
