The vibe here alone would have been enough to draw us in, but the floral ambiance of the outdoor patio, the lighting, and the perfect summer evening weather made The Local our first dining choice for our weekend visit to Victoria! We found it randomly on our nighttime stroll through Bastion Square, although we ended up looping around the block to get a feel for the area before setting in. Despite it seeming to be completely full, we were seated immediately on an outdoor patio table away from the street, and our incredibly friendly and welcoming server Danika taking care of us for the rest of the stay. We ordered the Cowboy Steak Tacos, the Spicy Vegetarian Rockstar, and a London Pimm's between us, and were treated to a slowly-encroaching lightning storm in the distance, while we waited, which wasn't long! The Cowboy Steak Tacos were probably my favorite meal of the entire trip: peppery, spicy and lean, with a delicious savory sauce and pickled onions. Even my wife's tofu salad dish, something not usually to my liking, had a thick glaze of spicy sauce that gave it a more solid, inviting texture, and when coupled with the array of fresh veggies, really came together to create a dish even I would order. And my London Pimm's, despite being a gin drink which, again, not something I usually order, was light, crisp and refreshing, and something I'd like to have more often. I should try to get the recipe. I didn't see much of the interior, but I liked what I saw: looks like the kind of social bar, like the Dixie, that I tend to frequent back in Portland, although nicer: multi-hued neon lighting, loud music, multiple levels filled with party people. But the outside patio is really where it's at: I didn't see a restaurant with outdoor seating anywhere in downtown Victoria that could hold a candle to the charm of The Local, and it will always stand out in my mind as one of the city's premier outdoor dining option: a fantastic location at the base of the Bastion Square steps, and boasting an unparalleled ambiance. Sadly, the cocktails here are lacking alcohol. All 3 cocktails were very weak - Guy Ritchie (gin & tonic), Pimms Cup, Moscow Mule. We were all wondering if they just tricked tourists here. The cocktails are $13-$16 each - pretty pricey but I get that we're in the thick of touristy area during peak season. And my daughter's virgin Shirley Temple was not made with grenadine - maybe strawberry syrup instead? And it wasn't even stirred. All the red syrup sunk to the bottom. During our visit to Victoria, we stumbled on The Local. The patio was packed every time we walked by so we decided to stop in for lunch one day. The food was very good for bar food but the atmosphere was a bit much for the lunch vibe we were seeking. They had TVs with the latest sports on but then there seemed to be a party on the second floor and the bar area was so packed you had to push your way through to get to the bathroom. Today's visit to Victoria, B.C. we stopped at The Local and tried their Maui Love (flatbread), House Smoked Texas Pulled Pork Sandwich, Pound of Wings, Stanley Cup Poutine, Pacific Halibut and Chips (upgraded to Poutine) with a pint of Acres of Darkness stout. We are so glad we ate here. Excellent customer service from beginning to end. We were seated as soon as we arrived (party of 5). Our food was served within 10 to 15 minutes of ordering. Our food was hot, fresh and most of all delicious. Maul Love flatbread had a hint of sweet flavor yet with a spicy kick. Just enough red peppers to bring out the flavor and balances the taste of pineapple. This is a must try. Smoked Texas Pulled Pork was tender and barbecue sauce was perfect. Portion size is the pulled pork inside the bun was plenty. Poutine was yummy with the right amount of gravy. It went well with the pint of Acres of Darkness Stout. Our server was awesome. The stars were aligned as were hungrily wandering Victoria. The Local had a big table open for our group of 7 outside under the flowers! We were attended to quickly and had drinks in had not long after we were seated. The waitstaff was patient with our group as while we finally chose our meals. The food was timely, served beautifully, and was so very good. A huge plus waa that the appetizers were quite large and two items worked well for our group. Everyone enjoyed their meals. I'm thinking that I'd like to give The Local 4 and a half stars but I'll err on the side of caution and stick to 4. I won't lie, they are a pretty pricey spot but if you consider the environment around you (aka the awesome Harbour view), the ability to sit inside or out, and the proximity to the downtown core, I completely understand why. At the end of a long day, at the end of a long week, I met some friends here to get a bite and a drink and really unwind. My mind was racing with ideas about school, work, and other responsibilities until the glass of wine that I ordered (house white - menu says Dessert Peaks Pinot Grigio) came and I realized that their only sizes are 8oz's... Naturally, all my worries melted away as I tasted the first sip of that crisp, golden nectar and embraced the weekend. On a less dramatic note, I also ordered a serving of their yam fries and I was in LOVE. They brought out a huge basket of them with a very good amount of chipotle mayo; enough to finish the whole basket (and I loooove my chipotle mayo). The fries were cooked perfectly, actually, with a nice soft centre and a lovely bite to the outsides of them. We found this place by accident while walking around Victoria. ATMOSPHERE: The restaurant is located on Wharf Street in Bastion Square, a piazza-like setting filled with restaurants, bars and a museum. Tofino Linguine - 8 baby clams, 4 mussels, salmon (I didn't taste any), halibut, and 4 prawns done in a light white wine garlic herb sauce sprinkled with asiago cheese. The pasta was cooked nicely but the amount could've been a bit more. The sauce had a nice mild flavor that didn't need enhancements. There was way too many chunks of tasteless halibut, and the prawns, clams & mussels were good. SERVICE: We walked in without any reservations at 8:15 on a Thursday night and waited about 10 minutes for a table outside. The hostesses and servers were all friendly and professional. We started off with some pretty darn good Caesars (Canadian version of our Bloody Mary). They didn't have a whole lot of garnish on them, but what they had was unique....a beef stick and a pickled asparagus. We shared the Blackened Pacific Halibut Burger and the fries and ordered a separate West Coast Seafood Chowder. Those were winners! The Halibut Burger was done to perfection. I'm picky about my fish, and this was not dry, or over cooked, or too salty, etc. It was perfectly moist, flaky and delicious! The Seafood Chowder was very tasty and quite loaded with "good stuff". This place is really quite disappointing but it deserves some credit for the location and vibe. The food is overpriced, first of all. Looking at the menu, you aren't surprised to see the prices, however, once you start eating you'll quickly realize you've been robbed. Our tiger prawn tacos and chicken wrap were both boring and flavorless. They should be offered for half the price. Had I ordered them on a late night menu at a worse looking bar I'd have been happy, but they really don't live up to the expectations set by the appearance. The robbery continues with a mandatory 18% gratuity on all bills. Not that there's anything wrong with 18% as an amount to tip your servers, but the imperative of it sets a high expectation across the board. The service was not enough to compensate for the poor food and audacity of the mandatory gratuity. Nothing to complain about, but just passable enough to make the other flaws worse. Overall, I'd explicitly recommend avoiding this establishment. It's a shame due to the lovely location but there are plenty of bars and patios nearby that will earn your money. read more
