I'm not ashamed to say that when I see someplace cool on a Food Network show, I try and visit them if I ever get to that town. Frank's noodle house is one of those places. I am, as I've said many many times, a huge fan of Chinese food. And to see the coverage of this tiny little restaurant with the hand pulled noodles, my head exploded. I knew that if I ever got to Portland and had some time, I would find my way here. This was that weekend. I walked in and it was just before the lunch rush, so the restaurant was empty. I asked for, and was granted, the opportunity to stand in the doorway of the kitchen and watch them pull noodles. It was really cool to see. My friend and I were seated and it was minutes before we got fed. He wasn't feeling very well so he just shared some of my soup, but I dug in and tried to cover the entire menu as well as I could. I ordered the steamed dumplings with pork and scallion, the wonton soup and the pork and black bean hand pulled noodles. Everything was amazing. The texture of the dumplings... The rapper... Was just amazing. Tender but chewy and thick enough to give you just the right consistency that you want from a dumpling. Conversely, the wontons from the soup were perfect for what they needed to be. Thin and delicate, with a perfect amount of filling. And the broth was so tasty. Of course, the star of the show was the noodle dish. Chewy and delicate, with enough texture to hold the sauce. And the black bean sauce was pungent and sweet, with just enough spice and flavor to make you enjoy every bite. It was really a perfect meal. Frank's Noodle House has been on our list of places we must go since Ben saw the Triple D episode featuring the hand pulled homemade noodles. As usual we ordered the things that were featured on the episode, which would include the dumplings and the chicken hand pulled noodle stirfry. I also got the egg flower soup which is basically egg drop soup. We actually didn't get to the restaurant until about twenty minutes before closing which is something we absolutely never do but it was the last day that we would be able to go to the restaurant before leaving that they would be open so we took a chance and they were more than accommodating to us. Our food came out in record time and though we felt bad about being there so late, they continued to let more restaurant patrons in because they knew that they could make the food so quickly, so it didn't make us feel so bad. The owner was there from the episode.So that was pretty cool to be able to see him.And of course, a ban that took pictures with the signature Triple D sign and spray painting logo. I have gone here several times in the past. Some items were excellent and others were always atleast good. The past few visits I had the beef and noodles which used to be excellent. The last time they were just kinda average. Last week I had the cashew chicken and it was also just meh. Today I ordered the Orange Chicken and it was not even average, Just greasy, slimy, chewy, tough and meat consistency, texture as well as taste was not even recognizable. One of the worst Chinese dishes I think I have ever had. It was simply inedible so I just threw it in the trash. Franks was once the 5 Star place to go for Noodles and Chinese. Yet, after today I think this will be my last visit. I do not know what has changed here whether it is kitchen staff, food ordering, ingredients. Not sure but something is just off. We went for lunch. I had the chicken with noodles - they're chewy and delicious. I can't handle spice so they did a zero level spice - it was great. Others in the group tried "mild spice" and found they needed to have additional hot sauce because it wasn't enough heat for them, so proceed at your own risk. Someone else had the chicken noodle soup, which was a bucket of noodles and, per the recipient, was very difficult to eat (you really need a pair of scissors to cut the noodles into manageable pieces because they are seriously long). For nine of us, we spent $228 including tip and drinks for four people (the others had water). I thought that was quite reasonable. read more

I was in town for a few days for a conference and asked the hotel front desk (Hyatt Regency Portland) if there were any good Chinese restaurants in walking distance. The front desk girl, who is Asian herself, recommended this place for hand pulled noodles. Say no more! I walked over and while I only had 30 minutes to place my order and eat as they close at 8:00 p.m. they were not too busy on a Friday night and I was able to be seated right away. The waiter was super friendly and knowledgeable and it appears that Frank himself was working the register. I was craving some soup as I have been away for work for a week and missing my Chinese food. The waiter suggested I add some hand pulled noodles into the wonton soup and I gladly agreed. The broth was super flavorful and chock full of chopped baby bok choy, carrots and mushrooms. Plentiful wontons and the most delicious hand pulled noodles. Be warned the noodles are super long which is not a bad thing but impossible to spiral onto your soup spoon and one piece without them slurping off. The pickled daikon was perfectly pickled not too sweet not too spicy and in the perfect portion size for a single diner like myself. I would definitely return if I was in the area again. read more

I ordered the Kung Pao I also ordered the fresh salad rolls. Such a disappointment the tofu was not what I expected. It was just cubes of tofu with compound sauce over them. I was expecting the celery, the peanuts and everything else in a kung fu. None of it was there. The salad roll was rice wraps around lettuce. Just shredded lettuce I didn't find any other items inside. The peanut sauce that came with them was awful. I didn't even hardly taste like peanuts. It was very sour. Not the type of sour that you would expect in a sweet sour. It was the kind of sour that you get when something is spoiled. I don't think I will ever order from this establishment again. read more

Family members recommend this place and it's in our traffic pattern but we kept driving by it rather than stopping- another mistake- it's great!. I grew up in Seattle during Seattle's rougher days and this place brings back that good food in an unpretentious setting feeling. Service is friendly and fast- prices are very fair. The menu is ample but why you wouldn't just eat the hand-pulled noodles - the other items are as good as and, in some cases a bit better than other places but the excellent hand-pulled noodles are harder to get elsewhere. My partner and I had the noodles with shrimp and a plate with black-bean sauce - loved both. Partner recommends hot and sour soup and I enjoyed the spring rolls. We love the food at Frank's. We've gone a couple times and the food never waivers. The only reason for the reduced star is the service. We've gone with kids and without kids and it didn't seem to make a difference, both times we felt like an inconvenience to the staff. The food is simply fantastic. I forgot to take photos of the food on this trip because we met up with friends but we had the pork mandu, crab rangoon, and sweet and sour soup. Then we enjoyed the hand pulled goodness of NOOOODLES! The service was fast, we actually dined UPSTAIRS for the first time and that was somewhat of a weird experience. The house had a bunch of stuff on the stairs and I could not help but think my brother who has a hard time walking would not be able to get up into the restaurant or upstairs since the downstairs dining was full. They also closed on a weeknight at 8 which is normal but they were rushing us out and warned us they were closing in 10 minutes when it was 20 to eight. First time getting food from Franks and we had it delivered. We ordered the Fresh Salad Rolls, Mongolian beef, Stir fried noodles with chicken, Shanghai Baby Bok Choy and Handmade Dumplings. The food was ready and delivered on time. The salad rolls were pretty simplistic and plain, I'd order something else in the future. So. This is one of the worst tasting noodle house experiences I've had in a LONG time. (Also a large amount of these 5-star reviews appear to be bots, considering the typing style is that of AI.) The noodles were so bland that I felt like I was eating basically nothing. They're chewy in some spots, so soft they disintegrate in others. The vegetables were primarily raw (as in they touched the pan and must have been in there for less than 3 minutes.) the crab puffs are cream cheese puffs that I believe are from a frozen bag. Ambiance? None. Service? O K. I ordered the pork belly noodles. Overall this is one of the least enjoyable experiences I've had at a hand-pulled noodle place. I shouldn't have to feel like I need to pour a dozen sauces from my own kitchen over something in order for it to become edible. There's also a vaguely sour flavor on the noodles, something that isn't sour like you poured a black vinegar sauce on them, but sour almost as if something is spoiled or right on the edge of spoiling. Maybe Frank is just focused on the new shiny location in Beaverton, because this location has just given me something not worthy of his legacy and reputation. I hope he cares enough to order these noodles under a different name than his own at some point, and see what they taste like for himself. I thought it was just mine, but they're all like this. The reviews were so good, but this is the most bland, most depressing food I've had in a long, long time. Good spice level, mindful use of celery, and the springy and chewable texture you can expect from well made hand pulled noodles. I've also had the fried rice which was absolutely fair but nothing insane. I personally cannot get enough of the ambience. It's cool, confusing, clean, and comfy. Frank's food did not disappoint. The thick, long, hand- pulled noodles have a texture with a bit of chew. I had heard many good things from this place, so I was really excited to try them. Sadly my first time there was not what I thought it was going to be, and left super dissatisfied. I ordered the crab puff & the dumplings off the appetizers. The crab puffs were delicious even though they only 2 pieces out of the 4 I got had 2 little itty bitty pieces of crab, I would say they were cream cheese puffs. I still loved the flavor, they were very flavorful. I never got to taste the dumplings as they placed the plastic sauce container inside the box with the food. The food was obviously really hot and melting the container. It spilled all over my dumpling. I didn't feel comfortable eating them as they had been exposed plastic and weren't edible any more from the toxins the plastic lid released from the heat. Look at the poor lid! My co worker went with me to pick up my lunch and they were with me when I opened it. She looked confused and asked if my food was possibly heated in the microwave? I'm sorry not sorry for the low rating, but this really makes me wonder how many times this has happened to others. I accidentally ordered to the wrong location and when I arrived to pick up, within seconds the host had called the other location, cancelled my order and started preparing a new one. Skimpy portion of the black bean sauce was not even close to being enough to toss the already small serving of their prized noodles. Nobody wants to eat plain naked noodles; had to make our own additional sauce at home. Mapo Tofu might have had a good spicy kick but need twice the rice and twice the beer to finish it down. Oh man, this noodle house was legit! I'm so glad it was recommended to me and others while we were in town. We did call ahead to make a reservation so that we could have a table of 6 all sit together. Once we arrived, they were ready for us and immediately had waters brought to our table. Since we were on a time crunch, we needed to order quickly so our server was very accommodating. We also asked to pay separately, which we could do at the register. It was not that bad to figure out the payment with a large group. My chicken pan friend noodles were awesome! The noodles were sooooo good and fresh. I cannot handle much spice, so I am glad they were able to modify the spice level for my order. Others did ask for extra spicy though and they all said the heat was just right. I found Frank's Noodle House in a travel blog and so glad I did. This is an authentic Chinese restaurant who do their own hand pulled noodles. Their most popular dishes are their pan fried hand pulled noodles and you can get it with different meats. I got the shrimp. The server will ask you what spice level you would like. My hubby decided to try their chicken over string beans with rice and we shared their handmade dumplings with spicy sauce. OMG everything at Frank's is soo good it leaves you wanting more! Just some good chinese comfort food! The place was packed and there weren't too many tables. Frank is situated inside a single family home turned restaurant. The phone I heard was ringing quite often. The single server lady was very nice, worked quick on her feet! The kitchen churned out dishes quickly. I first learned about Frank's Noodle House from Somebody Feed Phil from his Portland episode. When I visited I knew I had to come and try their hand pulled noodles. My friends and I were exploring the city and I put in an online order for pickup- but in my excitement I didn't realize there are two locations and when I asked for my order they let me know I had accidentally ordered to their Beaverton location!! I figured I was just going to lose out on my order and have to pay again, but they graciously said they'd call the other location to let them know and remade my order for me right away. This was over and above customer service in my opinion. I thanked them profusely... and apologized a few more times for the inconvenience. About fifteen minutes later I left with a super fresh and delicious order of handmade dumplings and hand pulled noodles with black bean sauce. It was so so good!! The hand pulled noodles are unreal and I wish I had ordered even more menu items just to taste more of their creations. Next time I visit the area this will be a must.
