    Gwai Wer Noodles(沙茶面)
    Sean R.

A little disappointing. Been a few times and have tried mostly dishes from the house specials section that have their homemade noodles. I've tried the Red Curry noodles, Judy's noodles and Gwai Wer noodles. I really liked the consistency and thickness of the noodles, however the sauces and rest of ingredients lacked flavor and were underwhelming. And too much shiitake mushrooms (which are the only mushroom I don't like). I also tried the Mu Shu w/beef which I haven't had before, sort of like make your own tacos served w/ 4 thin tortillas. The beef was like a stir fry mixed w/ cabbage. It was just ok. I felt like it needed the hoisin sauce for any flavor, & tasted better when I added cilantro/onion at home or I'd recommend fresh cucumber strips for extra crunch. Also I should've gotten the mu shu w/ pork I know now. That being said I still might come back to try their more classic Chinese/American dishes especially for lunch special, cherry pork sounded pretty good. Also portions are very generous! I think only the top 15% of eaters could finish an entire entree so for the other 85% that means 2 meals for the price of one

This was my first time here and I'll definitely be back. There is plenty of parking spots for the restaurant. Tables or booths are available for seating. This would be a good spot for delicious and flavorful Chinese food. I ordered 2 appetizers and an entree. 1 order of shrimp dumplings and 1 order of pork potstickers. I also ordered the beef with broccoli. All items were excellent and full of flavor. The price points are really good here. Portions are well worth the money. The service was good and my server was attentive and helpful. The environment is welcoming and comfortable. Very relaxed vibe with nice music playing. There is air conditioning as well. Can't wait to tell my friends and family how yummy this place is. Truly a hidden gem in Portland. Check it out yall! Cheers!

Wings are amazing! Friendly service. Singapore noodles is the entree to try. Nice location in Portland. Parking is iffy but worth it to come in for a

This place has been around a long time and a friend said it was solid, classic Chinese food. They mentioned to not expect gourmet dishes, but delicious and filling food. We ordered Crab Puffs, Shandong Beef, White Prawns, and some White Rice. The crab puffs were tasty, light on filling - but classic. I thought I saw a pic on yelp where they were bigger half folds. The Shandong Beef was phenomenal! Amazing flavor and nice cuts of flank steak, solid value. I was surprised by the tastiness of the white shrimp. Experiencing the mix of shrimp, broccoli, and the beef over rice was superb! 10/10 would order both again. The rice could have been fresher. Highly recommend if you want Chinese food. I can't wait to visit the space and try again!

WOW! This is the best Chinese restaurant I've gone to the entire time I have lived in Oregon! The restaurant itself has seen better days, tears in upholstery, bars on the windows, but I'm here for the food and they hit it out of the park with fresh ingredients, nice sized pieces of meats and vegetables (no minced chicken in that fried rice), and wonderful flavors. They also have friendly staff and I can tell they make an effort to keep their guests coming back. I will definitely be back.

Ask the Community - Shandong Restaurant

Has the restaurant been sold recently? I have been going here for years and love the food. The food is still good, but the vibe has changed dramatically. The host/server has no personality. Staffing is very limited. Service has gone down hill

Yes it was sold and had new management take over. They hire only family. Let go all the long term waiters they had.

Anyone here familiar with the term "wok flavor"? I would like to know if this restaurant has any chefs who know how to toss the food in the wok to get the flames in the pan which gives food a very delicate smoky flavor "of the wok". I crave it!

I’d suggest calling the restaurant. Thy would be happy to answer your question and they would know best

There is plenty of seating there and It looked like there was a space for live music and string lights - probably a fun spot to grab dinner in the evening. We came for lunch and ordered the chao mian with chicken (spicy) and bian bian noodles (spicy). The noodles are cooked to order and we were served quickly. The serving sizes are huge. Neither one of us could finish ours. We'll likely order one dish to split next time, and that'd still probably be more than enough. The flavor of the chao mian was a bit lackluster. It was savory with a soy sauce flavor base, but got a bit repetitive with each bite. It was decently spicy and texture was there with the veggies, but I wish there was a way to customize with more spice or vinegar to taste. The bian bian noodles were more flavorful and also spicier. Fun noodle texture. There are also other vendors in the garden so you can pair a dessert, drink, or side with your meal while staying in the same area. Overall, a filling meal for a good price! Would come again to try their beef noodle soup.

Since we had our dog with us, we ordered everything to go and enjoyed it back at our hotel just down the street. Just a heads up if you're planning the same, there wasn't any outdoor dining available. Being from the SF Bay Area, one of the first things we looked for was Har Gow and Siu Mai, but they weren't labeled the way we're used to. After asking, we found out the Crystal Shrimp Dumplings are their Har Gow, and the Shrimp Siu Mai contains pork, which was exactly what we were looking for. We ordered two of each. We also ordered two Beef Chow Fun, Combination Fried Rice, Eggplant with Minced Pork, Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs, and three pear sodas. The dim sum absolutely hit the spot. The Har Gow and Siu Mai were well seasoned, nicely prepared, and exactly what we had been craving. The Beef Chow Fun was another winner. We were glad we ordered two because we found ourselves reaching for it more than the fried rice. The Eggplant with Minced Pork was also delicious. The eggplant was cooked perfectly -- tender without becoming mushy -- and the seasoning was right on point. I'm also glad we changed our order from the House Special Spare Ribs to the Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs. Unlike many versions, these weren't battered and fried, so the pork maintained a great texture while still being coated in a flavorful sweet and sour sauce. One unexpected favorite was the pear soda. It's made with Asian pear, so the flavor is much lighter and more refreshing than the sweeter pear sodas we're used to. The only hiccup? They're bottled with a traditional cap, and since we were staying in a hotel, we quickly realized we didn't have a bottle opener. Let's just say we got a little creative. One thing I really appreciated was that the staff noticed our large takeout order and packed it thoughtfully. They included six extra takeout containers, plenty of forks, chopsticks, and napkins, which ended up being incredibly helpful since we were eating in a hotel room with no paper plates or utensils. It's a small gesture, but one that definitely didn't go unnoticed. Overall, we were really happy with our meal. This place lived up to being on my bookmark list for over a year, and I'd happily come back the next time we're staying in downtown Portland.
