A friend and I were looking to try out a new spot to us in the Hollywood area. She suggested this and was drawn to the restaurant because they seemed to offer many vegan options. She is vegan and we have struggled to find a great spot in this particular neighborhood until now! I am not sure but, I think they have available parking behind the restaurant. There are lots on both sides - one was full and the other yes large and empty. It seems like it would be for the restaurant, but there is a large banner, I think people miss... but it clearly states it is for the community center on the next block with towing enforcement 24/7. I parked on the street out front. The service was excellent! I felt like one sweet lady was taken care of everyone, but she seemed on task and determined. I was amazed at how fast our food came out! It was clearly made to order, super fresh yet took mere minutes. My vegan friend was super happy as she got a spicy eggplant and tofu dish with fried rice. I ordered the shrimp and broccoli in wine sauce, which was just as incredible as the pork belly fried rice I got as well. Probably my only complaint, more like a note is that I wish they had combination orders. Ordering my 2 dishes was amazing and I ended up with quite a number of meals of leftovers but I would also love to try half their menu! The ratings on this place are surprising. I thought it was delicious. Lots of vegan options which were so great. Service was so kind and very quick. The only item we did not like was the spring rolls. They were very mushy inside and not appetizing. Very casual and family style dining. A little disappointing. Been a few times and have tried mostly dishes from the house specials section that have their homemade noodles. I've tried the Red Curry noodles, Judy's noodles and Gwai Wer noodles. I really liked the consistency and thickness of the noodles, however the sauces and rest of ingredients lacked flavor and were underwhelming. And too much shiitake mushrooms (which are the only mushroom I don't like). I also tried the Mu Shu w/beef which I haven't had before, sort of like make your own tacos served w/ 4 thin tortillas. The beef was like a stir fry mixed w/ cabbage. It was just ok. I felt like it needed the hoisin sauce for any flavor, & tasted better when I added cilantro/onion at home or I'd recommend fresh cucumber strips for extra crunch. Also I should've gotten the mu shu w/ pork I know now. That being said I still might come back to try their more classic Chinese/American dishes especially for lunch special, cherry pork sounded pretty good. Also portions are very generous! About 1:15PM, we were the only customers, and we were there about an hour with no new customers coming in. Spicy Eggplant was about as bland as possible, although it was a very ample portion. Tofu & Broccoli also didn't have much flavor. Zero ambiance. Couldn't lift iron tea pot on my own to fill my cup. This was my first time here and I'll definitely be back. There is plenty of parking spots for the restaurant. Tables or booths are available for seating. This would be a good spot for delicious and flavorful Chinese food. I ordered 2 appetizers and an entree. 1 order of shrimp dumplings and 1 order of pork potstickers. I also ordered the beef with broccoli. All items were excellent and full of flavor. The price points are really good here. Portions are well worth the money. The service was good and my server was attentive and helpful. The environment is welcoming and comfortable. Very relaxed vibe with nice music playing. There is air conditioning as well. Shandong is a favorite of the in-laws, so we are here quite often! I recommend the dry sautéed green beans and the clay pot curry chicken. We usually stick to mild due to family preference, but the spice level in the curry is dialed in perfectly - it gives a nice boost of flavor without the crazy heat. My only problem is that you have to order rice as a separate side, even if the dish is clearly meant to be served with it. Still, Shandong is a dependable Chinese food restaurant that is especially great for picky eaters. read more

This place has been around a long time and a friend said it was solid, classic Chinese food. They mentioned to not expect gourmet dishes, but delicious and filling food. We ordered Crab Puffs, Shandong Beef, White Prawns, and some White Rice. The crab puffs were tasty, light on filling - but classic. I thought I saw a pic on yelp where they were bigger half folds. The Shandong Beef was phenomenal! Amazing flavor and nice cuts of flank steak, solid value. I was surprised by the tastiness of the white shrimp. Experiencing the mix of shrimp, broccoli, and the beef over rice was superb! 10/10 would order both again. The rice could have been fresher. Highly recommend if you want Chinese food. I love this little place. While I've had mixed experiences dinning in, their food is always a hit for me. It's advertised as Northern Chinese, so check the menu first and don't expect typical American Chinese dishes. My usual order is the hot and sour soup ($12, though I swear it's $10 at lunch, don't quote me on that), and it's the best I've ever had. Full of whole prawns, big (baking soda for tenderness?) pieces of chicken, mushrooms (two kinds), and tofu. It's peppery, sour and reheats well. And for that price, 32 oz. Enough for two meals, or one big soup day. If you're looking for something a bit different, this is a good option. Parking can be a bit tricky, as I believe the "lot" is for another business or for the community center. Will add some pics on my next trip! read more

While waiting, no one greeted us, communicated with us, or even seemed willing to help. The customer service was horrible. WOW! This is the best Chinese restaurant I've gone to the entire time I have lived in Oregon! The restaurant itself has seen better days, tears in upholstery, bars on the windows, but I'm here for the food and they hit it out of the park with fresh ingredients, nice sized pieces of meats and vegetables (no minced chicken in that fried rice), and wonderful flavors. They also have friendly staff and I can tell they make an effort to keep their guests coming back. I will definitely be back. read more

Potstickers were amazing and perfect comfort food on a cold drizzly night. My friends and I ordered the Mu-Shu pork, dry spiced green beans and the spicy eggplant. All three were excellent! Especially the green beans and Mu-shu pork... the pork was crispy the way it's supposed to be I ordered the Thai iced tea and it was sooo tasty! This used to be the place to go for quality Chinese food. Sadly, service is seriously lacking. I cannot tell if it is the advent of DoorDash that has them distracted from serving their in- person customers, a change in management or both, but the pure chaos happening behind the front desk and in the kitchen is undeniable. I ordered take out in- person and was told my wait would be 10-15 minutes. It ended up being a 55 minute wait for my food. During those 55 minutes I saw the spectacle of poor organization and minimal communication from staff as more and more people arrived to pick up their orders. A good majority of the folks coming in were DoorDashers, but there were a handful of other folks who just called in their order only to stand around and wait with the rest of us. At one point, I counted 10 people waiting around the front desk looking perplexed as no staff members acknowledged them. Orders came out from the kitchen with little logic of who ordered what first. It was a real nightmare. I finally got my order and drove it home only to discover that they got it wrong. At that point, my family were so ravenous that they would eat anything. We will not be ordering anything from Shandong in the future. read more

Lunched with a friend recently at Shandong, and while the nearly empty restaurant's decor was nice enough and the location was convenient the food we were served was clearly uninspired and disappointing. We picked two items off the lunch menu: cashew chicken and sweet and sour pork. The cashew chicken was extremely bland, with the pieces of chicken coated with a sticky white sauce. The dish included a couple of cashews and for some reason a single green pea. The sweet and sour pork failed to include red bell peppers. My friend went through her plate searching for them and finally found only two small pieces. Sadly, nothing really distinct or noteworthy here. read more

Our group of about a dozen friends gathered for lunch at Shandong. While ordering, our server abruptly informed us that they do not split bills and required either cash payments or all charges on a single card. This policy wasn't mentioned on their website, signage, or beforehand. We asked about moving to separate tables, could we use our cards if we did that? The server was flat out RUDE, making faces at us, shrugging and passive-aggressively letting us know that she was not going to give an inch. This led four of us to leave to go to the nearby Sushi place. (Very good, by the way). We've enjoyed group lunches across Portland without ever encountering this cash-only/one-card-only policy. Today's experience (Wed, June 25) was marked by rudeness, inflexibility, and a complete lack of customer appreciation. We won't be back. read more

I have been to Shandong once since Covid 19 and today I went there for late lunch. It was definitely not as good as I remember it. I ordered pork potsticker and hot and sour soup. I am a big pot sticker fan. The pot stickers were a disappointment, they appear to have been deep fried, rather than pan fried and steamed. The filling was pretty tasteless. The tables/chairs have been changed and the chairs are more comfortable. They have soy sauce, vinegar and chili oil on the table - which is great , but outsides of the bottles were pretty dirty. The lunch menu is basically the same as the dinner menu for noodle dishes - just smaller price and quantity. I didn't try those today. What I recall before was very fresh dough used. read more

Went to Shandong for lunch this week with my bestie. When we go out, we over order so we have leftovers and can try several things. Comfortable setting with booths and tables. Seems like the owner is the waitress. We tried the pot stickers. They were big, but more dough than meat. Tasty, but bready and they did not have the traditional dipping sauce and the waitress pointed me to the soy sauce. Ok but not great. The hot and sour soup was a bell ringer. Good hot and sour soup is the rest of and Asian kitchen, in my estimation. The sautéed green beans were plump and juicy. Quite nice! Last to arrive was the Tan Tan noodles. Interesting texture, lovely sauce. They arrived late enough that we mostly took them home and enjoyed them for lunch the next day. If you asked me, I would say that this place is pretty solid. The Kung Pao Beef was amazing, I ordered the medium heat and it was delicious! Next time I may spice it up (pun intended) and go a little hotter. The meat and peppers were cooked perfectly. Best potstickers I've ever had. I'm not vegan and I love the vegetarian potstickers. Dined here and tried spinach potstickers, tofu fried rice, sizzling rice soup and shandong chicken. So it tried to order and the waiter was rude and told they're closing even though not until an hour. We opted for two items, cashew chicken and sweet and sour pork. The cashew chicken lacked flavor, with chicken pieces coated in a sticky white sauce. While a few cashews were included, the addition of a lone green pea seemed out of place. Additionally, the sweet and sour pork was disappointing as it lacked the promised red bell peppers. My friend even had to search her plate and only found two small pieces. I think this place is solid for their homemade noodles, dumplings and potstickers. We ordered all 3 and the people in our party liked them but I think all of the other food was over sauced or starchy. I ordered eggplant, Brussel sprouts and green beans, thinking those would be a healthier option. The dry fried Brussel sprouts are probably my favorite thing and the rest all were dripping in thick sauces. We ordered "prawns" and Mongolian beef and I was not impressed with the food because I do not like eating a lot of sweet sauce on my food. The prawns definitely had some sweet sauce that wasn't good on them. The Mongolian beef was also saucy and the meat I think was coated with corn starch and thick sauce and not a lot of onions with it. I would definitely come back for the Brussel sprouts but all the rest were a hard pass for me and I won't be ordering any of it. There are some real winners on this menu combine traditional and American styles Chinese food. The dry fry wings are incredible! Other highlights for us are the Shandong Beef and dumplings. The dumplings were so good we ate them before we could take a picture. Service is quick, plenty of beers available. This is a repeat visit spot for us. We have been going to Shandong for years! We love it! We do have some favorites: The Garlic/Green beans, Mongolian Beef, Moo Shu Chicken, and theGwai Wer Noodles are all fantastic. But the Pot Stickers are the star of the show! The best pot stickers in Portand. by far. Ask the wait staff to show you the 3:2:1 sauce pour for them. I hadn't been here in more than a decade and the last time I was, it was a bit... Pok Pok-y. It's been a while since that's meant anything, so let me explain. At one point in its history, Portland was known for restaurants specializing in some of the best cuisines from around the world--but almost as if viewed through a gauze filter. Pok Pok was the first place I remember it: Highly stylized decor and dress, menus built around signature items, less traditional and more interpretive. Other concepts like P.R.E.A.M., Bollywood Theater and Screen Door fell into this category--"hey, it's regional, but it's Portland!" Shandong had that Portland filter for a bit. There were wait staff supplementing graphic design or marketing gigs by dressing in silk and reenacting some of the more awkward scenes from Garden State. There was a floor show made of the dipping sauces and a spareness to the room and its decor. I don't think owner Henry Liu meant it this way, but it made it feel as if Shandong was ironically distancing itself from the Northern Chinese-inspired Chinese-American cuisine it was serving. That's gone now. Shandong survived the pandemic by switching to a takeout-heavy business and, in many ways, has kind of stuck in that mode. During that transition, the dining room itself became a lot cozier and more lived-in. It looks more like a neighborhood place, where the staff works on orders and prep out front and customers have free rein to make mistakes with their sauces. The future Julliard students are gone, replaced by an attentive and knowledgeable crew that still works with the familiar menu. Judy's Noodles are still there, as are the homemade Xiaolongbao, shrimp dumplings and pot stickers. The curry fried rice remains a can't-miss starch, and the spicy dry fried chicken remains one of Portland's best dishes. I've seen the knocks on Shandong as it exists and, honestly, they seem a bit myopic. No, this isn't Chin's Kitchen, but looking at that place's menu since its visit to "Flavortown" tells me the divide is no longer as wide as it once was. No, it isn't the food theater it once was, but should it be? If you look around Hollywood at Gado Gado, the Bulgogi, Chimcking, Happy Bimbimbap or even Chin's they aren't anything more than they have to be... and almost all of them followed Shandong's lead. After seeing post-pandemic Shandong, I can understand why those who loved its first incarnation might be disappointed. But Henry Liu has Kung Pow! for you across the river if you want a show and a place that looks good on Insta. If you want a comfortable spot that knows its customers, knows its menu and knows what it's about, the real Shandong has arrived. read more

My husband and I LOVE Shandong. We did takeout several times before Covid restrictions were lifted, but were really excited when the dining room opened again a few weeks ago. We also took a friend on our recent visit and she had never been before. Parking can be a bit tricky here, especially if the restaurant is busy. DON'T park in the lot next door as that does not belong to Shandong's and your car will get towed! I don't think the word is out yet that they're open for dining inside and since we were there a bit early, we were set. Like many Chinese restaurants, there are SO MANY OPTIONS!! We started off with appetizers; xiao long bao, dumplings and 2 orders of happy hour wontons. We did the pork kind AND the crab. These are some of my favorite wontons ever, mostly because they have meat. Many (especially cheap) places don't fill the wontons. Xiao Long Bao are pretty good and larger than others I've had. For entrees, we had grilled eggplant with chicken, beef and broccoli, pork belly fried rice and chicken and snow peas. Everything was so delicious! The beef and broccoli is my favorite anywhere; flavorful and tender. I feel happy and loved when I eat it. My husband always loves the grilled eggplant and can't ever get enough. The other dishes were also great, my friend especially raving about the crunchy snowpeas and the delicious pork belly.
