I've had Xin Ding Dumpling House bookmarked for over a year, so I was excited to finally cross it off my list while visiting family. Since we had our dog with us, we ordered everything to go and enjoyed it back at our hotel just down the street. Just a heads up if you're planning the same, there wasn't any outdoor dining available. Being from the SF Bay Area, one of the first things we looked for was Har Gow and Siu Mai, but they weren't labeled the way we're used to. After asking, we found out the Crystal Shrimp Dumplings are their Har Gow, and the Shrimp Siu Mai contains pork, which was exactly what we were looking for. We ordered two of each. We also ordered two Beef Chow Fun, Combination Fried Rice, Eggplant with Minced Pork, Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs, and three pear sodas. The dim sum absolutely hit the spot. The Har Gow and Siu Mai were well seasoned, nicely prepared, and exactly what we had been craving. The Beef Chow Fun was another winner. We were glad we ordered two because we found ourselves reaching for it more than the fried rice. The Eggplant with Minced Pork was also delicious. The eggplant was cooked perfectly -- tender without becoming mushy -- and the seasoning was right on point. I'm also glad we changed our order from the House Special Spare Ribs to the Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs. Unlike many versions, these weren't battered and fried, so the pork maintained a great texture while still being coated in a flavorful sweet and sour sauce. One unexpected favorite was the pear soda. It's made with Asian pear, so the flavor is much lighter and more refreshing than the sweeter pear sodas we're used to. The only hiccup? They're bottled with a traditional cap, and since we were staying in a hotel, we quickly realized we didn't have a bottle opener. Let's just say we got a little creative. One thing I really appreciated was that the staff noticed our large takeout order and packed it thoughtfully. They included six extra takeout containers, plenty of forks, chopsticks, and napkins, which ended up being incredibly helpful since we were eating in a hotel room with no paper plates or utensils. It's a small gesture, but one that definitely didn't go unnoticed. Overall, we were really happy with our meal. This place lived up to being on my bookmark list for over a year, and I'd happily come back the next time we're staying in downtown Portland. read more

I've been trying to explore more restaurants on the Vancouver side so I don't always have to drive into Portland. I randomly spotted this place while heading to the movies one night, bookmarked it, and finally came back to try it. We came on a Wednesday night and the restaurant was surprisingly busy, but the staff was very friendly and we were seated right away. We ordered the pork and shrimp XLB, garlic green beans, dry pot spare ribs, and spicy fish. Overall, everything was really good and I'd happily order all of the dishes again. The XLB were juicy, and the dry pot dishes had a lot of flavor. My only small complaint was that I wish the green beans were a little less saucy and more crispy. One of the staff members mentioned they have two other locations as well. Definitely planning to come back with a group of friends next time so we can order even more dishes to share! read more

saw people saying this was an alternative for din tai fung and i'm glad to say that I like it just as much as dtf! another perk of xin ding is that the menu is more expansive. my favorite dish was the stir fried cabbage. it was so flavorful but still maintained the crunch. dan dan noodles were well done with a creamy mala sauce. this is the first time i've been served an egg with my dan dan noodles and that was a nice addition. green onion pancakes were crispy, light, and not too oily. xiao long baos were super juicy. honey walnut shrimp was a table favorite as well. the only dish that disappointed me was the chongqing chicken as I felt the batter was too thick. read more

Thank you to my fellow Yelpers. This place has good food. The staff are attentive. It is super quiet. The inside is fairly large and can accommodate larger groups in singular round tables with lazy susans in the middle for family style dining. I ordered the Pork and vegetable dumplings with chicken chow mein and lychee lemon drop martini. Loved it all. I couldn't finish the food but made a valiant attempt. I wish I had a refrigerator and microwave in my hotel room to have taken a to go box. I enjoyed it so much that I returned two days later. Got the chicken chow mein again. Slightly switched it up and pork and vegetables potstickers. During my second visit, I noticed that the restaurant did not have AC. The temperature inside was a little on the warm side. Fans were working overtime. But get a cold drink with ice and you are all good. The pot stickers were fried and came with a coating fusing them together. The portion that was fried to the bottom of the pan was sort of caramelized. It was tough and made it more difficult to eat. I had to cut the bottom of the pot sticker off as I couldn't eat it. I stopped here after a busy Saturday exploring Oregon and it was the best end to my night. I arrived around 9:35pm. The restaurant is big and it still seemed very busy. We put ourselves in the waitlist, explored outside and received our food around 9:56pm. The ambiance was dark, cozy but lively with so many people. Customer service was good. We ordered the Beef Chow Fun and the custard buns. I asked for their chili on the side and it was soooo good. Both dishes were 10/10, I cannot wait to come back here. Great portion sizes to share as well. My only regret is not ordering another two plates or even bringing more custard buns home! I guess it's a plus, because it gives me another reason to come back! We saved it from the won tons with chili oil and smothered the rest of the meal with it. The best part was the service. Jason was great! In a weekday it wasn't busy which was convenient for quick seating and service. We came in here with wanting to try a lot on their menu because it was a recommended spot! The garlic green beans were tasty and came with white rice (lunch special). I loved the chili wontons and pork and shrimp xiao long bao the most. Portions were large and perfect for shareables. What I wouldn't order again would be the salt and pepper chicken wings they just weren't my favorite but also stared to get full by the time they came out. We came at 11 PM and the waiters were not attentive and we had a long wait to get seated despite empty tables. 3/5 sketchy neighborhood. Was recommended this spot for the best dumplings. And they were right. I dropped by and was seated quickly by the wait staff. Brought me out a water and I gave a quick look at the menu. Already knew what I wanted and that was the Pork xiao long bao soup dumplings. It came in a steam basket and it's more than enough for one person to eat or share in a group setting. I came here on a weekend evening, and it was decently busy but there was no wait time to get a table and sit down. The service was pretty good, but the food could have been better. The pork xiao long baos were alright at first, and I liked how thin the wrappers were. The top swirl felt extra thick and was chewy, so I didn't enjoy eating that part. The flavor wasn't bad at first, but the more I ate, the more I realized the soup could have used more seasoning. The shrimp shu mai was pretty bad. I couldn't taste any shrimp flavor and could only feel little crunchy bits I was chewing on. There was minimal flavor in them, and even though I hardly ever eat my food with soy sauce and vinegar, I needed to dip the shrimp shu mai in the soy sauce and vinegar to make it palatable enough to eat. We ordered delivery so I cannot speak to the cleanliness or friendliness of the restaurant and staff. Our food was delivered on time. We ordered the chicken broccoli, pork fried rice, beef chow fun and shrimp dumplings. Everything was packaged well. The shrimp dumpling and chicken broccoli were the highlights with the fried rice a close second. The beef chow fun lacked taste even though the beef was very tender. We ordered four dishes, and everything was served steamy hot and was absolutely delicious. There were also other items on the menu that we'd like to try, so I'm sure we'll be coming back again. The price was a little on the pricey side, perhaps? But it was much much better than "Din Tai Fung" by far. It's worth it! Just hosted a birthday dinner for 12 here. There are no bad dishes. You have to try the handmade soup dumplings and the noodle dishes. Everything comes out hot and fresh with great flavor? Our family dines here often. Do yourself a favor and forego the excessive wait time and preciousness of Din Tai Fung. Came in here ready to do some damage after a long morning walking around Portland & crossing the river twice. After taking down a Tsingtao & a full order of xiao long bao I opted to forgo another menu item & try out a different dumpling spot for pan fried dumplings. My friend really likes this place and compares it to places like DTF and she claims that this place is better in quality, price and taste! We came here on a Sunday evening and it was pretty busy but we somehow managed to grab a table at the bar, and eat quickly before my flight! The Sichuan dishes here are really good, I loved the crispy chicken and fish we got and the pork XLB was so so good. Definitely fills you up! 8-8.5/10 Overall, I have to say despite the food tasting good (generally 8/10) service was extremely slow and we felt intentionally ignored it was so bad! Many others were attended to well after we had been seated and waited after us. Waiters would look us (we sat in the middle of the restaurant) and walk by, helping others. We finally asked a busboy to get our waiter (he didn't speak English) but non verbally indicated he would get others. Someone came by a few minutes later and did t take our order but said they would get someone for us (which took an additional almost 10 minutes). Given the service (slow orders arriving as well) we would not eat here again. Location is not in the best area either. This used to be the old Thirsty Lion establishment. They converted it over to this dumpling house and I was pretty impressed. It does seem higher end, kind of like the feel of Din Tai Fung. Service staff was great and receptive to our needs. Ok now to get to the food, we started with the pork xiao long bao. The savory pork mixture with the soup mix was a very flavorful combination. The wonton wrappers were thin and twisted evenly. They held well in the bamboo steamers. The combination chow mein was pretty good. The noodles had a nice al dente chew and pull to them. It was very satisfying to eat. The egg on top was a little overdone. The cherry on top was the honey walnut shrimp. The outer coating was incredibly crispy with a coating of luscious honey mayonnaise. The caramelized walnuts were a perfect accompaniment. Instead of the usual wilted bed of lettuce that it is typically on, there was some fresh broccoli that really hit the spot. Lastly, we got some drinks. The white peach sake martini was a nice balanced, fruity drink. The crowd pleaser was definitely the lychee martini. The fruit was well highlighted without the vodka being too overbearing. This place was a real treat. If we are craving soup dumplings or the honey walnut shrimp, this is the place to be. read more

We went to Xin Ding to celebrate a friend's birthday. From the start, it's not a great experience checking in with the iPad and not being greeted by anyone and the service just spirals downhill from there. The service was kind of weird/awkward about IDing us for drinks. I assured her I was happy to grab my ID and she was kind of rude, alluding to the fact I look old and she doesn't need it haha. As our food started to come, our friend noticed a long black hair in the chicken dumplings. We notified our server and she investigated the dish on our table. This rubbed us all the wrong way because you should believe your customer and take the plate from the table and maybe exam it in the back/kitchen? We didn't like the hair deter us and everything was truly delicious. We had pork soup buns (good, but not very soup-y), pork wontons in chili oil (yum!), chicken potstickers (probably my favorite), spicy chow mein (delicious), the dry fried green beans (so good)! We were stuffed. I ended up telling the server that we wouldn't need the new chicken dumplings and she was very rude and taken back by that. I feel bad to inconvenience them, but none of it would've happened if there wasn't a hair in the food? There were other small, rude things our server did but ultimately, it didn't ruin our night or take away from the delicious food! The pork and leek dumplings had a wrapper that was too thick from what I'm used to and not steamed enough to be succulent. The General Tso's Chicken was dry chicken and an almost flavorless glaze. The eggplant with garlic sauce was nicely done but needed a splash of black vinegar which was table side so OK. We found this dumpling house through Apple Maps and decided to give it a try. The restaurant itself is surprisingly large, and the food ended up being pretty good but the service was definitely lackluster. When we walked in, there was a sign that said "Please wait here to be seated," so we did. We waited around 15-20 minutes, making eye contact with several employees and even other guests in line, but no one acknowledged us. Eventually, we asked an employee how to get seated, and only then were we told that we had to sign in on an iPad to join the queue. It was confusing and frustrating, especially since the sign and the process completely contradict each other. We even helped two other groups figure out the iPad check-in because they were also being ignored. After signing in, we waited another 20 minutes before being seated. Once at the table, we ordered chicken dumplings, orange chicken, noodles, and beef and broccoli. The portions are very generous, and everything was flavorful, except the chicken dumplings, which lacked seasoning. Overall, I'd say this place is worth trying for the food and large portions, but just be prepared for some confusing (and very hands-off) service. read more

Restaurant itself was large and could seat large parties at family style tables. Pork Xiao Long Bao - dumplings came out perfect temp but lacked in flavor. Left this dish unfinished. Wontons in Chili Sauce - mostly oil and like the other dish lacking flavor. We left these unfinished as well. Beef Chow Fun (Not Pictured) - looked the most promising! Noodles were great texture and wanted to love this dish. However, similar to the others lacked flavor. Unfortunately, this should be a skip on our Portland itinerary. read more

This place is worth the wait, if there is one when you go. We probably waited ~30 minutes for a 3-person table on a weekend night and absolutely LOVED our meal. We split the sweet and sour chicken, bao buns, and spicy beef chow mein. Every last bite was SO delicious. Things come out as they are ready so you get a nice hot dish with freshly cooked food. The ambiance is really cool; nicely decorated spot and somehow doesn't feel super loud even when it's packed. We cannot wait to go back to try more off the menu! read more
