I had heard some good reviews about this place so even with misgivings about a buffet, we decided to check it out. First off, when we walked in, there was a moldy old smell that made my stomach turn. In the seating area, it seemed like they had a flooding problem or something since they had black tarp, garbage bag plastic type material all along the ceiling and some foam type sealant. The food was nothing that I would care to go back or even eat. The desserts where even sliced on styrofoam plates. This is two stars as I experienced some other abyssmally bad food on my trip that was even worse. You won't starve here,... but I hardly found anything to be appetizing. I did not find any real BBQ on the buffet. There was some chicken, slathered with sauce,... nothing that was slow cooked with wood. The food HAS been sitting around. Most is fatty, low grade, mysterious,.... and sweetened. It seemed to me that the collard greens were crunchy / gritty with sugar. Yuk. The quality struck me as equivalent to cafeteria food in a high school (institutional quality). Service was fine, for a buffet style restaurant, and the people were nice. I stay in Durham so every time I'm in the area i try my best to go here. I absolutely love the popcorn shrimp and the collards. The buffet is filled with great southern options (collards, cabbage, turnips, macaroni, fried and bbq chicken, pulled pork, dumplings, cobbler etc)and the food is always nice and warm. The staff is constantly adding food and keeping everything tidy. The servers are as about as good as it gets with buffet restaurants. Watch out for weekend crowds, it definitely gets busy. You want some soul food? This is the place to go. My friends and I firmly believe there are 10 grandma's back in the kitchen, churning away at the mashed potatoes, popping roast in the oven, and making desserts from scratch. I think you would have to make two trips if you want to try all this food. Fried chicken is soooooooo good. Not to mention the mac and cheese, fried okra, biscuits, sausage....And the sweet tea is delicious. Just the right amount of tea and sugar. I'm from AL so I know what good sweet tea is :) In fact, I asked for a to-go cup. They can also serve it in a mason jar if you like. Southern hospitality. The list of food is endless. Why 5 stars? I found this place about 5 years ago and kept coming back. I live 5 hours away, and have thought about coming here just for the food. This place has everything you could want out of southern cooking. Well ok, most anything... but... Please understand, I am from Chicago. I only pretend to know southern food. My favorites here in order are the fried chicken, cracklings, BBQ, mashed potatoes and gravy. Holy cow. I can't think of anything I didn't like here. There is a little of everything here, and they add a carving station for dinner. The portions of the desserts are small, but by the time that rolls around, you don't have much space there for dessert. Right??? Servers are really friendly and your cup never goes empty. AND... they opened a second place in Fayetteville (new location I think). I think this was to take advantage of the military crowd, because I think Hope Mills is a little far for a Ft. Bragg lunch break. My only complaints? The long lines on the weekend (it just means they are that good!), and they only have pink lemonade. And I gain 5lbs after every visit. Thank God for running! And I have to say this. The fried chicken was really salty this time around. I mean salty bad. Still, the fried chicken is my favorite here. Wow huge buffet! Country cooking at it's best and excellent prices! My favorites are the fried chicken, very crispy and even the breast was juicy throughout and not from oil, mashed potatoes where thick, tasty and awesome! The meatloaf was excellent and perfectly cooked and juicy. The vegetables where excellent but some where overly salty for my taste. The fried pork chops where good as well. The ice cream machine was a nice surprise and very good addition to their many dessert offerings. Service is also excellent because every time I my tea was close to empty it was refilled immediately. We where traveling through NC on I-95 and didn't know where to go for a great sit down meal and so of course we pull out yelp just-in-time! As we found it there was the exit and sure enough it was conveniently located just off the exit. Got a good laugh off the street name as well :-). All-in-all an excellent alternative to the traveling standard of Cracker Barrel. Plus you get so much more food for LESS $. Dinner cost us $29 for 2 Adult and 1 child where Cracker Barrel usually costs us about $35 for the 3 of us. read more

Sweet Tea and country buffet with Carolina BBQ!!! Yes please! The Carolina vinegar BBQ was amazing, along with the hushpuppies n corn patties. They have rolls and biscuits. Huge selection of country veggies was awesome! Field peas n snaps, stewed tomatoes, butter beans, limas, corn, cabbage, green beans, baked beans, collards or maybe they were mustard or turnip greens, yams, mashed potatoes. They have fried okra n fried squash in the back so make sure u ask for it! So very good!!! They had fried chicken, meatloaf, a bunch of fried seafood but I don't like seafood. They had pork cracklins...on the buffet! They just needed to be fried a bit longer so they're crunchy not chewy. The Mac n cheese had too much black pepper for my liking. They have the vinegar at the table for ur greens, Beans and more in ur BBQ if u like. They have my fave Tabasco pepper vinegar sauce. Yum! Homemade desserts! The banana pudding was good but not as good as ours! The peach cobbler crisp was to die for! The chocolate cake was just okay. If ur in the Fayetteville, NC area come try it! This is the place for real Southern food; you wont be able to eat this everyday and stay at your present weight, but when you have it, it is sooo good... Once you enter their restaurant, you are made to feel at home. Fred Chason's Grandsons works as a pre-pay buffet: you pay at the door, name your soft-drink, then find (or share) a table. As your host may say, "you can't miss the food". Two huge steam tables fill one room and the selection is nearly endless. If you are not from the South, ask your waitress to explain the offerings. Meh. We had this on the way to South Carolina. We were starving and in the middle of nowhere, and a gas station attendant told us that this was the best place to go in the area. I love a good country buffet, but this was mediocre at best. A 3 might be generous, but I ate my fill and nothing was actually "bad" so I will stick with that. I think instead of having 400,000* items on the buffet, they should probably work on improving a handful of their dishes into good dishes and leave off the extraneous filler. There was actually too much variety for me, a rare complaint for a buffet. Less variety, more specialization would do them well. I recall the roasted chicken being good, along with the dessert. Most of the food was rather forgettable, but it was all reasonably enjoyable for the low price of the lunch buffet. The staff was friendly, which was good. You pay up front, which was weird. Did they have a problem with people skipping out on the bill? Of people complaining and refusing to pay? I dunno. Either way, you can't get to a table without being herded by the cash register and told to pay for your party. I grew up in Alabama and to me this restaurant is almost like going to a church picnic anytime you want. So homy and inviting. I love that they offer a cheese block with the soup bar, I never seem to find that anywhere and that's one of my favorite ways to eat soups. My favorite dishes are the ribs, hushpuppies, and the barbecue chicken. However I'm not a fan of the side items like green beans and black eyed peas, they all taste canned and over salted to me. We got halfway through our plates before we even got our drinks--that's only because we kept looking at the hostess. It seemed almost every meat dish available was dry. And, there's plenty of it. When I come here and there is a line at the door, no worries. I know I'm about to have some great grub at an affordable price in a family friendly atmosphere, around a whole bunch of folks that can appreciate what you know to be true. They provide a very welcomeing down home country feel. Dispite having a very loyal local fan base, Grandsons just wasn't that special. It was rather disappointing given the hype. I don't much like buffets, greasy barbecue, or menus made up of 90% fried highly saturated fat. That's why I give it 2 stars. Bottom line the quality and variety isn't there, unless you just want to suck down saturated fat in large portions. I was on 95 heading to NYC and I stopped in. AMAZING find thanks to yelp. It was Friday an on the dinner menu they had fried oysters so asked "how much $ to add the oysters"? This place is absolutely fantastic, hands down the best food I've had in Fayetteville since moving here about six months ago. The pulled pork is absolutely perfect and a brilliant representation of what Carolina style pulled pork should be. The only negative side is they don't have a selection of hot sauce outside of plain old boring hot sauce/vinegar to add. I prefer some CHS sauce on mine, but luckily the flavor is so amazing you don't need anything else. The price is just right and the service is also pretty fantastic. The sweet tea doesn't taste like syrup water, it's balanced just right as well! I will say the quality of the food is hit or miss. Sometimes you'll go and have the most fantastic mac and cheese you've ever eaten, and on other days it will be some of the worst. The chicken is fantastic and the beans/rice are seasoned very well. So on a nice little journey up I95, I was looking for some good southern food.. The restaurant is conveniently located, decor is wood picnic type booths. I tried to keep it simple since I am not too big on buffets. I had catfish, flounder, meatloaf and some baked chicken- all of which were very tasty. All of the vegetables- beans, collards, etc were cooked well and had wonderful flavor. So I came here after a long trip to eat and coming from New York is not great. This restaurant has good service but not good food. I saw this place with 4 stars thinking it would be good and was disappointed by what I saw. The food has no labels on it so you don't know what your even getting and when you realize the hand sanitizer is above the food,it's disgusting. I found this place on yelp while traveling north on 95. We were looking for some good NC BBQ, and this place was the best reviewed and closest to the interstate (we were too far away from Wilson!). The chopped pork and BBQ sauce was good - not the best I've ever had but no complaints! The collards, Lima beans, and butter beans were excellent - solid southern food. Everyone in this area seems to love this restaurant, I'm not from NC so maybe that's why I feel that this place is more for people who enjoy more quantity over quality. The food here is mediocre at best, I've had much better fried chicken in NC than at this restaurant.. They also offer small fried shrimps, and a few different fried fish (none of them were labeled so I have no idea what kind they were) again I've had better.. they also had other meat offerings like a meatloaf (I didn't try it because it didn't even look good) a Salisbury steak that tasted like noting, chicken pot pie (again I didn't try it because it looked like it had been sitting for quite a while) pork BBQ, sliced ham and chicken and pastry. They also offer the typical assortment of NC veggies; corn, green beans, cabbage, carrots etc. and and assortment of beans as well ( looked like a bunch of canned veg) Nothing I tried was anything I'd go back for, I found the food was either overly salty or bland. I tried the lemon melange pie and a lemon cake for dessert and again.. meh. In conclusion, I think that if you're looking for a lot of food for a low price and the quality isn't that important to you, you will probably enjoy this place. I haven't eaten at Grandsons in over a year, the last visit was awful due to the extreme heat and lack of air conditioning. My boyfriend was literally pouring sweat. Against my better judgment I gave the restaurant another try today. My boyfriend and I along with my newborn went about 6 pm hoping we had beaten the early Sunday traffic. After being charged $28.00 and waiting over 7 minutes for a hostess we were seated. Almost every item we attempted to eat was either too dry, too tough, lacked flavor, or had simply been on the bar for entirely too long under the heat lamps. I had high hopes for Grandsons today but was disappointed beyond my own belief. I don't have money to throw away and won't be eating here again. Truly disappointed!!! read more

I'm trying to think of a reason this humble place isn't 5 star worthy, and I got nothing. We arrived for lunch just as they opened, which we always try to do when eating buffet style. Food is better when it's fresh, and this food was delicious. The volume and variety alone is impressive, with enough offerings that you could dine here often and not repeat the same meal. There were two kinds of greens (collards and turnip greens, I think), baked beans, crowder peas and black eyed peas, chicken both fried and baked, as well as a chicken pot pie, pulled pork, fried catfish, broiled fish, meatloaf, and more veggies than I could commit to memory, although I will say that the corn tasted like it had been shucked that morning. Everything I tried was well seasoned and properly cooked. Usually on any buffet, no matter how good, there are a few items that I think, "We'll, next time I'll skip that". That did not happen here.
