My girlfriend is from the south and has a number of secret recipes from restaurants down there, one of which is a shrimp Poboy, which is spectacular. This one was a little bit better. Super fresh bread, crazy flavorful shrimp, remoulade...crispy lettuce and tomato...Pickles if you want them... And the secret ingredient is Cholula hot sauce that they have at the table. Everything we ate at Fred's Around the Corner was packed with flavor and so, so good. We started with the dip trio - beer cheese, black bean hummus, pimento cheese. While they were all good, the hummus was definitely our fave. My husband got the Philly cheesesteak with a side of red beans and rice, and loved it. I ordered the soppin shrimp in garlic parmesan sauce - it was rich and creamy and so good. I also had one of the best side Caesar salads I've had in a long time. It's located in Knox Brew Hub which is nice for those that would love a beer with their food and appreciate a louder scene than your typical restaurant. Nice environment. Really enjoyed the bar and the bartender was excellent. The service was very slow for the food. I understand when we were there just five days after they opened; the kitchen was still figuring things out. The food itself was delicious. My son had the beans and rice. I had a bowl And my wife enjoyed her sandwich very much so all good as far as the quality of the food. I was a little disappointed nobody ever checked back or mentioned about things being slow in the kitchen. I had to ask about it. I think it took about 45 minutes to get our food maybe a little longer. read more

I've found it difficult to determine if restaurants have vegan options in Knoxville, since many notate Vegetarian options. Upon asking I often find out that the Vegetarian option happens to also be Vegan. Beans and rice can be tricky when eating out since beans are often make with lard or ham and rice with animal based broth, so I need to ask. We were hoping Fred's Vegetarian Beans & Rice would also be vegan. We asked and were told they are not since they are both made with Worcestershire sauce, rendering them NOT vegan. We were told we could get a garden salad and take some things off of it. As a result, we couldn't eat here and had to go elsewhere. They were very nice, but unfortunately it didn't work out. read more

It's usually very quiet, but this day they were broadcasting a soccer game along with hosting some very vociferous fans. So it was a bit loud...until the game ended. The staff is friendly, helpful and efficient. We ordered our beers at the bar, then chose our seats and reviewed the menu. After making our selection, we returned to the bar to place our order and be re-seated. The Brunch Shrimp Tacos (Naughty but Nice) were excellent. Great flavor without being too spicy. I enjoyed the potato salad as well. The side of red beans and rice was a bit too spicy for me though. So my wife ate those! A bartender came around frequently to clear our table and check on us. 10/10 all around. Great atmosphere, great service, out standing food. We are from Florida and came here 2 months ago on a whim the first day of our trip and ate here everyday. Just came back on this second trip and we are so glad we did. Service and food was absolutely top tier. We wanted something that was no longer on the menu and they made it for us anyway and when we asked for a smaller than normal portion they had no problem accommodating the request. After trying to find decent gumbo and red beans & rice at several places around Knoxville I was feeling like nobody has ever had REAL versions of those. That is until I found Fred's Beans & Rice.... The food here is so good I ate mine and got another portion to go for lunch the next day. Walk-Ons, despite having a lot of Cajun/creole choices on the menu was terrible and I would give them a 2/10 and Fred's? Fred's is 145/10, but compared to other places in Knoxville it's 1000/10.
