Its been two instances now that this place has been terrible. I have placed online orders for pick up at 8:45pm and 9pm and im not sure if it's because the employees get lazy the hour before closing time (closing time is 9:30pm) but this is the second time that my food was poor quality and small portions. First time the food was cold and im not sure if they ran out of tortilla strips but they put a handful of broken chips instead. Tonight my steak was raw and the portions were ridiculously small (maybe they got too lazy to make more food) this is completely unacceptable as it is a safety hazard. We were very disappointed to get home and be left with no food to eat tonight after ruling out the steak as inedible. read more

So many choices to choose from. Perfect place to get fulfilling food if you're on a low carb/keto diet. Monster bowl is a huge portion that can make 2-3 meals out of it. They also offer low carb tortillas which is great. Flavorful meat and have some good selection of sauces. Burrito is GINORMOUS. Good service and you get your money's worth. Just placed order and they didn't bother reading the order. This place has gone down and doesn't look like planning to do fox anytime soon. My wife's bowl didn't get the rice, queso, cheese, sour cream not guac she ordered and paid for. She orders a monster bowl and basically a kids bowl showed up. So I'm a Freebirds fan from way back in the day. I used to live in College Station and frequented the Northgate location for years. I've also been to the other locations in College Station and Austin, it's always been consistent. The Freebird burrito is big and completely stuffed. Even with the changes other chains have made over the years, they are still in a league of their own. I do not consider other chains worthy of comparison. Now they do offer more than burritos- bowls, tacos, quesadillas, nachos and salads. However, being my favorite burrito, I rarely stray. The regular size is large enough for 2 meals in my opinion. When I'm not feeling like two burrito meals in a row, I would often get the Hybird, which is closer to a normal big burrito size at other places and still plenty of food. My husband likes to play man vs. food a lot so he would sometimes get the monster, which is ridiculously large. I've never actually been present when anyone has ordered a super monster so I can only assume it's ordered to feed small villages. They offer steak, carnitas, ground beef, chicken and veggie- all of which I've had over the years, but steak is always my go to. I think I saw a 'beyond meat' option which is more recent- a plant based protein mixed with potatoes and spices. I love their huge tortillas, flour and spinach being my favorite. Whole wheat and spicy cayenne are also available. I haven't had their cilantro lime rice because I've always liked their Spanish rice with refried beans (you can get whole or pinto beans as well). Cheese is included and they have a ton of sauces and toppings. The guacamole, queso and avocado are the only toppings that incur an upcharge. Kids meals are limited to burritos and quesadillas. You can get chips as a side, but I can't see that being necessary unless you are sharing a meal. The desserts include brownies, cookies and Magic Mallow Rice Krispy Treats. Needless to say, I was psyched when one opened in Denton and even had a couple of decent visits back when the lines were always out the door. These visits were not as good as the location I used to frequent and the staff was slow, but I figured that was normal (to an extent) in the first few months to a year. However, their consistency over time was just awful and I stopped giving them chances during the early part of summer in 2016 (pre Yelp for me). I got sick of old, hard rice and chewy steak and indifferent staff and never returned. Recently, I saw a really good review from a fellow Yelper which led me to their Yelp page and a multitude of recent, positive reviews. I deemed them worthy of another chance and my husband and I placed an order for delivery Sunday, late afternoon. I ordered a regular size since I was okay with leftovers, those run $8.75 but there is an upcharge for getting steak. My husband ordered a fajita steak quesadilla for $9.50. I also threw on a rice krispy treat for $2.25 The food was delivered lightning fast, way quicker than I expected (off to a good start)! I examined my burrito and it was well wrapped, the right size, nice and full and had no tears. I took a bite and moaned as it was exactly how I remembered it from back in the day. Unfortunately, several minutes later it was clear that there were some issues with this burrito. The sour cream was only on one end, what? A few of the steak pieces were complete fat, ew! Still, we are in 4 stars territory at this point, strays happen and everything tastes great. The biggest problem came with the pieces of old, rock hard rice mixed in with fresher rice. At first, it was a piece here and there. A third through there was a lot more. Somebody added an old crusty batch to the new stuff- not cool. This kept me from fully enjoying my burrito and diminished value as I no longer wanted to save the leftovers. The rice krispy treat was stale too. This place has a fairly small menu, they can't afford to let their ingredients get old or nasty. The brand has higher expectations than that and so do customers. Now I can read, I see the good reviews, so clearly this isn't an all the time thing. However, it's a consistency issue and it negatively impacted my enjoyment quite a bit. I know they can do better. Three stars since I see some improvement and my husband enjoyed his very large quesadilla. Minus 2 stars for inconsistency and besmirching my fond memories... again. read more

Last night my friend was really wanting Freebirds and I can't honestly say I haven't had it in probably a good 7 years, so I was totally down to come check it out again. Prior to arrival we were both thinking since it was a Friday night it was going to be packed, to our surprise it wasn't busy at all. We walked straight into the line and were able to order. I ordered the Freebird with the Spinach tortilla, rice and beans (I let the guy making my burrito decide for me) I chose the seasoned chicken, queso (I was recommended this by my friend since he says adding this to the burrito changes the whole game), cilantro, tomatoes, and grilled veggies. I've been here before so I knew this burrito was gonna he too big to eat (and I was totally fine with that). Wow this burrito was prob the best tasting Freebirds burrito I have ever had. I have a new appreciation for Freebirds. Overall, the visit was pleasant, the place was clean (tables, floors, bathrooms) only thing I was disappointed about was the lack of the decorations, including the cool foil figurines. read more

Genuinely so disappointed. Used to be one of my favorite places to eat but has sadly gone down hill. All the employees here expect one manager are monsters. Making me feel like a bother for wanting my food? It's not just me who they were rude to it was every single customer interactions. While I was being checked out the workers were giving each other looks and making faces. They did the same thing to the women In front of me. The woman who made my burrito and checked me out started getting aggressive when I clearly said "for here " but she was too busy making faces and rolling her eyes to hear me , so she then decided to raise her voice and say "FOR HERE OR TOO GO?!" Free birds needs to teach their employees how to interact with their customers or the generous 3.5 stars they have been gifted will dwindle. If I could give it six stars, I would. Freebirds has some of the best burritos around. They have a wide variety of protein options for all types of preferences, and each are absolutely delicious. The Freebirds staff was attentive and efficient; preparing my burrito quickly and deliciously. The restaurant has a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, and a beautiful outdoor dining area, perfect for the summer. I definitely recommend giving Freebirds your business. read more

My first trip to not just this location but this chain in general and I was very happy. I love the feel of the location and could quickly tell it had roots to Southern California by the vibe. From the music to the decor this place was very chill. Now let's talk about the food... three sizes of burritos or bowls for you to enjoy with an assembly style line of workers taking care of you. Brisket, carnitas, veggie, steak or chicken can be accompanied by rice, beans, veggies, cheese, sauces, sour cream, guacamole in any form and fashion you choose. The only thing I would have liked to have seen different would be a size chart or something to let me see what exactly I was getting into. I've been here twice. The first time was really good! Food looked fresh and tasted great. I recently had it again and the food looked questionable. The food looked like it had been sitting out since the morning crew. I ordered chicken but they were out and currently making it, so I got steak. It destroyed mine and my boyfriend's stomach for 2 days. I'm 100% sure the food was not kept in the proper temperatures for longer than 4hrs. The GM is responsible for checking temperatures and making sure all of his employees are practicing proper hygiene. This is 100% preventable. read more

I really like their carnitas burrito. There are a lot of choices of meats, tempeh, veggies and sauces. I've had the seasoned chicken thigh meat and the carnitas burrito and my favorite is the carnitas. I choose not to take be and rice and ask for extra veggies instead. I've noticed that the burritos are a bit inconsistent. Sometimes the same order varies in size dramatically and sometimes it is very spicy and other times mild. Um, can we just say this place is amazing and be done with it? Alright, alright. I'll go ahead and be more specific. Every time I hear about Freebirds, I generally hear some sort of comparison to Chipotle. This sort of annoys me a bit, because in my opinion there really is no comparison. Freebirds is infinitely better. Period. Why? First: they have TONS more ingredient options than Chipotle does (that includes meat options. Dark meat chicken, anyone?). They even have two options for rice (Spanish or Cilantro Lime White), as opposed to Chipotle's single cilantro lime option. Second: More burrito sizes. You can go from really tiny to the oh-my-god-how-the-hell-am-I-ever-going-to-finish-this Super Monster option. Third: Atmosphere. Tin foil art is all over the place, and this particular location sports a statue of liberty riding a motorcycle and holding up a Super Monster burrito hanging from the cieling. Seriously, the place is trendy, cool, and hires some pretty awesome people. Everyone in there is friendly, SPEAKS ENGLISH, and knows how to have a conversation if the customer wants one. They also know how to shut up and make a burrito if that's all the customer is there for. Fourth: Rewards program. Swipe a card, get a stamp. Get enough stamps, get a free burrito or t-shirt. It's that simple. Fifth: (though this is really on par with Chipotle, but for review purposes it bears mentioning) - Fresh ingredients. Everything in the store is made fresh, right there. Lettuce, tomatoes, meats, guacamole, everything. It's all fresh and tastes accordingly. Do I even need to go on? Probably not. But let's get Denton-specific. In addition to everything I just listed above, the Denton location itself is exceedingly spectacular. I've never encountered a single staff member that wasn't super nice and super helpful. They offer quick service, despite a line that sometimes wraps around the building. Management definitely does a good job of making sure that they're staffed for the rush. Also, the staff is clearly well trained. I've been to other similar burrito places (ahem, Chipotle) and had my burrito fall apart within five seconds of partially unwrapping it (despite using the banana peel technique) due to poor wrapping. At the Denton Freebirds? It's never happened, which I greatly appreciate. Nobody wants to be the guy eating a burrito with a fork, do they? All in all, I effing love this place. My first time at a Freebirds was long before they spread up to North Texas. I had visited one in Austin over at The University of Texas. It was big and it was gooood. I had wished it would come up here, a few years later they invaded Dallas and all points in the DFW area. This is some good food, and I hope you're hungry. You can get different size burritos, but the Monster is where it's at. The Super Monster is for gluttons for punishment....They also offer salads, tacos and quesadillas for the kiddos. Variety is a big thing here, just like at Chipotle, but there are a few more options to choose from at Freebirds. Type of tortilla, rice, cheese, salsas, meats and veggies, plus add guac and sour cream if you choose. Added bonus... the "Pot" brownies, are really great! Tortillas, meats, and cheese go to Freebirds. Rice and veggies goes to Chipotle. Salsas are a tie. Both equally good and both very filling. Enjoy. read more

First of all they gave my autistic daughter tomatoes when she clearly stated she didn't want them. Sounds like some employees need to clean their ears. I love free birds but I can never eat it again after how nasty this location was. My "salad" had three pieces of lettuce and was basically nasty soup. I use to be a worker at Freebirds and found my experience there to be awesome. The workers are friendly, polite, helpful, and just all around fun. The food is amazing, as always. NACHO FAN GIRL. Taylor is the best!! She's super helpful, so nice, and does an awesome job running the place. My only complaint is the general manager. In front of customers, he would scream at the workers. Another complaint is that he would stand in the back and watch while other workers were taking care of the rush instead of giving a hand. Tried this place for the first time this evening. The lack of customers at the restaurant should have been a sign. The food is nothing special. Most of it is dried out or old. The lettuce and corn salsa, which I typically get at other similar establishments, looked especially questionable.The queso was.....interesting. Yes, an unpleasant type of "interesting." I was just not a fan of the taste. Speaking of taste, the food has hardly any flavor. Employees are incredibly stingy with the amounts of ingredients on each order. There are some things that Freebirds gets right: - lot's of options (different types of tortillas, queso, different types of cheeses, different sizes of burritos, nachos, quesadillas, etc) - great, fun, interesting atmosphere (people make all types of tin foil art and leave it around the restaurant) - the food is tasty, but nothing stands out, it's good but not great Then there are things that Freebirds gets wrong: - lot's of options are available, but if you want them...they'll be a charge for that...do you want queso with that? (ka-ching), sour cream (ka-ching), chicken, white or dark, white (ka-ching), guacamole (ka-ching), you get the picture. By the time you get to the end of the line, you're reasonably priced burrito of $6-7 (for smaller sizes) may have ballooned above the $10 mark! - the great, fun, interesting atmosphere, while visually stimulating, translates into a very LOUD restaurant, making conversation difficult at best. - the soda drinks offered are Pepsi based products...in my book that's a negative! - the food is tasty, but nothing stands out...nothing here to CRAVE.
