I've bought bikes and have been having them serviced at Freewheeler for many years. Their customer service is excellent, and I feel I've never been overcharged. Yesterday I was getting ready to ride home from work for the day and I had a flat tire. I walked my bike three blocks to Freewheeler expecting to have to leave it because it was only 45 minutes from their closing time. I had an excellent experience here, and will return whenever I need to! From browsing to buying, Sheri (who was there every time I went) is approachable, knowledgeable, and helpful. She knows what she's talking about and she explains things in a way that's easy to understand. This bike shop is, however, pretty serious! It's the only authorized Trek dealer around, so if you want to buy a Trek or need yours fixed, you can rest assured that the bike will be in good hands! This shop has some Pure Fixes, Giants, etc, but most noticeable are the Trek bikes. In addition to bicycles, they sell handlebars, seats, lights, locks, riding gear, water bottle holders, and more. Great selections! I got my bike after a couple of helpful conversations with Sheri, who didn't try to push any sales on me! The bike was a great price, too! They had to order it online because they don't carry that model in-store, but shipping was fast - Kevin called me 2 days after I placed my order! When I went to pick up the bike, Sheri installed a kickstand and adjusted the seat for me. The bike works perfectly! I love this place! read more

I have taken my bike in for tune-ups, tire replacement, etc for the last few years. Always prompt and excellent service. On the day before Christmas I was on a ride and my rear derailleur cable broke. I called them at 12:15 and they were closing at 1pm. Jeff said that he was staying until 2 and could fix it by then. Sure enough- all fixed by 1:45pm. Jeff was super understanding and my bike is in great shape. I cannot say enough about the service of this place. As a UCD student, my bike is a very important part of my day-to-day life, so as you can imagine, I was distraught when my derailleur stopped shifting correctly and my chain fell off every 10 seconds. Like most other students, I went to the Bike Barn (student run, UCD funded bike shop on campus) to find out what was going on, but in my quick 2 minute consultation, they couldn't really pinpoint a problem. Their only solution was a basic tuneup which would take TWO WEEKS because they were so backed up (not their fault, the Bike Barn is popular). So, I looked on Yelp for another bike shop and stumbled on Freewheeler. As soon as I walked in, they were able to help me out and figure out what was wrong with the bike. Not only that, but they were able to fix the problem AND do some basic tuning I had neglected to do in less than 24 hours! And for cheaper than the bike barn too! These folks are very knowledgeable, helpful, honest and kind. My wife and i bought a pair of bikes here a few years ago and i've been in for flat repair and various upgrades. Like a good car mechanic they are willing to talk you through the important stuff. Also - this appears to be an actual family business, which i think is important to support. There is another bike shop down the street for if you want to go a little faster, and there's another one around the corner if you want the biggest pink pannier, but for multi taskers like me who want to commute around efficiently: this is my favorite bike shop in town. read more

Been here several times for various needs and have always had wonderful service by knowledgeable staff. This is the place if you're looking for a Trek bike. If there's something Trek you're looking for, it might take a while, but they can order it. They also have great tools or accessories, not necessarily Trek. They've got great Trek kids' bikes too, but they're pricey for kids' bikes for me. Don't get me wrong, they are regular price though and great quality. I just can't justify spending that much on bikes that my younger kids will outgrow in about 2 years. I did, however, get my oldest a 24 Trek Cruiser (since this is one she probably won't outgrow as fast) which she loves. I personally like the hybrids. read more

Excellent Customer Care!!! We just bought our 3.5 yr old her first bike at Freewheeler. The staff was very helpful and friendly. They had to pull the color of bike we wanted from the back. Without hesitation they took the bike out of the box and built it for us before we even told them we would purchase it. Two people worked on putting together the bike and it was solidly and safely built. After hours of joyful bike riding the training wheels started to squeak so we took the bike back to get it checked. The staff took care of the squeak, made a few tweaks and added more grease. The bike is now squeak free! We will definitely shop here again due to the awesome customer care!!! read more

How do I start a review about this family-owned business that tries SO hard to be as professional, competent, and just plain NICE folks!? The owner brothers (Jeff and Kevin) have their kids (now fully grown) working there for years, and somehow, they're all so caring with even some of us "difficult" Davisites (yeah, . . . we can really be picky and hard-to-please sometime...). First of all I'm going to preface that I'm new to the whole biking scene so take what I have to say with a grain of salt--- The staff at Freewheeler was very helpful in helping me to pick out a commuter bike. They were very patient with me and answered all of my questions. I shopped around a bit and am thus far very satisfied with my purchase from Freewheeler. My new bike came with free adjustments for 3 mos and a half price tune up w/in the next 18 mos. From shopping around Davis my impression was that Freewheeler sells quality bikes even for those of us who are just looking for something simple. Other stores were either only for high end bikes or over-priced low quality bikes. In summary: I like my bike (but will update after a time to be truly accurate in my review) and I really enjoyed the customer service. I came in the store today to look for a particular bike I saw online, I am new to the whole biking commute and I wanted a reliable bike when I go to school, so C(K)athy? helped me. You can tell they really care about customers; they come to you right away and ask the right questions. I was able to test the bike around the block, use Trek financing, and able to get the basket I wanted on my bike. Kevin was really great too, he helped finish the transaction and it went smoothly. He taught me how to properly lock my bike too. They are all very friendly! Actually, I didn't have the right car to take my new bike back home, so they were able to accommodate my needs and pick it up sometime later. I've fixed my bike here a few times. Recently, I brought my cousin's bike out here to get the brakes and everything else checked out. They have great service (I think I'm only saying that b/c they helped me take the bike out of my car and then put it back in). Don't judge! That shit is heavy as hell. They do a good job and honestly, I don't know a lot about bikes except riding one. I always feel like the Bike Barn is trying to jip me by selling me things and telling me to fix things I really don't need fixing. I got my tires fixed there once and the next day it popped. But that's for another review. The guys here tell you straight forward, "your brakes look good so you don't need to get that done." And I like how they give you an reasonable estimate after they tell you in detail what they're going to do to your bike, what they're going to add, how much it's going to cost, etc. Instead of the, "ugggh..you know...it's going to cost this much" and be super vague about it. read more

I got into a car accident, took my road bike here for a fix up. they were able to re-use the frame. thanks! Also, about a year ago, my gf's bike was stolen, and later recovered by Davis PD. When she got it back it was a disaster. Since she bought the bike originally from the other bike store across town, we took it there for an estimate. After that, we took it to freewheeler for a second estimate. Freewheeler's estimate was hundres LESS ! So of course we went with freewheeler. after reading reviews on yelp, i was reassured that we could actually find a non-pretentious shop. and we did! Cheri (or Sherry or Shari?) at Freewheeler Bikes hooked us up! she had each of us try out a few different styles, swapped out seats for us, adjusted parts and stuff and fit me for a bike i LOVE. and i hate bikes! a week later when we came to pick up our bikes, they didn't have the bike rack we wanted in stock and offered to loan us a brand new one, which unfortunately didn't fit on our car. at that point, they recommended that we try another bike shop in the area for a rack because they wanted us to be able to take our bikes home to enjoy them right away! reluctantly we got a rack at another store, but Cheri was more than happy to show us how to put it on our car and mount our bikes. we LOVE our new bikes and won't go anywhere else for tuneups and gear! read more

I've lived in Davis for almost three years now and haven't been to Freewheeler until the third. Since then, it has been my go-to for bike needs. The staff is friendly, helpful, honest, and always exhibit excellent customer service. On two separate occasions, I've dropped in with minor QoL bike problems and was greeted by Kyle, with his warm smile and field of golden wheat that is his hair. I would describe the problem I had with my bike, and he would examine and explain how I were to fix it on my own with the purchase of a tool (which they carried) or he could perform the service for the regular price. Since the problems were very minor, he would set aside what he was doing and quickly fix the problem and say I was always welcome back if the problem were to occur again. Over the last two years I've stopped in this place between my commute from the Bay Area to UCDavis a few times for small parts/service for my bike since its on the direct path from Amtrak to the Uni. Every time I've stopped in, the mechanics have been highly impatient and act as if I'm the stupidest bike rider around (it may be true but are you really gonna treat customers like that?) and as though I'm absolutely wasting their time. Last Thursday, their rudeness was the straw that broke the camel's back. I just needed to fill up my tires with some air and asked to borrow their hand pump and they acted like I was the biggest, cheapest, a-hole that had ever walked the earth. Next time, I'll walk my bike the few extra blocks to G street and get free compressed air without the holier than thou attitude rather than set foot in this store again. read more
