With all the cool trendy places on Oakland I was surprised to see a dive bar in the area so how could I not go in. The place is a dive bar that's old with a cool glass block wall as you walk in and the era correct dark wood panel walls. It's two rooms separated by the bar with the bar area in front and the pool room area in back. We probably had the most expensive two drink order of the day at $17 for two Makers Mark drinks judging by the domestic drunk mini pitcher girl at the bar. For a valentines we were the only couple in the place and I was reminded thats why they are here and it was it a great mix of people from the drunk regular woman to the guy who left and returned to smell the place up with weed. The bartender was pretty cool because he was handing out chocolate kisses to all of us. The four stars are because it was a dive bar that totally lived up to the dive bar experience and I kind of like that from time to time.

The bar area reminds me of what I what picture an upscale French prison to look like. It wasn't dreary, but it had bars and was dimly lit. Furniture seemed to be what you might see out in a French Cafe for outdoors seating. I had Gary as my bartender during my visit (I've seen him compete in a few bartender competitions in Milwaukee) and he can make a great Absinthe based cocktail. In fact, that's what the Elixir Lounge is known for. Gary was really knowledgeable about the Absinthe drip and had all the appropriate equipment to serve Absinthe the correct and technical way. I had either the Death Star or the Bloody Death Star, my memory on the specific drink is a little hazy. So, if you are looking to experience Absinthe for your first time, this has to be a stop you make. If you like Absinthe and are looking for a place to drink more of it... say hello to your new favorite drinking spot. Oh and smokers, they have a nice outdoor courtyard area for you to smoke in, I believe you can take your drink with you too.

Every time the experience starts off pretty awkward and eventually I end up warming up to the place again. The place always seems to be dark, dingy, and gloomy. Normally, I'd complain about this but in a goth/industrial club it works perfectly. The effect is made greater by the Halloween decorations that apparently line the top of the stage area (near the ceiling, to the right if you're facing the stage). Between this and some of the music they occasionally play (seriously, I remember being rickrolled by a DJ here, I can't say I expected that) it's clear that they have a sense of humor about themselves. I can't say how much I like that--the industrial scene is full enough of people who think they're such serious business, so anything that undermines that scores points from me. They're less ironic (if that's the right word) playlist selections are always great. If it's a reasonably well-known industrial artist, chances are you'll hear them here eventually. I've never tried to make a request, so I don't know how accommodating they are (and frankly don't care). I can't speak for the typical crowd here, because I've never been in on a "normal" night, but for special events the friendliness of the patrons seems to vary dramatically. I've been to concerts where everyone was super friendly and quick to open up, and I've been to other events where people seemed pretty reserved. It probably depends on what the draw is on a given night. The bartenders, even on busy nights, always seem friendly. At a club like this, that is always a huge, unexpected bonus. Another bonus: they introduced me to hard apple cider awhile back, so that was decent. The only drawbacks relate to concerts here: (1) the dance floor is pretty small, so it can get pretty packed if there's a big-ish show; (2) I went to one show here where things were starting up considerably after the advertised time. Those are really relatively minor gripes though; I hope to eventually check this place out on a normal night.

The weekends are booming. I went there with friends celebrating the bachelorette and bachelor party with the Charli XCX, Ke$ha, Chappelle Roan theme. Cover charge is cheap and so are the drinks. They offer water at the side of the bar so you don't have to wait in line to hydrate and sober up on your drive home. Decent dance floor with cool lighting. They have a separate area near the dance floor with a pool table and a Pac Man video game with a set of couches to relax in when you need a break form dancing and wanna chat with your friends. It's a great place to come for your spirit and move your body with tunes to dance to!

The upscale drinking establishments I have frequented do not authorize purchases in this manner. Not a good business practice performed by this specific bartender. Took himself serious and stated "the drink will be $___" after placing two holds on both of my cards. I remember thinking "Absolutely Not" and I verbally stated to management, "I did not touch the 2nd drink so I will not be paying for it." I remember thinking who's drinks am I honestly paying for? As I left, there was a smirk on this specific bartender's face... a personal satisfaction on his behalf. Management observed my reaction to the bartender and I displayed the transactions from both financial accounts to management and the response to me was "that doesn't look right". I agree with management. Maybe it was my black fedora, metallic short shorts and plunging neckline that was "actually" the problem for this specific bartender. If so, sounds like a personal problem. This is another neighborhood dive bar and I will try not to do dive bars only. The place is locals and they didn't me feel out of place at all and the woman bartender was friendly and sassy with the patrons, l like when there is a cool personality behind the bar instead of grumpy. Monday is some $1 dollar can special domestic I'm sure and not that I'm snob but my tastes have grown past that to the gins, bourbons and cocktails etc. I'm still a fan of the beer and burger lunch but cocktails is where I'm gravitating to as I get older. I have yet to meet a bartender who knows what a gin Rickey is, it started in the 1890s and it was very popular but no one drinks them today, it's a 0 sugar cocktail and if you're trying to keep your A1C level in check it's perfect. Overall it's a friendly neighborhood dive bar with a great sassy short hair woman bartender who gives it back to you which makes for good bar banter.

It looks like something from like south Milwaukee on the inside with out the exterior character. It looks like a nice old Woden bar on the inside and not like the west allis dive bar style but not tosa modern/fancy. They have plenty of taps on hand and the woman bartender said coconut porter something so I said yes please, I don't think that I have ever heard porter beer and coconut in the same sentence so I'm trying it. Oddly I actually liked it because it did have a sweet coconut finish. It's definitely a regulars bar because I got the eye and only the bartender talked to me which is ok because I was just checking the place out before more shopping.

The bartender was very friendly but once again didn't know what a gin Rickey was but that's ok because no one has so far. The place is your typical Wisconsin dive bar with the bar and tables around it. Tons of TVs and a pool table with chance machines. One very cool thing which is smart is that they give you a small basket of salty chips that looked like sour cream and chive, salt doesn't really make you drink more but some people might. The windows let in lots of natural light so it's not a dungeon feel. I think the table in back was enjoying playing gin because they kept shuffling a deck of cards. It's clearly a neighborhood hang out where everyone knows each other like most all bars and I'm the outsider because I'm always stopping at new places because it's who I am. I completely enjoyed my visit and I'm probably coming back since it's close to work.
