Such a great find for lunch! First off, there's plenty of parking, which is always a plus, and I loved the mural outside it really adds to the charm of the place. All of the baked goods looked amazing, but I came in for lunch and got their lunch special, which includes a sandwich, salad, dessert, and a drink such a great deal! I had my sandwich on a fresh baguette and it was so good. The salad was also really tasty, but the standout for me was the carrot cake it was absolutely incredible. Everything came out to under $20, which is honestly hard to beat for the quality. I also grabbed some cookies for my coworkers and everyone loved them. Pick up service was quick and reliable. Price was reasonable for an 8" cake (about $42). The cake had 2 layers with chocolate fudge icing on the outside. I am a huge fan of chocolate cakes, and this cake had the right amount of sweetness. My only feedback on the cake itself was it being a tad bit dry. Stopped by this place on a Saturday morning with the intention of purchasing a dozen of various pastries. There were only 2 customers in the bakery ( should have been my first clue). The staff was not very welcoming and they acted as if they didn't want to serve me. I got several strange looks. I only purchased one item. But what didn't set well with me, when I left the building, an employee (maybe the manager) was watching me from a side door as I walked back to my car. Will not return. And the pastry tasted stale. I ordered and paid for 2 dozen dinner rolls several days in advance of Christmas Eve and was given an estimated pickup time of 9:40-9:50 am on Christmas Eve. The French Gourmet Bakery right around the corner from me closed many years ago. This nearby location used to be good, but as the years wore on, it was absolutely filthy with extremely surly staff and a plethora of tip jars, so it needed to go. We do not live close to the River Oaks area location, but the rolls I had at a recent luncheon prompted me to order from them. What a monumental mistake! Although Christmas Eve is such a busy day for most people (family visiting, food prepping, tons of traffic), I sent my husband all the way across town to pick them up. As he arrived at 9:48 am , I received a text that my order was CANCELLED and my money refunded. Are you kidding me? Money wasted on toll roads, money wasted on gas, not to mention all the time WASTED just for French Gourmet Bakery to simply cancel AT PICKUP TIME! Why did they even take the order in the first place if they could not fulfill it? Isn't this what you do- bake?? Nothing says good business practices like cancelling an order on Christmas Eve with no warning whatsoever. I am pretty sure they knew before 9:48am that they had not baked them, how about give me some kind of heads up!? I tried calling over and over but no one even bothers to answer the phone. French Gourmet Bakery always comes through for me in a pinch. If I ever need a chocolate cake for my daughter on short notice, this place serves up an exceptional chocolate cake. Moist, velvety, and delicious to the last slice. Most recently I was after a birthday cake the day of, and their staff did a great job writing happy birthday on the cake for her. My history with FGB goes back to before I was born (seriously). Circa 1989, my dad carried a FGB chocolate raspberry cake on his lap for the entirety of a four and a half hour flight to California to give to my mom, who he was dating at the time. I should have known this was not going to be a good experience when they asked if I wanted my baquettes in PLASTIC or paper. So disappointing to not be able to find real French baguettes in a shop named the "French Gourmet Bakery". Their baguettes have the consistency of a hamburger bun! Soft on the inside, not chewy, and soft on the outside, not hard, crunchy and crackly as it should be. I once read that if you didn't have your lap full of little hard crunchy flakes after consuming the baguette, you weren't eating a real French Baguette. So true. Someone told me that there was a French bakery or coffeehouse "close to downtown" Houston. And they added that the area wasn't the greatest. (Take note that this person is also very highbrow.) I looked up "French" and "bakery" and "coffeehouse" and got several results. I got tired of trying to decipher from the map which one this bakery might have been and went with the one where the name spelled it out for me - French Gourmet Bakery. As for the area not being the greatest, that is not the case here. French Gourmet Bakery is probably in River Oaks, or where River Oaks and Upper Kirby come together. It's a nice area. It's on Westheimer, inside the Inner Loop, so not quite as far out as the Galleria. It's funny that, in Texan terms, Westheimer can be relatively "narrow" as it moves from downtown to the Inner Loop. That said, French Gourmet Bakery has parking on site. I went in and did not know what I was going to get. This was for a late breakfast. Thankfully, I arrived late enough to partake in a sensible special they were offering toward the lunch hour: quiche, salad, a slice of cake, and a hot drink the likes of coffee or tea. I felt that the price was fair, so I went for it. Everything in this "kit of parts" was very good. The quiche was flavorful, warm, and appropriately sized. H-town seems to love its Caesar salads and, even though I don't know when and where they originated, I'll take one, even if it's not the most Gallic of dishes. As for the pie or cake, you can only choose from a few. I chose a slice of Italian cream frosted cake and the tanginess of the frosting was spot on. I was pleasantly surprised. And, lastly, the hot drink was fine. Others were coming in for hot drinks, desserts to be boxed up, or (their daily) bread - aka "leur pain quotidien" (hahaha and ooh la la to that). In all seriousness, it looked and smelled great. There were regulars and, given that French Gourmet Bakery has been in business for decades, that's a good sign. Finally, the personnel I interacted with during my short visit to this locale, from the people taking my order to management, were very pleasant. As such, what's not to like? I'm going to go with five stars. Or, as they would say in my high school French classes, across the pond, and north of the border: "cinq etoiles." read more

Purchased a chocolate butter cream raspberry liquor cake for my son's birthday. Extremely underwhelming. Cake was dry and filling was overly sweet. I bought a carrot cake at French Gourmet yesterday for a birthday dinner. I was very surprised at how very straight out of a Pillsbury cake mix box it tasted and its complete lack if texture other than that of a sort of dry cake made from a mix. There were no discernable carrots, no pecans no pineapple, nothing but blandness. The icing was perhaps cream cheese based but hard to say because it was so overly sweet from sugar that sugar was the only taste I could discern. The icing did not have any of the standard addition in a traditional carrot cake icing that naturally sweeten the icing rather than relying solely on sugar to do so. There were again no pecans or pineapple, both ingredients besides the shredded carrot that is what makes a carrot cake a carrot cake. This was a $52, 6 inch diameter cake. At that price, about two and a half the cost of a real carrot cake, full of nuts carrots and pineapple, a terrific cake can be purchased at House of Pies, around the corner from French Gourmet. Had I known what the French Gourmet cake was going to be like I would have bought a cake mix and already prepped icing, a can of crushed pineapple, a few carrots, and lots of pecans, and a stick of butter. I would have followed instructions on the box subbing the oil with melted butter, added half the pineapple, nuts and shredded carrot to batter snd other half to the already made icing base and had a much better cake. Or I would have just gone to House of Pies. read more

Came here this morning for a chocolate croissant, and really happy I did! The croissant was really large, and had plenty of chocolate distributed throughout the pastry. I tore it into several pieces, so that's what's pictured. And omg - those thumbprints!!! Super delicious!!! Bought them for dessert with a friend in the afternoon, and they were amazing! Great size, and the chocolate was awesome. The one thing that would have made this place really great would be an espresso machine so people can order fine coffee to enjoy with the treats here. I was hoping to go back and grab a slice of their hazelnut French cake, but I had plans and then had to fly out to VA. Their gingerbread cookie was good, their colored sugar cookies, not so much. Price: pricey, but worth it. I was debating on a $60 cake, but my friend surprised me and got me a buche de Noel. We ate them for Christmas and it was soo good. The cake was moist with some cake wine, the buttercream was smooth and light. We ate them at room temp, but I honestly like them cold, where the cream is harder.
