What a little gem! We went on Saturday evening - reservations recommend and needed if planning on enjoying their prime rib - and found ourselves in a cozy old hotel (dated from 1850s) chock full of history. We had a small prime rib (huge!), new york strip w prawns and garlic mushroom chicken amongst four people. All were great meals served with a small salad and mashed/baked potato. We ended the meal with a caramel sundae - yum. Everyone was very friendly and attentive - checking on us fairly regularly. If I could give this place more than 5 stars I would, it's fantastic! We were greeted like family and after taking our table, they brought us out garlic fries and deep fried mushrooms! The owners are so accommodating and welcoming! Their prime rib is to die for and all of our food came out hot and quick! They checked on us several times and had great table side manner! I complimented how wonderful their homemade ranch was, and they sent me home with some, which was so kind of them. Great place, great people! Exploring Whiskeytown Lake area, ventured off the road to find French Gulch after seeing a bar on yelp that was filled with rifles and vintage items, and a restaurant that served prime rib. After driving through the small town of homes and old buildings, we parked and walked into the building marked Saloon to found out that the bar (with the rifles) across the road closed several years ago, but that this was indeed the restaurant that we had planned on checking out. So glad we did. Unassumingly delicious and nice staff. We ordered chicken wings, fish n chips, NY state with shrimp and their special lobster, and a salad with grilled chicken. Everything was cooked well, wings were a special homemade sauce that was spicy and sweet. Blue cheese dressing is a must. Can't forget to mention the root beer and orange crush floats! While I didn't have a float, my wife and father n law were very happy!! The orange crush was just like a 50/50 bar. Nothing disappointed us. Yes, a little pricey for the area but for Father's Day, no price is too pricey, and really for as delicious as everything was, we'd definitely come back! Business is tough in this little town, don't miss the opportunity to support a small local business with delicious food and interesting old wall decor. Booked reservations to eat here last month for our large party to celebrate birthdays. We made the reservation a few weeks in advance. The inside is very small with half the restaurant being the bar and pool table. All beverages for water and soda are served bottled and canned. No cocktails, only beer and wine. $4 for a soda can. We all had ordered steaks and the prime rib (which we called ahead for during our reservation call). Each one of us that came felt extremely disappointed with the dinner. The wait staff just seemed to rush us but, we're extremely slow to attend to us when needed something. Once our meals arrived, the meat was cooked to our liking, but the meat had absolutely no flavor, not even a dash of salt and pepper. All of our party (party of 10), felt the same as if the meat was really bland and just not seasoned with any thing. The fries were also not the best, were lacking flavor too. The party members that ordered the prime rib, said it was a 1/10, with no flavor. The meat portions were huge but just not worth it. We brought our own cake, paper plates, and utensils for the birthday celebration. The waitress even said it looked good, so we offered her a piece, which she had. We were charged for bringing in a cake. We asked for ice cream to go with the cake. The waitress didn't remember until we had finished the cake. Overall, it was an extremely underwhelming experience. We were all excited seeing the reviews on the Facebook Page, but I would not recommend. The price is high for the quality they deliver and service they have. read more

This is an experience you'll remember forever. We came as a romantic treat on a 12 day camping road trip while in Whiskeytown those few days. Everything about this spot from the food, to the service to the people enjoying it all was enchanting and endearing. It's been nearly 30 years since we've been here and it's only improved with time! Took my husband there this evening to celebrate his birthday and it was a delightful experience! Tried to go on prime rib night (Saturday) but couldn't get a reservation. Tonight we both had the ribeye steak and they were cooked to perfection! So big we could have split one! Everything from the homemade blue cheese dressing to the veggies and baked potatoes were delicious Is it a fancy place? No but it's charming, rustic and full of history! Um service was good and food was okay. Generous portion on the small cut of prime rib but it was definitely medium and not medium rare. There is no bread served either which I thought was weird. Alcohol is beer, wine and low alcohol % for hard liquor. Overall it was a nice drive, friendly service and okay food. Band was supposed to start playing at 7:30pm but by 8:20pm they hadn't begun. World class ribeye steak. Cooked to perfection, exactly as I asked, "medium rare, a little closer to rare than medium". As good as any steak offered in the Redding area, and I have tried all the well known steakhouses in Redding. That is not meant to knock other Redding steakhouses, because Redding has some steakhouses that server up a great steak. It is meant to emphasis how good the ribeye steak I had at the French Gulch hotel. Well worth the drive out to French Gulch, even with today's gas prices. And the prices are unbelievably low for such high quality steak. Plus the friendly atmosphere makes dinner here all the more enjoyable. read more

Strangest thing.... middle of nowhere. best food in 50 miles we've found while living in Redding (1 1/2yrs). Pros: food was great, prawns, potato, salad, and burger for 2. Cons; 1/2 hr from town.
