One of my absolute favorite places to go. You can only blame yourself if you cook your steak wrong.

Not a welcoming environment, if you dont fit "the crowd" I was openly called homophobic slurs. Food is good though.

This place is such a fun and unique experience! We were visiting a family friend that lives in Oakrun and we heard this restaurant has one of the best steaks. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. We mentioned we've never been here before and she explained the process. We had our salads first. Very fresh and loved the ranch dressing. As people mentioned in the reviews, do not come here if you are already starving. It's a small grill, where only two tables at a time can cook their meal. Unfortunately, we happened to have a huge family party that was holding up the grill but what can you do about it. The waitress came and got our table when it was our turn to grill. They provided the steaks, baked potatoes and bread. Next to the grill was a tub of butter that you could slather onto your food items and all the seasonings needed for meat. I have never grilled and was worried about destroying/over cooking my steak. The waitress said it's a magic grill they have and you can't mess it up. Well, she was certainly right! Everything turned out phenomenal and our table of three had so much fun cooking our meal. You also cannot beat the prices for a huge meal! We took tons of leftovers home. The steak was good because I had an expert cook. Very average food, baked potato, salad and bread. The server was very nice. But what was concerning was the bartender tended to argue with me about what I felt that the drink was not what I ordered. Instead of trying to please me ( you never argue with a customer) I spoke with the owner who did make things right. And for that I was satisfied. But I probably will not go back again. read more

Love this place, we visit every time we visit Redding. The atmosphere is very friendly and the food is delicious. The setup is very unique where you cook your own steak and potato, the waitress brings the rest, including the best fries and salad around. Growing up in Palo Cedro inn the '70s-'80s, the PCI was this forbidden place...My parents occasionally went, but I mainly knew the area for The Sandwich Board, Fritz's and the liquor store that sold beer nuts and Garbage Pail Cards. I moved from the area in the early '90s, and didn't get to visit the PCI until my 30s and the first time was only for drinks. This was the first year I ever went for the cook your own steak, and my New York didn't disappoint. Living in the Bay Area you pay for every side separately, and about 3x the price for the meat, plus none of the fun of cooking it. When/if I'm in the area again, I'll be back . read more

Alright people, if you walk in and notice there's a grill in the dining room with patrons cooking, you've been warned. I've been once, after hearing about PCI for years. I was with a group of 8, and we enjoyed good service, cold beers and we fought over who got to cook our steaks. I don't go out often because I arrogantly think I can cook better food than most restaurants do, and I get bored sitting and waiting for food. Good service, cold beer, cocktails if you want them, and I get to do what I love... cook. Love it! PCI is one of our favorite spots, the gals are all amazing and the owner Trish is the most amazingly humble, hard working gals I have ever met. We bring family and friends all the time, to enjoy the ambiance inside and outside on the patio. Their cuts of meat are perfect but my favorite would have to be their bourbon glaze salmon. We had a group of four of us. We didn't get greeted at the door. We had to ask at the bar about where we could sit. We got a table outside and nobody came by to get an order from us. We checked back in at the bar and ended up changing to sit indoors as the patio heaters ran out of gas. We got drinks from walking inside and to the bar on our own prior to moving inside. Finally after 45 minutes to an hour we got a waitress and ordered our food. Not sure what happened that day but by the time we had finished eating the place was half empty. read more

Walked in and sat down. I asked what they had to drink and the surly waitress said, "Just tell me what you want to drink." I wanted to know what they had, but just got a Dr. Pepper instead. I looked at the menu while I waited for my buddy and while looking she slammed the drink on the table and walked off. She came back soon after sat down and asked if I had been there before; I hadn't. She said well you have to cook your own food which for me defeats the purpose of eating out. She then said the only things you can order that you don't have to cook are chicken tenders or fries. I went ahead and got those but before I could order some for my buddy too she just said great and stormed off. After a while I flagged her down and put in a second order. She then questioned me by saying "Why?! Are you extra hungry? Are you taking it to go?" Who the fuck asked you lady just put in another order like I asked, What difference does it make?! Anyway the only reason we came here was because Ortega's was closed. That place is awesome, delicious food, friendly staff, and you get good portions for what you pay. Waited an hour plus they were busy, so I will give them grace on that. I had to walk up to the bar to get drinks because the waitress had not checked on us once an hour and five minutes. Ordered a drink from the bar, took it back to our table. The rude bartender came over and said are you serious? You guys just did that give me your IDs. I told her my son and my daughter-in-law are both over 21. They gave the IDs and she stormed off with an attitude when she realized they were over 21 and then blamed it on the server when our food finally came out and 13 minutes later, not our food let me correct that it was our salad. I told him we didn't want it we were leaving And she said we needed to pay our tab. I told her we had no tab, but I forgot that I had one corona before that that I ordered so I walked up to the bar to pay for my corona, the rude bartender once again barked out that I was intimidating her by telling her I would never eat there again and she probably should know who she's being rude to. Owner came out. The owner was a sweetheart, and wanted to fix it and the bartender and waitress kept making their snide remarks the entire time when I was talking to the owner the owner finally had to tell her to stop. This was an unusual experience, but in a good way. We were passing through the area on a Saturday, and as we usually do in these situations, we checked Yelp for what looked interesting and close by. I was intrigued by some of the reviews I read... A place where you grill your own steaks? Never experienced that before, at least in a steakhouse type setting. So what the heck we thought... Let's give it a try. The inside was cool and funky. Looked like a lot of locals. Our server was very young, but super enthusiastic. She explained how things work... You order drinks, you decide on what type of steak, chicken, or fish you want... They bring you your salad, and after a short time they come and tell you that your protein is ready to be grilled. So I headed over to the little grilling station, which has various seasonings and the tools needed for the grilling. So away I went. The steaks, from a local supplier, were really good. And, gotta say, I did a nice job grilling them. :-) One of the things that blew me away was the price. There were two of us. We each had a steak dinner, which included a really nice salad with homemade blue cheese dressing. And sourdough bread. We also got the side order of mushrooms, the side of shrimp, and a couple of beers. The bill came to... Are you ready for this... $54! It was really good, we had a good time. We couldn't even finish all of the food they brought us. And it was $54! So, if you're in the area, give this place a try. The only downside I can think of is that if you're with a large group of people, it might get kind of complicated with all the grilling you would have to do. But for a party of two or four, go for it! read more

Been on the to-do list for 5 years. Finally made it there with my buddy Keith who grew up next door to the restaurant. Locals call it "the PCI". Comfortable atmosphere when we arrived around 5pm. You need to go early. The grill is rather small and you can only cook from one side. If you have more than a couple people cooking its gonna be crowded. Did i mention you cook your own protein? The menu is simple, 4 steaks, chicken breast, salmon, burger, and I think a salad and a sandwich. And its cheap. The filet mignon is $17.95. The meal came with a salad and the server puts your protein, baked potato and bread next to the grill. Theres a nice selection of seasonings and butter. You do the rest. The salad was nice, iceberg, cucumber, croutons and dressing on the side. I had the 12oz ribeye and it was excellent. I hear they get the meat from R&R meats, a popular meat market in Redding. They have a full service bar for your pleasure. All in all I loved it. Good food, excellent service and reasonable pricing. What more can you ask for. If they had full service I would rate 5 stars but part of the charm is the do it yourself approach. read more

I love this place! The bar has a lot of locals like ranchers, contractors and Palo cedro folks. It has a rustic feel and large patio in the back. THIS IS A COOK YOUR OWN STEAK/BURGER restaurant. (Someone gave PCI a low rating because they had to get up off their ass and stand at the grill for a few minutes while they sip their drink and flip their steak). The gals are all friendly and if your not sure how to get your steak right they will help you out. Do you guys know how Game 5 of the NBA Finals turned out? I'm asking because I went to PCI last night to watch the game -- our satellite dish was on the blink. I watched the second quarter in relative peace -- the only distraction was listening to the guy sitting a few stools to my left go on and on about how the world's supply of crude oil is actually infinite, and conservation is bullshit, because God replenishes it as we use it up. See, that's why the center of the earth is hot. It's God's way of cooking up more crude oil. There's actually so much oil that it's bubbling to the surface in Canada and the Dakotas, and the only reason there are shortages is because Democrats and environmentalists blah blah blah blah blah.... At halftime I'm eating my soup-and-salad dinner when a guy sits down next to me and proceeds to tell my all about his last five years in one long stream-of-consciousness epic saga. Included were details about a nasty divorce from a member of a prominent local hill clan that involved a prenuptial agreement regarding an $8 million estate, a back-stabbbing housemaid who committed perjury, a bitter custody fight, multiple car wrecks and DUIs, bulging discs, disability, Medicare, sexual molestation charges involving a minor..... About every two minutes he says something like, "And that's all I got to say about that. I said enough already. You're trying to watch the basketball game. (He looks at the screen.) Hey, nobody touch the nigger! It's a foul if you touch that nigger. Ha ha ha." Then back to his life's story. I'm staring a hole in the TV screen in the 3rd quarter, hoping the guy next to me is going to follow through on his promise to go talk to the owner, which is why he says he's there. A woman walks up and ask the bartender to change the channel. This is the same bartender who knows I'm there to watch the basketball game, which I've been doing since I arrived, and I'm watching now with as much focused intensity as I can muster given that the guy next to me is still talking about how the girl involved in the molestation charge is a big fat liar, and he heard Glenn Beck say on the radio today that it's going to be a law that we all have to learn how to speak Spanish, and his only hope at getting the truth out about the molestation is the anchorman at Chanel 24 News in Chico, and if you ever need a lawyer get one from Alturas 'cause they still make their living off the land over there, and the Grand Jury won't do shit about his ex-wife even though his lawyer told him they would..... My food is never cooked incorrectly when I go so that's cool. However, the last two times I've been there I have ordered a glass of Pendleton whiskey like I always have with my steak. Lately it tastes like somebody had been watering it down. One time it even taste like sugar was added. When I asked my waitress what kind of whiskey she had poured she said it was what I ordered. I came there with a reservation of 10 people. It took THREE hours before we were told the grill was ready for us to even start cooking our food. We had to keep buying appetizers because we were so hungry. After all that, not only was I charged for drinks I didn't order, they charged my card twice. After calling several times to try to get the charges reversed and going back in, and always being told the owner wasn't in and she was the only one that could reverse the charge, I gave up. I've been to a few cook your own steak restaurants. Saw this place and it's ranking and we gave it a try. Great atmosphere and staff. They have good quality ribeye cuts and burgers. I can't say on the other cuts. Great salad and tasty bread you can grill. Why 3 stars???Well, they have only one 4 foot x 3 foot grill.....I have a grill bigger at my home. It was medium busy and we waited an hour for the grill...the grill size causes light hearted grill space competition and if it were busy the wait is definitely an issue. As locals, we've been going to the PCI for over 40 years. The food has almost always been good, but management/ownership has been off and on. We went the other night for the first time in a while. Service was good. Dinner was ok. Salmon was good, but my husband said his rib eye steak wasn't up to par for R&R Meats. As far as drinks go, they totally sucked. They were weak, and watered down. I will never understand why people in the F&B business (that's Food AND Beverage) do not want to serve a good drink. Both equally important. When we go to dinner, we want good drinks to go along with it. The food might be great, but if they don't pour a decent drink, it puts a definite downer on the dinner. Sadly, there are very few places in town that do serve a good drink, but the PCI could stand to take a lesson from Jack's, C.R. Gibbs, Peter Chu's, and the Elks Lodge. Very disappointing, so four of us went home after dinner and had a real drink. Won't be going back for a while. read more
