It is not often I get treated to a meal and when I do, it is nothing of this quality. First for me it's unassuming exterior relaxes you prior to the upcoming culinary extravaganza. It is warm and cozy inside, more like your grandmothers house prior to a celebration. The staff is kind considerate and professional always close by but never overbearing. The meals are served family style and in courses who lends itself to creating amazing memories. My kids, never fans of tomato soup, loved this garlic infused offering. Next came beans, a spaghetti appetizer and a fabulously tossed salad. There was none left by the time the main course reached us leaving us ready for the Piece De Resistance. The green beans were tasty and the potatoes a definite hit however the steaks were out of this world. My son got lamb with was flavorful, tender and a large portion. My daughter the filet which was rich, perfectly cooked and a meal unto itself. Her boyfriend, the pre birthday boy had the ribeye that transported him to another plane of epicurean joy. I had the big daddy porterhouse so I could get the best of both worlds of New York and Ribeye. I still can't decide which was better so WHEN not if I come back I will get it again. Don't leave before the ice cream which was greedily devoured by all of us. I highly recommend this gastric gem to all whether it's a romantic dinner or family celebration.

Came here for their tapas menu with friends and had a great time. We got the olives, stuffed mushrooms, chicken strips, fried ravioli, bread and sampler plate with shrimp, beef, & pork. Everything was amazing! I would get everything again. My favorite was the shrimp! I want to get a full plate of shrimp next time. We also split a pitcher of the sangria and enjoyed it. Service was great! Our waitress and bartender were nice and answered all our questions. Highly recommend for a girls night out!

    Potatoes, noodles were tasty, beans

We called for a reservation and got one within 30 min for a party of 4 on a Saturday night. This place was PACKED and super busy but we only had to wait a few min before our table was ready. This is a family style restaurant where you order and wntree and then they bring out soup, salad, bread, beans, potatoes and pasta for everyone to share. The noodles were probably the fav. We had chicken which was a little dry but it came with rice which was good. The ribeye was delish. It also comes with ice cream which was just perfect. The service was good except for a minor mixup when they didn't charge us correctly (they took the cash but also charged the card in full but we were a party of 4 spitting the check). That was cleared up pretty quickly tho. Drinks were good but I wish they had more variety. We will def be back at some point when we visit friends again in that area!

Tomato Soup. What they start you with.

Complimentary Chilean bread rolls brought to the table right away with garlic herb butter, salsa verde sauce (chimicuri like) so good, made the old fashioned way with pork fat. Calamari Frito, Cajun seasoning, light and crunchy with a house made tarter sauce (excellent server brought us an additional tarter) Crab stuffed chili Relleno was a creative version of this meal I've eaten dozens of times, feta and a sweet sauce with the rock crab was delicious. Panqueque especial ,chorizo had a little kick but was cooled off by the pineapple and sweetness of the crepe. All baked together with rice, cheese, guac, veggie's on the side, this was a big meal that was packed with a savory mix of flavors,my favorite thing I sampled. Honey shirachi shrimp, jalapeno, bacon, pineapple,on slaw. Big shrimp, big taste in the sauce, excellent appetizer or can be ordered as a full meal. The entrance was a bit tough to recognize. In addition, the sign requesting patrons to wait to be seated was absent personnel. The youngster arrived while on the phone taking a reservation. Further delay as she coordinated seating for the large group (showing up on Wednesday, she shared). She mentioned they were slow and said I could select whatever table I liked. I ordered a savory martini and filet mignon, mashed potatoes and French onion soup. Soup arrived with the martini and the two could not have been more oppositely received. The soup exquisite, the martini...nearly undrinkable. But to be fair, I wasn't expecting an overwhelming bell pepper flavor. Black pepper Absolute Vodka was the description. I detest bell peppers. I tried to choke down as much as I could, then decided to give up halfway through. The soup was sublime. A 1/4 inch slice of brown toast under the melted Swiss cheese, the broth and onions delicious. I requested a 6 ounce pour of the Caymus California Cabernet Sauvignon with the steak. It arrived with my meat and potatoes beautifully plated. I'm not sure I wasn't served a sirloin. That filet was the shape of no filet I've ever bought or been served. But it was perfectly cooked and the mashed potatoes were sublime - buttery and flavorful. The wine with less tannins than I anticipated- I really enjoyed that. Service was attentive and both the hostess and my server checked on me. My drive back to Sacramento will be pleasant.

Mac and cheese with bacon, French onion soup and the surf & turf skewers. French onion Soup was DELICIOUS, we added a little salt to the other two dishes and they were really good too. For dinner I ordered the $24 Caesar - it was good and it was big but it was a lot for a basic good tasting Caesar. Husband ordered the Chicken Parm over pasta with a red sauce and he loved it. Portion was huge and he brought half home. For dessert we had the cheesecake and the cream brûlée, both really good. Only downside, if you are dropping almost $200 for dinner, the bathrooms need to be clean and upscale. Mold in the ladies room toilet at the waterline - yuck - and Toilet paper dispenser broken and laying on the floor in the stall. This needs improvement. Overall we were happy with our meal and we will be back.

I read the reviews for El Portal and they were not stellar, it seems mainly because people felt the staff were not friendly. As we walked in the restaurant, there was a sign apologizing because they were short staffed and doing everything they could to provide great service. We sat down and were properly provided with a basket of chips and a bowl of salsa. We immediately noticed that the salsa and chips were pretty exceptional. My husband observed someone in the kitchen using a commercial immersion blender to make a batch of fresh salsa. After talking to our waitperson we learned the chips are made fresh each morning. She also said there are new owners as if last January. Both my husband and I ordered a Quesadilla. His was Al Pastor and mine was Carnitas. Not only were both very delicious, they had the most elaborate presentation of a quesadilla we have seen. Additionally the quesadillas are huge - we both took half of it home. That is an extra bonus because neither of us feels like cooking, or going out, after traveling all day. My husband said the Al Pastor was the best he has ever had, and I concur. As travelers we were happy to see that the restrooms were clean and well stocked. We highly recommend El Portal and look forward to returning. ¡Buen provecho!

It's an elegant decor inside, much fancier than my rockshirt and jean shorts should have been allowed. We had a reservation but they were able to seat us earlier which was wonderful. 1st, Our server Jaquie was beyond fantastic in all areas. She stayed on top of refilling drinks, bringing any condiments or utensils, and was overall superb. The food, was fantastic. We got the bread basket, which came with bone marrow butter and an assortment of different breads. While the bone marrow butter was rich and tasty, the breads, while good, in my humble opinion, the best bread was the rolls you get complimentary, so you can save a few $$ that way. Ordered the Pork Belly Appetizer which was a little crispier than I expected, but rich in flavor. Everything is a-la-carte, and knowing the steaks were going to be large, wife and I split an order of Brussell Sprouts, and Cheesy AuGrautin Potatoes. Sprouts were crispy, and in a vinaigrette, absolutely great. The Potatoes were cheesy, and packed with flavor. As for the steaks, my 24 oz Bone in Ribeye ordered medium Rare was such a work of art, I barely wanted to cut in to it. I got over that feeling real quick, steak was tender, juicy and so flavorful. I ended up bringing enough home that I was able to squeeze 3 more meals out of it. My wifes Porterhouse, was just as beautiful, just as tender and flavorful. To Cap off the evening, Jaquie brought me a complimentary slice of Carrot Cake for my service anniversary and it was maybe the best Carrot Cake I can recall having (my wife agreed as she pretty much commandeered the whole slice after I had a few bites. My wife was able to squeeze a few more evenings of dessert from the remains of the sizeable slice. When it came time to settle the check , process was easy, and Our server boxed all are numerous leftovers for us. All in all, and absolute fantastic evening of dining ! The presentation and service is also high end, you are never rushed through your meal, and the servers are great. Today we chose the Sunday Special Prime Rib dinner for $39.99, accompanied with a salad, a dollop of mashed potatoes, two spears of asparagus, and a berry pie dessert. Any substitutions are an additional fee. We substituted a salad for soup at an additional $12.00 cost. The rolls are very good as well. Today, the prime rib was tough to cut and chew, even though there were a couple of big chunks of fat. It's usually pretty tender, and very good with the au jus and horseradish sauce. The asparagus was very fresh and was perfect. There were no substitutions for the dessert, and we didn't care too much for the baked berry dessert. The crust was hard, and not flaky, and not much berry filling on the inside, but the ice cream on top was very good. It's ice cream!
