A friend and I ended up French Quarter and it was a mixed review. Starting with the drinks, we both love a craft cocktail and they did not disappoint. Pictured and consumed is the Tajin Tango - El Jimador Tequilla, guave, lime and orange - highly recommend I wish I could say the same about the meal. First, the good... my dinner partner had the shrimp and grits and enjoyed the meal. Okay, that was the good! For me, I ordered the French Quarter burger with onion rings. The burger was lacking flavor. It was supposed to be dusted with creole, which could not be detected. The onions on the burger were way over cooked and had zero flavor. The scallion aioli saved the burger to add some flavor. The onion rings were overly greasy and most of them were soggy. I will chalk my experience as a bad night for the French Quarter, but I weighed out my dinner mates meal, with a good drink, and a bad meal to give them three stars. read more

This is an updated review, since we used to go here once a year for special birthday occasions for a friend when we were craving some Southern New Orleans style food. I haven't gone here for the past 2 years. I used to love going here, but then again I'm not sure if my standards are also higher now that I have visited New Orleans and experienced the food scene there. The shrimp and grits here used to be my favorite, but for $30 I can't say it's worth it anymore. Over the years, through comparison of the food photos on my phone-- the portion of the grits get smaller and smaller every year. This year, the grits did not have much taste, unlike the cheese grits that we ordered as an appetizer which was my favorite part of my meal today. The roasted brussel sprouts were okay. I thought they were going to be crispy but there was a lot of sauce covering the brussel sprouts so they ended up being on the wetter side. Cornbread was also unfortunately on the harder, dryer side. I've also been missing the beignets I had back in New Orleans, and I was greatly disappointed with the ones that were served here. The batter was super thick and dry, that it felt like I was eating a very dense donut with powdered sugar. I could barely eat a few bites, and this dish was also very pricey compared to New Orleans-- like $13 which came with 3 pieces if I remember correctly. I picked this place because of the interesting fish menu items and attractive prices . Made a reservation for 5 pm , that i didn't need -- it was empty ( filled by the time we left , around 6:10) Our server was very friendly and helpful. The service was quick. Calamari appetizer was not really good . It was eatable but the calamari rings were crunchy ( not the batter , which mostly fell off) but the calamari itself . We got two dishes with catfish: fish n' chips and Crawfish Étouffée Crowned Catfish. Both dishes came out fast and were hot. French fries were " could be better. " My side dish, Brussels sprouts were a little too sour ( balsamic vinegar ? ) -- but it's totally personal judgment. Crawfish etouffee was a little overcooked . Every once in a while, you get a meal like this where the opinion is dramatically split. I came here last Friday night with my top-tier chum who literally went to the school of hospitality with the hope that we could get seated at one of our nearby faves after dinner, The Wig Shop (we couldn't - everyone had that idea; devastating). I thought this was okay, but my chum was absolutely blown away so French Quarter would really benefit from that off-the-charts positive review that will likely never be written. But this alternative review could be worse. I'm not entirely sure if this neighborhood is considered touristy or not; it's near Boston Common and within walking distance of a lot of tourist attractions, but it's sort of an amalgam of a lot of different vibes. That said, for me this place felt touristy to some extent, almost like a kitschy theme restaurant. It reminded me of an establishment you'd find within a few blocks of MSG or Times Square in NYC, a little rundown and not that comfortable (at least from my perspective). That was reemphasized as soon as we walked in and were greeted by a young hostess who looked completely disinterested in her job and maintained an expression-less face throughout our visit. She led us toward the back of the restaurant close to the end of the bar, where we had a view of most of the room. I lived for a little while in the NOLA area so crawfish and I have a delightful, storied past. If I see it on a menu, I usually go for it. On this particular adventure, I went with the Crawfish Etouffee entree. It was okay though I thought it was a little bland compared to other dishes I've had - it's supposed to be pretty spicy but my gut says they went mild for the tourist palates (assuming I'm right about this being a tourist spot). Unless you're actually in Louisiana, the crawfish are going to be pretty miniscule and that was certainly the case here. It is what it is. We also split the Fried Oysters, which I was just eh on. I give them credit for having a spicy creole sauce (I reached for my water a few times immediately after consumption), but my gold standard for these is 1803 in NYC. You don't get the chewy texture situation that you had here. They were okay for me, but nothing more. My chum of course loved them and everything she consumed here. Every bite was greeted with squeals of delight. Truly an exciting experience from the other side of the table. She ate most of the app, consumed her salmon/grits (really highlighted the grits though again, everything got an A grade from her) and then started attacking what was left of mine. Nothing was spared. Michelin-level from the school of hospitality alum. The service was very uneven. Our waiter was nice but inattentive and honestly mystifyingly so - we had a table that was abutting a main walkway for the staff so he was constantly nearby and yet every time we were looking around for him (which was fairly often) his back was completely turned to us. Additionally, French Quarter has a very awkward restroom setup; to access the facilities, you literally have to take this elevator (and not a particularly nice one) downstairs to the basement. I used it twice, and each time had to wait a minute or two for the elevator to arrive - it's slow and tedious. If you think you have to go, don't wait around because you may not have the luxury to do so later on. About as average as it gets but I'm willing to acknowledge that I grade Cajun food on a curve that others might not. No excuse for the service issues though. read more

Food: genuinely shocked at how bad the food here was. My fav cuisine is Cajun/Creole so I was excited to try French Quarter, given its uniqueness within the Boston food scene. The hush puppies were overcooked/fried and DRY. My crab cake sandwich was also overcooked/lacked moistness and oversalted. My friend had the etouffee and she loved that, and her portion was generous. Service: I personally wasn't the fondest of service here -- nothing to write home about. Ambiance: I enjoyed the Mardi Gras decor. I should preface by saying we are NOLA familiar. We spent 9 winters there after retirement and made many trips there beforehand and since. We came for brunch on a Sunday with a reservation but the place was empty. Drinks were very good - husband's Sazerac was authentic, my gin drink was very good. I had the omelet - goat cheese and spinach. The spinach leaves were not chopped - interesting. It was good but not special. Husband had 2 eggs with bacon, he liked it. The grits - hard to find in Boston and a big part of the draw here - were lumpy! NO! Disappointing! The decor is very authentic looking, especially the marble bar. They definitely need some live music to make it really like NOLA. That being said, I was impressed by the piped in music - featured real past and current NO musicians from Sweet Emma to Kermit Ruffins. Maybe we will try dinner some time. read more

Feeling for a little bit of New Orleans while you're in Boston, definitely pop into the French Quarter service. Here is excellent. The ambience is really very good and reminiscence of New Orleans. We had a great dinner after seeing Hamilton. We arrived a little early before our reservation but didn't have to wait long for our table. Highly recommend making reservations, especially on show days. We had the fried okra and brussel sprouts to start. Our meals were fresh, the fried chicken was the best breading I've had in a long time. Try the shrimp and grits! The beignets are served three to a serving, nice and big that can be shared, and are fresh with powder sugar on top. If you're looking for some different food, try eating here. We've been wanting to try to the French Quarter since it is so conveniently located to the Opera House and we often come in to Boston to see a show. However, we're usually running late and don't have time to dine! However, this past Friday night we made reservations and were able to get in 1.5 hours before the show started giving us plenty of time. We requested to sit by the window so we could people watch. The windows were open since it was a beautiful night out. I stated with the cucumber Sage Collins and my husband had the French 75. We wound up trading because I liked his slightly more. Mine was just a little too tangy and he preferred my drink so it worked out well. We started with the fried oysters at the suggestion of our server, and they were delightful! The sauce was just the right amount of tang and kick. Would be nice if it were presented in a small ramekin rather than the plastic container that you would normally get at a seaside road stand. I had the Etouffee Crowned Catfish because I wanted to try the corn maque choux and the crawfish! It was quite tasty and I loved the corn maque choux garnish underneath. My husband had the shrimp and grits and I tried his as well both were quite good! My portion was very substantial so I gave some of mine to him. We had a very enjoyable dinner and look forward to returning the next time we have show tickets! read more

Had a 6:15 reservation on a Wednesday evening and we were promptly seated. Fairly plain decor with classic movie posters. Put our drink orders in (the Hurricane was great!) and our food orders. The appetizers came out shortly thereafter, the hush puppies were ok, but the cheese grits were definitely a good choice. This was the most uneven dining experience I have ever had. We had the first reservation time for brunch on a Saturday (11:30). Our server came right over to fill water glasses while we waited for the third member of our party. She came back to take drink orders. Evidently she swapped my and my husband's drink orders which we didn't realize until later (they were very similar). We ordered the tequila wings, which were absolutely delicious. When she brought those out she took our main course order. I ordered the gumbo with oysters. My dining companions both ordered Fried Oyster Po'Boys. I had barely finished my first wing when my gumbo was brought out from the kitchen and dropped in front of me, without oysters. It was approximately 15 minutes later when their meals came out. No attention from our server during any of this until my husband flagged her down to comment on my meal coming out so early. All she could say was "Yea, I thought that was strange too." I mentioned that it was missing the oysters I had asked for. She said she never heard me ask for them and if I wanted them now she could add them. No thanks, my food is almost gone now. I will say, the gumbo was absolutely delicious and both of my companions thoroughly enjoyed their Po'Boys. The food was great, the service was chaotic at best. They all came with different dipping sauces, but the only ones worth ordering are the fritters and fried oysters. I one bited the fried oyster, boy that was a mistake. It was so hot, I almost ruined the rest of my meal. But it was very good. I got the crawfish etouffe and it was great. Packed with crawfish, it tasted like a gumbo without the okra. The catfish looked really good, I will check that out next time. To finish the meal we got the beignets and they were gigantic. I prefer my beignets to be light and fluffy and these were dense. I wouldn't reorder it. Overall I would give this spot a 3.5 stars since there were some hits and misses. Was intrigued by this place that serves Cajun and Louisiana food. I had wished that the dishes were done more faithfully to the originals that I'm accustomed to based on my experiences eating and making this cuisine. The popcorn shrimp appetizer was fine and might actually be the best item I had. The shrimp batter was flavorful and the inside shrimp were moist and spongy. The gumbo seemed quite watery, confirming others' critiques on the textures of the stew. The roux didn't seem to be done properly to make the base thicker. [Admittedly there are various ways to do a roux but this seemed quite watery.] The crawfish etoufee had an ok flavor though definitely could have been spicier and could have added more complexity. Crucially the sauce was also much more watery than I'm used to. And the crawfish bites themselves were really small and tough. This seems to be a sourcing problem, though the crawfish could have been cooked for a shorter amount of time. The addition of corn was a bit odd ... not entirely unlikeable but a bit of a surprise. The rice could be a bit stickier, and the allium base needed more punch. The beignets came out oddly stiff, without much air inside as they should. They almost resembled something like cakes rather than actual beignets. It's good that this restaurant is here. It's a nice place to bring a small group of people and share a meal prior to a performance downtown. The environs include some neat posters of older films set in New Orleans. The service was amazing, attentive, and warmly welcoming. The vibe was upbeat without being boisterous, class without pretention. The price points were high, but so is everything these days. Rent must be high... if those fixed costs could be lowered then perhaps more attention could be devoted to refining the recipes. read more
