Super cool little store in downtown SLO. And it was jam packed full with stuff to peruse the though from one corner to the other. Cute clothes. Jewelry and accessories. Stuff for the house. All kinds of things. A sign in the window display caught my eye as we were walking by, so in I went. Let me preface by sharing that I am not a regular shopper at the store. I occasionally stroll downtown AG and downtown SLO to browse local boutique stores, which means I buy from each of them 1-4 times a year. I look forward to the quality of clothing, customer service, unique finds, and ofcourse supporting local small businesses. Overall, I consider myself to be a "thrifty" shopper, but occasionally splurge for the reasons mentioned above. About 2 to 3 months ago I purchased three pairs of pants from the San Luis Obispo Apropos location. I purchased them full price at $70 apiece. They are cozy cotton pants with a stretchy waste. They are alittle too big for me, but in a comfy way. I share the fit, to make it clear that they were not too tight causing seams to burst. Within about 1.5 months of occasional leisure activities, a seam opened about 1 inch in the bum area. Fast forward to today, I finally made it into the store to see if I could exchange them. Had I paid $15 from a discount or warehouse store I would Consider it a lost cause and shame on me for buying cheap. I did not have a receipt for my purchase, although my credit card could have been used to validate (not offered). It was clear, the lack of receipt was not the issue. The (2)employees claimed this was NORMAL Wear and to bring it to a seamstress to repair. They indicated had the tear happened in the first 2-3 weeks, then they could have helped. However, not after 2-3 months. No effort was made to repair, replace, or offer store credit. No offer to contact the wholesaler. I did not feel any empathy. Personally, I feel $70 is a decent price to pay for a pair of casual pants and would expect a pant that would last several years. Otherwise, why pay that price other then for quality? I walked away with my head down disappointed, because you know what? I like their selection. Unfortunately, this experience leaves me sour and I will spend my money at other local Stores that stand behind their products and go above and beyond to help their clients. The owners of this store used to have a boutique called "Up Your Alley," which was one of the most imaginative stores in town. Apropos follows that trend by featuring lavishly embroidered clothes with a romantic and retro vibe. The mother-daughter team who are often present, are fun and full of information on the clothing lines, which no other store in town carry. There is a full range of sizes here. I often buy what become my most basic staples for my wardrobe here, and thanks to the little pink sales notices that appear in my mail box, I often score a sale. I am currently sporting a pair of perfectly fitting jeans with black embroidery and "jewels" up the side that mimic a pair of Versace jeans I flirted with in Las Vegas. These are much more practical and will survive many seasons. I have also gotten black stretch jeans that fit like a glove and lasted forever, or at least more than one year. One of my pals got what became her "go-to" shirt, a navy blue silk smock with a deep V neck, embroidered with flowers and fruit. Apropos also has perhaps the best stock of bridesmaid or mother of the bride type dresses in town. These romantic gowns range flirty to fabulous and are sure to flatter. These are practical clothes with a touch of glamour. My most recent purchase is a "costume fur" chinchilla vest that reverses to a sport vest with a reversable zipper. This has been by constant companion this cold, wet winter. If you are in town, be sure to peruse their lovely and romantic merchandise. read more

I purchased a blouse for my wife as a Christmas present at Apropos. The proprietor ran my credit card and handed it back to me. She then told me it didn't go through and she needed my credit card again. I got my credit card statement yesterday and it showed two charges from the store in the same amount on the same day. I took my statement to the proprietor this morning and showed her the duplicate charges and reminded her of the situation. She would not accommodate me so I had to go through the credit card company. read more

I have never ever been treated so rude in my life ...i feel like Julia Roberts in pretty woman ..I have money to spend ..but consistently treated RUDE..the store located in Paso Robles has the nicest sweetest people working there ..however I just found out the owner and her daughter who are always rude own the other stores as well ...so never again will I set foot in there stores....I have been in the Slo store at least 5 times ..thinking well everyone has a bad day ...but no excuse...from the moment you step in the store ..and don't even think about having a drink in your hand ..your joyful shopping day has just ended and you will be reprimanded...! ...there are many lovely other boutiques in town ..who graciously welcome you in ..spend you money there. read more

Use caution when shopping here especially if your traveling. We saw an add in the Visitors magazine that interested my wife so I called them about the item and I was told they had it. Decided to wander in to look for a dress for an upcoming event. I had heard that they may have something along the lines of what I wanted. I walked in and immediately saw something that might work. Needless to say I must not have been dressed well enough to be assisted by a sales person. I was passed by a sales person several times and was intently looking at a dress that was hanging higher up on the wall. I had looked through several of their dresses and was not at all impressed by their prices. After the third time of walking over to the dress I was interested in, discussing it with my friend and having the 2nd sales person walk by me and I decided to leave. A shop like this does not deserve my money if they treat me as if I don't have the money to spend. Seriously disappointed and will not be returning even though the dress would have been perfect. My friends and I just love shopping here not only do they have a great selection of things but they are so nice and helpful. (I really don't understand the negative complaints about rudeness as my friends and I have always been treated with friendliness, helpfulness and respect.). It's wonderful to have a shop in slo that carries items that look great and last. I find their clothes fit the slo lifestyle and not overly trendy. I especially like their selection of dresses plus the jewelry is unique. Though it's a small store their items are displayed nicely. The dressing rooms are spacious too and you can breath the air inside without being overwhelmed by perfumery smells. I've been to this store three times to seriously shop for "special occasion" items. All three times I found beautiful things, but couldn't stomach the snotty sales women. Their prices aren't bad and they do have some unique items, but I simply can't stand being treated that way, especially by someone to whom I am considering giving my money. How do you decide whether or not you should be a patron to a store? I make note of the customer service first, then I look at their product. Apropos offered less than poor customer service, and product was uninteresting. We were barely in the store and were harrassed as we were leaving. PERSONALLY, I would not step anywhere near this store again, and I would highly recommend that others do the same. I came in looking for new fall clothes. The first thing I see is the sales woman lecturing a very elderly woman for placing hats on top of scarves. She attempted to help me with jeans- holy cow she was rude! I walked past a mirror briefly & she told me to stop blocking the view of the mirror! She asked my size & I told her a 4 or 6. She told me I looked like a 10 & insisted I try that as my 1st size. After I humored her by doing so, she never checked on me or offered another size. The customer service has been terrible all 3 times I've visited this store over the last year. The owner seems unwilling to do anything but take in money - for example, when I finally asked her outright to call her other store about an item in my size (since she didn't offer), she told me it was a lot of trouble and refused. I've never had any salesperson in any store respond that way. There were several examples of this poor attitude each time I stopped in. There were a couple of items in the store that I was interested in - but I'd rather shop online where the customer service is sure to be better. I've visited the shop twice and both times the customer service was lacking. We walked in today, at about half an hour after opening, and the sales person was still vacuuming. We had to stop looking at clothes and stand aside so she could finish. I was hoping to purchase something I really liked there but the sales person was horribly rude, did not want to call the other store for us, even when she offered to do it for another customer, and followed us around. I came in "just looking" for a dress to wear to a wedding. When I tried it on I could see and feel the good quality and that made me so happy. When I came out of the dressing room, I was met with oohs and aahs by the clerks, who ran and grabbed the perfect scarf to go with the dress. At the weddingI received many compliments on my ensemble and never saw another dressed like me! I never once felt the "snobbiness" that others have expressed in their reviews...in fact they made me feel like a queen from the moment I walked in. This is one of the cutest clothing stores in town with a variety of clothing for all ages. I love how helpful the mother/daughter pair are in helping you find exactly what you are looking for. The store front can be very deceiving as it appears to be nothing...but when you walk in they have upscale fashions with many different clothing styles to choose from. I have been shopping at this store and have bought many items over the years. Yesterday I went in with a friend - both of us were looking for items for upcoming trips. The younger sales girl was very nice. At one point I picked up a pair of cotton embroidered pants that i was interested in for sightseeing. I looked at the price and they were $200 and I laughed and said I liked the pants but didn't like the price and put them back. The older women behind the counter said very loudly "well, if you can't afford them, you can't afford them". I was very surprised that she would say something so rude to a customer. Both of us are in our 50's and were well dressed. My friend and I immediately left and took our business elsewhere. After years of shopping there, I will never set foot in this store again and I doubt my friend will either. read more

Natalie ( I assume one of the owners) I just returned from the Paso store (after talking with you regarding an item I returned for my sister) I went into my closet and counted - I have 67 tops or dresses that I purchased at your store in addition to over 25 pairs of pants and at least 4 pieces of jewelry. In addition I have purchased at least 4 $100 gift certificates, several scarfs and a few undergarments. I work in a winery and wear these cloths and get loads of compliments on then and on numerous occasions referred female customers to your store. I welcome you to visit my home /closet to verify theses numbers. I understand your need to talk about the return with me but the conversation should have ended there with you saying something like "well this is an unusual situation but we value you as a customer and will happily make the exchange." End of story. I am satisfied and would Have walked out with an item I had had saved for me. INSTEAD you gridded on about how you go over every piece of clothing with a fine tooth comb and a hole -no matter how small- would NEVER get by you. Thus implying that my sister had done the damage and was trying to get it replaced for free I sincerely hope you will expose yourself to some good customer service training. Or perhaps you can afford to offend a VERY loyal customer. I am so sad about the way you treated me. Yes you did approve the exchange but too little too late. Found a dress I wanted to try on in the store the older lady came up took it out of my husbands hands and looked at me stated that's not going to fit you its too small. She walked off with the dress and hung it up in the back of the store. We felt very uncomfortable so we were leaving the store and heard the younger lady say to another customer that she was waiting on " You would be stupid if she did not buy that dress".
