Paris in the heart of Tribeca! I finally snagged a reservation at Frenchette, and it absolutely lived up to the hype--and its spot on the NYTimes Best 100 list. We went for the Restaurant Week menu and were seriously impressed. Yes, prices here are on the higher side, but the $60 per person weekly menu is a great value for the quality, execution, and overall experience. The place is exactly what you want from a Parisian bistro: buzzy, cozy, and effortlessly chic. The dim lighting, warm wood accents, and red leather banquettes make you feel like you've stepped into a classic French film. What we ordered: * Soupe de Poisson with saffron aïoli - rich, comforting, and deeply flavorful * Langue de Bœuf Sauce Piccante - tender beef tongue with cornichons that cut through the richness * Blanquette de Veau - beautifully braised veal with riz pilaf, classic and satisfying * Duck Haché à cheval with mushroom duxelles - indulgent and packed with umami * Chocolate Mousse - airy, decadent, and perfectly balanced * Île Flottante - a light, elegant finish with passion fruit caramel and coconut anglaise For drinks, I started with a Calvados highball, then we moved on to Le Pech Abusé, Vin de France 2021, which was excellent. Frenchette's extensive natural wine list is clearly one of its strengths. Service was warm and friendly overall, though a bit spotty at times--we did need to remind our server about the wine we had ordered, and the same was true for a side of frites. That said, the staff was gracious, and it didn't take away too much from an otherwise great experience. Housed in a beautiful 1915 building in the Tribeca West Historic District, Frenchette feels special from the moment you walk in. Came here because it was my birthday girl's choice. I know she likes French food, but I honestly believe it's the mashed potatoes at this establishment that calls her name. Rightfully so. They were to die for. It was my first time visiting because I usually find French food too heavy and rich. Most of these dishes ( there were a lot) were fairly balanced and a few were even healthy. A few sad things and one that would cause me not to return. The soup was only lukewarm. My daughter loves that soup. Fish soup. I'll put the fancy name under the picture. Lol, she loves it but the entire table was disappointed with the temperature. The biggest faux pas ( see, I can be French!) was when you order 8 courses and the wine that you carefully chose with the sommelier comes out AFTER the first two courses. That is pretty unforgivable to me. That wine was not inexpensive. No restaurant is perfect all the time. Classic French fare in a classic setting... Not impressed with the food but the atmosphere was nice and service was great. Duck frites - duck was cooked nicely and the skin was crispy. Not seasoned a whole lot. I would easily take a Peking duck over this. Ratio of fries to duck was too high. No ketchup to dip the fries into. Half chicken - also cooked well, wish there was more sauce/jus. The mashed potatoes had a silky smooth texture. Charred carrots - bland, wish there was honey or just more seasoning on them. Labneh underneath was great but not enough. Do not recommend. Paris Brest - favorite bite of the night. Rich pistachio flavor and crispy/crunchy layers. Small though. Approx $80 after tax/tip. I have returned back at Frenchette! The atmosphere is lovely and buzzy with excitement and life! The staff are always knowledgeable and lovely with guests. We ordered bread, oysters, and crab beignets to share! We each got a cocktail and ordered a bottle of red. It was all right per the recommendation :/ I honestly didn't like my duck confit the second time lol ... very disappointed but my friend loved her tartare! Frenchette has been on my list to visit for a while. Finally had dinner here for nyc restaurant week. This classic French bistro is a must visit. Elegant restaurant, lively atmosphere, perfectly dim, and delicious French cuisine. The service was also top notch from start to finish. My friend and I shared everything. My favorites were the fish soup, the duck hache, and the passion fruit caramel. I also haven't had veal in a while and I also enjoyed this dish. Shoutouts first go to the very friendly woman working as the maître d' was able to accommodate our group of six as the person who made our reservation goofed. If I was just judging this place on service, I'd be giving this place five stars. Also side note: They charge $9 for cappuccinos...oh (wasn't mine at least.) Restaurant Week 5/many. Anyway, I went to this very popular bistro very recently for Restaurant Week (which I will be shortening to RW from now on) which is $60 for dinner or $45 for lunch sans dessert. Outside of the woman in front, our waiter was also nice helping with orders as well as allergies among other things. We were cramped but that was all on the person who made the reservation and the inside had a nice cozy ambiance with somewhat dim lighting. I ordered a Gin with Calvados to drink for $20 which had plenty of said apple brandy and it was sweet with a slight bitterness at the end from the gin. It was tasty and mostly worth it because of the amount of alcohol. Before I begin the RW menu review, there were a few other dishes ordered off the a la carte menu. Someone ordered the Baguette for $12 from their bakery with beurre demi-sel. Outside of its absurd price point, it was pretty standard. It had a good crunch but I have preferred the flavor from many other spots with my personal favorite baguette in the city being from Le Fournil. If they're going to charge for bread, it has to be really good (see Four Horsemen among others) but this wasn't worth it. The Smoked Trout Beignets with "ranch'ette" for $16 were decent coming with five pieces. There was a bit of fishiness and smokiness from the trout though the texture wasn't very beignet like. For the rest of the dishes below, I'll be listing the price point on the menu outside of RW though the portions of course could be different but they seem similar. I started with the Soupe de Poisson listed as a fish soup with saffron aioli which is normally $23. I had asked the waiter to confirm that there wasn't squid in there (I doubted but made sure) and apparently it's made from crab, shrimp, fish, and some other things with there being I believe a toast point or something similar in the middle of the soup with something creamy on top which was nice to mix into said soup. The soup had a nice stock and plenty of fish flavor with some texture from the stock and was a highlight of the meal outside of one issue. Said problem was with adding crab as there is occasionally going to be some pieces of cartilage which has the same texture and consistency of plastic and I unfortunately got three pieces of it which was not a welcome surprise. Outside of that, this was fantastic. My main dish along with a few others was the Duck Confit with romano beans and frisée which is normally $34. The duck was very tender compared to most spots with perfectly rendered fat and the mix of greens was nice. It was however surprisingly salty for a duck confit and it could have used a bit more crunch. It was decent with some major faults with a good portion size. Another person had the Poulet Rôti with a roast chicken and pommes purée which I believe came with the same where a quart is normally $28 (from the lunch/midday menu) which they appeared to enjoy. In prior years, it seems the dessert choice was from the main menu and I was looking forward to having the Pistachio Paris-Brest but unfortunately they had a special menu for desserts. My choice was the Gateaux Aux Myrtilles (or blueberry cake) with honey cake and mascarpone glace. Said gateau had a nice texture and I appreciated that the dessert as a whole was not super sweet with there being a pleasant floral flavor. The blueberry flavor were fresh whether it was the sauce or the berries themselves and it was a pleasant light dessert. The other options were a daily Sorbet (cantaloupe and some other flavor) as well as a Chocolate Mousse with Crème fraîche Chantilly and cocoa nibs which someone else liked a lot. This wasn't my favorite French place I've been to nor even my favorite bistro I have had for RW (the pretty close by La Sirene beats this place by a mile for instance) but the food was overall good with some faults in most dishes. If the service was lackluster or the portion sizes weren't adequate, I would give this place a star or two less but that definitely wasn't the case here. Everything was delicious, but my favorites were the tarte tatin d'échalotes and the country rib chop. The tarte was packed with flavor; it was like a French onion soup in tarte form. The country rib chop was perfect - moist, tender, and so flavorful on a bed of sauce. I would highly recommend both of these dishes. The pate and duck confit were good but not as memorable. The pate is a coarse pate, and it might just be my personal preference for a smoother pate. Service: Service was excellent. Our server was very attentive and friendly. Someone kept coming around to refill our water throughout the meal. Our sever also came to check on us after our food was served to ask how it was. The oysters with sausage and sourdough pancakes were the stars of the show here -- well-prepared, simple dishes with flawless execution. The duck hache was also good, but was more like a duck burger on mushrooms than a hash. A very popular and busy restaurant . We had a mixed experience . We ordered a baguette which was cold and would have loved a warm roll . Then came our salad order. This was superb! Sometimes French restaurants serve beautifully plated dishes with tiny portions that can be a little bland -- just my opinion. If you feel differently, write your own review. Came back for a quick dinner and ordered wayyyy less this time around. Started with the house bread, paired with the brouillade, followed by a steak frites and a duck frites. The duck frites was not on the printed menu however our server was kind enough to ask the kitchen if there was any duck prepped and available. Lo and behold, there was a duck breast available to be served with the delicious Mornay sauce. I had two glasses of a heavy red suggested by my server, which was great for leisurely sipping. I still left very full and with a to go bag with leftover frites. My first visit included a green salad, white asparagus, and everything else that I ordered during my second visit. We had an absolutely wonderful dinner at Frenchette last week. Everyone, including my 16 year old son, came away thoroughly impressed. First time here! Really quaint restaurant! I was worried with some of the reviews mentioning it was too cramped but luckily I stopped in at 11am on Sunday and we were the first customers to walk in. From the moment we entered, the staff was very friendly and kind. We were celebrating an anniversary and the staff made sure to congratulate us, and served us some bubbly to celebrate. There was also some nice jazzy music in the background, with just the right volume to not interrupt our conversations. We ordered some oysters which were super fresh! and also the mergez, which was rich in flavor and texture. It was served over a flavorful bed of sliced onions and peppers stewed to perfection. After that, we decided to try their carrots and escargot. I have to say, I've never been served escargot in such a unique way! It is served with a bed of scrambled soft cooked eggs that are delightful! velvety, buttery, and rich! I could have a whole plate of that alone! Absolutely the best food I've eaten in my lifetime, 66 yrs young. The ingredients just tasted better. The food was still good, I went there 3 nights in a row on a seven night stay in Tribeca. Everything was so well thought out and completely delicious. The bartenders were attentive, extremely knowledgeable, excellent servers and made me the most incredible after dinner drink with espresso and liquor. Very cozy too! No TV's! Extremely comfortable. The clearest sign of an overheated economy? $12 for bread and baguette to start the meal (even if the baguette was baked next door with a lovely crunch). My omelette was a well executed French omelette with a nice degree of fluffiness, although I prefer the sharper cheeses that Balthazar employs. Zero qualms about the fries. I used to love this place, but after today I won't be coming back. The customer service was genuinely shocking. One server repeatedly mixed up our orders and placed the coffees down so abruptly it felt like she was throwing them onto the table. Then another server came over to clarify the order and addressed me directly. When I tried to explain that it was actually my friend who ordered, he cut me off with a sharp, aggressive "No, I'm talking to you." The entire table went silent -- it was that rude and unexpected. Friday 2:45pm I enjoy holidays ( winter and summer) as nyc can get quieter as people visit their families or are on holiday in the Hamptons, etc . More importantly, restaurants that are difficult to get into now have availability. I met up with a friend who lives in Downtown for a Christmas lunch catchup and decided to sit at the bar. Because it was a late lunch , table service was winding down and the place started clearing out . We got o spend a nice semi quiet lunch consisted of anchovies linguini ( the pasta was cooked to perfection and the sauce was delicious), duck and french fries . I don't like overeating , with the bartenders recommendation , we didn't over order. Great restaurant with good service . We were assisted by the somm to choose a very reasonably priced bottle. Overall it's a 3.5 star for me, but I don't feel like it reached 4 star because of price and value. ~ Duck Frites (3.5/5) ~ First of all, this costs $54 and I'm not sure what I'm getting is worth this price. It's a nice duck breast alright, but there are room for improvement. Overall, it's very well seasoned and flavourful. The meat has a slightly pink centre, and it is quite juicy and not very tough (not the most tender duck breast I had but it's good). The top thin layer of duck skin is crispy, but the under/deep fat is quite chewy, so the crisp is barely present. The fries are well seasoned, even though some are not crispy but still they tasted good! It came with a bearnaise sauce which is rich, creamy and tangy. Since I found the duck breast itself flavourful enough to stand alone, I ate the fries with bearnaise sauce, and it was a delight. ~ Paris Brest a la Pistache (4/5) ~ Very good dessert! The choux pastry is well baked and crispy. The cream have strong pistachio flavour, and a lot of pistachio crunches! It's probably a bit much if 1 person is to devour this dessert entirely, as it gets quite heavy and gradually I found it a bit sweet. Still, I finished the whole dessert myself and left feeling satisfied. Will I be back? Probably It has really good ambience, service is good, food is good, but it's not very good value. The service was good enough and the room is nice enough. And, the menu is fairly interesting. The food however leaves much to be desired. The bread was ok. No crunch to the baguette. Very doughy. The butter was very good though. The appetizers were a mixed bad. The leek appetizer was very good, while the octopus was inedible as it was severely undercooked. The peppers and potatoes accompanying it were excellent. As for the entrees, the vegetable tagine was decent, though nothing special. And, the swordfish was also inedible, this time because the fish had been over-cooked. It was impossible to eat without swigging water. The highlight of the meal came down to the chocolate mouse. It was likely the best chocolate mouse I've had. Excellent. The coffees were also a mixed bag, with the expresso being very good and the capuccino being just terrible. Overall it is a "nice" place but you can do much better in NYC. Just down the block at Odeon you are likely to have a better meal (at least better food). read more

I don't want to write this review but feel compelled to do so since I value the input of others on Yelp. Therefore I need to share even non-positive observations. TLDR: the rare Manhattan restaurant to which we will not return. It was not bad. It just was not good. Frankly we were surprised - to the negative - in numerous ways. Three examples of what disappointed us. One - everything is just old. Not old as in "wow that is so beautiful and fun to see I'm so glad we can try it/see it/use it". But more "These chairs are old. Those bare fluorescent bulb ceiling lights are old. And why straight fluorescent? These dishes and flatware are old. The floor is older than old. Etc. Why? I don't get it. Two - the wait staff was friendly and we are very accommodating of people's choices. But several of the staff in old, rough jeans just turned us off. They don't need to dress for a big night out, but it was nearly to the level of disrespectful. Three - the food was fine, just mostly uninspired. Le Gratin 20x better. Minetta tavern 15x better. Claud 20x better. None of those are "fine dining". They are in a similar price point, directionally or very French, show effort in every way by every person. And at each there are a few really good dishes and they try hard. Pain Maison - 3/10. $12 for a baguette with butter is ridiculous. Yes, we chose to order it. Not warm. Felt like it had been baked in the morning, which is not what you want in a baguette. Very hard crust and pure white flour. Just not very good. Soupe de Poisson - 10/10. The star of the night. So different from everything else in that it was super-flavorful. Split into two bowls to accommodate us was very nice. Really "poisson" flavor. We were told it had no cream. Let's assume that to be true. A winner. Chicorees - 5/10. Pedestrian. Not bad. Just not good. Missing meaningful flavor. 1/2 Poulet Roti - 5/10. Same. Halibut - 3/10. Same but worse. The fish itself was not soft and easy to cut with a fork as we for sure expected. Tarte au Chocolat - 9/10. Pretty good if you like chocolate. Relatively small. Good flavor. Crepe Souffle - 8/10. We did enjoy the caramel-passion fruit sauce. The crepe (filled with anglaise) was fine. We went in having two very conflicting data points. One, Frenchette has a solid reputation and appears on many "Best French Restaurants in NYC" lists. On the other hand, its Yelp rating is 3.6, which we consider pretty weak. We have no idea how it gets on those lists. Try harder, maybe Frenchette could be great. Maybe it was years ago. First, just close for two months and overhaul the space and everything used or seen by diners. Second work with the team to motivate them more - in the kitchen and on the floor. That is the owner's/manager's job, it's NOT a knock on the team. Let us know what that is done and we will go back. Until then, not. read more
