The Warwick Is a Lovely Hotel. Its Continental Breakfast Is an Embarrassment to Everything the Hotel Stands For. Let me be fair before I am critical: the Warwick Hotel on 54th Street is a genuinely nice property. The rooms are well-appointed, the location is excellent, and the overall experience of staying here has been a pleasant one for our family of four. The staff at the front desk and throughout the hotel have been courteous and professional. Which is precisely why what passes for a continental breakfast at Murals on 54 is so jarring and so difficult to overlook. The contrast between the quality of the hotel itself and the quality of what is being served at breakfast is stark enough to warrant a review entirely on its own. We received complimentary breakfast vouchers for four guests, valued at $24 per person, as a courtesy after our room was not ready upon check-in on Monday afternoon. We appreciated the gesture sincerely and understood that delays happen. What we did not appreciate was discovering what $24 per person actually buys at this restaurant, and what it communicates about how seriously the kitchen takes its responsibility to the guests it serves. The pastries were stale. Not slightly past their peak, but genuinely stale, the kind of stale that suggests they were not baked that morning or perhaps even the morning before. The croissants, which should be the centerpiece of any respectable continental breakfast and a point of quiet pride for a hotel of this standing, were rock hard. A proper croissant should shatter delicately at the first bite, yielding buttery, laminated layers that dissolve almost immediately. These required effort to bite through. Serving hardened croissants at a hotel of this caliber is not a minor oversight. It is a failure of basic quality control that any competent kitchen manager should catch before a single plate leaves the pass. When the most fundamental item on a continental breakfast menu misses this badly, it sets a tone for everything that follows. The "fresh juice" was not fresh. It was bottled, made from concentrate, and tasted exactly like what it was. In a city where fresh-squeezed orange juice is available on virtually every corner and in nearly every diner and café within walking distance, describing bottled concentrate as fresh juice is misleading at best and quietly contemptuous of the guest at worst. The word "fresh" should not appear anywhere near a product that arrived sealed from a distributor. This is not a minor semantic quibble. It is a misrepresentation of what you are being served. The yogurt was Chobani, presented in its original retail cup, placed on a plate and brought to the table. A cup of Chobani yogurt retails for well under $2 at any grocery store in the neighborhood. There was no granola, no fresh fruit, no honey, no accompaniment of any kind, and no presentation whatsoever beyond the cup itself sitting on a plate. It was a grocery store product served in a restaurant setting at a restaurant price, and there is simply no graceful way to characterize that as acceptable for a hotel of the Warwick's reputation. We are genuinely grateful that the vouchers made this meal free for our family, because $96 for four people for what we received would have been indefensible and infuriating in equal measure. The Warwick Hotel clearly holds itself to a high standard across every other dimension of the guest experience. The rooms are lovely, the service throughout the property has been warm and professional, and the hotel carries itself with an elegance that its history warrants. Murals on 54 is not currently living up to any of that. We would sincerely encourage hotel management to revisit the continental breakfast program before more guests are asked to pay $24 a head for stale pastries, bottled concentrate, and supermarket yogurt served without even the pretense of presentation. The hotel is genuinely better than this. The breakfast should be too. read more

I would have never thought I'd dine at a Vietnamese restaurant inside of the historic Warwick hotel ! I'm sure lots of people know but this is one of the most famous hotels in New York and growing up here it was always talked about this place because the Beatles and The Supremes stayed at this hotel. So it was an absolute honor to even dine here. . I dined here with a small group and during prime time dinner hours and it wasn't too crowded (though it was the middle of the week) that's probably the best time to dine here to avoid a crowd. . Murals on 54 is a decent place. I ordered the prime rib burger which was a delight. A medium rare patty that melts in your mouth. The fries were excellent and I wish I got two ketchup mini bottles instead of one. You really need two. Luckily it wasn't busy at all on a Wednesday night. After an all day travel day, I needed the peace and serenity. Although, my my was a bit occupied, the murals on the wall are from the 1930's and is part of the charm and historic value to the Warwick New York. For dessert, I ordered black coffee an apple tart served with ice cream. What a great way to end a meal. read more

Murals on 54 is an excellent spot that can satisfy both western and Asian food cravings at the same time. On the one hand, their Shaken Steak was true to its name and had an even and thorough sear that enveloped a delicious and tender medium rare interior. The Thit Bo Steak Frites also didn't take a back seat when dressed beautifully with the bone marrow butter. On the other hand, Murals on 54 offered more "traditional" dishes like their Saigon House Pho, Chicken Satay Skewers, and Spring Rolls. A simple elegant lunch at Mural's on 54th. I arrived late for my group lunch around 12:45. The place was empty only one other table was seated besides ours. I had the scallops and greens which was delicious. They were tender and succulent. I got to try some of my friends broccoli sprouts which were excellent it tasted like a mix of soy sauce and brown sugar to make the sauce really flavorful. I could have eaten that all day. Just as fast as our lunch came so our meals go. The portions are small to medium so don't expect to overate because of large portions. They got the size about right so that people can return to work after lunch and not suffer from a food coma. read more

The food does not live up to the price. Came for breakfast for the "any way you want eggs" plate with Juice. It was $40 bucks. Usually I wouldn't care the price but the food quality has to match. The eggs were bland, the hash brown looked like a McDonald's hash brown, the Turkey bacon looked like baloney. And to top it off the waitress was rude when we asked her for separate checks. Me and a large group of co-workers stayed at Warwick hotel for a week and had pre-paid coupons (open buffet) for 7 days at Murals. Food was pretty avarage and plenty, nothing special for a open buffet. Bad thing about this place is waiters/waitress being rude especially if you are a hotel guest. Most of the days we were kept waiting standing at the entrence for manager to show us a table, even %70 of tables are empty. And when we came with a group of 3-4 people, we were requested to sit 3 people to 1 table and other guy next to a stranger again with several empty 6-man tables, because they wanted to spare empty tables for non-guest customers. read more

Last year, my family chose this place to have Thanksgiving dinner. We liked it so much that we decided to go there again today for Thanksgiving. It will be our last visit. The main problem was the service. We were never offered anything to drink other than water. My son's glass sat empty most of the meal. When my husband asked the waiter for more water while he was cleaning the table next to us, he said okay and then went on cleaning the table even though the restaurant was not full (i.e., the table was not needed for more patrons). After about ten minutes, he finally brought the water pitcher and filled up our glasses (all of which were empty by that point), but only did so about halfway. My husband asked for the wine list and ordered us each a glass of wine. At the end of the meal, we had been overcharged for the wine, and we had been charged a forced gratuity for three people. The meal was a buffet. What exactly did the waiter deserve $30 for doing? He had refilled water once and brought two glasses of wine, and he did that badly. There were several men in suits who worked there standing around, but none of them helped or even smiled or greeted us or anything. All in all, the service was horrible, and I am still so angry that we were charged (without prior notice) the gratuity for such horrible service. If it hadn't been Thanksgiving, we would have complained. Even though the food was pretty good, it was really hard to feel comfortable during this meal because of the way the staff acted and the inability to get drinks to go with that meal. We have been to this restaurant twice, both times for the Thanksgiving dinner. The first time, I was very pleased. The food had been great and I had no issues at all with the service. But this year, the experience was quite different. The food was /pretty/ good this time, but not outstanding like the year before. The biggest problem was with the service. Our waiter, an eastern European fellow by the name of George, was possibly THE WORST waiter I have ever endured in my life. I am not tough to please, especially at a buffet-style restaurant. In fact, if there was a drink dispenser, I would be happy not to have a waiter at all. But this fellow George filled our waters once when we arrived and I think one more time during the hour plus that we were there. We had to ask several times for a refill. We ordered two glasses of wine at one point and he ended up overcharging us for it on the way out. The kicker: for two water refills and bringing us two glasses of wine, a mandatory 15% gratuity was added to our bill (which was over $200 to begin with, so a little over $30). I worked tip jobs in a previous life and I certainly understand the importance of tipping for service in our wonderful society that doesn't pay waitstaff more than a nominal amount, but seriously, to add it in automatically for a party of three for buffet drink service is outright offensive -- especially when the drink service sucked! I had a great time here. My party and I had a lovely waiter, the murals gave us much to talk about, and the food was great. What made it even better was the presentation. The menu was also pretty reasonable so you won't be breaking the bank here. Just a bit of advice: Be mindful when tipping. When I received my check, it just included the total amount. So I added a 21% tip. When I got home and reviewed my online banking, I saw that the total that I'd been charged already included a 20% so it seemed as though I'd added a 41% tip in total. My bf's mom made a reservation for 6 of us on OpenTable - apparently they couldn't take 6 of us at 6, so we showed up at 5:30, and other people were sitting at our table. It was a mistake, and they were escorted to another seat. One of our guests arrived early and was told to go to Randolph's to wait across the hall, where he was promptly ignored for 15-20 minutes before being allowed to order a glass of (bad) wine. When we sat down at our large corner table, the 3 seats near the wall did not have bread plates, and our water glasses were only ever refilled when we held them up and waved them in the waiter's face. My bf ordered a dirty vodka martini on the rocks, and when it arrived up and he corrected them, they said, "But it was on ice before we poured it!" Not quite the same thing. It took them 10 min to bring a glass of ice, and the thing wasn't even dirty. My appetizer was good - the tomato/mozzarella salad, which is not what the description was on the menu, but it was still good. My friend ordered the soup du jour, which took an extra 10 minutes to arrive after the rest of our salads (for no reason and no explanation was given - in fact, they seemed annoyed that he expected his soup to be there at the same time!) Entrees were very blah - my shrimp risotto was Tasteless; my bf's pork chop was overcooked, but his mashed sweet potatoes were ok; the only winner on the table were the scallops over baked risotto and asparagus. It really was delicious! Dessert was good, but it's really difficult to mess up sorbet and cheesecake. In all, they really need to retool this restaurant, bc there are SO MANY BETTER OPTIONS in this neighborhood. read more

"Tuna and sea beans" = Tuna encrusted with stale breadcrumb and fried? and a pile of seaweed salad with ONE sea bean (not beans). I went here for a weekday lunch. It was more than I usually spend for lunch but sometimes the little extra is worth it if the food is good. It wasn't. I had a chopped salad that was not only a tiny portion, but also looked if it was macerated (instead of chopped). My friend had the tuna nicoise and she said it was unlike any tuna nicoise she ever had--I don't think she liked it. The place was half empty, but the service was really slow. I think sometimes hotel restaurants don't try to give good service because they have a captive audience. My visit to this restaurant reinforced that idea. read more

I came in at 1 to use my $10 coupon as long as I spend $20 this time. The place was completely empty, the Host was very happy to seat me and honor my coupon as well. Off to a good start. Even seated me at the only sunny table in the place. I ordered a Sam and the garlic shrimp pizza. The pizza seemed to be a pre-fab, frozen thin crust type, but the shrimp on top were good. The beer was fine, too. I did have to swat away a few small flys at my table, so who knows how clean the place was. It seems clean, but thats just cause it was quiet in there and the furniture and decor is above average. Its a bit on the pricey side, 8 bucks for my beer, so I dotn think I'd go here again. The ajoining hotel also closed off the sidewalk outside so they could vacuum the old rotten faded carpet they rolled out. That was fun to watch out the window. read more

I was staying at the hotel and came for their brunch buffet. Food was cold and not so great and the service was slow and most of the employees seem to not be happy. No one check on me ( except to take plates away) and I have to be asking for juice etc....after I complained that I waited for juice almost 20 minutes then one of them check on me but it was too late... They include 15 percent tip ( even when I was one person) the service and the food didn't deserve that 15 percent. For almost $ 50 you eat better anywhere else. read more

1. The price is unreasonably expensive compare to the food (buffet) provided. Hotel might have charged high meal price since it is Christmas day meal. But with the same reason, the food and service should be as high quality for the occasion. It ended up they care for their profit only, not customer's special occasion/feeling. It was my once a year meal that was specially arranged to enjoy Christmas with my children. I made special trip for NC to NY and this supposed to be the meal for the occasion. It was ruined !! 2. They arranged us at 4 pm appointment, but closing the buffet service at 4:30 pm. I saw other customer who's appointment was 4:15 pm and they had only 15 min to eat the Christmas dinner there.. 3. The young manager lady was not experienced at all. She did not have proper manner, showed her temper, offered limited compensation and pushed customer to choose the option that can hardly be any compensation of customer's side. The offered wine (as compensation) had to be opened and consumed at the place, where I don't drink alcohol. No option. So.. It was another pain.. 4. Asked information desk where ladies rooms are.. He was on the phone (the only available who is willing to respond on my question), pointing the outside door direction with his chin (not even fingers), where I could not find any. Ended up that I had to ask other customer of the hotel, and got the direction. He (the info. desk staff) later told me that ladies room is inside the resturant which is close to the outside door. OK - so where did I make my first mistake? Ahh, I remember now, walking in to this place was the first mistake. I was told to take any table I wanted, Being that I had office work to do and a laptop with me so I grabbed a table for three and spread out a wee bit. One other person was in the restaurant. One Other Person. While I waited for my server I was approached by one of the hosts and told I needed to move to the next table, being that the table I had chosen for was meant for three people. Note - these are small table, no more than 28 inches wide. I explained how being that there was only one other person in the restaurant I didn't see it being a problem and preferred to stay where I was. End of story? Nope. A few minutes later the person who I believe was the lead host came up to me and told me I HAD to move - that I was sitting at a table for three and three people might come in and need it. I noted there were now two other people in the restaurant and I thought they would be ok. They insisted. I moved. My waiter finally arrived for coffee. I chose the buffet. The scrambled eggs were runny and lukewarm. The potatoes were those awful potatoes that are machine processed and come out of a 30 pound bag. Just terrible. The topper, of course, is this. I finish my "meal" in about twenty minutes at which point as I am getting ready to leave they seat a single person at the three top table from which I was moved. Not Recommended at all. This is actually a 0 star review. My family and I came here for dinner this past Christmas and weren't told that we had reserved during the time they were still serving brunch. This was our misunderstanding, but we were still seated and were not informed that the brunch was about to end in less than a half an hour. The buffet was alright, but definitely not as good as the price they charged us. Though we were just a party of 4, the restaurant added an extra 18% gratuity without our consent. Service was fine up until we politely conveyed to both the waiter and the manager how unhappy we were. Afterwards, my family was ignored for the rest of our stay, which was a good hour before we decided to leave. The manager was inexperienced and reacted rudely upon hearing our concerns. Christmas Brunch - Don't $75 per person for Christmas Brunch, ick fine, it's NYC. However, allowing seating at 4pm when the buffet closes at 4:30, not fine. Seating people at 4:15, really not fine. Buffet was good, not amazing. Definitely not worth the price. The decor nothing to be wowed by and you could nearly trip on the tablecloths as you tried to leave your table. The service was nice and friendly enough. I did observe several tables that were left waiting forever to order, so I'm thinking it's a bit inconsistent. However, the kicker was the manager. I have to say I didn't expect the price tag, especially for what we got so I was a bit shocked, especially since our reservation was a 4pm and they didn't inform us at seating that we only had 30 min to cram down our meal, so I confronted the manager about this. There is a nice way to deal with irritated customers. Apologize for the inconvenience and offer something. What I got was "I can't do anything about it" and a combative "well, what do you want me to do?" It is not up to the customer to think of how to fix a situation. It is management's responsibility to try to please the customer. I sat down determined to just pay and get the hell out but mentioned to the server that I was very unhappy. The manager returned and pretty much demanded why we weren't happy and, in the nicest way possible, blamed us for not giving her an idea about how to fix it. Seriously? After explaining that it was really management's responsibility to figure that out, we got a small discount (basically the tip they already tacked on) and a bottle of mediocre prosecco which we had to finish there. Only after we gave her several suggestions about how to "fix this" of course. I can't really blame the server, but after we got the bottle of prosecco, he basically ignored our table for the rest of the time we were there. I usually tip extra when I inconvenience a server like that, but being ignored I didn't appreciate (besides they already added a 18% tip to our ridiculously expensive fast food experience).
