It has been a year since I've been back and I'm glad to see they're still thriving. Le French Diner is a rare glimpse of what NYC dining used to be. Before COVID, before restaurants were priced out of their rent, before caviar and wagyu showed up on every menu. This hole in the wall is a time capsule of what great NYC dining used to be. We started waiting at 4:55 and were the first on line. By the time they opened by 5:30, the line was full. We ordered the beef tartare, the octopus, soft shell crab, hanger steak, and duck. Everything was well prepared and delicious. Plus you get to see the dance that happens between the chef, the host, and the runner. Working in any kitchen is difficult, but creating all this magic out of a restaurant that's the size of a studio apartment is amazing. I hope to be back for many more years. Teeny, tiny, very authentic feeling while being directed to one of the maybe ten barstools facing the working kitchen. I ordered a lovely Bordeaux after choosing the recommended asparagus and (I'm such a sucker for) escargot, followed by their only dessert, a pudding topped with sour cherries. All excellent choices! This tiny, unassuming restaurant truly has some of the best food I've had in recent memory. I initially saw Le French Diner raved about on social media, but it took me a while to finally get to try it. Since the restaurant is so small and doesn't take reservations, we thought our best bet would be to line up ~30 minutes before opening on a Friday night. We arrived at around 5pm and were the third party in line. It was great to have the reassurance that we would have the table, but there were some seats at the bar for a few tables that showed up right at opening too. The restaurant is SMALL. 10 seats at the bar where you feel like you are in someone's kitchen and (I believe) 9 more at small tables around the restaurant. I personally loved the atmosphere and sitting at the bar. Being able to watch the chef prepare all the dishes made the experience cozy and special. We had the Chickpea Crepe, Foie Gras, Escargot, and Seared Duck Breast. Wow. The food was all incredible. I'd get everything other than the chickpea crepe again, which was a little salty for my liking. The foie gras came on top of an amazing apple butter, which perfectly balanced the richness of the foie gras. It was served with the cutest little brioche buns too, which were pillowy and soft. Escargots were good, with a garlicky and buttery sauce. The star of the show for me was the duck breast. Omg I can't stop thinking about it. It was so tender and the skin was so delicious. Fatty and chewy but sooo flavorful wow. I'd go back just for the duck, but really want to try their steak as well. Some tables near us ordered it, and it looked amazing. Le French Diner was such a treat, and I'm happy I finally got around to trying it but also kicking myself because it took me way too long. I will definitely be back!! read more

Decent food, mixed service, questionable ambience. As many establishments do in in the city, this place manufactures scarcity by providing a minuscule number of seats. We love lining up for what we perceive to be rare, sought-after tables, even in sub-10 degree temps. The space goes beyond cozy; it's uncomfortably crammed. This could be someone's hallway in a house. I like cozy dimly lit interiors, but not when my back is literally pressed against another guest's and I'm contorting myself to fit in my corner, and I'm a petite person. Music - loud, all over the place in genre from classical to rock and roll. I was expecting something more laid back and intimate. Hard to hear my friend over the music. Bathroom right up against the kitchen, which is sus. Waves at 5:30 (opening), 7/7:30, 8:30/9. Line up early (20 min at least) before open, and you might get a table for 2. After that, put your name down on the list for 7/7:30 and hunker down at a bar - what we did. And when they call you, PICK UP. Because they will be annoyed if you don't and still show up at their door. They call people as seats become available so they'll keep going down the list if you don't answer. (I saw this happen to a couple who showed up and the owner claimed they hadn't picked up his call. Awkward.) Food was decent tasting but overpriced. Escargots buttery and garlicky, but very small. Crunchy charred sourdough on the side for dipping. Octopus was cooked well, though the accompanying sauce was quite bland. Hanger steak was tender and really salty, with a bed of caramelized onions on top. Reminded me of a French onion soup in a good way. Delicious, piping hot potato gratin complimented the steak. Their offering for glasses of wine is quite limited so you are better off ordering a bottle. The skin contact from Alsace was tangy and reminiscent of a beer to me. Service was great initially considering how much multi-tasking the 3(?) staff members had to do. We were able to place our orders and get our food without too much wait. The owner checked in here and there, always with a smile. However, at the end we miscalculated our tip and received a harsh "you can't do math or this is a really *expletive* tip" reprimand before we corrected it, which soured the experience a good bit and eliminated our desire to return. read more

Cozy little spot with very limited seating, so getting there a bit before opening is key if you want a table. The intimate, no-frills vibe is part of the charm. The food was outstanding. The escargot was perfectly garlicky and easily one of my favorites, and the steak tartare was hands down the best I've ever had, incredibly well balanced, flavorful, and spicy-mustard-forward. The perfectly cooked steak with the potato au gratin-style side was creamy and rich. When I look back on this dinner, the biggest thing I remember is the Hanger steak. I think I am a little picky on steaks and meat and this one was just the perfect marinade, texture, everything. And the au gratin had the best sauce in between I wanted it as my pillow. I went on Saturday around when they opened and I got a seat for two people but they do get busy very quickly so go early or put yourself on the waitlist and go get boba or something! It is a smaller restaurant with some nice music playing. I'd go when I don't have discussion points and serious things to talk about with my friends but rather for the vibe and good time. Came on a Friday 5 minutes before they opened at 5:30 PM, and there was already a line but we got bar seats (which is definitely the move). My boyfriend and I ordered: + Socca de nice + Ouef de mayo + green salad + grilled hangar steak with gratin + Panna cotta with sour cherries Wow, just wow. All of the food was amazing... best eggs ever... every single bite was good though. I usually dislike panna cotta and even that was fantastic. Great wines, too. I really really wanted to enjoy this meal because of how exclusive getting a table feels. In the end, it was a fine meal that wasn't worth waiting an hour to get a table for. The menu is small so we got most of it: grilled octopus (will never not enjoy), oeuf mayo, socca de nice (not a dish I was familiar with, interesting), escargot (always interested in this and this was just as buttery and well-seasoned as I wanted), rabbit leg confit. We also got a cheese board which we usually don't do and in the end it was an interesting mix of cheeses. One thing I particularly enjoyed was how many of the dishes came with an ample amount of bread, which is unusual. Service was quick and super nice. The restaurant is small almost to a fault, so everything is very cramped (especially going to the bathroom). I have heard and seen the crowds, so I came in mid week just at the time of opening. The gentleman taking my order, as this was a small place, recognized I was new, and answered my questions patiently as he poured me a glass of water. I had the seared scallops. Laid on top of pieces of squash. Seasonal ingredients. I usually am not a fan of squash, but this was really good, and had the consistency of a ripe pear. Not mushy at all. The restaurant itself is really small and does not take reservations, but it is absolutely a hidden gem and worth it. Got here around 545 on Thursday night and it was still fairly empty. The place filled up around 630 though and people started having to wait. Would definitely recommend getting there before 630 if you do not want to wait. Below is our ordered food in order of my preference 1. Hanger steak Wow this was absolutely delicious and I could not stop eating it. The steak itself was perfectly cooked. It was so tender and just melts in your mouth. Paired with the sauce was just unstoppable. The potato on the side was also so flavorful and so good. It pairs really well with the steak 2. Octopus One of the best octopus I've ever had. It looks like such a simple dish--just two octopus tentacles sitting there, but it was perfectly cooked. Just the right tenderness. I had a triple kill on the Escargot, Steak tartare and the Octopus. Everything exceeded my expectations -- except for the ridiculous wait time trying to get sat (outside in the rain). The type of person I am, I like a pleasant entry before a good meal. The chickpea appetizer was incredible, as was the charred octopus; easily the best octopus I've ever eaten. The beef tar tar wasn't anything special, nor was the steak with onions. The duck was cooked perfectly, but desperately needed a sauce. The serving was tiny for $40+. The best part of the dish was the carnival squash it came with was incredible. I really wanted to love this place but was very disappointed with the food. The vibe was great and server was warm and friendly, but the food did not live up to all the hype and the price. We started with the escargot with anchovy butter. Did not taste the anchovy at all, and was not salted enough so it didn't bring out the flavor of the escargots. And the escargots were tiny. Then we got the grilled octopus. It was extremely charred. To the point that it masked the flavor of the octopus. And sauce was light and nice though. For main we shared the hanger steak. This was the highlight of the meal. The potato was to die for and steak was well cooked and juicy. Though, one side of the steak was better than the other. And for dessert we got their only dessert, panna cotta with sour cherries. All I can say is skip dessert please. It tasted like Trader Joe's yogurt with sour cherries. Not worth it at all, just walk a couple blocks and get ice cream around the area if you are craving sweets. Not sure if they had a bad night but the food was just ok. Not too good, not too bad. Avoid if you value your time and expect to be treated with basic respect. After 12+ years of dining in NYC, this was hands-down the most bizarre and disrespectful restaurant experience I've had. I've never bothered to leave reviews before, but had to make a Yelp account just to post this given how rudely we were treated. We arrived ~25 minutes before opening (so ~5:05pm for a 5:30pm open) and were the fourth group in line. Despite being well within the 18-person first seating capacity (only 10 people ahead of us), we were told to wait 1-2 hours longer because our group of 3 didn't "fit" their first seating arrangement perfectly, so we had to wait for the next seating. They made us step out of line, and instead wrote down my name/phone number to call back later. Then, they proceeded to seat multiple groups behind us with no issue. The entire rest of the line (probably 10-15 people deep at this point) ended up somehow walking in with no problem. Apparently, if they sat us right then and there at the counter, there would be one seat open/leftover (yes you read that correctly, a single seat), which was the end of the world for them. Based on their actions, they clearly think that filling every single seat is more important than treating customers fairly or honoring a first-come, first-served system that they've instituted themselves. They said they didn't want to make more people "wait" on a busy Saturday night, but for some reason, it was fine if they made the 3 of us wait another 2 hours because we didn't fit into their game of musical chairs? At one point, I even offered to dine standing by the high table so two in my party could sit on the high-chairs (thereby leaving 2 seats open for another couple behind us) but they still refused. Anyway, they eventually called us back at 7:30pm--2.5 hours after we arrived. We had already left as we absolutely were not going to be spending a dime there based on this gross disrespect, so we turned down their offer. To the management team - if your business model is ruined by one empty chair for an hour, maybe clean up your finances instead of wasting your customers' time and treating them like second-class citizens, especially when they take time out of their day/week to wait outside your restaurant. Crazy concept I know, but it seems like most other restaurants (both highly/lowly rated) in this city can do it, so figure it out. I'm not naive enough to think this review will magically change anything, but I do hope that any future new customers will be aware of how they may end up being treated. I would recommend you take your business somewhere they actually value and respect your patronage (and treat you like human beings at that). Bonus: After reading some other reviews, this doesn't seem like a one-off--they just like to randomly power trip and arbitrarily treat you like trash if you're not a regular or industry insider (as this place likes to be known to serve), so expect to be treated like an inconvenience. read more

The one thing is that the restaurant itself is super small, so big groups won't work. The servers are attentive and it's easy to get their attention because the space is so packed. My friend and I shared the gem salad, the rabbit, and the steak. The gem salad was good but nothing to write home about, my friend and I just wanted a veggie and palate cleanser though and this did the trick. The rabbit was so tender and fell off the bone, and the sauce really was a unique and delicious finisher to the dish. The steak was well-cooked but a little salty for my liking, though my friend thought it was perfect and disagrees. The highlight of the night for me was the potatoes on the steak - they were creamy, well-seasoned, and had just the right amount of softness while maintaining a bite. It's a little expensive, but definitely affordable if you compare other similarly well-rated french restaurants. Ok, so I'm pretty much an amateur when it comes to eating French cuisine and it became one of the focuses of my trip into NYC from Houston. I didn't want to pick a French restaurant that was '$$$$' because quite frankly, I was just too intimidated, and can I really appreciate what's in front of me without knowing what the "norm" is? Mayhap I was afraid I would set the bar too high for French cuisine. I knew I was coming in rather late into the city, and thankfully, this place had relatively late hours. One thing most travelers must know about NYC is their listed closing time is when they're trying to turn off the lights, meaning there leaves a lot of room for interpretation on when last call is. Though they might continue to serve you drinks (and maybe the occasional snack), their kitchen could close an hour, maybe even 2 hours early. I thought I arrived well within good time, but it was quite the opposite--again, my mistake. I'm not from around here. The friendly host, chef, and server (quite possibly the owner) initially turned me away stating they don't have any seats available. I asked if I could be put on a waiting list, that I just got off the plane and was looking forward to a meal here. He said he couldn't guarantee me a spot, but I did not hesitate to state that I would take a chance, even if the odds were low. I think he liked that response because he ended up grabbing a clipboard from across the room that had some scrap paper on it and took my number down. We mosseyed on over to the nearest burger and fries joint and at least softened our hunger. Eventually, about half an hour later, we got the call that we made the cut. I was super stoked and it just made the experience all the more exciting. The restaurant is a bar-turned-to-kitchen. The front had just enough room for some high tables. Regardless of the rather tight spacing, it felt comfortable. It's a rather low-lit place, but the energy in the room felt amazing, and the host's friendliness and energy only added to the experience. The menu is condensed into a page, and my instincts tell me they switch it up pretty often and reprint often. Prices seem quite reasonable, especially for items usually found in fine dining. If you're sitting at the bar, which would've been a fantastic experience, you're sitting just a few feet away watching them cook up a storm. It smelt amazing in there. We ordered a lot. A LOT. The pacing was noteworthy. The suggestions for food? Spot on. The food itself? Absolutely delicious. The ambience? Cozey, fun, uplifting, yet strangely...romantic. I absolutely would recommend this place for a date night, as you can find good beverages to pair here, as well. It honestly feels like you're fine dining at home, and to me, that's just the best way to do it. (It's been more than a few months since I've been. Le French Diner in the Lower East Side is a tiny French restaurant serving delicious bistro classics in a kitchen seemingly too small to be churning out the quality of food they serve. For dinner we had two large glasses of a cabarnet franc, an incredible medium-rare hangar steak served with the creamy scalloped potatoes and a grilled steelhead trout with braised romaine. This is the type of place we wanted to keep to ourselves but sadly we are not in the business of gatekeeping. With only a few tables and 10 bar seats, it's better to arrive on the earlier side or be prepared to do a few laps around the block as they don't take reservations here. Wow wow wow. Cannot give enough praise of this place! I truly was not expecting to be blown away. I'm always hesitant about French spots in the US, but this place did not disappoint. A very small space with an equally small menu. Where they may seem like they lack in variety, they specialize each dish to a T. The menu size reminds me of mom and pop restaurants in France. Loved every dish we had, but the ones I truly adored were the beets salad and the quail. Absolutely amazing. Service was also on point. Note that this place is small and very popular. Very small restaurant we came and put our name done and they called us when the table was ready. The vibe were great but the bathroom and kitchen were a lil too close for my taste. We had orange wine, octopus, eggs, escargot and hangar steak. I enjoyed the orange wine. The eggs and escargot were tiny so not worth in my opinions.
