Wow. Cute hole in the wall place. The curry tofu bahn mi was so amazing and well priced. I want to go back to Oakland just for this place. We also got the lemongrass seitan bahn mi which was pretty good. The mango pineapple smoothie tasted like pure fresh mangos, the best ever

Street public parking Two lanes and people double park too so it gets busy and messy But beautiful building with a business inside that likes it clean, organized and friendly Got one of each, pork chicken and combo The bag feels like it's 10lbs haha Bread is so crispy crunchy omg The portions of meat look small in the pictures but it is full, but they also shoved 10,000 lbs of delicious veggies and I sincerely thank you for that

Loved my banh mi. Bread was crunchy but not dry. I got the grilled pork and it wasn't dry and flavored well. good portion as well. I also got a smoothie and it was nice and refreshing. They were super busy for lunch. they have so much on their menu! they have some tables for seating but not a whole lot. Since they were busy they forgot my friends juice so we had to wait a little longer.

Best banh mi place in downtown Oakland. $10 is absolutely worth the quality and size of this sandwich. Cold cuts are plentiful with generous smears of pate and savory mayo. This one banh mi fed both of us for lunch. Quick friendly service too. Note: they have a 3% credit card surcharge.

I wanted to try this place a couple of times before leaving a review. I lived in San Jose for a long time and had plenty of great Vietnamese food and banh mi, so I have a certain standard of how they should taste. After moving to the East Bay, my favorite spot became Banh Mi Ba Le. It is still my number one, even compared to places I liked back in San Jose. I first heard about Fresh and Best Cafe from a food reviewer on Instagram who hyped it up, so I decided to give it a try. I have to say, it was really good and definitely one of my top banh mi spots now, even though I still prefer Ba Le overall. The bread here is excellent. It has a slight crunch on the outside but is soft and fluffy on the inside. The size of the sandwiches is another big standout. At Ba Le, banh mi usually runs $6-$7. At Fresh and Best, they are around $10, but worth it. They are loaded with plenty of meat and vegetables, so you get your money's worth. On my first visit, I ordered the coconut pork. It is a unique choice since that dish is normally eaten with rice, not in a banh mi. It was good but not something I would get again. On my second visit, I tried the lemongrass seitan. I love Vietnamese vegan dishes, and sometimes I crave seitan, but this one was just okay. It was missing umami and needed more lemongrass flavor. For comparison, Mango and Mint in Alameda makes a much better version with way more flavor. The service here is great, but parking is a little sketchy. Both times I went, there was broken glass on the street from car break-ins. Ordering online is also a smart move because the line can get long. The second time I visited, it was out the door. Overall, I will definitely come back. Even though the first two sandwiches I tried were not ones I would normally order, the food here is fresh, the sandwiches are packed, and the value is solid. Next time I will stick to my usual BBQ pork banh mi, which is my go-to order.

Look no further for authentic Vietnamese banh mi and healthy juices/smoothies here in Downtown Oakland/west of the Lake. Stopped by to grab a late lunch and was craving some fresh banh mi. I saw Fresh and Best and their HUGE banh mi baguette size and large portions, so walked on over. They're a nondescript tiny store located next to tall apartment residences. So I feel so jealous of the people who live next door. They take card and have a fresh and healthy menu that serve veggie and meat lovers. Their breakfast menu was so enticing, but I wanted the banh mi, so went with the grilled chicken. I got one of their green smoothies and it was SUCH a nice blended texture. VERY filling. Banh mi has my heart, very generous with the carrots, cucumbers, cilantro, etc. Staff is so nice, run by a multi-generational group of Vietnamese ladies. Shoutout to our immigrants and women business owners! Support local, eat small biz, and power your immigrant workers. Shop is not super clean, but there's ample indoor seating, and they have wifi. Music overhead is kinda loud, Vietnamese music, but it's lovely. Will def be back.

    Grilled Chicken Vermicelli

Quality Vietnamese Food for a Great Price: This is one of the best vermicelli bowls Ive had. This vermicelli bowl is only second to what I had in the OC area, and for the price, is unbeatable. For $11.95 I am convinced I will not find a meal as filling and healthy. There plenty of grilled lemongrass chicken, a good balance of mint, lettuce and pickled daikon and carrot, and jalapeno along with amazing fish sauce (which had depth due to the chili in it). They fill up the container with food to the brim. I've also had the banhmi here and it was also good for an amazing price. They do not skimp out on the protein! The place seems to be owned by a Vietnamese family and the cashier is always super nice and pleasant. This will definitely be my new go to place for work lunches! It can have a long wait time during lunch rush, so I recommend ordering ahead of time online. There is some space outside and inside the restaurant as well!

Grilled pork banh mi with two eggs.

I've been going to Fresh and Best Cafe for some time now and honestly it's one of my favorite hidden gems in Oakland (idk why I'm sharing it, but they really are that good). Nestled away on Alice off of 14th, Fresh and Best is a small, humble spot. You walk in and you're immediately greeted with photos of a few of the items as well their extensive menu of smoothies, juices, and sandos. For this trip, I decided to go with their grilled pork banh mi with two added eggs (gotta get that protein). The pork was flavorful with just the right consistency. I really like the banh mi here because the bread is slightly soft instead of the immensely crunchy bread that you typically get at Vietnamese restaurants. All of the ingredients in my sandwich were super fresh and the portion was plentiful! I'd add that the Asian kale salad with chicken is another menu item that I love here. It's a great item if you're looking for so healthy. The staff here are friendly and prompt. I would suggest calling in your order if you're in a rush given that they can get a little busy at times. If you're looking for a good smoothie, sandwich, or healthy salad in downtown Oakland, this is the spot to come to!

My go-to lunch spot! I like to call and order ahead to pick it up and pay there. There's always groups of workers that walk over for their lunch break too. My favorite is the banh mi dac biet (combo)- super fresh and crunchy bread and the perfect pate to veggie to meat combo. This time I tried the grilled chicken and avocado wrap and it did not disappoint! Great ratio of filling again and so big that I ate it over 2 meals. Their juices are also freshly made and huge for me to put in the fridge and drink throughout the day over ice. Definitely check it out!

Vietnamese Iced Coffee and a Chocolate Chip Cookie
    Ámbar B.

First of all the smell leading up to the shop was amazing, everyone was friendly and the menu was clear and easy to read. I went in for my Vietnamese iced coffee and ordered a chocolate chip cookie. My order came out quickly, the coffee was delicious and the cookie was delicious. I will be coming back to work my way through the menu, they take Apple Pay!! Parking may be a little difficult but I recommend you stop by if you're in the area.

Never to young to try Banh Mi sandwiches!

I love eating Banh Mi sandwiches period! Shock to see prices through the roof though. Heard through the grape vine that the Banh Mi sandwiches purchased here were awfully large and heavy. Had to check it out coming from San Leandro, CA. Saw the photos of the establishment (past and present) and was caught off guard on how dingy and worn down the place looked. Ordered the cold cut selection #7 ($9.95) and was very impressed with the sandwich for sure. 1" 6 oz (felt like carrying a shot put in my hands!). Everything except for the carrots (marinated in too much sugar) was fantastic! Ordered a pork vermicelli ($12.95) and was equally satisfied w/it! The marinated fish sauce that came w/it had the usual M.O. (carrots had too much sugar). If they correct the balance of the sugar, it would be a near perfect Banh Mi for sure! Depending on how busy the place gets, the wait for your order to arrive can be awhile though. Will try their American meat sandwiches next time.

I pedaled my bike over there this Wednesday morning, aiming to secure a proper breakfast that would actually carry me past 11 a.m. The shop is cozy, definitely on the smaller side with a few seats inside, giving it that familiar, neighborhood spot feel. It's not a sprawling, antiseptic café, and I appreciate that. I ordered the Laney Breakfast Sandwich, which features egg, fresh spinach, sliced turkey, and Swiss cheese on a toasted English muffin. What impressed me was the intentionality--this wasn't something sitting under a heat lamp, looking defeated. It was clearly made to order. The egg was seasoned right, the turkey wasn't flimsy, and the spinach added that necessary fresh bite. It was a damn good sandwich, simple as that. I paired that with the Berry Lovers Smoothie. The original recipe calls for banana, but I asked if they could swap that out for mango. My people know that mango adds a different kind of sunshine, and they executed the substitution flawlessly. It came out thick, perfectly blended--a rich mix of blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and that mango kick. It was super refreshing and didn't taste like I was drinking melted ice. The service was quick and friendly, which is key on a weekday morning. Everything tasted clean, fresh, and intentionally prepared. If you're looking for high-quality breakfast fare that feels less commercial and more like something someone actually cares about, stop by. The short bike ride and the intimate seating are worth it for what comes out of that kitchen. They earned this review.

Later on, they sold dried fruits also. Eventually they sold hot foods like popcorn chicken, curry fish balls and different boba drinks. They have seatings as well. Their boba drinks had became so popular that they opened locations in Berkeley, San Francisco and Milpitas. I love their bobas, it's sweet, bouncy and great chewing texture. They used to have small tapioca options which I had loved, but it isn't an option anymore. All their drinks are pretty good so you can't be wrong what drinks you choose. I highly recommend their drinks and their popcorn chicken. I will definitely come back and try other drinks as well.

The milk tea quality honestly was ok. I am not sure why I tasted a hint of thai tea lol but I did not mind. The boba quality was great. Perfect texture and I love how chewy it is. Plus they gave a good boba proportion! The popcorn chicken was not spicy enough for me so I used the powder they had near the seating area. I think they try to not make it too spicy because a lot of families and kiddos order it so they probably don't want to make it very spicy. You can sit here too as you wait or as you eat. Staff are typical - not overly friendly but not cold. They are ready to work and hustle! Many childhood memories associated with this place. It has remained a place I will always come back to.

Our orders were taken and we sat down to wait. There were a TON OF FLIES buzzing around and I kept having to wave them off especially when we got our order to the table, which honestly was gross. We were called to pick up our order, but only 1 of the 4 items was ready: Zadie's Masterpiece Breakfast Sando - Really tasty and enjoyed the biscuit it was on. Skimpy on the bacon, there was ONE piece but overall good breakfast sandwich. Next item ready 5 minutes later: Khadija's Slow Burn Harissa Hot Honey Breakfast Burrito - Really tasty. Definitely flavor packed and would order this again. *BUT there was an issue. Apparently the person that ordered before us asked for the same burrito to go...they NEVER got it and yet our order was ready. The person was pretty cool about it but they were definitely annoyed and gave us a look although it wasn't our fault. *The ordering system seems unorganized with the cashier writing orders on a slip of receipt paper and putting them on a stand by the kitchen. I wonder if the slips were out of order or fell and they skipped this persons to go order? IDK but they need a better system! We tried waiting for our coffees before starting to eat but then our food started getting cold...YOU KNOW WHY?... because the poor person that was taking orders was also in charge of making drinks. Having one person as cashier and barrista is NOT a good idea on a busy Saturday morning. It was hard for them to take a moment and focus on the drinks becuase people kept coming in an placing orders which means we waited for 20+ minutes before getting our drinks. By then our food was mostly eaten! Thankfully we noticed they had a water pitcher for free water which was a saving grace! The wait for drinks was so long that people that were already sitting when we arrived and had already eaten their food were JUST getting their drinks before us. HORRIBLE! I felt really bad for the cashier/barista :( Another turn off, there is no understanding on what to do with dirty dishes. Do we bus our table? If so where do we put it? We noticed people leaving plates by the water pitcher and cups, some put them on the long counter by the coffee area. There wasn't a garbage or compost bin, so we weren't sure where to put food scraps. There was a bin for "Plastic Only" but only the cup lids were plastic and the cup itself was paper, so where TF do you put that? We noticed a black plastic bin that someone had brought out from the back, so we placed our stuff in there but wasn't exactly sure. We tried to ask the cashier/barista but they were slammed with customers so we ccouldn't get their attention. IDK the place is just poorly organized and messy! There are tables for people to make artwork which is nice but on a busy Saturday it might have been nice to clean those areas up to allow people to sit. Sorry guys... *You need a dedicated barista! People waiting 20+ minutes for drinks is insane especially when the food comes out relatively fast. *Please clean up your restaurant. The amount of flies was gross and no one wants to swat them away from food & drinks. *Tell people if they should bus their own tables and if so.... *Make it clear where to leave plates, cups, garbage, compost etc.
