Had a little bit of a wait outside, even though it was only an hour after opening on a Sunday afternoon; but were finally able to get a seat inside, near the entrance in the front (limited seats at the bar and the tables in the back). Cool concept with drinks- where you let the bartender or waiter know what type of alcohol you like, and they whip you something up. The spicy tequila cocktail they made me was delicious- and I loved the big ice cubes. Unfortunately it was about 15 min before anyone came over to greet us or take our order, and took over an HOUR to receive those drinks (3 drinks for 3 of us). Took another 30 min to receive our bill, and another 30 min to get our credit card back. We 100% would've ordered atleast one more round, if drinks hadn't taken over an hour to receive. read more

Quite a pretentious bar with rude service. Pros: Was here at opening time and got seated right away for a group of 5 on a Sunday evening. Ambience is very nice. This made me think it was similar to Attaboy in the city (no menu, you tell the bartender what flavors you like and they whip something up on the spot so essentially you never have the same drink twice and they do not make you your basic drinks like espresso martinis or bloody Mary's, but if that's something you like, they'll whip that up but still add their own twist to it). Where as this place, didn't have a physical menu or a QR code, but rather they still had a set list of drinks you had to order from. My friends literally ordered gin and tonics, red wine, and an espresso martini. What the point of not having a menu if you're going to serve the most basic drinks? Service: very rude. Our first bartender was a woman with brown hair and she was very sweet- she just listed off the menu for us and left. The second bartender though was quite rude. My friend had questions about the menu and asked if they had any drinks that "weren't sweet or had sugar" to which he responded "well alcohol has sugar" in a very rude manner. Obviously we know that. It's the same concept as Attaboy on the lower East which I hated when I went - I found that my drink there was boring and uninspired and $18 versus Fresh Kills where I got two of the best drinks of my life with wonderful service (shoutout to Taryn, literally the best waitress I've ever had before in my life). This spot was everything - fun, sexy, good music, great drinks. The bartender hit the nail on the head with every drink we ordered. Due to Covid, the bar is doing a "bartender's choice" where you tell them what your taste preferences are and they make it for you. I do not know the names of the drinks my table had (i.e. Does "mezcal with a hint of grapefruit ring any names for you?) but they were all divine. I'm no alcoholic (don't have the time) but I think pretty much daily about the cocktail I had at Fresh Kills. We went to Pokito afterward and the scene was great. Why didn't I just stay for the art that is cocktail making at Fresh Kills ahhhh! I said I like cocktails that are fruity and with gin. The sole cocktail I ordered, the potable love of my life, was called The Debutante. It was pomegranate, lime, gin, and something else. It was perfect. I can't even describe the balance but it was mouth-puckering, fresh, sweet, herbaceous. UGH. Shakespeare, Pushkin, Nupur L...we've all been inspired by a drink now. The bartenders looked at my partner and I like scum when we walked in. Whatever, we both work in service and get it. Sometimes you're just not in the mood. When we finished our drinks and wanted to pay, my partner got up and approached the bar to ask one of the bartenders, "what's the deal if we want to close out?". Honestly , I cannot even begin to explain how well they made the cocktails considering there is no menu. I basically described what I wanted and Rob and Bear made them exactly how I wanted them but even better. I was honestly in awe of how amazing they made each cocktail. There's literally no one else outside. We're the only people waiting to get in. Just tell us, can you seat us and or not? how long is the wait?" So, we went outside... to wait...in the rain...for this hostess to eventually come out to tell us how long the wait was...for this bar that had literally no one else in line. I mean, there was literally no one else waiting to get in. And the three of us just stood there in the rain. It all felt very silly and pretentious, like they wanted to create this "exclusive club" vibe but it doesn't work cause 1. it's not a club it's just a small cocktail bar in Williamsburg and 2. it's not exclusive because, and I can't stress this enough, there was literally no one else waiting to get in. Also, they had these little silver poles by the door that they usually hang a velvet rope on but the velvet rope was missing. C'mooon. Get your head outta the clouds. You're a bar, not The Bellagio. Anyway, the hostess never came to get us and eventually we just left and went to another bar. Super weird experience. My advice to management: Your customer experience starts with the host or hostess. It starts the moment your customer walks in the door. Smile, communicate, be kind and treat your customers with respect. I get that everywhere is short-staffed these days but management needs to step up and own the customer experience and train their employees. The review is not for the cocktails (drinks are always delicious) but for the people working at this bar/service. I had the "audacity" (according to the staff at this bar) to order another drink while I just got a drink (the wait time is long and my friends were on their last drinks). According to the server I was very disrespectful, he made it a point to school us on this. Apparently by ordering another drink in this instance was disrespectful to the bartender and the server thought he needed to let us know the same. Even after clarifying that wasn't our intention (to hurt the bartender, I know this sounds bizarre even writing this) he wasn't having it and insisted we were disrespectful. He 100% needs to be schooled on how to service people given he is in the service industry and was SO combative for no reason and this place can do better by not having a egomaniac working the bar. To the bartender, I loved the drink that my friend got and that's why I ordered another - this should have been a compliment and not an insult. Stop assuming peoples intent. If you're looking for cocktails this place is on point! The drinks are a little pricey, averaging around 15 but I think the prices are pretty reasonable compared to other NYC bars. The bar was rather full, so we decided to sit at one of the little tables at the front. Someone came to greet us shortly afterwards, she was helpful with telling me what drinks were her favorite. Both cocktails we ordered were one of the best I've ever had (Bourbon Gun Club and Prescription Julep). They both came with a metal straw, at first I almost thought it was a regular straw, it really keeps your drink cold when sipping through it and was a nice touch. Great cocktail bars in Brooklyn are far more spread out than those in Manhattan. It's nothing like the East Village where you've got Death & Co, Amor y Amargo and Cienfuegos within half a block of each other. You've got to search a bit more in Brooklyn. I'm pretty miserable at making decisions, though, so it's actually a huge help to have fewer options. I remember bookmarking Fresh Kills soon after its opening last year. Though I've never been to its sister bar, Dutch Kills, I've been scheming to get to LIC for ages just to visit the storied venue. If Fresh Kills is an accurate preview, I'm excited. The space is warm, intimate and overall lovely, and the drinks are varied, creative and fabulously executed. Great for a date and/or a small group of mixology nerds. Came here at around 6:45 on a Thursday night. They have some decent happy hour deals here until 7, so take advantage of that if you can. The happy hour drinks aren't as intriguing as the rest of the cocktail menu, but they're still well-made (and $11 instead of $15). The bf started with the Buck, which is essentially a mule made with your spirit of choice. Very refreshing, felt a bit like a Little Branch drink (which makes sense given the bar family). The space itself is on the small side. Elegant, dim lighting, beautiful architecture, lots of seating options. A fabulously-stockedSmall tables in the front, larger booths in the back and bar seating. We scored two seats at the bar, which is always my preference at a cocktail spot like this. I like watching the masters at work. There are lots of interesting goodies to choose from the menu. Drinks are split up by how they're served--long, constructed over a cube, stirred, shaken, etc. I always appreciate seeing the distinctions before ordering so I get a good idea of the relative balances of the drinks. I ended up starting with a shaken/stirred down, the Bourbon Gun Club (fresh lemon juice, passionfruit puree, honey, cinnamon, bourbon, egg white). It was complex, varied, light but still warming. Served with a metal straw (the Buck was as well--that's a signature here), which made it that much more enjoyable. The bf just about fell over when he tried and opted for one as his second drink. Highly recommend. I shifted towards spirit-forward for my next drink, another warming drink but something richer. I went with the Hat in Hand (sea salt, angostura bitters, banana liquor, cognac, dark rum, orange twist), which was a twist on an Old Fashioned. I was worried it might be too sweet but it was very well-balanced--the bitters paired tamed the banana liquor a bit. It's definitely a drink to sip slowly, my first being one that you can suck down pretty quickly if you're not paying attention. Some of the drinks at Fresh Kills are originals but others are an homage to hallmark creations from some of their OG mixologists--think folks from Milk & Honey and Dutch Kills. I always appreciate seeing these little references on cocktail menus. Both for the credit given and for the overall mixologist knowledge. I remember seeing the Up & Up do this as a sister of Amor y Amargo, and it was nice to see references there, too. Overall, we had a great time here. The bf ordered some chicken liver pate, which he enjoyed a lot, and we stayed about two hours. The bartender helping us was friendly and super helpful, making it the experience all the more pleasant. The cocktails and bartenders are fantastic but the experience and design of the place is so bad it should be criminal. Imagine arriving to the bar early for your date only to watch them arrive immediately corralled into a tiny spot by the door by a tacky velvet rope. It was freezing outside. I could see her shivering. People kept opening the door and trying to huddle into this tiny space trying to figure out what was going on. The host seemed to be doing double duty serving drinks and dealing with the door. Since they were busy serving drinks I had to simply sit, wave at my date and watch her awkwardly deal with the door situation for almost 10 minutes. Talk about a bad first impression! The decor is harsh and ugly. It's a bad mishmash of wood and metal. There isn't a single comfortable seat in the entire place. We kept changing spots to no avail. Think the polar opposite of cozy. It's so sad to see previous reviews about this place being unsafe for folks of color, and it's even sadder to have to add a similar review of my own after checking out this bar for the first time last evening. My friend arrived 10 minutes before me and was able to snag a table - I didn't have to wait. But when I arrived, there was a random velvet rope at the front of the bar and no one working to be found. I stood there for about 4 mins before deciding to just come in and join my friend at our table. The bartender came over about 5 mins after I sat, and immediately I knew her energy was off when she passive aggressively explained to me why "when you go to an establishment you should wait to be seated, like you would at any restaurant." She definitely thought she was being slick, even after I let her know that my friend already had the table and I was generally confused about what this place was and who worked there after waiting with no help when I first arrived. I'm still letting her know I'm confused but we place our drink order and decide to order another round. No one bothered to check on our table at any point after the rude bartender took our initial order. My friend catches the eye of the bartender and signals that we'll take a second round. Not rude, not demanding, just ready for another drink and saying you don't need to leave the bar to come talk to us. She rolls her eyes and then tells another coworker (he gave manager vibes) to come take our order. I asked if the bartender was okay because her vibes were not friendly, and I truly wasn't sure where that negativity was coming from and why it was pushed onto me. He smirks and goes "well I'm not going to fire her". I said "I never said anything about all of that" and he said "it was a joke, I'm sorry" and I said it wasn't a funny one and that we just wanted one more round and then we would be on our way to our next destination. It was clear he was trying to start an argument, which is something I don't have patience or energy for because I have a wonderful life. Something these people clearly don't have the luxury of experiencing themselves.... He takes our order but comes back two seconds later and asks if we're sure wanted drinks because if we felt uncomfortable by the bartender "she was still most likely going to make our drinks." Why would I be concerned about that unless she couldn't be trusted to not spit or poison our cocktails.... Before we got our second round, here comes the bartender ready to be combative and problematic she said that if she offended me, that wasn't her intention at all and that she didn't even know what happened to make me feel that way. I told her about how she was passive aggressive but if I misread her tone, that I accept that and all is well. She then asked about what was said from the manager guy, I told her, explained how his behavior and attitude was really random and uncalled for. She said that they've been dealing with a lot of people coming in not being vaccinated and that they're understaffed, COVID is making everything so hard.... As if I was born that morning and didn't have that concept in my orbit already. Not my problem. My favorite part was when she said "well honestly I think you're coming at me with anger and I can't speak to what the other guy said to you" and I said that she asked, and that she needs to be careful about what she says because her comments are offensive, micro aggressive, and gaslighting especially because I'm a black woman. Did this chick not exist in the year 2020...? Typical stuff - I never raised my voice at her, didn't call her out of her name, answered her questions knowing she was looking for a fight (shouldn't you be behind the bar making drinks if y'all are so understaffed) - and yet me, the customer, is the problem That was basically the end of it, when she brought our last round of drinks the weird manager dude immediately cashed us out but profusely apologized for the night because he knew he and his team were doing the most. I told him that he needs to step away and get customer sensitivity and unconscious bias training for the team. As my friend and I enjoy our last cocktails, we hear a literal ruckus happening in the front of the bar. And guess what, the weird manager dude was getting REAMED out by another table for trying to be cute with his tone and thinking that folks aren't gonna call him out. The argument got some loud and intense that they turned on all the lights, turned off all the music, and then the whole establishment was listening to this fight happening, confused about what was happening. That is quite literally what the fresh kills team gets. And guess what, that table had two patrons of color.... So again if you are a black or brown person, Fresh Kills is not the spot for you! Be prepared to feel uncomfortable, argue with the employees, be ignored, and gaslit because these folks have no intention of treating us equitably. read more

Plot: Avant-garde; the customer is always right. There is no menu, but instead, a bartender will curate a cocktail tailored to what you describe as you, in liquid form. Setting: A sexy, candle-lit lounge. Spacious, but with limited seating-- sectional tables for small groups of 2-3 up front and booths in the back for larger crowds. Although humble, this space is pretty high-profile, so anticipate a long wait unless you come prepared with a reservation. We came early on a Thursday night, at 6 PM (they open at 5 PM) and so we were able to secure a small table near the entrance. However, within the hour, a long line wished for our departure. Although a patron of alcohol, I am not well-versed, so when asked, I simply said that I am a sweet tooth, who likes fruity drinks, with margaritas as my usual go-to. I wish I could remember what my server described as my drink, but all I know is that it had pear and citrus and that it was one of the best 'margaritas' I've had. Needless to say, there was a 2nd round. My table partner asked for a twist on an Old Fashioned and that is precisely what he got. This bar is amazing. No set menus. The bartender makes every cocktail based off of your preferred spirit. Very few cocktail bars I've been to do this. But it makes it such a unique experience. Despite the cocktails being on the pricier side, the experience is worth it. You get custom made cocktails specifically crafted for you. What beats that! read more
